Every game that has had boost has had exceptionally lazy stage design, yes, even Unleashed and Generations. They are hallways. At best, they borrow, if not steal the base levels and it never feels good to control. I hate boot so fucking much be cause we got the same game like 15 times and Im fucking sick of it. Spinach also requires two inputs, on top of being far less overpowered than barreling through large mobs of enemies because I hit one fucking button. Spindashes give you short bursts of speed, boost lets you barrel through fucking anything. In Frontiers they changed it for the open world, but since that fucking sucks to play, that really doesn't matter, because it acts like normal in Cyberspace, which again, we're rehashed levels. All because boost invokes hallways.

However I think the rest of your post lacks nuance. Unleashed especially isn't lazily designed at all, it's just a very different style of level design/moveset compared to what came before. Even still, I think all the potential the boost gameplay had was already exhausted by Rush Adventure and Unleashed, which I consider to be two of the best games in the series. It really should not have stuck around as long as it did. And I think Kishimoto agrees with this, because his games DO try to break away from the boost. Thing is, they do that by focusing on Mario-style 2D platforming with occasional minigames like the Wisps or 3D sections that are just bland, simplified, and uninteresting imitations of Unleashed. Colors, Lost World, and Forces are advertised as 3D Sonic games, so Sonic fans go into them expecting a 3D Sonic game. Not a Sonic-ified version of NSMB occasional Unleashed ripoff segments thrown in. So the 2D gets ignored and the extremely bland 3D is all you're going to pay attention to. And as for quickstepping, just look at the Colors final boss and how they recycled its gameplay for several games. That's not a boost issue, you could remove boost and the lazy rail placement and quickstep hallways would still be there

I think the homing attack is the worst thing that has ever happened to this franchise. Implemented because they were too lazy to come up with a way to implement sonic in 3d space and applied a band-aid fix, and it has been here ever since. Imagine if we had gotten sonic 64 first
