>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, especially if you are straight, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes too
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes, that could be considered a roguelike, the same can't be said about its other modes though

What's going on here? There really shouldn't be very much variation, the entire time I've been going armorless, unarmed, and not using spells. Is there really this much variance in RNG, or am I actually somehow getting much worse at the game?

I tested out a DEFE just to check and made it to one rune before faulting with little difficulty but that's a really different playstyle so I don't know if it means anything.

It seems the new versions buffed up the early dungeon floors and sometimes you get completely shat on if you're mindlessly otabbing.
I've been trying to get into Depths for a week and only once I could. But it was because I've been playing like shit and disrespecting everything like in the good ol' days, and feels like I need to lose that part of my muscle memory to advance further.

Respen isn't subtractive, it's multiplicative.
50% lightning respen vs. 67% lightning res
67 * 0.5 = ~33 lightning res
if he dealt 1k damage in one instance to you, you'd take (1000 * (1 - 0.33)) damage, or 670 damage
You took 2/3 of what you'd normally take which is non-negligible
lightning res isn't bad to have just in case you get caught off guard or can't keep 100% downtime on disabling him but it should not be the primary defensive strategy
The main thing is to get 100% stun+daze resistance by either forging quartz onto rings or getting lucky with shops+drops, or doing both. His primary damage source stems from a debuff that he can apply when landing any Lightning attack. Usually I can get 100% stun+daze res on gear before Dreadfell which is when you're supposed to fight Urkis. Usually taking him on after first prodigy is wise.

Friend got me to pick up Barony and it's fun enough for friendslop.
The movement & kiting mechanics don't seem like the kind of thing that could be ported to a proper roguelike, but the leveling and item durability would make for a decent mini roguelike imo
Any games that do this?
>>
>>540959680
I think most roguelikes have some form of leveling up. tome4 has extensive class system. Too many classes for its own good maybe.
idk about item durability. DDA probably has it. DCSS has wands.
>>
>Elin talk
Now I'm reinstalling
This is gonna be a shitshow to get back in to
>>
>>540960129
To be more specific, Barony has several skills that range from 0 to 100, but rather than accruing experience points they just have a % chance to increase by 1 whenever you use the skill.
Similarly, every item (nearly all of them track durability) has a % chance to lose durability when you use it. It's simple and works great for a small scale game like this
>>
>>540953420
Personally I feel it's the guy who made two additional /rlg/ threads just to shitpost.

DCSS has a skill training system where exp you gain are allocated to skills in training, which is probably the closest.

Those last dungeons get pretty wild with the damage spikes they reach, and some of them even have motherfuckers at the very entrance waiting you to oneshot you immediately after you press a button.
You really have to prepare for everything before entering this part of the game.

Redeal chain or bust, Ice Form+Mirror Image is not bad.
Ask if you don't know how to Redeal yet.
You could do Priest instead of Sorcerer maybe, it's extra busted if you can do a form-swap chain.
Mehtar isn't great either, Agara or Eresh are probably baller pickups.

Alright, I ended up finging al of the best transformation talismans here at Elves 3.
Roxanne drops Statue Form and Bai Suzhen drops Dragon Form, both guaranteed.
Storm Form is really fucking solid, giving some insane evasion and even giving a bit of AC, but the real deal of this form is the amount of damage it shits out per second. It has cleave, which isn't that important now that I'm playing with the Wu-Tang Clan and those dudes already give you cleaving if you move around the targets, but it also gives you a blink that repositions your ass near someone you want to kill, blasts everyone on the line of said blink and recharges pretty quickly too. And you can even use Serpent's Lash after it to ensure you're killing whatever you're near in a couple of moves.

I'm only lacking the Death Form talisman before I tackle extended, but last time I cleared all Hells with Statue Form and Pan with Sphinx Form, so I don't know.
I'll try not to die to Tomb again this time around.

Let me out.
LET ME OUT
>>
>>541015010
You're trying to boost too many skills at once. You gotta focus on one thing you want to do at the start, because that's the thing that will let you kill and, more importantly, to not get killed.
Permafrost Erupion is not only an Earth spell, but also Ice, and it's also a level 6 one so it's not gonna be online for a looooong time, so I'd suggest you traet those boots as a normal +1 pair of boots.
Poisonous Vapour are pretty easy to cast and they don't do much if you get their power up, so only get a level in Alchemy and Spellcasting to get it online. I don't think it's a good investment of early exp, but it's not that much and it's basically a guaranteed poison on some dangerous things like early scorpions and ogres.

Geez Louise this is fucking tense.
Admittedly, this has been MUCH easier than my Paradox Mage run; basically cruise control to cool. I know PM is insanely strong, but at my low level of game knowledge there's a world of difference between juggling dmg reduction buffs while squishy and needing to do convoluted combos to do damage vs just naturally being tanky and regenerative. It's also much more obvious what kind of tier 5 gear is good on Berserker for me. So as I did the prides I got stronger and stronger until, while threatening, they were very manageable. Basically no idea what the high peaks are going to be like though.

>>
>>541027335
Heh, I probably won't play Berserker ever again. I just played it since it was the first class I had played and I was a bit curious what it'd feel like with a proper built. Answer: It's kind of cool but I don't like how low their damage is. Being literally incapable of fighting bulwarks half the time fucking sucks.
>>
>>541029221
Bulwarks and Demonologists will counter most weapon classes, not just Berserker because that's just how effective armor is; you need armor pen or just gratuitous amount of stats to bypass their armor.
That said, Berserker is definitely a low damage class. Most melees do more than twice the damage of this class.
I hope you tried Flexible Combat prodigy, it's a massive damage boost to all melees.

>>
>>541041134
You need to keep some of the stat screens open up in other windows for most of them, instead of having all of the info on the same window of the game, for one.
It's also all ASCII which can be hard to get used to if you've been playing modern roguelikes with graphic tiles.
Other than that, they tend to be pretty long, with a lot of ways to get you killed out of nowhere if you don't spoil yourself beforehand, but that could be true of a lot of games in the genre so that one gets a pass.

Does DDA still run like complete shit if you stockpile a bunch of items in your base? I've been thinking of giving pocket simulator another run but DDA's in-base FPS death feels even worse than late stage DF.
And have they added an auto-heat-frozen-food system yet or do they still expect you to manually unfreeze everything when you're hungry while reading/crafting in your base?
>>
>>541059214
Unkillable monster/psycho killer relentlessly pursue you during the entire game
>>
>>541059852
Only if it pops into your vision with absolutely no warning, then fucks off for a while. If you see it and it just murders you, that ruins all the tension. You see and get murdered by a lot of enemies in roguelikes. It'd also be really funny if it followed you around the dungeon and closed doors.
>>
>>541058913
Spooky sounds and music or lack of it, light as an actual big mechanic, gritty and scary graphics (pure ascii just isnt scary sorry), survival and puzzle type of gameplay over pure action where each enemy has specific weaknesses and interactions with the elements of the game.

The eventuality is always that no matter how scary you make a game people grow accustomed to doing the same content over and over so you should try to sprinkle in a bunch of rare random events and enemies that completely fuck with player's expectations and understanding of the game's rules.
Good example of this would be Quiet Farmstead in CDDA where instead of the usual location full of enemies that you can just blast trough with your gigastatted chad, you walk into a location that looks suspiciously safe and empty at first glance that then traps you into a timed puzzle with warped enviroment and ominous messages about your character's approaching demise as you try to complete it and the only way to escape with your life is to finish the puzzle in time.

TL;DR: Fear and Hunger but roguelike
>>
Horror is inherently non roguelike. The latter expects you to replay the game over and over, while horror depends heavily on the first time experience.

i tried 200% font and half the ui wasn't upsized so you had the same tiny windows just with huge font.
and now i'm trying 200% zoom and it's just fuzzy all over.

apparently this game has some chance to be brought back to life by void jesus, since i died about four times trying to get out of that room i foolishly entered. i wish i had a rocket launcher to just nuke that whole room instead of being forced into melee.

Ask voidbro to send you elsewhere, basically never respawn where you were. It puts all enemies back at max HP and puts you in the middle of them, which in 99.999% of cases is objectively worse than starting elsewhere (on the world map) and approaching on your own terms.

thanks anon.
is it better to take stat points or these talents for quest rewards?

on the one hand, i'm cucked by stats for stuff like mastery. but on the other hand, new talents categories seem a hard to come by
>>
>>541107783
I'm not an expert, but it depends a lot on character and build. Much of the time you'll end up with 100~ effective points of your main stat, so the bonus here is not huge (5%~), whereas a talent can be character-morphing to some degree. So I usually try to study the talents hard and see if they can be useful to me in any way, and only if none can do I pick the stats.
>>
>>541107783
It depends on your class, but when in doubt, always pick whatever stats your class uses.
If you find a Tinkerer class, that one's pretty good to unlock for anything you're playing as.
Other notabe abilities you can consider if they get offered are Curse of Death/Impotence, Premonition, Chant of Fortress/Fortitude, Foresight, Track and Vitality. Nt all of these are a must pick (unlike Tinker tree which is always worth considering and investing into if you find it), but most of them do well by just picking them up without needing to synergize with anything else you might be building.
>>
Chemistry worth picking ever for the salves? I see lots of items in the physics tree that can help my build but nothing in chemistry besides maybe salves. A lot of the resistances that you can get from chemistry gear my character eventually gets as immunities
>>
>>541109431
I think the Tinker is a one-time unlock and that guy doesn't show up after you unlock the class.
>>
>>541110913
Oh, right; you actually have to unlock that shit by doing some of the orc DLC campaign.
It's pretty fucking good and worth going through that DLC up to that point if you have it tho.
>>
>>541108105
>>541109431
is there some way in-game to tell how to unlock classes? no spoilers, please.

so far i've only unlocked summoner, but it seemed pretty weak compared to shieldbro.
i started as a human and used my category talent to add a rune slot for teleport. i'm deciding between a random 15-tile teleport and a 4-tile directed teleport.

fun story, i didn't pick up the transmog chest in the tutorial fight so i was struggling with enc for a bit
>>
>>541111334
Hovering over the locked bit will give a hint. But not a very detailed one.
In general, if you strive to "do everything," you'll unlock most things. Like doing every quest, doing every zone, killing hard enemies, etc. But there are some really tricky or niche ones.
>>
>>541111334
Nope, you just do quests and play the game and sometimes you unlock things.
I'm not too fond of that concept, but at least it makes you play different things before you always roll the OP classes.

it does lag, eventually. i have five or six tiles full of loot that's just dumped on the floor in my base, several followers working, and it feels like the game gets a little slow.

but i don't really think it's a serious issue. opening the search nearby items menu takes about half a second once you have that many items but most games have that kind of delay anyway

Every roguelike is a horror game.
>extremely punishing fail condition
>every enemy can kill you
>entire game is exploring a pitch black dungeon full of horrible monsters
>incredibly stressful and difficult even while being turn based
An fps realtime version of a roguelike would be heartattack inducingly stressful. Even the first person nethack mods are kinda spooky.

Actually that's something we could use, more first person roguelikes with sprites. Not lites either, the same exact gameplay only it's 2.5/3d. It's much more fun to explore mazes from the ground, and everything can look much cooler and more detailed when it doesn't have to be tiny tiles.
>>
>>541130072
The main issue there is in information. While it might be more tactile, it means that a monser right next to you takes up 90% of the possible pixels on screen, leaving 10% to communicate every remaining enemy to you.

Might be some way to make it work, probably by making interaction with that single monster more involved, but that's a change in gameplay.

genuinely dont get the point of gatekeeping df out of the rlg threads when its considered to be a major pillar of the trad roguelike genre at this point. Yeah, it doesnt play exactly like coq or angband or whatever but to say it's not a roguelike is silly and just keeps people out of the thread based on a "definition" that people who play roguelikes havent been able to agree on for 30+ years anyway
>>
>>541130668
bodyblocking and sightlines would obviously be more important, as would lighting.
I think it would be a neat effect. Smaller more common enemies would be shorter and narrower, letting you easily look around and see most of everything if you're fighting say orcs or wolves, but then giant horror monstrosities from hell or dragons bodyblock half the screen and are basically walking walls of flesh. It's a good contrast, especially if the goal is a horror game.

There's also the unique possibility of adding in vertical features if you go 3d. Actual staircases/bridges/flying/swimming. Really impractical and difficult top down, very easy and natural in first person.

>>
>>541158240
Oh, you wanted a NOT retarded point. Sorry, that didn't seem to be what you were going for, so I settled for prompting you to continue.

Zero decisions concerning what I like are dependent on any authority at all. If an authority decided that steak was made of sawdust, I would still like steak. The steak I like would still be made of meat. The steak I like would just be a different concept from the steak the authority governed. An alteration of an external concept does not alter an internal concept.

The topic wasn't "does it work" the topic is "is it good". The midpoint between those is "is it worth doing", but that's a conversation for after you've decided how good, how effective, and how expensive it is. Switching between the three freely just halts all possibility of meaningful and not retarded conversation.

While it's true that you can't halt the flow of millions of people choosing to do things which they enjoy. Gatekeeping people out of playing dwarf fortress seems really really hard. Even gatekeeping people out of calling DF fortress mode a rougelike would be basically impossible if they all decided to do that, because you can't gatekeep other people out of their own actions, particularly when they will never read what you say.

You can gatekeep what discussion you willingly engage in on a tiny thread, cause that's not hard, and that's the gatekeeping in question.

Now I'm going to go gatekeep a glass of water into my body, and I'm going to do it despite the fact that thousands of people, if not hundreds, are involved with water.
>>

Can someone provide sound, logical reasoning for classic roguelikes needing ETERNAL updates? Why can't they just be released, done and over with? Why do they always need "fixing"?

The constant "updating" just seems to result in degeneration of the game's nature to suit a specific handful of players. I don't get it.
>>
>>541189026
Because most of the time the devs can't think of everything upon release. No human is perfect. And everything men creates is a work in progress in the first place.
>>
>>541189026
it's difficult to tell apart legitimate criticism from degeneration to suit suiting a specific handful.

>>541189026

>>541194237
>There are myriads of RLs, and even more if we count forks. Which is the point: if you wanna change something, just make a new fork or whatever.
Don't act obtuse over something this simple. You were talking about a singular roguelike getting updates, changing. That inherently implies things changing or staying the same within one project, one roguelike, and argument is about that and only that. 'Play a different game/fork' is not a valid respone because the developer of one roguelike, the only person in control of change, is the developer of only that one, specific game and only has interest in things concerning it.
You, as a consumer, might hop onto a different thing if you want something different, he can only change that one thing he cares about. Expecting him to make a new fork/game for every change is absurd, especially since the same is achieved by you downloading an older build.
Roguelikes get updates because the players want it, and therefore the developer wants it. Those few who don't can still play old builds. There, two different levels of 'why' answered, now stop asking dumb questions and play something.

The post I replied to saying that was the one to mention players getting tired as the reason for the changes, which, as you yourself are implying and somehow thereby also contradicting yourself, has nothing to do with the game, but with their desire for something different/new; in which case they're welcome to try another RL, not arbitrarily deface an established one to fit their every want and need. Much like you're trying to do with my conversation: if you think it's dumb, ignore it and/or talk about anything else; no one's forcing you to reply, so why are you trying to force ME to stop posting? Likewise, audiences should force games to change for them. That happens with no other kind of game.

It's a product, not a piece of art. It exists to bring entertainment to the consumer through gameplay. Regardless if you agree or disagree with that statement, it's value is derived from the observer and not in of itself. Maybe there is some metaphysical value from the latter but it bears no impact on what a customer desires and I can't be bothered to give a shit about what a bunch of code wants. In case the customer is someone like you: older builds. There is no impact of whether or not it changes to people like you who can just download the older, locked in time version. You already received few different answers why change happens on multiple levels.
>The post I replied to saying that was the one to mention players getting tired as the reason for the changes, which, as you yourself are implying and somehow thereby also contradicting yourself, has nothing to do with the game, but with their desire for something different/new
It's not contradictory, what the players see is what the game is, and that something transforming from a new, fresh experience into a known, stale thing is the natural progression of everything. To dismiss this is to ignore reality of how things are, you are not working with a constant, eternal turnover of new customers that you can ignore what the current playerbase thinks and wants, and what the majority wants is more.
>not arbitrarily deface an established one to fit their every want and need
Describing updates as defacing is purely on you, and AGAIN: old builds.
>Much like you're trying to do with my conversation: if you think it's dumb, ignore it and/or talk about anything else; no one's forcing you to reply, so why are you trying to force ME to stop posting?
Because you are doing a dumb thing, not the question, but shutting off the responses you dislike by being willfully ignorant and living in your own reality. You refuted no response in a satisfying manner but plowed through. It's and eyesore.

i like this kind of stuff. i like when roguelikes have lore i can investigate and nerd out about.

So about Brogue, the machines are chunks of code that tries to construct a sort of event (like a trapped altar with a statue that wakes or a goblin warren)
https://github.com/tmewett/BrogueCE/blob/master/src/variants/GlobalsBrogue.c
This stuff is very interesting, I really should have spent time reading this a long time ago.

You get negative HP more than the HP you lose.
(In this game you don't die until your HP is lower than negative HP, which by default is 0 but this item lowers it further)

Reminds me of NPC Quest. You just buy the equipment, pick a zone, and watch.

update: i died, voidbro didn't save me this time

and holy shit archmage gets -4 hp/level?? ridiculous
>>
>>541220126
Archmage is weak to surprise attacks but it has a self healing spell that can crit, and a passive that makes a shield per point of damage you heal. In lategame with 80+% crit rate that means a 3000+ damage shield
regardless of class a piece of equipment that gives flat +30 hp is far and away better than +7% damage for your class's element or some other offensive effect for the first 25 or so levels. Mainly you'll find that on lanterns and cloaks

The problem with Arborus is that it's a fuckin lead-weight albatross around your neck.
Any build that wins WITH Arborus is a build that would've won without it.
Trying to focus on making the actual treeform/summons work is suicidally impossible.

>>541193763
There are plenty of PoA builds that lend themselves to optimal play not just being autotabbing, bud.
Please get your opinions from someone besides Sseth

I was just thinking anon was talking about idlers
>>541213347
Rift Wizard 2 has evolved to pure esoterica, I think the dev balance there tends more towards "degenerates to the preferences of a small niche of players" because... It'd be like if the PoA dev decided to nerf every successful combo because he wanted you to "engage with the mechanics and not just pick good powers" or something

that does sound pretty good. i saw it in the perks when i was looking at it, but 3000 is a lot. my archmage died already, level one, ha... i made a bunch of mistakes, so i should try again.
bulwark was great, i got about 100 armor with about 100 armor effectiveness... but ultimately got killed by a mage that chunked me for 300+ a bunch of times.
i should have stayed clear of those areas until i got some form of magic defense online.

in the base that i discovered, there were some things like 'training facilities' that needed energy. will i discover what that is on my own? no spoilers please
>>
>>541223021
Not... Really?
If you've already explored the fortress and fucked off without figuring energy out, you're doomed to never figure it out yourself.
If you wanna get into that, just go back and link your rod to the orb
>>
>>541223748
yeah i did that. it spawned the squid and i talked to him, he said not enough energy.
i couldn't understand any of the writing, so maybe that's something i need to do.
i'll go back there on a different character
