I have a 3d artist background, I want to get better at making characters and animations. I know basic programming from a few different university courses. I prefer Godot because it's language is easy to work in. I've tried making a bunch of more serious games before but the massive block of interconnected complex systems needed to make something like a RPG is too much for me and I always get tired of working on it in the coding stage before i even can get started making art. The path I took was, follow a tutorial for a genre you are interested in making. Follow it. Preferably 1 long tutorial with like 100 videos. Just take a month and do it. I'd avoid people that overly complicate shit like Tutorial Monkey. Once you finish that, buy either chatgpt or grok, or if you have no money then just switch between the two, and start making your game. Hard part is figuring out where to get art, and time.

Anon, for entire decades the industry was pretty much split into "Japan" and "the rest of the world". Even 2000's european games got bundled in as "western games" despite being very different from the US scene, because Japan was just that big of a player. It's only recently that China, Poland, Finland and some other countries are starting to get placed on the map.

I think of it like great filters.

1) Bad game
Your typical undercooked steam slop. You and I know what I mean. No menus, options, probably incomprehensible gameplay. Barely even a game. Junk.

2) Lack of appeal
Might have an interesting mechanic, and be recognizable as a game, but is just boring. Think all the hollow knight clones that just look like slop.

3) No marketing
Just rolling the dice rarely works. You need to do at least a bit of reddit posting, twitter spam, or streamer payoffs to get eyes and attention on your game.

4) Nothing unique
You could do everything right, but if another game delivers better then you, you're just eating their scraps. This varies, but you need at least some hook that hasn't been done before.

They seem to struggle with open world games. But they've been finding their place finally. They seem good at exploration, combat, and complexity. They struggle with open world story and questing. So during Skyrims era they really couldn't compete. But now they are making fun games like Elden Ring and I guess Monster Hunter games. Pokemon is finally becoming open world. The last one was ugly as shit, but wasn't a horrible kids game.

And they also don't seem to get shooters, although they built the pre-cursor to Helldivers II like a decade in advance. They just didn't know what they had.

Pre 2000 everyone played japanese games. Zelda, Final Fantasy, Mario etc. After FF10 I can't remember any average person giving a shit about Japanese games. I think I've got the main gameplay elements done, so I'm going to move on to fleshing out the environment. But instead of placing sprites one at a time I'm trying to make life easier with little @tool scripts. This one builds different styles of fence and automatically re-bakes the navmesh.

From those, kernel developers build the drivers, which are then used by the OS to provide the higher level libraries.

I suppose the gpus in modern computers have hardcoded fuctions for like draw_pixel(x, y).

I am starting to think that when you remove all wasting time mechanics in videogames, most games only last 10 minutes.

The only real diference with AAA is that for every mechanic, there's 5-6 that are made to increase the time it takes to be finished, or add padding content for not other reason to increase play time.

This is the correct and most time-efficient methodology for these types of models.
A few tips:
-models can be unwrapped forwards OR backwards. Meaning you can UV onto a blank then make your texture, or create a texture map and unwrap onto that.
-photobashing was the rule of the day for everyone in the industry excluding some VERY high paid artists at Square
-As stated, rough everything in at 2-4x your intended resolution, then scale it down with unfiltered scaling. Gets you the look you posted. Textures at that time were usually 128x OR 256x for really high detail stuff.
-You can fuck up EVEN more if you know that your in-engine stuff is going to have a PP that filters or blends pixels. Much more forgiving.
-Depending on your art style, DON'T skimp on the saturation. That generation was made to be played on shitty CRTs the size of a postage stamp. That means they cranked up the contrast and saturation to get the intended feeling.

Hope that helps. Low poly modeling is not for the faint of heart. It's the most difficult possible blend of 3D modeling skills and 2D art skills. Anyone recommending to people that are new to either is doing them a disservice.

Other stuff that is engine dependent:
-Best PBR setup for pixel mats is attached. YMMV, but you can add normal maps for fancy lighting, else a 1 in Z for flat reflection. AO at 0, it defaults to 1.
-DONT FORGET ALBEDO / SPECULAR. If you forget to set this to 0 from 1, it will make the texture you worked your ass off on look like washed out shit.
-Lighting your scene is even more important than having really good models and materials. Pre-baked was used back in the day, but dynamic is cooler and better.

It's kinda sad what I'm about to say but plenty of people from 2000 or in the 90's didn't know either. I'm on my PS2 classics marathon and from the games I've played, many classics and games that people praise have design flaws.
For example Blood Omen 2 had atrocious level design. You had platforms that existed for sole purpose of you being able to jump somewhere. You had puzzles that had no reason to even exist, but were placed in a spot for you to think about them for a second, like having one switch that opens a door one level above, just so you could turn valve that opens door one floor lower. Why make it two switches on two floors? They could use one switch that opens the important door. Ghosthunter is another example, one level has you running through a sunken ship and plenty of rooms in the engine room have no purpose. Just empty walls, no assets, but copy-pasted stairwells on one side of the ship to another so you're like a mouse in a labyrinth. In Forbidden Siren most puzzles are about finding a key. There's like 20 different keys in a game that open different doors, locks, chains, some of which can be found only by replaying stages, some of them only by commanding your escort to hide in a specific place.
Speaking of which, why most metroidvanias have completely pointless rooms, whole corridors of nothing but cannon fodder to kill? It's one thing when you're backtracking to access previously locked area, but usually you're doing a sewwing machine backtracking, back and forth, going through the same enemies and even unlocking shortcuts or quick travel points aren't helping much. Plenty of times I was just looking at a map to choose the shortest route so I can play the game less. I'd say in FIST I was looking at map like 30% of total playtime.
In conclusion, games fucking suck. At the end of the day 2D is about going left to right just to go up and then go right to left, and with 3D you're just doing staircases with corridors between them.

It's not really that hard. I delayed and delayed for a long time because I hate doing UI shit but starting with the basics that GameFreak did (FIGHT, ITEM, POKEMON, RUN, but renamed obviously) and start building out from there, it's not too difficult. I just have a love/hate relationship with coding.
So it gets frustrating when, for example, I finally figure where in my code I was accidentally stopping the player from being able to Z-lock onto a second monster after defeating a first one, I then try to throw a ball at the second monster and now a second battle doesn't trigger. So I have to also go searching for what's causing that bug.
Once I get through all this and have the battle mechanics to a satisfactory level then it will be on to some really fun, more modular coding shit. Like where and how different types will spawn, adding some basic survival mechanics like hunger, thirst, fatigue so players finally get that feeling of going out into the wild to battle and catch monsters. The thought of doing stuff like that, and even adding a train as a form of fast travel, is helping to keep me motivated.
My plan is, when I get a bit fatigued from this big project, to go back and finish off one of my smaller demos/prototypes that aren't meant to be full games.

Thanks!! to put the number into perspective, Dungeon Watchers only got 495 whilst after 5 months, and at launch it had 559, Guns and Nuns steam page have less than 2 months and already have 1776, it keep going up and the people are openly showing more interest about it. I had plans on participating in this October Steam fest, but... I decided it will be better to try gain wishlist and be part of February's steam fest next year. I am working on launching a demo some time after this October's steam fest finish. The part that makes more happy, is that some tiktok users found the prototype on Newgrounds which doesn't have gravity mechanics, one enemy type and only the gold desert eagles, and they like it a lot and say they can't wait to play the new demo.

Now I am finishing the result screen, replacing the old effects with new ones using the VFX graph in Unity, adding simple gore system and a leaderboard.

I have submitted 2 demos here before, that was just a good few years ago now. I got surprisingly positive feedback despite them being babby's first demos. People like the enemy models in The Ballad of Deadeye Chambers but holy shit was the player controller bad lol. And people said my short horror experience The Gloomtide Charter had a whole bunch of issues but that it was pretty good for a first attempt.
Don't download either of them please, because I think the last updates back then were completely broken (again, didn't know what I was doing) so you can't even finish the demo levels now lol.
Since then I've been doing a CS degree which did help with programming but I'd been too busy to be a yesdev. Now I'm throwing myself back into it and WILL be producing at least a prototype just to see if you guys like it. But even as a pared back indie project, it will be quite ambitious for one person. So interest would have to be quite intense for me to commit to it.

The tutorials in Galduen of the Void need improvement. The red highlights should be flashing red and white because they're too passive as they are. Also, you should not be able to touch any other buttons other than the highlighted in the tutorials, I got them messed up at least twice. The biggest problem for me however is that I don't know how to progress at all when entering the main game even after seeing all the tutorials. This screen, as I posted here, doesn't appear on any tutorial for instance. I really don't know what to do to get a single rocket off the ground.

Other than that, I thought the character dialogue was charming, and the game is very pretty to look at and soothing, too bad I don't know how to play it.

See, I'm trying to design everything around a singular attack button. And in the case of good hack n slashes, there is an attack for sending enemies skywards, but I'm not sure how to really incorporate it.

I stopped using Unity a year ago because the AI integration was in terrible shape. That is unironically how it works for most indie games. The vast majority of successful indie games had zero marketing and were successful entirely by word of mouth. Marketing as a whole is completely redundant if your game is good because the fans are already spreading word of it, or completely useless if your game is bad because people who play it warn everyone not to fall for the marketing.

If your game fails, it's not because you didn't market it, it's because you made a bad game. No good game has ever failed to be noticed due to a lack of marketing.

What AAA does is not really "marketing." What they do is spend so much money on publicity as to create an atmosphere of "everyone's buying this so you should too" to get conformists to buy without regard to the quality of the product. And sometimes they don't even succeed at that if the product is just that bad enough.

You as an indie do not have the resources to be going for conformist baiting and should not confuse it with marketing. As an indie your "marketing" is making a product so good that customers rave about it and tell all their friends to buy it. As an indie the ONLY that matters is the quality of your product.

I am speaking exactly from personal experience of shipping a bad game. Marketing was completely useless because the game itself was bad. The only thing that could have saved it was if the game had been good instead.
