Heathcliff gets tired of riding that horse, and wants to switch, and asks Hindley to swap, Hindley obviously takes issue with it since he picked first and took the cooler one at a glance, then Heathcliff basically makes it a point to threaten him with telling on the dad that he's been beating on him, and his father would REALLY not like that (which isn't incorrect), Hindley gets fucking mad and throws the iron made to work the horse saddles hitting him on the chest, and basically calls him a freaking devil, taking the wind out of Heathcliff, and fucks off. Heathcliff gets back up pretty much unfazed after getting back up, almost uncaring, and just saddles his new horse to ride on it.I think you can easily infer from the scene where he says their dad loves him more than his own son makes that fairly clear already. Heathcliff wasn't just some poor dude who was abused without fighting back, he bit back and made Hindley spiral even worse by taking advantage of the fact he was a hot head, and could have the dad fuck him over later, or played his obvious wish for attention against him. Which ultimately just made things worse once the dad died prematurely.
