Maria being terminally ill was a unique aspect of her that made her more than just a generic happy girl who had lived a happy life on Earth and died painlessly. Shadow being created for Maria's illness made it so that she wasn't just his best and only friend, but his entire reason for existing, and with her death he failed the one reason he was ever alive to begin with. Maria having the time to say last words to Shadow after he physically saw her die gives it more emotional weight, as opposed to Movie Maria who died with no final words, no goodbye, no last wishes, and with Shadow's eyes closed so he doesn't actually watch her killed. The movie did nothing better plot-wise than SA2. At least Shadow looks cute there I guess, but he looks cute in SA2 too, so it's redundant.
