I disagree that Rebirth has a bad open world. Traversing the world is quick, the regions are all different, the checklists are short and ones such as the proto-relic quests, monster fights (Fuck you I like MAI and the monster lore) summon shrines and life springs are quick and give lore to the world. Granted there's no exploration really, the caches are pointless baring certain ones that give equipment, the rabbits are also pointless (why tie Johnny hotel stuff to the rabbits). Compared to XVI and XV however, I enjoyed running around on Chocoback. Taming Chocobos got old though, fuck the Nibelheim cacti. As a general fan of Remake and Rebirth, it's frustrating how inconsistent the characterization feels.Cloud feels like himself except for when his "true self" comes out, which doesn't really happen in the original at all. Or at least it's subtle enough it's ambiguous, unlike in Remake where there's a huge neon Cloud is being his genuine self even though he has no idea his persona is false anyway.Tifa feels like herself, but they toned down her anger at Shinra to soften her, and played up her desire to spare collaborators she deems relatively innocent. I think she expresses this kind of sentiment in the original as well, but they really ram it home in Remake especially. The English translation tones down her language in her flashback announcing her hatred of Shinra, which is weak.Aerith gains and then loses clairvoyance. For what purpose? It changes her significantly in Remake.Nanaki gets some of that, too.Cid feels like a different character, since his first impression and entire motivation is vastly different.When the characters act like themselves it's great, but there's plenty of time where they just don't.Not to mention, the Cloud and Tifa stuff in Gongaga and on her date basically ruin the reveal of the original Lifestream scene that Cloud has been simping for her since they were kids. It's just like Hojo remembering Cloud in Remake and beginning to announce he was never a soldier before the whispers drag him off. Why spoil shit like that for newbies? I think the fact that a character like Red XIII even exists at all is a testament to how fun and enjoyable FFVII/FFVIIR really is as a product and a part of why it is able to connect to so many people. My nephew's were so hyped when they first saw him in Remake, and they always wanted him to be in the party in the Grasslands whenever they played Rebirth (and died to the Midgardsormr)There's nothing like him in Final Fantasy before and there's been nothing like him since. The fact that they have fleshed him out personality wise and have made him so much more well realized overall as a party member is just more evidence to show how creatively INSPIRED Creative Studio 1 is. This "forgettable", "throwaway" character is absolute kino incarnate.
