Haven't been a big FPS player since Counter Strike: Source, but this interests me a bit because the best part about CS:S was much content the community made for it's multiplayer. Maybe some Godot bros and /g/ bros could get together and make some custom dedicated servers like back in the CS:S days and we could sell in game ads via product placement. Such as slap an Apple Bees into the map if they pay us, put billboards up for products like Budweiser, add a coke machine if coke pays us, etc. I see a market for in game ad product placement on big dedicated servers.

In a shader(I'm using godot 3.5 lol), how do I move on texture over another texture? In pic related, the four white squares represent their own repeating uv maps(4 planes with their own duplicated uv maps). The red square is the texture I want to overlay on the white meshes' texture. Literally set a timer. Get down tone and variation of dark-light and then quickly move to the next.
Do this exercise until you feel really good at seeing contrast/light.

When I was implementing the animation, I had to make a custom script to handle the animation on the unity canvas without the animator because from what I read, it's no good for performance. Also, I had to make a version with the mouth closed for when her laugh stops. At the end, everything is working fine.

Cumball has 2.5 months left to release paper sky. How's it gonna do? I get the feeling it'd do better on platforms like switch over steam but then again switch seems to suck ass, a very child friendly and simple game did like 6x better off the switch than on it. Maybe I should only think about steam. It has the potential to get 1000 reviews but I think it's gonna get more like ... 200. Which is good, carried by dev experience, but could be bigger. The main limiting factor is the lack of humanized characters.

Wondering what's the best for unreal engine, unity and webgl based stuff. Also how close the 2nd and 3rd best options are, because Claude Opus is really expensive.

Btw I don't want to vibecode a game or gamesystem as in the benchmark example. I just want a model that can consistently oneshot task like creating an array or struct respecting the game engine rules. Working with AI coding assistants is just so much faster than without. Unless you need to debug and follow up prompt everytime, in which case it's obviously slower. Picking the right LLM and documentation/mcp/prompt makes a huge difference.

The problem really is not any grindy gameplay, especially when you realize how in a lot of games it is fairly optional content. Most of these large games have good value because you can explore and build up your character somehow. It's not just about following the main story, but you can roam around and do your own things too. I strongly disagree that you only ever need a game to be short and hyper focused. Different games for different audiences. And while I agree something like Assassin's Creed is focused on an insanely broad audience nowadays and very iterative from game to game, I can not say it is bad. (Mind you, from game design perspective, not saying AC: Shadows was amazing compared to other AC games at all). The money-per-hour worth of game content is still extremely relevant. I really believe indie devs need to focus on selling more copies at lower price, versus some ridiculous price for a 4 hour game.

I was thinking of making a game like Stronghold and I thought pixel art would be a really nice choice of aesthetic, but I’m kind of hesistant because of the size difference between the human units and the buildings. If I make the units too small then I wouldnt be able to properly portray the animations which gave the original Stronghold such a wonderful degree of liveliness. If I make the buildings too detailed I fear that I’ll just waste a lot of effort especially since Stronghold players tend to zoom out the screen to get a better game feel at the moment.

I'm a full time SWE and I have my games on my resume. Employers always ask about them in interviews, and a lot of engineers are gamers and are happy to talk at length about the games I've made. I never took time off to dev though, always just on the side. But I think it's no different than trying to found a startup or something, people will respect that you bet on yourself and took a risk, especially if game dev is relevant to the job you're applying for.

At what size can you produce quality pixel art assets taking into account having to animate them too? That is your practical limitation. I can imagine zooming becoming an issue with sprite work aswell. I have never player Stronghold but the few spritebased RTS games and citybuilders I remember had a fixed zoom level likely because of issues with cleanly scaling sprites by non-integers. With 3D RTSes you don't run into that issue. Maybe Stronghold uses multiple versions of the same asset which would increase your workload.

I really don't like the plugins and extensions I tried, buggy crap. Back to my project, time to delete the way it does some stuff and replace with something simpler before it gets too messy. This script would become a "god" script with a million lines eventually, and GDScript has no #include method, I decided to upgrade the script to a scene which just calls the script, then I have the pure code self-startup routine instantiate that scene. That way I can edit the scenes definition and drag&drop other script files into an @export array on it using the inspector. That way, if I move or rename the files, godot should automatically keep them updated through its scene @export magic, and then I just walk that list in the script calling each file, and then I can neatly put 1 purpose in 1 file to have a folder of many small files that all run when I want instead of one big file. Only other ways I can think of in godot to do this are to make lots of little plugins then tick them all on in the project settings, or to always have a main scene that you have many "component nodes" that you add to it, which is how I think a lot of other games do it, but while I'm developing I want to always use "Run Current Scene", not "Run Project", but still have the framework stuff available so I need it to auto-initialize on project startup as if it were C/C++ and main() had init_This_thing(); init_That_thing(); in it, otherwise I have to navigate start up screens and main menu and spawn into a level to test something instead of just test the current object scene on its own in isolation (maybe with a demo camera and demo animation player to test stuff with) seeing as all the objects are calling dependent functions defined in other component scripts.
