It would just be considered a shitty 90s game that's only remembered by nostalgiafags while everyone else either ignores it or plays along to not offend you, but can't offer any legitimate praise or criticism because they have no interest in playing it. The only game that would be relevant would be Sonic 1, because that's the one the nostalgiafags would remember. Luckily we don't live in that world, we live in a world where the Sonic series is a huge success, it was able to evolve and stay fresh, it keeps getting new fans, and we can all enjoy great amazing like SA2 and Unleashed, or even more direct evolutions of the classics like the Advance trilogy, while still understanding and appreciating the old, limited games, thanks to the newer ones keeping them relevant. I think one of the reasons people hate whisper and the diamond cutters is they feel too real. They're real people (animals) put in really horrific settings and are appropriately reacting to those settings.
