I find them super useful. Seeing people play live is amazing. Its great for understanding the psychology of players. I also work on the game live. If a player finds a bug, I'll fix it right there on the spot when they're done. Then the next person who plays is basically testing the fix. Dont expect that many wishlists or anything though.

torches are supposed to stick a certain way in the wall after they collide... but they don't

source of bug:
in the object's movement code, object places itself against the wall, then sets itself to asleep so no more physics calculations run
but actually networked movement code doesn't set position directly, but with a struct. and that struct isn't applied to the object's position/rotation because it is now asleep

look up what are chords and just spend a month composing combinations of close chords in the circle of fifths.

You learn making music by just composing a lot of minisongs of 16-32 bars.
Then you simply join multiple bars of them.

Also look up what is percusion, what is a lead, what is a pluck, what is a pad, what is an ambient sound, what is SFX.

That should be enough to make basic music.

just download Substance painter, then simply learn the following rule.

You only need to learn how to make masks to apply the textures.

Learn shit like curvature maps, AO maps, the one that find hard edges, thickness maps and the Z axis or a normal map.
Then learn to use then as masks of the PBR textures.

I've actually done that with 2d art, someone posted a cool image and I just made the character move across the screen, which then led to the other person doing another whole image and I reused the same code as before and joined the two together, it ended up decently sized for something whose only team communication were sporadic 4chan posts

Just learn to use your ears.

Do a bunch of compositions where you use only certain chords of the circle of fifths and take notes about how they make you feel.

Another cool exercise is to compose a few songs on every greek mode and some scales like chinese scales, blues scales and arabic scales, and then notice how each one produces a particular feeling.

Also do a bunch of compositions where you limit yourself to only using a single iterval between notes, and put attention to how each interval sounds.

Music is less about theory and more about training your ear to perceive things.

Also, download some MIDI of your favorite songs and just copy them a lot.

Another excelent exercise that taugh me a lot, is to lay some chords, and then having 4 voices, then one voice is just a whole note, the second one is only half notes, then another one is 4rth notes and the last one is 8th tempo notes.

Music is not that hard, but requires simply doing a lot of compositions.

A good book to learn composition is Fux gradus at parnassum.

-Removed camera up/down movement entirely. Both hardcore gamers and new casual players didnt move and pan the camera up/down correctly but did turn the camera left/right correctly. To make the game better I had to make a huge change where the camera is always fixed at the correct up/down angel and the player doesnt have control over it at all.

Yes im serious. 1000 playtesters and only maybe 20 moved the camera up and down correctly makes it so the game would fail if I didn't make this change because humanity is retarded.


-Increased default camera zoom in to even MORE zoomed in. People in agdg have wanted this for years; where the default camera zoom is very zoomed in close to boku but the ability to zoom out on input is still there and useable at any time if you need it.

I have a workflow question.
In my 3D action game, I would like to have the characters' attacks (sword swings, etc.) to have some VFX to follow the path of the strike. I don't need, nor do I particularly want it to be procedural. If I can, I'd like to bake it into the animation in Blender, and have that just werk in Godot.
As far as I'm able to find with my google-fu, *nobody* does this. All tutorials are either for procedural weapon trails, or are not meant for games, and thus use methods within Blender that won't transfer over to the engine.
How does this kind of thing normally get done?

Vfx are usually just meshes and/or particle effects with shaders, the meshes and shader params can be animated in godot and tailored to fit a specific animation and played at the same time as the character mesh. Generally it's probably more efficient to make a bunch of general purpose effects and slap them on top of an animation rather than making bespoke vfx for each animation.

draw the particule animation into a sprite sheet then simply animate the UV inside of blender using a shader UV node.

Or simply make an animated sprite be spawned in the engine that tracks and follow the position of the bone.

You can do that using your animator tool inside godot with a basic animated sprite as weapon trail.

A good technique for that is to use a gradient texture, then simply use an animated mask to move around it, giving the illusion of VFX or magic.

Some good books I read were introduction to tonal harmony, figuring out melody, forgot the name but It was a book that explained how classical forms like sonata worked.

Learning the classical forms, basically is like when you learn to draw a manequin when you're learning to draw people.

Also learn to tell apart 3/4 from 2/4 from 4/4 rythms.

They're right that substance painter is a great program with good value, but if you want something free to get started with you can always paint textures with good old Blender.
There's also ArmorPaint, which you can compile yourself for free or pay $19 for a precompiled binary. I haven't messed with it much but I've heard good things.
Allah forgive me for mentioning this one, but Blockbench is really convenient if you only want to paint specifically pixel art textures. It's made for that purpose and totally free.

Feels that way with mine but the closer it gets to being done the more empty it feels. Like I've accomplished very little all these years even though the amount of hours poured in is likely over a thousand. And I'm embarrassed at time's for it too has been in development for far too long.

I'm starting a little side-project for a break from my main project. The goal is to complete a game in 2 months. Basically, demo ready for next DD, then submit to NextFest, then put it up on Steam in January / February.

Started implementation on it yesterday after spending a week writing a rough game design document. Plan is, keep it simple and don't overcomplicate systems. Also, use as many of my complete systems from my main project to save time.

Only thing I've never done before is isometric 2d tile generator with procedural generation. If anyone has a good tutorial or video, a link would be appreciated.

yeah, exactly what i did.
Though it turned out pretty bad the first time, i tried unwrapping uvs properly so i could get a better result on the next try. Then i figured uvs were still incorectly unwrapped so i decided to just draw over the model in the viewport instead (as opposed to the texture paint editor). It still turned out pretty inconsistent in the end, but i'm sure noone will bother looking into the details on a 256x256 texture.

Imagine a generic first person shooter.
But, the only way to kill an opponent is to shoot him in the head after downing him. Terrain and weapon precision is tuned to make this last shot difficult without getting closer to the enemy (or maybe outright requires a melee hit).
If you're downed, you can rise again by completing some trivial game like sokoban / pong / whatever to confirm that you are not brain-dead. You get back into action as fast as your skills allow.

Tell me the obvious flaws / why it wouldn't be fun at all.

I had a weird revelation about a game mechanic while sleeping. Instead of attempting to do a a much more complex game mechanic to code so there are resources that build up, I can do something simpler that has more tension and reasoning with finite resources that are in decline.
