I think a lot of the bugs are dealt with for now. I think the most questionable bug was the game started calling one function after every action even though it is only suppose to work with certain actions, I think it's fine, but I had to add a is valid check and it removed the errors. There is one major bug left and that is code is paused if error tolerance isn't close enough, so I have to optimize that

I can see this happening. I'm seeing some high quality games of a specific type get 50-250 reviews while one that appeared maybe 2 years ago has 2k+ reviews. The newest one I saw is much higher quality and yet around 100 reviews. Now if only I could convince them to team up with me, the skills transfer immensely to a completely different genre. how do engines do sound stuff? SDL mixer seems to have no way of panning specific sounds left or right so i guess if i wanted sounds to the left of the player to play in the left ear i'd have to find out which of the 16 channels (which i still dont get wtf a channel is) the sound is playing in and then set that channel to pan to the left based on that sound and then unset the channel to pan to the left when the sound is done (which it doesn't tell me when a sound is playing or not) and if i want to pause audio when the game pauses i have to pause every channel but then i can't play menu sounds so i have to keep 1 or 2 channels not paused and somehow not allow any other sounds to play in these channels and like wtf even am i doing at that point

are sounds this complicated in an engine? is it just playsound();

yeah there is a simple road mesh that follows a spline, it flattens the terrain around it so that its always showing nicely on top. the mesh has an opacity map that makes the sides look like they are blending into the ground

Wtf are you talking about? There are games like Fallout, Etrian Odyssey, or any WoW-clone MMO. Basically, any open-ish world game with non-scaling enemies. They make it very clear that you're not supposed to be able to beat those enemies because you do no damage to them and they insta-kill you. Meanwhile, a game like Dark Souls show you really hard enemies, but your attacks do non-trivial damage to them, and there are ways you can avoid all damage from them, and so those enemies are presented as beatable, so long as you have the skills.

So I have a delta time issue.
This code is effectively simulating an object that bounces off the floor.
When it hits the bottom of the screen I set the dy value to a negative value so that it *bounces*.
Trouble is that when I lower the frame rate the bounce goes much higher.
THis doesnt' make sense to me as I figure lower framerate means bigger dt so if anything the character should have a smalller bounce.
Am I doing something wrong with my math?

Have you considered maybe you're the ones with fried dopamine receptors? Skinner boxes are fun to anyone who isn't completely fried, which is why they sell so well. 3 or 4 choices is a good sweet spot for making a decision small enough to not feel overwhelming, the entire power structure of a playthrough revolving around these small incremental decisions make them feel impactful, and the large pool of available choices to randomly poll from makes the decision feel fresh each time it needs to be made.

I use it too. Not only does it speedup development, but it also allows me to follow my vision and I don't have to hassle with the artists. There's also the upside of not waiting for art and no chance the artist ghosts you.

Totally ambivalent.
The only negative effect is if you're making a small horror game or something a youtuber like Alpha Beta Gamer or Manly Badass Hero would play and your game gets filtered in their searches.
It's also going to make it a lot easier for game jams to filter any games with AI content, which was probably why this feature was implemented if I had to guess.
IDK if it's really enforceable though. Anyone smart enough will just do a tiny bit of editing to hid it, but it's probably to filter the 80% of AI heads that won't.

I'm not really pro or anti AI at this point.

Sadly my game has been in development for far too long to simply abandon it now. I must finish it. Anyways my skills improved over time as I developed this game, if I dropped it, say 2.5 years in, whatever game I worked on next would probably look bad as well. Though had I done that I'd probably have finally made my first commercial release since around that time I was considering project hopping to making a Vampire Survivors clone. At some point someone with around the same level of skill, in terms of drawing, made one. Don't remember the name, but found one with around 300 reviews and released in 2023. Not sure if it was this one but that's a nice payday, though there may have been a different one that got around 1000 reviews around my art skill level but I can't remember too well. Regardless it'd have been a nice cash boost.
