As for me idk what even screws me over but somehow hours have frequently passed by without progress as a neet. It's only recently I discovered one of the issues.
>My sleep schedule
My day unironically feels shorter because of it. I need to fix it so I can at least get rid of one of the problems. I still need to figure out why I have such a hard time making progress even after switching over to a GMI game. I expected far more progress due to working on a GMI game yet it doesn't really feel like much when it comes down to the actual work done that makes the game. However in the end I've gotten better, frequent progress.

>$30
should be 10 at most

~60k wishlists with ~2k copies sold means the game is just too expensive, ~3.5% wishlist conversion
for comparison, flyknight has ~300k wishlists and ~200k copies sold, ~66% wishlist conversion
see the difference?
pricing killed this game
it's sad, because the game genuinely looks good
i think the reason people aren't willing to spend $30 on it is because it looks too short
an indie game like factorio might be worth $30 because it has hundreds, maybe even thousands of hours of content
this game looks to be 10 hours at most

i think the most efficient way to market your game is to make a high quality trailer with an effective call to action and just pay money to promote it
even sending emails requires more effort for the same click count
you can just do a $20 steam gift card giveaway on twitter, attach your trailer to it, and enjoy the clickthrough volume
i think the only way this would fail is if your game has an excessively niche hook, in which case, your trailer would still be important, you'd just need to put more effort into finding compatible communities to expose it to

Idk I like using low poly it's a great art style i think but I feel like people use it for ps1,ps2 type of games I personally like the ps3 graphics idk if you can call it low poly tho

also yeah blender is ez it's just mainly about workflow and how fast you can make quality models. To me at least
>>
Is Godot good for mobile games, or is it a meme? Brotato (one of the most successful Godot games) had its mobile port done in Unity.
>>
>>521690004
Once you learn blender you can make decent models extremely fast. The only thing that takes time is sculpting and retopoing a person basically.
>>
>>521690009
godot probably has terrible power efficiency, which is why mobile ports are in unity, because it's atleast had some professional effort into improvements.

>>521690009
Unity is the best for mobile because it comes with interfaces to all of the monetization APIs, whereas Godot doesn't. Godot just compiles and runs on Android/iOS, so it'll be fine for a premium game, but not for IAP.

you can go pretty far with primitives + shaders. make sure to UV them correctly (no long faces, triangulate all or most faces, etc), smooth the normals (I use shade auto-smooth since it lets me pick the threshold for what is and is not smoothed), and then map them well.

You may think UV mapping doesn't matter for primitives, especially if they are going to be single color, but it'll make a big difference in how the shadows are rendered, and will make your life a lot easier if you decide to make shaders.

can someone explain why you are supposed to get a bunch of wishlists before releasing your game? it just sounds odd to me, like you are supposed to market your game before people can even buy it

People are a lot more likely to buy when it's the new hot thing and just released. Also having time where they know it exists but can't play it gives them time to build it up in their head to something better than it probably is, and there's no reviews telling them if it sucks yet.

It's for the same reason AAA games have a huge marketing push leading up to release.
>>
>>521712623
the whole wishlists thing is just dbz powerlevels bullshit but for gamedev. it's important but completely blown out of proportion.

yeah, it'll help in the sense that you're more likely to get featured on the steam front page, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be successful.
I have dozens of games on my wishlist, but I haven't bought any of them. Most games I buy on steam are things I hear about 30 min before buying.

If I'm being completely honest, the games that go on my wishlist are the games that seem interesting, but I'll only play them if I pirate them or can get them for less than a dollar.
If anything, going on my wishlist just means that dev will never see a penny from me.
>>
>>521712767
consider releasing it without wishlists. what happens? what does the steam algorithm do to your game? the answers reveal that wishlists before release is better for it.
>>

That way is easy, where all the code is on the server, and all the client does is send packets to the server asking for things to be done, and receive packets from the server to display the state of the server.

I mean that the path towards success seems to be shock value or having the right hooks rather than just quality. It feels like there’s an attention economy rat race where only “brainrot” content can thrive, and if you’re looking to make money as an indie dev you’re better off making 30 low effort variations on “Mr Krabs does Ketamine” than one really good game. Schedule 1, from what I hear, was developed over several years and had a lot of effort put into it. That’s great and I’m happy for its creator. There’s very many talented devs who put as much or more effort, love, and skill into their games, and the reason that Schedule 1 succeeded in such a large scale where others don’t seems to have very little to do with the quality of the game and its execution and very much to do with its vulgarly memorable hook.

I wish mainstream audiences had better taste.

It’s not just vulgarity, but is usually outlandish. I think the best way to describe it is to just call it “brainrot,” which is also seemingly what you need to succeed as a content creator on YouTube, TikTok, or Twitch. The first other example that comes to mind (because I watched this video and it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth) is Choo Choo Charles. There’s lots of other examples though. Even the indie games that have a lot put into them still seem to have to market themselves with outlandish hooks, e.g. Palworld’s marketing being basically “it’s pokemon with guns!” or Another Crab’s Treasure (Dark Souls but you’re a crab maybe is already a kind of “brainrot” premise, but I give them a pass because the mechanic of having to scavenge ocean trash for shells seems cool and justifies the premise to me) giving their crab a gun. I think there was also some “Squirrel with a gun” game that ended up being fairly successful.

Not that any of this is unique to videogames as it seems like the same sort of thing is going on with indie artists/creators of any kind.

Serious question. How long have you been doing gamedev for? How long after the day you decide to take up gamedev as a hobby can someone reasonably expect to publish a game that gets 30 reviews?

Do you think that people are going to see schedule 1 and they're going to be releasing their first game in the next 1-2 years? I don't. Gamedev isn't a hobby for tourists, this shit either grips you from a young age and you've always just done it, or you're ngmi. This is why there's so many youtubers making beginner tutorials, and not so much for intermediate or advanced problems.

The torrent of asset flips and retarded baby projects that flood onto steam are not your competition.

Wrong. Plenty of people switch from programming jobs, artist jobs, or any general jobs with the money to gamedev when they're 30 or something.
I mean I don't blame you for not watching the brainrot youtube videos, but 99% of them are like that. They've been playing games their entire lives, had normal jobs, normal lives, then they saw a huge hit like Hollow Knight and decided they can do their own.

>parse player position to npc
>let them approach player but jiggle around him in a set radius (some nav agent settings can be tuned for that)
>at random time intervals, let them lunge toward player for attack
>let them return to their encircle stance
For flanking stuff let them calculate a non direct way towards player, perhaps with random waypoints they must reach that are not on the most obvious, direct path.
The exact implementation depends on the language and engine you use. But before you start, make a plan what exactly you want them to do.

>comp sci degree
people with cs degrees can, in some cases, not solve even the most basic programming problems, and then they will cope about this by telling you that cs is a theoretical degree about computers, not a programming degree. This is why in order to get a job as a developer we have to go through the humiliation ritual that is a technical test or coding interview. The degree isn't enough to ensure that someone knows what a for loop is. Turns out you actually have to be a hobbyist to be a competent programmer.

Also where's your art and music degrees? Gamedev is a multi-disciplinary endeavour, it exists at the intersection between many different skills, all of which you need to have been practicing for multiple years in order to make a game at the ever raising minimum bar for quality expected by today's gaming audience.

>>521734160
Same goes for you, programming wagies and artist wagies suddenly turning to gamedev have a severe skills gap that they can only fill by somehow forming a team. Even gaming industry veterans from Riot and Blizzard who have a midlife crisis and decide to stop being a cog in the AAA machine and go it alone decide that what the world really needs a well-drawn but otherwise shitty metroidvania (pic related) that gets sub 1000 reviews.

This shit isn't easy, it isn't for tourists, and you're far more likely to 'make it' by picking literally any other method to make money. If you're 30 and you have no direction in life honestly just start a power washing business.
>>
>>521737256

The Steam algorithm doesn't care if 10k is a large number for you. It's not a large number for them, so they won't promote it, and you'll end up with <100 sales.

it'd be sitting at a generous 50 reviews at max

no, the big youtubers won't even consider touching your passion project
maybe some small channels can make a couple 10 view videos about it
and a reddit post will get 30 upvotes
that's it
months of marketing will peak at a couple thousand youtube views and a couple upvoted reddit threads because the only reliable vectors for exposure refused to touch your non-slop game
it doesn't matter how much you like it
no youtube slop = no exposure
you can spend 20k on paid advertisements and hope it works out

This is interesting. Feed chatgpt my splash image, asked it to recreate it in the style of Gendy Tartakovsky, it could not, it was against content policy,
Asked it to create it in the style of Samurai Jack.
Same answer.

You can take 10 people with a comp sci degree and they won't be the same, but usually your basic programming knowledge is tested in the first year a lot of people that I knew were shit at coding failed or dropped out in the first or second year. If your game is great, it will sell.
There has never been a truly great game that didn't sell.
If your release "flops", it was most likely mediocre, or at best, good (to some).
Please stop worrying about strategies concerning release, great games sell.
Notice how no one can ever unearth a hidden Hollow Knight from dumpster diving on Steam? How at best you can "unearth" some 7/10? That's because great games sell, no matter what. Yes, even if stealth dropped and instantly hidden by other releases. There has never been a case where some autist like me went down into the steam mines and unearthed a 8+/10 game no one ever heard about before.
I cannot stress this fact enough.
Please focus on making a great game.

The more of this "how to market your game" blogs/videos I read and watch, the more I think they're completely useless and I'm better off isolating myself from the internet finishing my game and just dropping it on Steam, maybe buy an ad on 4chan or something.

You leave tutorial hell as soon as you grasp all essentials to your engine and language. As soon as you know how things work, your mind comes off with the solution naturally. For a bicycle you'd need first to decide what approach you need. Scripted, physics-based or whatever else. Then you pick the fitting node or whatever it's called and expand from there. It all comes down to the base fact that all you see in games is nothing else than simple shapes moving around doing whatever you want with some fancy models plastered on top of em. Know how the basics work and you can make anything.

According to this employee, there are 3 tiers of player accounts and a wishlists from each of them have different weights:

The lowest is an account with 0 purchases, and 0 play time (most likely a bot account)
Middle tier is an account that looks like a real person but one that isn’t that engaged with Steam (I forgot all the factors the Valve person said but I think it was something like, they haven’t spent a lot of money, haven’t played many different games, aren’t doing much wishlisting)
The top tier wishlist is from an account that spends a lot of money, logs in frequently, wishlists a lot of games.

Look at how games are designed and how to the basics function. Tutorials can help during this phase, but are only the introduction most of the time.
An example: Many characters you see in vidya have a primitive shape collider (most often a tick tack shaped capsule) that is responsible for collision and smooth movement. Why a ticktack? Because box-shaped colliders tend to get stuck in edges etc. Movement is done via script which processes the player's input. Tutorials can help here teaching you the basics of movement. This collider is invisible and in its centre is the actual playermodel, which, depending on the action the player inputs, plays an animation, like run etc. Attacks and interactions can be done in different ways, but in fps games many are done with hitscan or raycast techniques. Those are invisible lines drawn from one position to another and trigger events on the target when a certain action is performed, like firing a shot or something. One could continue endlessly here, explaining all the techniques you could use, but for your own project, see what things exactly you need research how others have done it. When you have those basics down, you should be able to dev on your own most of the time. But at the end of the day, you mostly command geometric shapes to do your bidding and display the result to the player.
