I tried that, got chased by mechhivers by the story then, and the "camping" is not camping because the place counts as an abandoned settlement, so there's no way to go back ot a place you already where before.
also, the "nomad" ideology doesn't work for them for whatever reason (at least when I tried).
And yeah, you can make your custom start with the gravship without hte hivers following you, I tried that but some raider managed to steal my core and I got stuck there, but that's my fault and found it funny, but yeah, my nomad experience ended there.

I've been ruminating on doing one after I finished my fairly standard gravship crew one and did some research. Most common complaints is the caravan system itself if you don't heavily mod in vehicles and shit. Upside is that it really does make you rethink how you play and does wonder for curbing unnecessary wealth accumulation and hoarding.

It's pretty fun. Food preservation and armor are your number one priorities, though, especially if you aren't using a mod that adds like skylights or something.

Combat doesn't work well, enemies will have both better armor and more numbers than you. With very little ways to close the gap, you pretty much have to rely on funneling enemies one by one into a 3v1. Late game raids will have hundreds of enemies with good armor, so unless you have something that can deal with large amount of enemies like OP xenotypes, animals, psycasts or magical weapons/turrets then every raid becomes a mega slog. Crossbows/Bows just don't cut it at all and having good melee pawns is significantly more important than good ranged pawns.

I'm torn between trying an overhaul of some kind (this one stood out) and doing a more vanilla nomadic tribal herders travelling to the starship kind of deal. I kinda want something that would have me engage in populating my colony via reproduction, not recruitment.

VPE definitely helps. A sidearm mod of your choice is also great for if/when your pawns get overwhelmed. Just type medieval into the workshop and pick what you like. You need to really be careful with your wealth though.

I don't think I've ever not used Pocket Sand since the first time I found it. I always thought it's weird a pawn can't keep a knife on him for backup.
I looked into extended Psycasts, but god damn it felt like a huge pile of bloat. I don't think I'm a great fan of direct damage combat psycasts too. How does the levelling system feel to use anyway? Does it actually add enemy psycasters to raids?

I went through all of grade school not knowing about trades, they don't tell you about them; and now I spend my working life aimlessly drifting from one job to another, changing when I get sick of it and also not getting any raises because that doesn't happen anymore either. These days you basically can't make more money unless you change jobs because everything is trying to squeeze as much as they can get away with out of their workforce for as little as possible.

I think it was a mod conflict, and removing the problem mod made their head layer work when disabled in NL. I recall systematically disabling sections of my mod list until their heads worked, then working backwards from that.

Sounds like what you want is NL Facial Animation and NL Facial Animation Experimentals, there are also various retextures for it if you don't like the default look. It has performance impact but as a fellow shit PC user I can say that it's really quite negligible and you can remove the mod mid save from my experience.
If you want your game to look more high resolution in general you'd want some hair retexture and/or hair addition mods, it's up to tastes so look them up yourself and decide which ones you want, along with some vanilla upscaled texture mods as well. I personally usually use a combo of Clean Textures, anon's modified Vanilla Textures Expanded that doesn't require VEF, Gerrymon's Upscaled Vanilla Textures, Gerrymon's Upscaled Vanilla Textures, Anomaly Upscaled, and Odyssey Upscaled, but my VRAM can't handle all of them at once so I take off the DLC ones if I don't plan to interact with them much.

So, like with ALL performance talk the important thing to remember is that vanilla or a relatively light modlist that doesnt have anything that's just straight up broken or coded by a fucking monkey(or if you dont notice when TPS is dipping below the levels needed to sustain whatever speed you want) then you'll hardly notice. Anomaly is BAD for performance, especially for an official DLC- it is up there with many of the "heavy impact, but not broken" mods.

Actually yeah, you can toggle it on in the menu and it doesn't stop if you close the menu.
However it seems to expose the game's hidden 3D nature and places the sound in the game world relative to where your camera and zoom level is when you toggle it on.
By that I mean if you toggle a sound on while zoomed out, then zoom in, the sound will fade as if there's a geothermal generator in the sky or something. Same if you pan the camera away.

now, are there some mods to make rimworld actually interesting? my current campaign is at 300% threat, i started as a tribe on the pole and migrated into tundra, and i have all the weapons, a gravship, thousands of resources, and too many quests to do.

my main problem is that quests and enemies give you too much loot, i've got all my power armours as tattered to control wealth and i have rocket launchers and shields stockpiled, and i've done all the royalty quests and sold like a billion prisoners and traded for gold in every settlement. all the high tier stuff just blows up wealth so i mostly have tainted power armours and grenaded pulse rifles.

maybe there is some really good gameplay mod that focuses around providing for the characters? or some sort of a story mod that turns off all the invasion spam and has more interesting enemies? maybe like a war mod where you have to run away from warmachines and armies clashing?

i intensely dislike the need to harvest all the resources and the items on a tile, and all the quests that are just "take the shuttle/horses to a tile, collect items there and enslave everyone you can", where biggest problem is in storing and moving all the shit you collect.

i can't set limitations for myself. if i can take advantage of something i will, my current playthrough started as a roleplay with all the ideology restrictions and maluses, and the first thing i did after surviving the trek through the ice cap, was reform the ideology. then we just acquired a gravship and collected resources naturally.

i'd like something with threats that cannot be defeated. like the war front event, imagine you are forced to flee because two armies will converge on your tile. or imagine pawns desiring specific things and if you don't provide them they leave, don't just get -5 to mood.

not like me building a fortress that processes raiders into legendary clothing for bulk export. which is what i naturally will do.

but like a story. the most memorable location in rimworld for me was clearing out some space base. i jumped all around with my vampire, dodging big guns and taking them out, then cleared out the internal space and even got a unique shotgun out of it.

the experience was soured by me then having to deconstruct all the fucking solar panels and collect all the uranium to shuttle back to my base. and then two more quests spawned with more resources to move to my base.

i would like to just get the shotgun and then shuttle into wilderness, or maybe shuttle to like a city, trade there, resupply, and continue with the story.

base building is my second most annoying thing to do in rimworld, after processing tiles/raider groups. i don't mind building like a cave dwelling or a house in the wilderness. but when you have to build a bunch of generators, workshops, labs, it's just a dogshit experience.

I like the naked brutality and VE tribal starts, and it's always the first few hours that are the most fun. It would be great if that period would last longer, but the game is hellbent on throwing the kinds of raids at you that almost force you to build killboxes and start playing tower defense.

I made a patch for Better Gene Inheritance and set it to make rat xenotypes dominant so a Baseliner x rat progeny would be all rats (their xenotype is still a hybrid though).

I forgot to mention rats age faster and have shorter lifespans in base HAR but it makes shit rat children because their growth score ends up less than baseliners and their growth moments are unsynchronized. This is not applicable to biorats because I reverted their lifestages (rats live as long as baseliners now).

I did some testing with better gene inheritance, and it seems better gene inheritance was updated to fix this issue.

Baseliner x Rat xenotype (set as dominant) will always produce rat offspring (both gene and xenotype).

For Ratxeno1 x Ratxeno2 Parents (both dominant)
They produce: Ratxeno1, Ratxeno2, Ratxeno1 Hybrid and Ratxeno2 Hybrid
If Ratxeno2 is not a preferred xenotype, Ratxeno2 and Ratxeno2 Hybrids would be hated.

Vanilla behavior remains the same. Baseliner x Xeno and Xeno x other Xeno produces just Hybrids. Hybrids doesn't seem to be affected by preferred xenotypes though I could be wrong on this.

In any case, this could be balanced by keeping the resistance mechanic, hell you could give give it like a +50 resistance due to them being forced to work, which slowly goes down on its own.
I find it more realistic to trust an old slave into a colonist than some random raider that just tried to kill you last week.

trance is the kind of thing you have to use strategically, like if you need to bodyblock or in a desperate situation. the irony is some anons think melee sucks because melees don't auto-target like ranged does, yet some anons hate trance because it does exactly that. if all else fails you can make use of a 1 tile wide hallway and use trance there

also one thing i just thought of, does trance fully negate the risk of mental breaks? if so it might be especially nice for sanguophages then

That's a Vole xenotype from the ratkin gene expanded/moustate mod. They're supposed to be the Asian rat race with their equipment. Hairstyles and textures from that mod are admittedly of lower quality than the base Ratkin mod, but I kept the hair and made them to appear only to Voles. I wish they have better art so I can compile a bloated Age of Empired-ish Rat expanded mod.

I did have big raids in that run. I was in a map tile that had one open side that acted as a natural killbox that I was able to fill with traps and turrets to take care of most threats.
picrel is the simple palisade I had setup to momentarily delay raids while I get the rats into position

Yeah, that's just a regular anomaly stuff. I think the issue was with either FriendHelpfulRemake or Draftable Animals - Releashed, leaning more on the latter. I accidentally selected a drafted animal to activate the structure and it apparently fucked the structure permanently. The other one works just fine. I guess no one encountered the problem because there's little reason to tell an animal to activate a void structure

It's honestly a bit too powerful, but it's great. Animals doing recreation is very cute, and them wielding weapons is funny and devastatingly effective sometimes. You can toggle on and off what work they can do and the list is very extensive, so you might want to tweak it first if you want to use it

It actually doesn't, surprisingly. At least if we were to believe in the wealth statistics. 42k item wealth for 9 cataphract armor, only 14k for all of them tainted. Same with biocoded stuff, including persona weapons.

I remember that everything except the fat textures work with THIGAPPE so I manually patched what didn't align at one point by moving the textures slightly. I think it was still a WIP but never noticed a problem from that point on. They're also the only fat clothing textures I like and some of the absolute best in general (other than ABC bodies which I also really like)
