AI voice acting is literally the most ethical use of generative AI.
The voice actors on sites like ElevenLabs both consented and are being paid when you use their voice.
Both AI code and AI art models are trained on the stolen works of creators who will never see a dime for what the AI produces.
Guess what /agdg/ is okay with though? Hint: Its not AI voice acting.

Agdg should study board games to realize there's only a few objectives that exist in game design.

Most of game objectives boils down to getting the most tokens, conquering most territory, killing all the other pieces, killing the king piece, getting most points, collecting all tokens, reaching the end of the level or a certain position, surviving enemy waves and surviving the timer.

I've been keeping this character a secret for a long time! This is Fygoon's Horrible Ex who left him for General Grex! She's a tramp (but you can see why Joey would go for her, look at that body!). Her mission in Chapter 20 of the Frydarian Tale is a tale of distraction as she tries to blind you to your mission at hand. Find out more next DD!

PS She's only 6 in Frydarian Years for all my CHADgooners out there!

Not all of them. Plenty of them are balanced such that you don't get fucked by simply getting unlucky. Some of them are even "too easy" because it's consistent to get a good build. In some you need to grind out the meta progression to be able to win.

It's been a while that I've seen one where you can get fucked by the RNG to the extent that you can in Megabonk.

big brain mode
you're either a peasant boy sneaking up into the castle or a young prince, and you have daily limited activities in which you can interact with maids. Since there's so many of them I imagine you need to have a big mansion and they should have different tasks to do. As such you can help them in various ways to gain their trust. Simple interactions at the beginning like talk, question and watch will lead you to clues what the girl needs (like a better watering can when you see the girl has problems tending flowers or maybe girls are talking angrily so you can talk to them about it and ease the drama). Each correct action gains you points of trust and with those new options for girls are unlocked, like touching, talking dirty, seduction etc. I imagine most of the gameplay would be about talking and picking correct answer to limit asset production and decrease the minigames, but special actions, like giving a rare flower that you managed to cultivate, or baking a cake that you made could add extra layer of gameplay. Now get this - you learn how to bake a cake from one maid and you give that cake to another for a major affinity boost. You could use one maid to seduce another and so on!
Cris, this idea is golden, just don't drop it.

anyone like my game idea: its a game that looks and plays like Space Station 13 (aka absolute shit) but whats important is what you can do in it and the fact it has 100+ players online. rounds are 1-3 hours long, the beginning of a round is earth in 2030, completely controlled by jews just like irl, but now they have their AI Slave Control Grid fully enacted, social credit score, drone strikes on citizens, etc, all the fucked up shit they already have irl to keep us enslaved and more. the goal is to overthrow them even though they have every advantage. its a covert ops game, kinda like wargames.

>The most reliable way to ensure your game doesn't flop is to make a good fun game that people want to play.
And the most reliable way to do this is through providing playtesting periods and acquiring user feedback. It's very easy to become delusional about your game. It's wise to avoid these delusions by seeking external opinions. Without this, you'll likely release a game that only you enjoy. Not good. Flop.
Get feedback.

You don't understand what playtesting and feedback is. Most amateurs don't. You just hear major studios like Valve say to do playtesting and then parrot that idea, without doing anything Valve actually does. Playtesting and feedback does not mean to beg random internet anons, or worse: random internet gamedevs, to play your game and provide written feedback about how they would like your game changed. That is worse than useless. It's actively detrimental to your game.

As a game developer, you should have a vision that you want your audience to experience. Your game is a medium through which to trick your audience into having that experience. Playtesting serves to validate that your audience is actually falling for your magic tricks the way you expect them to.
>>
>>541643279

>>541643161
NTA, but I often sit cross-legged on my computer chair anyways, so it can't be that bad. A backrest would be nice though. However, I just looked it up and a floor chair with a backrest cost almost as much as a real chair.
>>
>>541642635

>>
>>541643420
>he just made a written feedback
>>
>>541643693
No. All the flicker = just a pixel art shader. The art style was never the hard part. The open world RPG part is.
>>
>>541643420
Begging random people for advice is not playtesting. Promoting early builds of your game to build a community of people who are interested in the premise of your game, offering playtesting sessions to them, and acting on their feedback, is the best way to ensure your individual delusions about what makes a game "good" don't ruin the experience for players. Additionally, if you iterate upon community feedback, this will strengthen their support for your game, and significantly improve its reception upon release. There is no debate about this. Pre-release promotion for the sake of community building and player feedback is absolutely beneficial to increasing the performance of your game. Absolutely. It shouldn't even need to be stated that not all feedback is good. If you're making an RPG, and some 12 year old from TikTok tells you to turn it into a fast-paced FPS, you should know that this advice is useless. If you do have a unique personal vision for your game, user feedback from playtesting will help you cover up gaps in the game that you may have never considered. You don't need to do this, you can release your game exactly as you made it, but there are zero downsides to high quality community building and playtesting. Zero. Absolutely zero.
>>
>>541643759
What is a pixel art shader? Low res filter? Because that's not it.

The stuff in the distance is way too stable. If it were a low res render everything in the distance would flicker like hell. The flicker you see is mostly at the edge of objects.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p0pE9RHFKg 4k video I found on google
>>
But, I mean, if you don't care about making sales or receiving good reviews, then you can stick solely to your vision. Make your passion project, and have fun. 30 reviews in 2 years is great for a passion project.
If you want your game to perform well, however, then it's entirely reasonable to ensure the community of people who your game is designed for, can provide feedback for it before release, and support it after launch.
People wonder why Megabonk did so well. It's because the developer did *exactly* this. He farmed pre-teens on YouTube Shorts and TikTok, asked them for feedback, and made the most viral goyslop of the year.
You can make a game you personally enjoy, but this does not mean others will enjoy it. Brace yourself for a disappointing post-launch performance.
>>
>>541644080

I don't know who you're trying to convince. I'd say yourself, but you don't even have a game. There's not a single game ever that flopped that otherwise would've succeeded if the dev had only gathered more playtesters. Games fail or succeed on a much more fundamental level. Genres with high replayability and randomness such as roguelikes lend well to community playtesting because you can indeed convince some audience members to replay your game for the twelfth time, but this does not necessarily work for other genres. For every dev that manages to come up with more fun synergies for their roguelike through playtesting, there's another who manages to balance the fun out of their game.

Any dev with more than three brain cells already understands pre-production market planning. Before they write a single line of code or make a single asset, they already know if they're going to continuously put out playtester builds throughout alpha the same way that they would if they're going to do a kickstarter or early access.
>>
I hate how long it can take to add a simple sprite sometimes. It's always worth it in the end but man to sit there and render all the images, properly configure the alpha (because blender fails at this for whatever reason), import into godot, create atlas, merge atlas, create scene for every direction, add necessary things to every scene, add scene to collection and everything inbetween can be exhausting just to be like "Oh cool now I can place X on the map yippee"

Some of that data should be possible to extract, other of it should be possible for the developer to easily set in a text file or some other way. Some of it should be possible to calculate, though that can admittedly be more work and effort and for some kinds of things not yield as good results as manual handling.

Are there still data that requires manual handling after that?

Have you seriously never made tooling for a game or non-game project? Or just made a library, with good, reusable abstractions? Sure, it doesn't always make sense for everything, but it does make a lot of sense in some cases. A developer complaining about spending lots and lots of time on the same manual labour is a red flag for these kinds of things.

That XKCD cartoon applies to some cases, but not all, just as I discussed. It can be difficult to predict and ascertain which is which, and the XKCD cartoon makes that clear. But it doesn't change that some tasks do in practical experience benefit a lot from and saves a lot of time from automation or semi-automation. Heuristics and experience can be used to guess and estimate whether automating or semi-automating a task will pay off decently well in practice.

Aspects such as difficulty of automation, time spent on developing automation vs. time spent manually, quality increase or decrease from automation, etc., can be considered when deciding whether to automate or not.

Why is it so hard for some of you to accept the fact that different people enjoy different genres of video games? Imagine if you went to a sports bar as a football fan and started screaming at other patrons who are there to watch golf or basketball. Imagine if you smashed your radio while turning for your favorite rock station because you accidentally landed on a country station. I think it's because as developers, some of us want to make games that receive similar success to the "fomo/slop" type games, but struggle to develop them, because we lack the passion, joy for, or understanding of what people enjoy about these games. I think the best way to progress is to revolve your games around your passion, and at most, casualize the more difficult or offputting elements of your game to have larger potential appeal. Blatantly copying successful games is a recipe for failure, if you don't have passion for their design. You won't know what makes them good. Your game won't be unique. You will underperform.

>>541652878
I didn't say idle games were good, I just said that out of all of the casual "slop" games I've played, they were the ones I enjoyed the most. That does not mean I even genuinely enjoyed them, compared to other games that I did genuinely enjoy, but that I found them more tolerable than the other games of this nature.

You'd be right in thinking that. for some reason indie devs really like to make horrendous trailers without even spending a second researching how to make a good one for an indie. They enjoy AAA trailers from established studios during captive audience events like E3 or equivalents, that ease you in and intrigue you before revealing what the game is about. don't do that. don't ask for trailer editors to do that.
finding an editor is tough, as soon as someone makes a hit trailer they will 10x their asking price. I'm gonna make my own but follow the advice of derek lieu

This sounds like an issue with an autistic lack of empathy, or simply a lack of interest in human psychology, which is really the basis for game design. You don't need to personally enjoy something yourself in order to be able to understand why other people enjoy it. Personally, the burger I make for myself is a 93% grass-fed smash with fat-free cheese and 40-cal multigrain bread, but if I'm going to open a burger restaurant, you know damn well I'll be making it with 80% or fattier mix on a buttered brioche bun.

Both of these could be very true. I only care about my individual passion.
What others enjoy, if I do not also enjoy it, then they are wrong, and should stop.
What others enjoy, if I also enjoy it, then they are right, and should continue.
This mindset makes it easy for me to work on games I am individually passionate about, but I struggle with designing games around how they would make others feel. I only know myself, in this situation. Not good.
My best hope is to make a game that I truly enjoy, and simply hope others can be made to enjoy it as well. I can not read minds. I can only assume what others would feel based on categorizations of ideas and emotions. Maybe making the protagonist strong would make players happy? Maybe making the antagonist disgusting would motivate players to defeat them? Maybe using triple-A quality assets will make the game feel worthy of a higher price? Maybe making the assets by hand will make the game feel more charming to others? Maybe making the mechanics simple will make the game accessible to a larger audience? Maybe making the mechanics complex will make the game more hardcore and develop a more passionate fanbase?
I don't know. I can't predict any of these things. I don't live in the minds of others. I can assume how they would react, but I can not confirm. This lack of confirmation leads me away from taking the emotions of others into consideration.
All I know is what I feel. I will make the game I enjoy. I will hope it is successful. I will hope people enjoy it. I can not confirm anything. I do not rely on the unknown.

game design mega secret
the gameplay is merely an accessory of the story
gameplay exists only to increase immersion within the story
the story is the basis of the appeal for your game
the gameplay is only there so the player can enjoy the process of progressing through the story in a more immersive manner
focusing on gameplay and mechanics before a story is developed is like putting the cart before the horse
understand the story first, always
development will proceed much more smoothly if the context of your game is established before a single asset or line of code has been created
development hell is when you have a hodgepodge of nearly-completed mechanics, but no context for the game, which is derived from the story, to utilize the mechanics within
let this be fully absorbed in your mind

Vladimir Putin made a series of edicts over the following two years with the aim of revitalising the Russian games industry; these were ridiculed by outside observers as ineffective and impossible to fulfill. Putin effectively legalized piracy,[92] and ordered the creation of a "Russian Electronic Arts" and a game engine to compete with Unreal.[93] In 2023 he also ordered the creation of a game console on par with the Playstation 5 and Xbox in only three months.[94] Kommersant reported that such a project would take a decade, and others have noted that restrictions on importing chips to Russia would make that even more challenging. Techdirt questioned how well Putin understands the game industry given that he was 71 years old at the time of the console order.[95]

The first frame keeps skipping, as evidenced by the print string. Not sure how to fix it:
https://files.catbox.moe/brbovw.mp4

Chatgpt's response
>The issue is that your first frame of rotation uses the difference between the current mouse position and the initial mouse click position, but Initial Mouse Click Position is being updated after you’ve already applied rotation. That means the very first frame has a large offset (because it’s using stale data), so your object “snaps” or “jumps” before settling into smooth rotation.
But chatgpt's answer to the problem was nonsense...

The first time I click the "nonsense position" is the initial input of the mouse click. It updates and "sets" the initial to the current "after" setting the rotation at the very last node.
>Initial mouse position -> Current mouse position
Which is why the first click "jumps". Dunno how else to describe it, and chatgpt just drew me a 4 year-old crayon drawing.
I have no idea what it sketched, but chatgpt detailed the problem well. I think.

make gameplay and story hard but possible

It's here, this is the line of code it needs a miracle and I feel I've tried everything. Setting the variable before setting the World Rotation makes sense to me but that breaks it. I just dunno, I've tried. I got the camera and rotation and modeling but this one line of code is taking all my time.

Thank you, I really appreciate the time and effort but I think you're describing something different.
I mean to continuously click (hold down mouse button) and drag like an item viewer (resident evil)
Traces seem as if they wouldn't work in this scenario.
Either I'm too stupid (likely) or we have different goals (to rotate an object by clicking and holding a mouse button).
Clicking and holding the mouse button creates this result. It should be all 0's in the Print String, but the "current" mouse position (-236) shows for the first frame causing the "skip" as shown by the Print String.
Thanks either way, I do really appreciate it.

It's just added value, if two guys make a platformer game and they are both very similar in core mechanics and progression the game that will stand out is the one with a better setting, characters and plot development. Simple as. This also applies for porn and any other media that doesn't have storytelling as its main purpose.
>>
If your game doesn't have a STOWWY, your players will invent their own, and since no one compete with their imagination, it'll be better than the one you would have come up with. Writing a story is a waste of time and psychological makes your "game" (not really a game anymore, is it?) worse.

Fortnight and Five Nights at Freddy's will one day be viewed as very high quality compared to the slop to come. I'm not really bothered by slop. It really only affects game devs who need money from investors. And even then, it's not like hollywood where niche artistic movies that don't do well in theatres now don't have renting either, so they don't get made. Niche indie games without mass appeal can still sell well.

Let me tell you guys something. 85 IQ was once the level for what was considered retarded. They had to lower this because 85 is the average black IQ for a black in America. It's even lower in Africa. Much of Asia is also essentially mentally retarded. These people ALL have phones and many have internet. They can't play Ocarina of Time, they are retarded. They play literal brain dead slop and fashion games. Slop isn't ending, the market is growing. But that doesn't mean good games won't be made.

starting to do visuals for the fps mini-section of my game. for now its a quick model I made in blender, trying to go for something inspired by an old radio or guitar amp

the vacuum tubes brightness is tied to how much ammo the player has, so they'll be off when you run out. The little VU meter on the side is gonna animate when firing secondary blasts (still havent decided what that'll be)

prob gonna improve the textures and add more knick knacks. also you can see the beginnings of my custom Bloom effect, I'm still working on that so it's not exactly how I'd like it to look (i have custom fog as well and they don't work well together if both are enabled. I got it to finally work after about 7 hours today.
GetMouseX doesn't work in widgets, it always returns 0.

The Player Controller has no idea what is happening to the mouse once it’s over a widget - hence 0. OnMouseMove in the widget using "cursor delta" FINALLY worked in the OnMouseMove override in the widget.

Isn't carmack a programmer not a writer?
It's not justifiable to expect him to give good advice on the writing side of gamedev, just like it wouldn't be justifiable to expect a writer to give good programming advice. Giving particular relevance to that statement is the actual issue. People are disregarding his field of expertise and devolving it into a matter of personality, that whatever he says is relevant automatically because it was the successful guy that said it not because he is a person that is particularly insightful about the subject.

I've made an awesome feature but I'm not going to use it anymore because it gives too much overhead when actually making the game. I'm considering making it an unlockable or something. How depressing.

Wrong question. ask yourself what you're good at creating. that has to be the hook. if you can't do music you don't make a solo rhythm game. If you can't write you don't do a walking simulator.
If you try to learn on the job you might realize your skill cap isn't high enough for what you were trying to do.

I went to sleep and didn't reply to this. But no, there's no data to extract, what the fuck are you even on about it. We're talking about sprites here of varying degrees.

For example, let's use the one I just finished. I have to first render the object with a transparent background for all 15 frames, then I have to render it black for all 15 frames. I then have to go into gimp and color to transparency the black layer for the proper alpha result (this is the only thing I could see writing an add-on to gimp would be fantastic) NOW I have to do this for every direction I plan to have the sprite use. Now, once I have all of these frames generated I have to go into godot and make an atlas which you make based on 1. sprite count, 2. canvas size so it's always different. Then you have to make a new scene for the object and begin to add the specialty things it may have (like collisionpolygon2d, lights, animation) The animation could have multiple modes or an on/off running version. So you'll have to add the animatedsprite2d then create the animation from the atlas and adjust all the animation settings. For lights you'd need to manually add them to the sprite in the location you plan on them existing including their shadow and depending on what the light is/and or doing the script for the light as well which has to be unique to that object because it's going to have a different @onready var per scene. Now for the part for the scene onwards you'd need to duplicate and adjust the scene for every direction of the sprite.

I'm not sure exactly what data you're expecting to extract and calculate to automate nor why you're talking about sprites this way, you do sort of sound like what >>541648286 said.

But they have to be an exploration of NOVEL mechanics. Not vampire survivors #126
A game can also be a clone with no new mechanics, but it has to not only blow previous games out of the water, it also has to look like it does from the capsule and trailer. This is a higher barrier and not one that i would willingly aim for when trying to make a successful indie game

Game development legitimately has nothing to do with programming. It’s 100% about assets and features.
You can learn the basic principles of programming in one fucking day, and learn more advanced topics ad hoc. Furthermore almost ALL programming problems in game dev have been solved. With the advent of online resources and AI if you can’t code you might be brain dead.
Yeah you’ll bang your skull into your screen for a few days, but building fundamental systems only takes a few months, sooner if you’re not such a lazy bastard like me. And the head banging get easier over time because ultimately programming is an analytical skill. Features take more time but that’s cause after the skeleton a game is literally just features aka fun.
BUT THEN THERE ARE ASSETS
FUUUUUUUUUUUCK AHHHHHHHHHHHH literally event horizon tier levels of psychological torture. Or hell raiser.
And no you, an indie faggot cannot afford to have private artists making all your assets. Cause after fun style is everything. And asset creation is not analytic there is no speed ups, there is just brutal grinding.
If you weren’t grinding 10 years ago, either start now or give up. No bullshit, you can’t avoid the time investment if you’re an indie solo dev. So either genuinely give up, become a pathetic soulless YouTube dev (never gmi), or shut the fuck up and start grinding

I try to work through it but it's hard because working within that "push through it" state of mind skews my perception 180 degrees. On one day I find myself being able to work on my stuff effortlessly and making good progress while remaining reasonable in my judgement towards the results. A single day later I can barely bring myself to fix a few lines of code because I can't gather any clear thought all the while I'm cursing my game and think it's garbage all of a sudden. Usually that happens within same day even. Knowing that I'll not only waste my time but also endanger future progress makes me hesitant to work by schedule without taking these mood swing into account.

The only time I think "Idk how I'd program that" is for online multiplayer or games with 10,000+ units on the screen at once. And I have an idea about the 10k. Everything else is fairly easy. I can't think of any mechanic I couldn't add in a 40 hour work week. Most features I can finish in under 8.

ngl I do think league and dota would be better if they removed heroes or at the very least rotated them per season. overwatch only has like 44 characters and that's already quite a lot. if they doubled that it would be even more of a nightmare to play with all what's already happening on screen. a game like league having nearly 200 heroes to learn and master doesn't really feel overly complex it just feels tedious and overwhelming.

I think it looks worse, because now the tip of the horn feels disjointed, whereas before there was this continuity between the eyes and the horn, that was cool, I think it looks better for the exact opposite reason you explained to that other anon in your post. If you ask me, the first time is the best, you had it nailed down, any reiterations after that first original concept are just a bastardization of it, that's just my philosophy anyway

>>541709281
lmao this still won't release in three years and you'll be saying "but you guys said you wanted this feature!" brother take ownership of your game this is one of those taste things, choose according to what you like
>>
>>541709281
Bosses should always be introduced properly and ALWAYS have a checkpoint right behind their entrance. Don't make the introduction take too long though. That saves up a LOT of frustration, I think it's worth it even if it's not very polished.
>>
>>541710402
>this is one of those taste things, choose according to what you like
How can you guys be so useless... It's almost impressive. This is the one thing that is not a matter of taste. If you just throw the boss at the player like you would in a NES game, you'll just sour the fight and make the player mad.

Better. You should also add a health bar for him, that's the one essential thing missing right now.

Normally I'd assume some sort of boss intro text thing is planned and just not yet implemented, but with you it'd probably be best to confirm: you are planning an intro text overlay for the boss, right?

I just have the level title at the start of the level in the safe area have the name of the boss is that acceptable? Does it have to be during the boss camera intro?

>>541711470
>camera disappears into narnia
>focus on the boss
>neglect to inform the player that they've teleported somewhere new
>fail to establish the scene

How are you so bad at gamedev after all this time?

Yes it has to have a freeze frame moment with the skewed top and bottom bars and a close up of his angry face and the title and the text better have a visual gag like a beak coming off one of the letters and then the fight starts
>>
>>541712041
It's your game. You don't "have" to do anything. But surely from your experience playing other games, doesn't it feel like something's missing from the camera intro?

Is my level select UI good enough? Should I add text that says "PRESS A TO ENTER LEVEL" or something and not just the "!" mark?
>>
>>541712631
is this bait?
>>
>>541712631
That's a cute hub world. Just replace the '!' with a "Press A" balloon or something.

How do you not know this already?
Years into developing the game you should already have this intuition. Obviously, the ! is enough. The players are going to press various buttons when they hover over the level and when one of them works, they'll know it's that one. You can also do the other one, but depends on what you're going for. Will the text take up too much space on screen? Doesn't really matter that much but you having to ask this question tells me that you're simply grinding out the game instead of building, testing and learning from it and then developing intuitions.
>>
>>541713107
xe got groomed by the inner circle, just like that anon with the rolling ball game
>>
>>541712631
That cloud trail is way too visually noisy. But that's a minor nitpick compared to a potentially big concern: please tell me that isn't free movement you're doing between the level hub choices.
>>
>>541713107
>The players are going to press various buttons when they hover over the level and when one of them works, they'll know it's that one.
That always sucks. Don't let players rawdog your shitty ui just because you couldn't be bothered to put some clear instructions on the screen.

Something I still don't get is why games are better when their resources are scarce, or at least not 100% free.
is stuff I learned from actually making a lot of games.
It's just things I know I need to add, but, at the same time.
It's like why?
My point is that it's psychology.
But at the same time, sometimes you stumble upon things you know work, but damn, sometimes you wonder why, like, is fun nothing more than adding the proper ingredients?
It's fun nothing more than saying than a dish is tasty?
But sometimes you wonder, why, why does sugar makes coffee better, I think.

I mean, imagine if you've composing for years and years, and everyone thinks that massive symphonic works of 5 hours with 500 musicians is the way to go, so everyone just try to compete with the most expensive symphonic work. But you've discovered in your room that the secret of music is not 500 musicians, and that people want is an emotional journey, no quantity.
It's a lot like how small childrens want isn't a movie about regret and production, what deep down kids want is some toys with soldiers they put to fight, or to roleplay as mom and dad and kids and a little marble to enter the hole
