They were certainly meant to be in the game at some earlier point, though.Sonic Adventure 1 was highly downgraded in terms of lighting on on the GC. SA2 lacked a bunch of shadowing effects which used the DC's modifier volumes. SA2 DC abused the Dreamcast's volumetric fog features for some interesting effects, like security alarms (Iron Gate, Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) and approximated "rain waves" (White Jungle). These effects are gone in SA2B, replaced with full-screen overlays (Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) or with a rotating vertex light (Iron Gate)Sega changed SA1's palette based lighting to specular lighting in DX GC port and they barely even used it. >>538426370It's been a while since I've actually organized my thoughts on what I like and don't like about Frontiers.The open zone aspect isn't a bad idea but it's very undercooked and basically the entire 2nd half of the game is just a slogfest to go through because you're just redoing puzzles and environment obstacles that you've already gone through a hundred times. The camera is fucking awful and they needed to dedicate at least an extra month's worth of devtime to reprogram it because it actively makes most of the bosses harder than they need to be.The classic/boost stages were also very undeveloped and iirc most if not all of them were rehashed from previous games. If they could somehow blend the stages into the open zones then that would be a far better way of fusing the two gameplay functions into one while also giving Sonic the same abilities and controls he has in the open zone in the actual stages.Music was great as always with a Sonic game but whoever they had writing the game comes across as very jaded against the characters and what they have to deal with but I can't really blame them because I can't imagine trying to pick up the shitshow and mess that SEGA has already created with the past decade of failure after failure.Overall, it's definitely better than Lost World and Forces but it's still not enough for me to say that it topped Generations and Unleashed Day stages if only because the physics in the game is completely fucked and I'm convinced was programmed by monkeys.
