Gameplay first, because its a game. If the gameplay loop isn't fun and the mechanics aren't interesting then why shouldn't I just read a book or watch a show instead. Story and atmosphere are tied up for me, story doesn't have to be perfect if the atmosphere is right.

>gameplay loop
This term belongs in arpgs and assorted skinner boxes, not rpgs. If you start talking about "gameplay loops" like a rat in a cage, you're not immersing yourself in the rpg.

>waste a Rogue talent for the chance to use 1 (uno) cantrip (but worse in every way)
This was modded in just for the sake of completeness with Tabletop where being able to throw even a bit of magic around can be useful, r-right?
Because I cannot think of a single use case for this, I just can't
>>
>>537204517
Disrupt Undead is quite strong for low levels, so if you're doing like only the first part of the side campaign DLC maybe it could be justified.
In tabletop it's really strong obviously because non-combat utility is very fucking good.

>>

>>
Fallout is my favourite rtwp game
>>
>>537224002
NTA, but the thing is you're still better off just making the roll.
The reality is CRPGs have the perfect solution presented already: simply don't tell the player there was a roll. Similar in practice to pre-rolled perceptions or passive perception on tabletop, the most effective way to reduce metagaming is to simply obfuscate what's happening from the player(s). If the dialogue options are rolled before showing up, you don't see the grayed out "[Charisma] Join me!" or the "[Failed] I'd never join scum like you!"
You just try it and get a result with no idea there even was chance involved, or aren't even presented the option in the first place.

Sister Argenta is also very powerful if you build up her burst damage, particularly as an Arch Militant

xp leveling makes no fucking sense when you think about it
characters don't level up after defeating an arbitrary amount of goblins and trash encounters
they level up when it makes narrative sense, like defeating a boss or completing a dungeon

Its much more mixed up with narrative and immersive than an ARPG, but there's still a similar thing going on. You're killing monsters, finishing quests, exploring dungeons for loot so that you can kill more monsters, access more quests, explore harder dungeons. Nothing wrong with that and ultimately it breaks the loop by having a story that actually (hopefully) goes somewhere and gives a sense of conclusion unlike those online Skinner boxes.
>>
>>537225796
Gets me every time, its why in WOTR I can never be evil and no matter what party composition I have it must include Ember (which is frustrating because she's so perfectly autistically built for one single thing, ray caster). Someone has to care for her.

Old school arpgs like Diablo 2 used to be fun but modern ones like PoE are just straight up cancer, literally everything is constructed and maintained to keep you engaged and coming back to it (seasons, challenges, constant meta shifts that ruin your builds just to keep it all "fresh" and make sure streamers have content, etc). Actually a good modern one would be Grim Dawn, because its single player so it doesn't really have all that engagement farming and FOMO bullshit. More of a story and point to exploring the world in that one too.

I still think I'm missing something in my quest to latch onto Baldur's Gate (and by extension, the wider world of party based isometric CRPGs)

I'm at the end of Nashkel Mines, and can't figure out how to beat Mulahey.
My party comp is: Lv 2 Mage PC, Lv 3 Imoen, Lv 2 Jaheira, Lv 2 Khalid, Lv 1 Montaron, and Lv 2 Xan who I just picked up.

The adds that spawn after engaging him just swarm all around, pick off the weak ones, and barely give me a chance to reposition or cast spells.

I tried doing as many quests as I could to get power, but pretty quickly I ran out of ones that I have any decent direction to find, but I can already tell it's probably not enough.

You've never seen such joy on her face. “I... I just want to live here, in the mortal world. With you. I've solved the goddess's riddle. This is my true dream!”

>Arueshalae’s fragile body flares with a rainbow light, a swarm of blue butterflies surrounds her. She looks at you with shining eyes. “I love you. Will you be with me? Will you share my dream?”

>The girl flinches, but doesn’t pull her hand away. She squeezes your hand with her dry, hot fingers. “I believe you. You must be real — I don’t want to imagine a world where you’re not.”

>As if she was just waiting for that, Arueshalae answers your smile with one of her own. “Together, no hardship will scare us. We’ll get through it! We definitely will!”

>The heat radiating from Arueshalae’s body warms you and fills you with peace. Closing her eyes, she leans closer into you, her face moving toward yours...

I picked up my Solasta playthrough I started earlier this year, and the verticality is amazing, the way you can interact with the environment, everything just works really well. This could easily be my #1 top combatfag RPG of all time...

...if it didn't use 5E.

A few days ago, I replayed Knights of the Chalice to get all its Steam achievements. I had a blast. It's a far simpler engine, the battle maps are just 2D planes with no environmental interaction, but the D&D 3.5 system is just so much fun to play with in a combatfag game like this. Pierre's homebrew rule changes like giving all casters full access to their entire spell library instead of making you memorize a handful beforehand also adds to the fun of the combat, since your casters are so incredibly versatile - and the same applies to enemies, who will blow half a dozen spells at you every turn.

After finishing KotC1, I picked up my ironman attempt at KotC2 again, and it's even more fun. The only thing it lacks compared to Solasta is full 3D environments, but other than that, it has everything: height levels, hazards like pits you can fall (or be pushed!) into, bodies of liquid like water or lava you can get submerged in (which affects your movement and attacks). And simply because of the system used - homebrew D&D 3.5 - I vastly, vastly prefer it to Solasta. In fact it just makes me wish Solasta used 3.5 instead.

Having two theives can be nice in bg. Your points are pretty limited in bg 1 so you can have one focus on sneaking to backstab guys and the other can do al the traps and locks. Not gonna say its optimal but its a solid option.
In bg2 you eventually get enough levels that one thief can do everything.
Also Montaron is just a straight up solid combat character.
>>537245569
Thats the fight with all the skeletons right? Pretty sure you can sleep mulahey (command works at least) and focus fire him. Then once he's down have your tankiest character stand in the hall blocking the skeletons while the rest of your party chips away at them from range.
Ranged in general is op in bg1, everyone should have a bow, sling etc in their second weapon slot.

>Do you actually get new colonies from this?
lmao
>>
>>537259258
No new colonies. The only reward of significance is rep. In that case shrine is better.
As you go along, some projects give tons of rep and those are quite useful
>>
>>537259432
two of them can give you new escort ships, couple of them can give good items
>>
>>537259432
Some of them give you significantly different rewards eg recurring medkits, or the Dargonus escort ship which is always replaced. It's worth planning out a bit.
Then of course a whole new set of projects unlocks in act 4
>>
>>537259857
>>537259964
I should've been more specific. The rewards are different, but the major colony events are still the same, like the prison planet Vheabos VI is always gonna have the xeno and cult of dawn event, same with Dargonus having a genestealer uprising and that Deldar administrator event

>bg2 you eventually get enough levels that one thief can do everything.
Multiple thieves is still really nice in BG2, especially if they're pure thieves with kits. Level 11 thieves get three traps/day, so that's nine traps with a bounty hunter and one other thief. You also get the additional hit & fade backstab shenanigans, which is fun. Plus with multiple thieves you get detect illusions and pickpocket early, which is really handy. You hardly need a thief at all. If you don't want one, you'll be fine as it is simply a matter of convenience if you aren't using the other thief skills.

Halsin hits round 2 with Shadowheart, churning that goodberry pie he already left in her into a frothy goodberry porridge. Tav sits nearby rocking back and forth, squealing in anticipation, ready to slurp it down eagerly, though still a bit queasy from all he's ingested so far today.
Breathing heavy from the exertion, the archdruid Halsin dismounts Shadowheart and steps aside, revealing the sticky mess he left in her, dripping out slowly.
Tav is still feeling unwell from the previous batches, so starts backing away. "Oh, you aren't quitting now, are you?" Shadowheart teases, casting Command: Eat.
The rich, sweet taste of goodberry and the musky scent of Halsin's thick balls mingle into an intoxicating blend in Shadowheart's warm damp Grove.
The mixture has a presence that infiltrates Tav's very pores. It will be a long time before its traces will fully disappear from around his face.
>"mmffnghhmm yes good mmmm goodberry good" Tav mumbles.

She's not your sister, she's your half-sister.

And even then, the parent you share was a deity who went around shooting his magical semen into 100 different women at the time, so once magic and deities are involved, the rules of biology can change.

And last but not least, you didn't even know you were half-sbilings-through-magic until recently, you grew up as childhood friends. It's not like you want to bang your sister, you want to bang your childhood friend who you didn't even know was your half-sister-through-magic. So it's not an incest fetish story, the fact that you're half-related-through-magic is an inconvenient discovery during a traditional friends to lovers romance.

So in my opinion, Imoen romance is ok. Especially for female ward.

Why do RPGs even bother with inventory management? It’s just a huge waste of time. Why not just make it so that your character automatically has everything they need at all times? You could just press a button and instantly have the perfect gear for any situation. Having to constantly manage your inventory is just tedious and really breaks the immersion. I mean, what's the point of having to go through a hundred menus to equip a sword or pick up health potions when you could just focus on the fun stuff, like combat and dialogue? Shouldn't RPGs just automatically give you everything you need, like a loot vending machine, instead of wasting your time with inventory micromanagement?

Multiclassing is a thing and they both classes make use of wisdom.
>>
>>537309593
Go ranger. Don't get the pet.

What you're going to want to do is get the ability that lets you share your favored enemy bonus.
Then you're going to want to cast instant enemy on the boss.

This gives a unique +6 to hit and damage to your entire team which is extremely useful. Combine that with guarded hearth and you'll hit anything.
>>
>>537309593
If you don't plan on using Ekun then ranger. Druid has some cool spells though, and you can even build into wildshaping though depending on difficulty you might need a monk dip for more AC so you can actually survive on the front line.

I want more Pillars of Eternity and modernized Infinity Engine takes. It still has the best mechanical system in the genre. I've pretty much tapped the games for all of their content after like 3k hours between them, but there's so many more characters I'd like to play. Pathfinder's gameplay is ass, and the modern turn based games don't have the same flow. Wish I could scratch the RTS/RPG hybrid itch with more than just Kenshi and Total War.

Pillars combat is okay for me, the only issue I had was sometimes you'd start a fight and just get swarmed with enemies with no way to position your tank properly.
>>
>>537346431
>he doesn't want to get swarmed by enemies

>>537346431
Initial positioning is very strong, as well as Engagement. Low engagement means enemies can just run past, but then higher engagement means investment through feats (well I think there's just the one?) or equipment.
But that's why Stealth is helpful, getting into a good position can completely change the fight.

You can cast damaging spells just not buffs. It doesn't make sense but it makes for a more fun gameplay experience because prebuffing is gay.
The system could use more stuff to do out of combat like utility spells though. Stuff like using invisibility to scout ahead or steal, lighting dark areas with magical light etc.
If we ever got a pillars 3 I would want more more interactions with the world like that. Like a larian game but without the reddit humor

Not sure if RT is like this as well but in WOTR I find that I never want to run 6 man parties simply because there's not enough members that would fit together logically. Feels like these games really push the "just mix and match people of all alignments and personalities for the bants" angle, and I don't disagree that can be fun at times but a lot of party compositions just end up feeling schizophrenic when you have to disregard the personality of the companions to put together a team that also works well mechanically in combat.

ODnD and ADnD even had titles for first 9-11 levels to show you how much you progress. Leveling up is supposed to take you far, it's a core design of cRPG from before their inception. There are some quirky low levrl campaign (e.g. some NWN mods) who keep you at level 3 or 5 but they're an exception, a quirk. No one's designing a whole-ass RPG around the idea of not progressing and staying rank-and-file.

In almost every RPG the first 3-4 levels are just boring. There is little mechanical progression. Wow, you get another whole hit die but still get to spend 20 rounds watching your characters miss. Great.
>>537381454
>lets spend 2 years of dev time making a game that is literally only accessible by players of the first game, 90% of who will have zoned out on the game since the first one was released and probably only end up playing if there was a GOTY trilogy being sold 8 years down the line and they can play all the games in one go (company will be bankrupt 10 times over by then)

Greybor is such a pathetic character. You see him once before gibbing some cultist, which at the time seems kinda cool but then you forget about him for an entire act until the little runt charges in just as you would have obliterated Darrazand. Then you get to take him on a dragon hunting safari where again we have to pretend like he's useful and you can finally look at his character sheet and its just a shitty glass cannon rogue with the same point buy a PC would have had. Why even throw a character like that at you midway through the game? Say what you will about Arue but at least her point buy is monstrous and a ranger is never really bad.

It was made by a woman as her personal smut novel
Games and books allow people to explore thoughts and feelings in a safe way they may not be otherwise comfortable with, in the same way we have intrusive thoughts like running someone over on the road. Moreover it's one of the most competent and well designed mods for NWN, was made by a single person for her personal fun. If her friend didn't convince her to release it to the public it would have never seen the light of day.

If Trannies made it they would make as much noise about it as possible, demanding clout and attention everywhere. Claiming it belongs to them is one more example of feminine erasure by the trans menace and I will not stand for it.

>100% troon consumers
This is the case, which means they are a valid consumer base to pander to and therefore should be included in every crpg

First - it makes your entire Hellfire Ray water damage
Second - it gives you +1 damage per die to spells with "Water" Descriptor
This allows you to benefit from Water Ring that you want to wear for Winter's Grasp - which is water by default.
You need Focus Element and Focus Element+ to compensate Ember's starting CHA being 17 instead of 19/20.

No saving, no resting, no stopping gigachad difficulty. Truly daring.
So far everything went really well until the Mad Kellid charged Lann and downed him in one hit, and I missclicked one of Nenios snowballs into him which killed him. Then, SOMEHOW the archers on the battlements decided to shoot Daeran to death, I guess around the time the protection from arrows scroll expired.
But I still have 1 res and a few heal scrolls so as long as I dont do any unecessary side-encounters I think I can beat Drezen. I just doubt I'll be level 9 by the time I do.

I do not understand the purpose of alignment. The only thing it seems to do is put all characters and creatures into a box for 'protection from/smite alignment' effects in combat. For roleplaying purposes, what is supposed to be the benefit?

I can understand the idea of restricting certain dialogue options behind alignments (i.e. if you want to take this action, your character has to have made enough good choices on balance throughout the game so far otherwise the action isn't credible or something like that), but that's not what any of these games seem to do. Rather they seem to sprinkle totally inconsequential decisions ('execute the traitor!' vs 'he feared for his life, let him rejoin the ranks!') throughout the story, which serve no other purpose than to offer you opportunities to nudge your character's alignment in one direction or another.

Why should anything in an RPG be based on your character being metaphysically 'good' or 'lawful,' rather than based on the actual particular decisions he or she made? Is alignment meant to be simply a shortcut to consequences because it's too difficult to make games react compellingly to the particular combination of decisions your character makes?

It seems so painfully infantile as well. Plenty of interesting conflicts and moral quandries you might want to write into any sort of media, RPG or otherwise, involve characters who disagree over what the good or lawful thing to do is. But alignment systems can't express these circumstances except by arbitrarily branding one of the decisions good and the other evil.

As far as morality goes, interesting roleplaying is surely based on the truth that the line between good and evil cuts through the heart of every person, and not labelling characters 'good' and 'evil' ahead of time.

I'd say Aldori Swordlord for a mix of fun and holding your own, it can also be also thematic to the story at least in your own head.
>>
You know what really fucked the entire Pathfinder system? Dice checks. It turned it from a tactics game to a buffing number crunching abomination where two wizards of the same level casting the exact same spell can have orders of magnitude difference in damage or effectiveness.

Compare that to AD&D where if you saw a web spell then that shit's a threat no matter if it's coming from a 3rd level or a 30th level wizard. Similarly if that 1st level fighter grabs you then all of your spells go out the window so you'd better take them seriously. And you only. have like 15 hp so if that rogue sneaks up on you you're gonna get one shot.

What are you talking about? High level casters in AD&D rape. I'll never forget meandering into the lair of a lich somewhere in BG2 and experiencing the joys of Time Stop.

Cam has access to high level spells, shaman hexes and is tanky as fuck. Also Cam only "plays with her food" if they are men. She's not into scissoring, and even if she was it wouldn't be Wenduag given how disgusted she is by mongerls in genera.

The point is that AD&D doesn't go crazy with the modifiers. A fireball is a fireball. It caps out at 10d6 and the saving throw never changes.

There's no giant library of feats or complicated system of stacking buffs. You have your set of tools and how effective they are depends on your brain not your build.
>>
>>537449075
No way to avoid fighting him. Just targeting his touch AC would be easier than trying to dispel all his buffs.

He's as retarded as his brother is, so he will never back down no matter what
He's probably the first big AC block in the game so you gotta bring all your buffs and pray for the best; at least his actual damage is kinda dogshit so he can never hit a buffed Seelah, and it turns into a very long tickle fight till you get a couple of crits

It's a rule of thumb for NPCs, for the player is utterly detrimental.
>>537435018
This would also prevent the player from discussing morality with the game/developers.
>this action is not "evil", your god disapproves of it
Video games could easily have a reputation system, so when clerics and paladins lose reputation with their gods beyond a certain threshold, they would lose their powers. But they would still be seen as a good person by most NPCs.

I just realised I made a shitty decision in a dialogue after a grueling dungeon dive that took me like 4 hours, would I be a faggot if I reload an earlier save and speedrun it in storymode?

Once you get Cackle, Evil Eye, Fortune and Protective luck you jave basically run out of good Hexes for her. You can get all that with like 10 Levels in Witch. I usually build her as 10 Witch/1 Sorcerer/9 Loremaster, because the witch's spellbook is pretty poor and getting spells from other classes via Loremaster Secrets is really really good.

It's over. I got as far as this. There's no healing, no useful crowd control spells, Daeran is dead, no buffs...
The game obviously wants me to rest before going inside the citadel. That makes no sense to me but I can't keep playing the same level over and over.
>>
>>537456295
Basically if you see a 'rest point' you should use it. The game does NOT account for narrative correctly. Although it makes since to do the entire siege in a day and most dungeons as well, the balance isn't designed around that. So if there's any kind of sanctified area/corruption reduction assume you're expected to use it.
>>
>>537456512
There were 5 rest points in Drezen. How lame do people have to be to use all of them? Rofl. And you fags call me bad.

>You arrive to a great hall where you see a great banner depicting a sword at the end, guarded by some low level cultists and one minotaur

>You run into a half-fiend furious raging assault minotaur who charges and instantly downs one of you! Roll initiative
>>Fuck ok, hit him with a grease and take turns cutting him while he's down, then get through the hallway
>>You walk into a room with a huge cesspool and massive number of ghouls start coming out, including archer ghouls!
>>Fuck ok, Nenio cast a spiked trap to stagger their approach, buff me with some blur and protection from arrows, Daeran use your last charge of bless, Lann focus on the wounded once for extra cleaving shot damage
>Once you thin out the ghouls, a Nabasu teleports in and starts sucking you for levels and life! The ghouls got Daeran! He's DEAD!
>>Um, what happened to his mysterious protector entity?
>It was sleeping!
>>Ok fuck it Lann kite the Nabasu around while the kinecist uses his last burn to blizzard it to death, we've got to be almost-
>A Vrock is about to teleport into the room but then the old lady you freed stabs it in the back in a very cool scene, then tells you to follow her to the banner while asking you if you find the demons interesting
>>I stab the old lady
>No, you can't stab the lady. You go where the old lady leads you, and you see a few gargoyle traps shooting acid and ice in front of a chest
>>Ok we
>A new kind of abyssal outsider you've never seen before teleports into the room and kills you all. Roll new characters.

Is normal, TTRPG Pathfinder as buff and CC heavy as WotR is? I cannot imagine this shit is fun to keep track of in a tabletop setting.
>Having to apply a dozen buffs before you can fight + follow timers to see when they need to be renewed
>AC is all about stacking it from as many sources as possible in increments of 3 to 7ish points usually
>Same with your hit bonuses, damage dice, spell save DCs, and spell piercing
>CMB, CMD, save scores, etc. all need to be worked out whenever you apply a ton of buffs too
>Tossing out chaining CC and several attacks a round with a shitload of damage die = constant rolling
Like, genuinely, how the fuck do people manage this?
>>
>>537458115
Hell fucking no I saw that room, remembered my last playthrough, turned around and walked the fuck away. And I had fireballs in my last playthrough.
>>
>>537459265
Monster stats are extremely inflated in WotR at least on Core or higher. Also I think your DM would just let you sit outside the boss' room just buffing up without consequence.
>>
>>537185910
why does this general still pretend to be for CRPGs at large instead of just being the designated Owlcat thread with a focus on Pathfinder?

Is anyone else actually excited for The Outer Worlds 2?
>>
>>537459265
high-level 1e can be a fucking bitch because of these issues but WotR makes them a lot worse because Owlcat buffed the fuck out of monsters and balanced the game with the expectation that above the default difficulty you are doing optimised builds and loadouts with proper buff application

if you've ever done a playthrough on a low difficulty with auto-builds and gotten through most fights with auto-attacks and the odd party-wide buff that's how most people actually play it with a permissive DM who doesn't want to have a TPK
>>
>>537459969
Do those permissive DM's allow people to reload their saves if the party gets unlucky and wipes? Because if you don't buff consistently and build well, sooner or later you'll die on normal too.
>>
WOTR peaks in the hallway before Staunton in Act 2
>>
>>537460287
I was thinking more Story or Casual than Normal. But yeah a permissive DM can fudge dice rolls to let you dodge attacks or get hit for less damage, nerf monsters on the fly, deliberately have them act sub-optimally, quietly erase planned encounters if your resources are getting too low, house-rule feats working different to help you, etc. so they're able to do a lot.
>>
>>537459861
If they can keep the quality up through the game instead of massively dropping the ball after the first planet like the first one sure
>>
>>537461080
>can fudge dice rolls to let you dodge attacks or get hit for less damage

>>
>>537457858
>Pointless because it will never be better than a protection from evil/chaos
they stack actually, I believe, even though they're both deflection.

>>537457479
Barkskin yes because even though the scrolls/potions will be low-level it's still a fair amount of time, the shield of faith (and protection from evil/chaos) are too short-lived to fiddle with so much imo. Communal poison is another good one to use from consumable all game, but I wouldn't bother with the round/level ones
>>
>>537459861
I'm definitely not exited but if the reception seems good I'll give it a try.
>>
>>537435525
Change of generation. The writers of present-day slop have not grown up reading books, at least not good books. They have nothing in their heads to draw on, no fresh ideas to contribute.
>>
>>537459265
>>537458918
Honestly? It sounds like you're playing at too high of a difficulty for your skill level. I know that hurts to hear. But I didn't do most of that even on my most recent Hard playthrough. Granted I know the mechanics of the game well by now, but I honestly don't think that level of precise care needs to be taken even on Core, let alone Normal.

>computer games and tabletop are different holy shit mindblown
I guess I'm not sure what you expect? I've got lots of complaints about WotR (and every game I enjoy, basically) but none of them are as stupid as "A computer isn't a human GM"
>>
>>537461853
>will be low-level
Does Mythic Brew Potions fix this?
>>
>>537461853
>they stack actually, I believe, even though they're both deflection.

>>
>>537462530
There is in RTWP
You have to micro your guys, kite enemies etc
>>
>>537462282
Okay, there's a distinction to be made here. The potions of Shield of Faith and whatever else you find around in the world will be very low level potions through the whole game, so these will just give you a few rounds of Shield of Faith.

Brew Potions will let you make your own potions, which are *at your current caster level*. Same with Scribe Scrolls. You can also scribe/brew metamagic, as a note.
So this means you could in theory brew Shield of Faith potions that would last longer than the ones you find in the wild, though that would be a bit of a waste as there's much better stuff. And in general, I'd recommend Scribe Scrolls over Brew Potions, but that's just me.
The trade-off of course is needing CMD for scrolls, but anyone can drink (or pour into someone else's mouth, in fact) a potion.

So basically it's as if the vast number of potions/scrolls you find in the world were made by someone 1st-5th level or so, you can think of it that way maybe.
If you have Nenio, starting at level 10 she gets to use scrolls as if they're at her level. So suddenly a piece of shit Shield of Faith that would normally last 6 seconds, would now go for a minute. (still not great, but you see how it works.)
>>
>>537462530
And yet some struggle and """need""" to spend tons of time pre-buffing and savscumming while others don't. Curious, isn't it.

Personally I hate that system. Much too swingy with alpha strikes, and God forbid if there's CC.
Much better is simultaneous turns IMO. If (You) or lurkers are unaware, that's when everyone declares their actions at the start, then everything is resolved. Typically actions have various speeds, so casting happens near the end and can be interrupted for example. In a video game it's much easier to track and implement this error-free.

>>537465186
