I'd say put your game out there, get social accounts, stick to posting progress every once in a while. maybe it leads to a patreon if you're popular.
but it's a hard world for mmos out there if this is the game I'm thinking about. If the scope is too high then it's better to make small games rather than get burned out.

I think you'll benefit greatly from watching this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJdEqssNZ-U
and from playing super crate box(if you can manage to get it running..)
two key tips:
make the level vertical so you have more space to dodge enemies and more variety in how you can play/target
make enemies that spawn either spawn very far away from you, like at the screen edge, or give them reverse velocity while they are falling so they fall diagonally away from you, so you have more room for error. it's too easy to not notice a spawn and have them drop on you multiple times and die.
>>
>>543338983
Thanks for playing, there's a 34 px restraint for them to spawn above you, and a 250px total restriction, I'll look into pushing them a bit.

Care to explain this, "people only buy good games" retards?
>>
>>543340563
This game is very much in a gothic like spot. charming, soulful but buggy. it's your fault assuming it's a bad game just because it doesn't hold up to the standards of the industry.
>>
>>543340702
>soulful but buggy
You'd be calling it "low effort slop" or "babby's first game project" that rightfully flopped if it didn't have all these reviews.
>>
>>543340563
>Very Positive (94% of 523)
it's apparently a good game. the players are the only ones who get a vote.
>>
>>543340984
So if a game that quite literally barely functions can be considered a good game, then the "good game" label is not objective and good games can flop, then.
>>
>>543340563
Did you try reading the reviews retardo?
>>
>>543340563
when in doubt, make a systemshockie. Yes, it's so simple.
>>
>>543341234
I did. I want to explain how this game fits into your retarded world view where "only objectively good games sell", when this game is objectively not good (read the negative reviews).
>>
>>543340702
if gothic is buggy then Morrowind is barely playable in comparison
>>
>>543341169
whether a game is good or bad can't be determined unless it's played by enough players because they're the only ones who get a vote.
but good games can flop, yes. my benchmark for a good is a mainstream genre game (FPS, RPG) that has >100 reviews at least 85% positive. this doesn't mean <100 review games are bad, just that it can't be determined.

Since you're subhuman with an IQ of 50, let me explain it to you and any retards going forward.
There are subjective qualities to a game like story, design etc. which may appeal to various people and I'm not talking them down.
There are, however, objective qualities such as the game not crashing, being optimized, not being buggy as shit, these are objective qualities that can hamper even the best of experiences and this game fails at them. In any other scenario you'd retards be saying that such a game would rightly flop but Brigand Oaxaca shows that not even objective functionality has to be good for a game to be considered good, which means "only good games sell and they always sell" is a moronic statement which you all believe in.
>>

>>
>>543341818
>There are, however, objective qualities such as the game not crashing
every game crashes for someone. what's the crash-free rate for an objectively good game?

>buggy as shit
not objective. is "as shit" defined in SI?

94% positive beats your opinion. and yes, what you have is an opinion, and a wrong one at that. and I haven't even opened the game's Steam page or seen the game.
>>
>>543341473
>but good games can flop, yes. my benchmark for a good is a mainstream genre game (FPS, RPG) that has >100 reviews at least 85% positive. this doesn't mean <100 review games are bad, just that it can't be determined.

Concept of a new attack I'm gonna put into Kasha vs Kritters. I'm still undecided whether to keep it a claw swipe or do an updated broom tail animation that has this arc. I figure a broom would make more sense for a game about controlling pests, but I kinda like how this paw swipe came out.

>>
>>543343567
My point isn't about Brigand Oaxaca itself. My point is that even objective functionality of the game doesn't matter if it's shilled enough. That doesn't mean you'll be able to do that specifically, obviously, but that "good" might as well mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Any game can be "good" if you shill it the correct way.

>then the "good game" label is not objective and good games can flop, then.
nta but this conversation is retarded.

Yes 'good game' is subjective, and is not the only factor in success. Making a "good game" that only 2000 people worldwide actually want and will ever consider trying, means you'll have a very "good" but extremely niche game that has no audience. Whether your "good game" under-performs or over-performs within that niche is hard to say, because you'd have to know how big the niche is to start with.

Generally speaking though there is a loose correlation between Steam review score and revenue. The games in the red box highlighted on this graph, which are extremely highly reviewed games which earned comparatively little money, they are usually games like anime dating sims, point and click adventures, high-fidelity work/industrial vehicle sims for germans, WW2 strategy games.

I got this information from this now unlisted video, he goes over the games in the red box and tries to find some actual hidden gems, but most of the games there are not that great.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4lhQp245dw

Honorable mention to FIGHT KNIGHT - an agdg game which was shown on screen while he was saying 'games that look like shit'. Apparently since this video was made that game has now passed 1000 reviews, so this graph and the whole analysis should probably take the release date of the game into consideration, because a game that reaches 1000 reviews over 4 years isn't the same as a game that reaches 1000 reviews over 4 days.

They do. They want to play games that are similar to ones that they've already enjoyed, which is exactly the kind of game the Steam algorithm serves to them. It's also exactly the kind of video that the YouTube algorithm serves to them, and it's also exactly the kind of songs that the Spotify algorithm serves to them. Recommendation algorithms are not some big mystery. They are well understood by anyone less retarded than you.

Is anybody here able to recommend a good MIDI cable? I have an old but still very nice Roland keyboard, but when I go to use it in LMMS or FL Studio on either Windows or Linux, it doesn't behave as it should: when pressing multiple keys, one key either doesn't play (though there's visual feedback on both the DAW and the cheap MIDI cable I currently have) or it holds the key indefinitely. The DAW doesn't like when I use the sustain pedal, either; it interrupts all incoming note connections and/or spams random notes sometimes.

The game approximately grew 60% in size after its initial release, as the dev just continued to tinker on it, add more bosses, dungeon parts, weapons, balance patches, bugfixes, endings and a whole end-game dungeon with a secret ending for tryhards. I still remember reading this on the long drive home from the store. I opened the box in the car and I was reading the first pages of the manual and I was so excited. It promised so much freedom and so many possibilities.
My mom took one look at me and told my dad there was no way I'd sit through dinner and they got a pizza along the way. I was eating pizza while installing the game and I got permanent grease stains on the box, disks and manual. I think it was the first week of the winter break too so I had weeks to explore the galaxy.
That moment was as close as my life got to being perfect.

Do indie devs really make controls too slidey?(velocity smoothing) It's a pretty common complaint from gamers.
>>
>>543367510
>slidey
intangible
>>
>>543367510
It's more of a problem of the gamer not adapting to the game's controls. A dev spends a long time playing their own game to the point were the movement feels right to them.
>>
>>543367510
It's usually only a problem for 3D games that use a default engine humanoid character controllers that are more optimized for smooth animation blending. It's not really a problem with an kinematic controller.

Yes. We are in the post-shovelware era. 2017-2019 was deemed as the shovelware era where any random low-effort asset flip or /agdg/-tier high school class project could make at least a few thousand dollars simply by existing, and gamers got really tired of seeing that level of garbage. The 2019 algorithm change effectively killed off those kind of games, which really upset the low-skill low-effort shovelware producers at /agdg/.

>I think a lot of devs are learning that Steam Next can't be in the middle of game development to drum up interest.
>there are demos with unique mechanics that are overlooked or had a twist which got mildly popular and then had their thunder stolen by other devs who can iterate and toss out stuff to get a product out to market faster when it is good enough which is unfortunate. AI also even if disclosed makes it even easier.
>Devs are now rightfully prioritizing putting Steam Next as a last stop releasing a demo before releasing the game right before another Steam Next fest in the next 2-3 months to prevent people from waiting and losing interest or getting ideas stolen.
Thoughts?

It is possible that with the amount of AI devs growing there's an increasing risk of putting your game out there early be it on itch or a steam demo only to have it cloned by some dude who can work more hours than you.

I mean, there's a clear line of older gamers and younger gamers where young gamers enjoy cheap slop and older gamers played everything and anything.

You don't have to like or enjoy FF9 but being a gamedev and not playing a major RPG franchise all the way through is weird as hell.

Every game dev should be required to play all major franchises on top of specific ground breaking tech games to become devs.

>Gamers don't know what they want, ever.
That's why it is up to you as the developer to influence them when they see screenshots or video of your game. That's what it means to have a game people want to play. When they see it or sometimes even when they hear about it that makes them want to play it. This is the key. Your game needs to be enticing in some way. It needs to provide something that the gamer wants to experience.

Let's take https://store.steampowered.com/app/2062430/BALL_x_PIT/ for example
>solid aesthetic
>anyone who's played breakout can understand what's going on
>yet ball x pit is something they've never played which makes it intriguing
>trailer and screenshots make it obvious there's a variety of content
>lots of shit to unlock which is a very popular thing in games right now and can extend even a mediocre game's life quite a bit
>"I get to combine special balls for cool effects!?"
>*plays demo*
>*has fun*
>*buys game*

Devs being talentless hacks is exactly why you gotta be worried about it. If your demo goes viral in itch but you're years from release there's ample opportunity for some AI slopper to make a sloppy clone and get to market first, making your game look like the clone in the eyes of the consumer.

You don't need to play games to be a gamedev. Arguably many devs would benefit from having played less games. There's many devs who can only copy from the games they played. They can't come up with designs that weren't influenced by shit they experienced in some other game. That's a limitation that makes you a worse developer.

Quite a large chunk of successful indies are people who can think out of the box to come up with something novel and interesting enough to get people to buy it.

Lmao I'd love to see the argument for that. If devs can "only copy from the games they played" and they play less games that would just mean they copy even more or have nothing to copy and nothing to dev.

re4 remake?
>>
>>543377724
This rule only applies to the content of the game, to learn how to properly do mechanics, you need to play games. For example, the used by everyone input control scheme, you won't know that Space = Jump if you don't play games.
>>
>>543378139
When all you've experienced is a bunch of games you tend to think of game design through those games. Let's say you want to make an isometric rpg where you control one character and take down hordes of monsters. If you've played Diablo this description probably makes you think of Diablo. This is why diablolikes took over 20 years to evolve into Path of Exile 2. Every developer set out to remake Diablo 2 instead of making something original. Now if we're talking about the zoomer generation they'd probably think of Vampire Survivors with that description and they'd set out to make survivorslikes.

What if you hadn't played any isometric rpgs. What kind of game would you come up with. We don't know because basically everyone making isometric rpgs is influenced by the isometric rpgs they played.

kinda poop, it's too much 'to the beat'. The main synth line and the drum beat are unchanging and have emphasis on the exact same beats. It feels lifeless because of this.

You need to introduce some emphasis on the off-beats. Perhaps play with syncopation or adding a bit of swing.

I've been lurking these threads for a while.
What you just described literally never happens. What does happen is someone posts a game that very clearly makes a crab feel bad about themself so the crab starts attacking them with pathetic remarks like "you're not actually trying to sell this are you".

Pathetic. Like no body who is actually here and reading these exchanges sees it as anything but a crab being a crab. And I haven't seen a single "NGMI dev" throw a tantrum about their "5 second sketch" being critiqued, but what we do see constantly is full blown meltdowns from crabs.

So why are you bullshitting? Are you really so scared to face what you are?

Instead of being unhappy about the things you don't have, try to be happy and actually enjoy the things you do have, even if they're small and you wish you had more. Comparing your life to others and telling yourself that you are worthless and suck isn't good for you and will only make you sad. Ignore everyone else and just focus on yourself and what you have. I have done some prototypes. It is an area where I need to improve but I believe I can do it. Programming is much easier than art. Really the problem with a multiplayer game is that it increases the scope. I am not ready to make a 3d game with character customization. That shit is a lot of work.

True. Many weird edge-cases that I'll stumble on by accident, some only happen occasionally. The other day I had one, in my game if a player is standing on a spawnpoint then that spawnpoint becomes unavailable, just to prevent awkward physics situations. I found that if a player logs off while standing on a spawnpoint it would (sometimes) fail to re-enable, due to some race condition. So now whenever a player disconnects I have to trigger the check on every spawnpoint just in case a player was standing on them when they disconnected

I find animating with 3d models and then rendering them out as sprites is a nice compromise, because drawing the same walk animation from 8 different angles can get pretty tedious. It's probably easier to make 2d look good in a stylized way, whereas with 3d there's so much you have to do to get out of 'asset flip' valley

I thought you guys would already know this. Switch is an optimization thing. It's just a jump table. It jumps to a case using the calculated offset. It's old school because it's from C. Switch definitely can be more elegant to describe certain logic sometimes, more so than if-else. You need to break due to it being old school, in machine code when you jump somewhere that's all it does, it doesn't automatically return.

Yes the optimization doesn't matter anymore on modern machines. I find that when you want to describe the behaviour of something, like a state machine, it's more elegant than if-else. It reads like a list describing how it implements each state, in my opinion.

But then you'll be trapped within the limitations of your word processor software. What if you want to do weird custom formatting or fonts that your processor software doesn't support? What if you want to use a stable processor that doesn't crash as much as your software of choice? What if you want to connect to a printer that doesn't have a driver compatible with your word processor? It makes way more sense to write your own processor.

I've explored that option as well and it can get some nice results. But if you were to do something like Diablo 2's layered pre-rendered sprites where the equipment swaps out the visuals that would be a pain in the ass. Though it is a pain to do it in 3d as well. I don't think I'd ever go that far for my game unless I found an artist to work with but I do want some customization on the coop game I have planned. It might boil down to some color schemes and hats. That's something for the future me to figure out.

I assume you're new to graphics programming.
For now, go with whatever you can easily set up and which you can find good learning resources for. That'll probably be OpenGL. Don't worry too much about what version, just get some triangles on the screen and then incrementally look into buffers, shaders, etc.

Once you can build a "model viewer" program, you'll be in a much better place to gauge the available APIs and pick one (or more) for your engine. I'll share some thoughts about that anyway, but you shouldn't worry about this yet and you shouldn't pick which API to learn based on what I say below.

You probably don't want to write Vulkan or D3D12 directly. They're mind-numbingly verbose, it's hard to get details like synchronisation right, and only AAA games (plus certain emulators) really need the kind of control they give you. Even then, keep in mind that games like the PC port of God of War 2018 used D3D11.
What you probably want is to use an existing RHI on top of D3D12, Vulkan, and other modern backends. Some options include NVRHI and Diligent Engine.

My personal favourite of these at the moment is SDL3's recent "SDL GPU" api. Its backends are
>D3D12 (feature level 11_0, baseline API version meaning no SDK needed)
>Vulkan (1.0 with a couple extensions)
>Metal
>consoles if you have the right NDAs
It offers a roughly D3D11-ish feature set. You don't get raytracing or mesh shaders, but you do get compute shaders and pipelines. It's a more explicit API than D3D11, but much less so than something like Vulkan. Barriers are automatic. Shaders are simply your underlying backend's native shaders, albeit with a few things you need to be careful of and some requirements for how your bindings need to be laid out.

My engine uses SDLGPU for its main renderer and also has a very basic GLES2 renderer for browser support.
