Instead of accumulating a number of enemies by adding 1 every round, you could calculate it directly by writing a function that takes the round number as input and spits out the enemy count as a result
That way you could do something like make it go up by 1 every 2 rounds by doing roundNumber / 2

each cutscene node has a speed, position and a target, or it can have a "snap" instead of a speed so it just changes position instantly.
So you could have node 1 be one side of a room and the target be a characters face, then the 2nd node set to snap and be on the other side of the room and another characters face to do a point of view change for a talking style cutscene.
its kinda hard to explain but I know how it works lol and Im the only one who really needs to know

here is a webm of example of the cutscene changing the cameras target to change from looking at the pigeonman to the chickenman

I imported my model into Godot, exported as a glb from blender, and the UVs are completely busted.
The issue is definitely with the UV map, because when I export the model separately and apply the texture later it still maps in the exact same wrong way.

with AI + asset stores + engines making it so easy to make games now, the main filter for making money is having an idea that people care about
even advertising is easy, just make videos, upload them to social media, and pay for botted views/likes
genuinely, the hardest part is having an idea that people will look at and say "i want to play this game"
i could be projecting, but i think the average dev is too autistic to understand why anybody would enjoy something they don't personally have interest in, making the process of coming up with appealing ideas even more difficult

it's so weird to me how gamedev youtube is like this place where it's cool to suck and fail.
like, imagine a dating coach be like "i never had sex and fail with women, but here is what i've learned to help you dating women"
it's so fucking stupid.
yeah i get the logic that "someone who tried and failed has some experience". but would you rather listen to a vid "i own a successful restaurant, here is my strategy" or "i failed with 10 restaurants, here is my strategy"?

this whole "what not to do" teaching is just fucking stupid. like i could also say "if you wanna win at gamedev, then dont cut out your eyeballs and don't shoot a cop". like wtf that type of teaching is fucking useless.
>>
>>544391205
You should only listen to non-Nepo babies that either have multiple successful games or one after multiple failures; anything else is a waste. Also said successful games need to be from the past ~3 years, or it might as well be useless as well.
>>
>>544391205
they're humble
game dev makes you humble
>>
>>544390357
the title from the third one is good and the art is overall nice but the second title has more honesty

honesty is important, because if someone would buy #3 and clicks on the game, they might not buy it if the game doesn't look like #3
the number of players who are willing to buy the game will always be greater on #2 than #3 (assuming #2 is more like the game)
it's a shame because #3 is quite pretty
>>
>>544391420
To be honest, for me "success" isn't even the most important thing. The real big thing to me is, that those people don't even finish games. Or their games just suck.
You can finish a game, with somewhat good game design, and still not be successful. But you finished something and made some good choices about game design. That is already success to me. But they can't even achieve that and they also cannot teach that.
We don't even have a good strategy to even just finish games yet. And more important, finish in a good timeframe. It's a skill in itself to scope correctly, have focused game design and finishing in a good timeframe that doesn't take endless years.

99%+ of indie solodevs have no idea about their limitations, what is realistic to achieve, what it costs (in dollars) to actually make what they have in mind, how long it takes, how it will ruin their health by overworking, if it'll even be fun or just torture to make the game they want.
tldr: they are completely out of touch with reality and they don't seem to have any intend of re-aligning with reality.
there's a reason why literally every indie dev is complaining about how hard it is.
they don't want to think or listen, they just want to do it, and then when reality hits they cry and complain.

truth
it's a desperate attempt at feeling joy by creating art
that's it
they don't care about making games people want to play, they barely even care about making games
they're just depressed artists looking for an outlet to escape into
escapism
this reminds me of how much i love the escapism RPGs provide

>>
>>544392507
they'd have a WAY better time just playing video games. i think gamedev is just an outlet where you can "feel like doing something productive". just like playing mmorpgs and feeling like you earn coins and it's "productive".
what you really need to do is to just chill, have less fear, and just enjoy your time. and when you do gamedev do it realistically and don't have any hopes in it.
when you have no realistic perspective left for your future, then delusions develop like crazy, because hope becomes like a drug and you'll have all sorts of unrealistic ideas just to feel hope again.
the reality is that you can survive without hope. you can just accept life as it is. and then you can actually start to realistically approach stuff like gamedev.
>>
Japanese niggas figured it out by making their RPGs power fantasy grindslop. It feels good to perform repetitive tasks and increase your power level. There's something appealing about this on a deeply instinctual level.
>>
>>544392981
But why doesn't it work irl? I will spend hours making my character learn some skill and feel good, but not irl.
>>
>>544391205
Gamedev is secondary for the producer and consumer of this content. Anyone who really believes watching
>Top TEN tips you NEED to know before STARTING your own hobby (Almost died!!)
is anything but procrastination is genuinely too stupid, apathetic, or weak willed to make a videogame.
This truth doubles if you are getting this advice from bare minimum griftdevs like bite me games who go from starting their channel as absolute no knowledge beginners to putting out sage wisdom within one year after a few prototype games flopped on steam.
This truth triples when you are watching multiple videos on what an amateur must know before they start, without starting.
Gamedev YouTube has nothing to do with developing videogames.
>>
>>544392981
"slop" to me isn't when the dev is just giving me what i enjoy, it's when intellectual tryhards try to sell me their intellectual ideological version of what entertainment should be like. like woke crap.
really weird that you call it slop.
>>
>>544392981
It's a shame because JRPGs have really big potential for being as deep and strategic as other types of RPGs but they don't care they just make it about leveling up and getting better gear and that's it.
I know this isn't /v/ but can someone show me a JRPG that is actually deep and strategic and has intense strategic battles and isn't based around levels and equipment for the most part.

i wish i could ban every video from my youtube feed that mentions money. i'm just so tired of it. it turns everything into a personal drama.
i swear some day in the middle of a movie they'll add the producers talking about their financial struggle making the movie.
i'm so tired about hearing about people's financial failures and troubles.
it's probably the most annoying trope of the current age.
>>

>>
I hate humans so much. I feel like despite never having it I don't even want love anymore because I know I'll only be hurt and betrayed again if I try, just like every other time.
>>
>>544393102
I believe the rewards IRL feel much less meaningful than the rewards you get from grinding in games. In a game, you'll spend a few hours performing a relatively easy task to increase your strength and go from fighting low level slimes to fighting dragons. In real life, you'll spend 10 years breaking your back at the Amazon warehouse to increase your salary by $15,000. It's not nearly as rewarding.

>>544393230
I call everything slop. I don't think slop is bad. I enjoy slop. I play mobile games. I play League of Legends. I don't perceive the term slop in a negative manner. The nature of slop, however, being low effort to produce, can be easily applied to most JRPG series. Take the previously built mechanics, make some new assets, come up with some bullshit story, and sell the game. I would consider that design approach slop-like. There's minimal cognitive effort involved in producing it.

>>544393435
Japs save their "deep and strategic" cognition for real work. Video games are for relaxing. They're allowed to be simple.

IdeaCHADs how would you handle limb specific damage in "bump" combat?
Targeting a limb prior to every attack is pretty slow, clunky and tedious.
I thought the attack type and terrain could influence weights on which limbs are likely to be hit, example slashing attacks in a narrow corridor are more likely to hit arms and legs but in the open they have a better chance to decapitate or eviscerate.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

ai unironically makes programming more difficult since you can do more work per session and end up needing to mentally account for way more information
i used to spend 8+ hours solving a handful of bugs
now i can build entire systems in less than 30 minutes and then spend the 3 hours bug testing their edge cases
the latter involves so much more thinking, so much more information to account for, the fatigue is unimaginable
it's like the information density is so much higher, the workflows with AI compared to workflows without it can be compared to sprinting uphill vs lightly jogging

3.4 million new products are listed on Amazon each day.
24 million in the week

And you’re not only competing with those new listings — but with the entire 600 million-product catalog already live on Amazon. :)

Take all the “Amazon seller success stories” you’ve heard in the past 10 years and divide that by the number of sellers who’ve tried (again, millions of new listings a month), and there’s your historical likelihood of “making it.”

Amazon fees, ad costs, returns, storage, FBA cuts, self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement…

Even if you hit this “mediocrity lottery,” amazon basics is gonna be your competence.

Imagine thinks that Amazon selling can provide a sustainable primary income in 2025.

Based yesdev, I've been studying and practicing some esoteric arts such as hypnosis & a few pioneering neuroscience theories for nine months now.
Making a videogame has nothing to do with art, sound, or code. It's actually about controlling the brain of another human being, remotely.
I believe that, by mapping the synapses of a human brain, we can derive the true essence of a fun game.
All of this, without a single line of code, heh. I guess you could say I'm a bit more than an amateur.
>>
>>544407542
You're too young to remember this, but Japan was on track to becoming the global predominant superpower in the 70-80s. That's why the entire "cyberpunk" aesthetic is heavily Japanese: because all the sci-fi authors of that era assumed Japan would run the world in 2077. The exact same anti-China propaganda you're pounded with on a daily basis today was targeted at Japan in the 70-80s. The only difference is that today China has its own army, while Japan didn't and was entirely beholden to US demands. Japan was forced to sign away that future. Bing "Plaza Accords" and "Japan's lost generation" for more.

You're literally wasting your time studying psychology. Gamedev is time consuming, you can't putter in subjective nonsense you need hard results, that's why I study the brain directly.
You're literally thinking you should study the motion of a vehicle while you could be studying the engine.
You quite simply cannot understand psychology without understanding the brain, so save yourself the time and go to the source. At a molecular level it's simple enough, I've been mapping the brain for some time now and I'm getting closer to areas that handle stimulation etc.
Or, you could skip fundamentals and jump into developing an "engine" and make a triangle spin kek. It's time to dev like a big boy, son, I recommend you start with Why We Sleep, Incognito etc basic accessible concepts before you can enter peer reviewed materials.

Irrelevant? From a psych faggot who thinks it will help with MARKETING of all things? Tell me you know NOTHING about gamedev, retard.
Games don't stimulate your personality gayboy, they target the brain. It's ridiculous to reduce a videogame to inputs on a computer resulting in stimulation, like market fags think, when in reality it should be reduced to chemical reactions taking place on a microscopic scale.
>Hurr durr, plank length
I bet you think this is intelligent showing off your grand science knowledge. The brain works in concert with the surrounding universe, grand astrological movements are just as important to gamedev as brain chemistry and don't think I ever forget it. After I've finished my full brain map I won't be releasing so much as a teaser prior to Jupiter's retrograde.
I understand there are hobbyists here but you have to be joking if you think psychology is a legitimate vector of study for commercial success.

i wonder. do people really care about the games they play or is it just the achievement they want? like e.g. in a gacha game, do they really enjoy the gameplay and the story or do they just want the better gear and the rare characters?
if that would be actually true, then for a game to be addictive, all it needs to do is give a context for a sense of achievement and nothing more.
i guess that's why competitive games work so well. do people really care about kicking a ball? no. but do they care about the sense of achievement? yes they do.
they'll do basically any activity, as long as it is able to create a sense of achievement. and if you mix that with loot boxes and gacha you got a money magnet.

Isn't that why you ideally do a polished vertical slice of your supposed game idea? That way, you could more easily gauge from there how long it'd take to do the rest of it from there after implementing some of the systems necessary for the core gameplay, along with a subset of assets made.

i'm currently trying to fix this bipolar mindset. like "either wageslave or selfmade dev". what i try to do is not having any fear about a normal job anymore. like just accepting "there's some shit i have to do and i'll do the bare minimum to support my stoic lifestyle". and then i try to not think about money at all anymore for everything else. like money doesn't exist and has no value or any meaning in my life.
it's very hard to do because my brain is rotten with the money virus, but i try to heal.
do both. do what you are forced to do by the circumstances and on top of that do what you really want to do. and if you don't feel like deving anymore, then you can at least know for sure you only did it for money and not because you really care. which is also fine because your well being is important, not the product you make.

i wonder if it's a nice constraint to do a ui only game. like, no access to realtime-rendering. everything event-based. like pressing a button to "progress by 1 hour".
my problem with this is though, that literally all ui technology except html/css/js sucks. but i don't want to write a game in javascript.

Good = high skill, quality, fidelity, effort, production value, etc.
Fun = flow = nice gradual difficulty/learning curve with minimal friction and very few drop off points
that people want to play = do your market research and find areas of high demand and low supply

studying game design is making me realize how absurd my personal preference in gaming really is
i look at successful games and think
why the fuck do people like that

for example
i hate slay the spire but love overwatch
this can't be normal?

As much as I hate gatcha games, I like them because they tend to devolve to minmax hell, and for whatever fucking reason, my brain really likes making a unity as powerful as it'll allow me. Regular games tend to not have layered growth systems because they're not live service garbage that has to add a perpetual grind of micro-economies to keep player retention/add harder content.

As an indie game developer, you don't have the means to show people something they don't already want. That's a privilege reserved for those with multimilliondollar marketing budgets.
>>
>>544417787
it's 100% the achievement that drives motivation, mechanical gameplay gets subconsciously automated very quickly
what people desire is the fulfillment of a desire that's implanted in their imagination
tell the player what to do and they'll want to do it if it's not excessively difficult
what makes a game fun is the anticipation of accomplishing the goal, not the actual interactivity
this is my biggest struggle as a developer, thinking of a scenario, of a goal, that has high appeal and will convert to sales if implemented and advertised correctly
all i can think of is power fantasy "become the strongest" slop, but idk how well that sells with the indie gaming audience
it seems the people who enjoy the concept of intrinsic self improvement are already occupied with pvp games
i'll at least make a couple games around this concept to see how it goes, but if this goal context fails, i might resort to making casual money fantasy games where you get rich with minimal effort, or social validation games where a community of npcs supports you and treats you nice because you helped them or something, idk yet
ahh man this shit not easy
>>
>>544419480

they cant do it either because it functionally impossible to run it as a test case
you might think "oh i'll make a visual prototype and see what kinda response it gets on xiter" but no natter what response that gets its not actually a testcase of the game you think it will be, it is instead its own art product whose results apply to itself.

it's kinda weird. you need to have a game where improving is some sort of mystery, like "i don't know what type of weapon i will find". but at the same time they have to know the weapon exist or they don't even know they can actually progress. or you communicate that with levels. like "oh ok the max lvl is 70, my sword is level 40, so there has to be a level 50-60-70 weapon too"

and once players know there is upgrades, they feel a sense of achievement for getting the upgrade.

i personally don't believe laziness exists in stuff like hobbies or work. maybe in a sense that if other carry you, you get lazy because you don't have to do it. and you don't do it because someone else already does it for you and you just start to depend on them.
but for solodevs it doesn't really exist i think.
i think the real problem is lack of faith. it's hard to do something when you always have a voice in you telling you "it's not gonna be worth it", "you not gonna finish this", "even if you finish it wont make money".
and if it feels like a gamble. would you work hard for a full month just for a lottery ticket that could give you 0 dollars in profits? no you wouldn't.

there is only 1 other mindset that makes you able to get out of laziness and that is "wasting time". you have to be able to waste time. you have to be completely comfortable with your time being wasted. it's non-productive thinking. it's a mindset where it doesn't matter what the outcome is. but that is extremely hard to do. it's just not how we are wired.

i also noticed that especially when you are depressed it's hard to waste time. actually i once figured out that wasting time cures depression, cause it strikes right into the "everything has to have meaning" fallacy.

There is no architecture for raylib. It's basically an opengl wrapper and then a library of helpful functions for gamedev.

What design issues do you have with it? What interfaces are you worried would have to be rewritten?

As long as you have enough money to not have to worry about having food on the table and having a roof above you and walls around you for the foreseeable future, as well as extra wiggle room to buy what you want to buy, and you're not getting that money from actively screwing over other people, then you're living the ideal life. You can pursue an activity that is more meaningful to you than something you pursued purely so you can make money to not have to worry about living.

Is there some shorthand trick for making sure my UI is readable from a couch distance's away if I were to make an eventual console version (let a man dream)? Most I can think of is just temporarily making my game render at a shit resolution (720x480), and see if it's still legible there, give or take some blurring due to the shit resolution vs. the assets I'm using.

It is sort of winning the lottery but these countries peaked in late last century or maybe up til around 2010. After that things have gotten worse, way worse. Of course things have been getting worse globally so living here is still better than the rest of the world but Sweden has it especially bad with all the mud people they imported. Their direction is literally a failed state if they don't start taking some drastic actions to course correct and if they do they will get huge global backlash because they will be committing "crimes" in order to protect their nation.

For hp i got a 3 terms, grade 16 polynomial lol. But i think i'll rewrite it from zero with a less exponential scaling (like, 1 million ho reached at t10 or sonething like that).

If you want to replicate it perfectly, i believe the dev is using variable percentage increments. Think of it like:

Hp *=1.01
If wave % 2 = 0 Hp *=1.1
If wave % 10 = 0 Hp *= 1.5
Etc

But be aware there's like one hundred of these conditions. I know this by searching their discord

It does matter actually. You represent the lopsided amount of shitters who mill around these threads when you're not even a gamedev. UK is a blight.

>what can we learn from this?
don't make bad games, and also don't be a tranny

>>544441873
>You represent
I'm not from the UK nor am I a nodev

the true blight is those 3 groups of people and they have much overlap
>>
>>544434448
did the publisher contact you intially or how did that come about?
>>
>>544442028
I haven't seen any pedoposting.
Posting an animal doesn't make someone a furry, so I haven't seen any furries.
And calling animeposters troons is a stretch, but there are definitely no troons posting here.

All shitposter cope from euros like gorespammer.

How much would you say the publisher increased your earnings?
>>

I have his pic saved but I know I'll catch a ban if I post it because it's considered doxxing

I'm gonna be real with you, you can spend as much as you want in marketing, but if anyone sees that UI they will NOT go for it.

The covers there look really cool? Are those handmade?

Agreeing with the other anon saying the more standard UI elements could use an artist pass to be more stylish though. Or plug them into an AI and tell it to make them stylish and see what you get.

That's neat, I like the pixely look to things.

What's the gameplay, some kind of central tower defense?
