Their canon dynamic is that she acts like "big sister" and is calm around him, but functionally she's a spirit guide rather than an actual person. It was really jarring in IDW when Sonic said they were emotionally supportive of each other, yet that scene was the only time he tried to have a real conversation with her as a person.
