I just came to the realization that it's not actually the shittiness of agdg that is demotivating me and making me mad at all of you. The perspective of the suit man's gun seems a bit off. Right now it's a perfect side view rotated into his hands whereas you should be able to see the front/hole of the barrel, and the rear of the stock should appear to curve more inward. You don't need to redraw it completely, you could duplicate it and move it to the left 5-6 pixels, and then clean up and connect it together.

I'd add some more edge lighting to the characters to make them stand out more since the background is pure black. I know you're probably using MS Paint right now, but later this can be done easily in Paint.NET or any program with the magic wand tool by just selecting the background, moving the selection lower, and then using the global fill over the selected areas. Similarly, you could tweak the colors using curves, an overlay, or even putting a low opacity difference layer over everything to add some nice uniform color shifting. Right now all of the tones are really flat with no hues. I know in-game the graphics look like that, but if this is the main splash image I think it's worth it to give it a bit more flare where possible. Maybe this isn't what you're going for, but you could even maybe add separate color overlays for each character's corresponding outline color, it might help make the bright outlines seem more natural as well. For the background, I think you could try putting several 1 pixel thin lines of smoke going across it in layers that sort of fade away. A bit simple, but might add some appeal without being too distracting.

How to optimize a 3d game:
-Keep texture resolution around 1024x1024
-Keep polycount below 3,000 for props, 50k for characters
-Used baked lighting if possible. If you can't then disable shadows on basically every light and avoid having spots where 2+ shadows overlay each other.

This will get you 95% of the way there in any engine. Other optimizations are more engine specific.

Unreal has traversal stutter whether you're using async loading or not. It's apparently related to how the engine is threaded and how it spawns actors (only on the main thread) so it gets worse the more actors you have in a scene. You can mitigate the effects by having more loading zones with less actors in them. And no, world partition does not fix it.

IMO, if you're using Unreal you should just have loading screens where you do all the loading and unloading. Or at the very least have clear combat zones and clear traversal zones so at least your'e not stuttering when you're in the middle of a fight.

well i was able to figure out that it had something to do with the title card because when i deleted it, the lag spike would stop happening. it was very strange because every level has this and there's nothing different about them other than the text. if i were to replace it with anything else such empty gameobject it would still happen, which was very strange. again, this didn't occur in any other levels so i just copy and pasted the entire setup for the ui from a different level and that fixed it.

That's the logical assumption. Word of mouth is far more likely to start if you actually have something to offer to play. Why should someone get exited for the game if they can't try it, or tell their friends about it if it's not out?

That's not to say you shouldn't do prerelease marketing at all but it's not "over" after you hit release on Steam. It often takes indies a while to get off.

Because I have no idea how old you are but I am going to assume that most of us here were around for the 2000s. I started PC gaming in 95. Finland, where I'm from had a significant proto-indie scene in the 90s and early 00s. Most of those games were free though, or shareware.

I mostly remember demos from demo CDs and some of those were for PC but they were more common for PS1. I do remember stuff like Avernum having demos. In the 2000s there was a shift away from demos in the AAA space. When indies started to rise in the 2010s not a lot of them did demos. I don't remember when exactly Steam added demo support but changes like that and more recently the festivals has been a big push towards more devs doing demos.

I think you're failing to understand what I'm talking about because you cannot understand that PC games and console games are two completely separate mediums with separate audiences.

Steam does not represent the PC market because for a long long time Steam was a closed community of curated games.

The big indie game craze of the 2010s is also not really a PC phenomenon outside of the occasional freak accident like Factorio or Kenshi or Rimworld which only started coming more during the second half.

I am talking about things like Bigfishgames, and Arcade Town and the other similar websites which carried the entire 2000s indie scene on their back mostly through demos. Avernum was there. Most of the big RPGmaker games of the era which you do not know about were there. That was the PC market at the time. Slop like Bioshock and Assassin's Creed were console ports.

You audience is not the people who played Bioshock and Assasin's Creed in 2007 because today they play God of War and The Last of Us, and Baldur's Gate and they don't give two shits about our games.

You should start thinking of yourself as a PC developer, and you should start doing demos, and you should be targeting the people who were playing the Sims 2, and Syberia, and SimCity 4

Suicide seems like the only realistic escape from this never ending hell of wagecuckoldry that has barely even begun for me, I still have at least 30 more years of this. Thinking about that future feels like staring down into a dark abyss that seems to have no bottom. Just to be clear I'm not actually going to kill myself because I could never do that to my parents, so I'm 100% stuck here for at least as long as they're alive (which is looking like another 10-15 years at best).
I didn't used to be like this, I used to be happy and have dreams. All of this negative energy is a result of my job and the structure of misery it's built around my life. I need to get out of this prison but I have no idea where to begin.

I create a good debug scene where I can test the moves out and figure out the distance the cpu characters need to be when trying to use the move.

For now, I've gone back to the main menu to improve the look and feel and to try some designs out.

Consider that it did that in a couple days. Sure the biggest spike is probably done but the tail should be decent. Add like a 20% sale paired with some big update in ~6 months and it could see a nice spike. It has reached the sort of review count that interested people who stumble upon the page won't dismiss it because of low reviews.
