I wanted to warn about a scam going on the v3expo discord some moderator is pming users and offering to give away 1 year of claude code and comet browser to make gamedev easier. They then give you invite link to comet browser which gets them 3 dollars and then they tell you to login with your gmail account, they tell you to login on mobile first to sync your mobile data like gmail, contacts, etc to it. Then this google account will be connected across multiple devices and they will steal your your data.
I tried telling the owner of the discord but he blocked my private messages.

You don't need a tablet for most texturing. I only use tablet to draw curves. The rest I paint with mouse. It's faster and more precise. Tablet is just good at long strokes that vary.

There's a window of opportunity where companies are willing to hire anyone under 26 (assuming they got the good goy diploma) on the assumption that they can train them to be a good fit for the company. Only a nodev would say this. The people getting into gamedev exclusively for money/fame are only a small portion of indie devs. The majority are indeed enthusiasts who genuinely want to make games. But at some point, you have to go up a notch with your games' depth, complexity and fidelity as you get more proficient. And this increased complexity and depth requires more effort, so it's only natural to want more recognition for more effort put in, let alone money. Given that the modern indie market doesn't give you either, unless you quite literally invest an entire monthly salary into marketing just to get noticed (note that I said noticed, not even succeed and make money), it's no wonder why so many people are disappointed and blame Steam, as the market is obviously rigged towards those with shitloads of money and connections, something not every indie dev will have.

I tried the demo and can't see how the rest of the game could provide me with something substantially more interesting.
When I hear Bioshock, I imagine big daddies, little sisters, adam, cool ass underwater city, the hand superpowers, great story, superb atmosphere and lore, etc.
With twisted towers, there's not really any great concepts like that, and the stuff that it does have is... welp... extremely mild and forgettable. Let's look at Necrovale and everything they did right: lots of engagement and visibility pre-release
well priced, 10-20 dollar range, 20% release discount, first 2 hours of content are fun (next two hours are meh), professional capsule and video and demo (clicks on game page), 500+ positive reviews makes sense. It hit below the cult classic range, but is still a minor success. Though as a game it genuinely lacked enough appeal to really be better. IMO a lower price and more sales would be better because then it would look more attractive in a bundle. It could have then hit probably 1k+ sales in impulse buys. It is more money made, but it's probably not as safe. Plus you can still stack discounts with bundles, but the review velocity is very small by now, you'll only be picking up from theoretical wishlist conversions, but the thing about a bundle you'd be increasing that space.

I like the time wheel in the corner, That's a nice and creative way to convey the time. The flame and light flickering is also a very nice touch, that makes the scene feel much more alive. The light looks good when it's over objects too, like the windows and the tires.

The light is a really solid circle though. Is that deliberate? It feels like a very retro pixel thing, but the other artwork seems higher quality than that. Maybe you could soften the edges a lot so it's more like it fades away rather than just sharply ending?

Thanks, the earliest playtesters got confused by the darkening screen, thinking often that it was a bug. Though I have to admit, I stole the idea of the time wheel from Aculto, another project from here.

For now it is a solid circle yeah, I am trying to figure out the right blend mode to work with the transparency to get softer edges as you said, and I plan each light source object to have their own light sprite to get different shapes.

I don't know much about retro, the higher-quality sprites you see are from an itch.io asset pack made by LimeZu. I've been using them to prototype since the early days, since it has quite a lot of things, and there are not that many pixel art modern interior/exterior assets to go around. I did contact an artist though and have some custom assets coming so it should all be coming together.

The graphics are simple but it's good that you're keeping each icon distinct. Is there any way to tell what something is after you've placed it though?

Also, good thinking with the pop up and fade away text. That's usually much better flowing for gameplay then making the player input to progress the text. It seems like there's a contract target though? I only saw that in the popup, if there's a goal for the player to meet having it displayed or a way to access it seems like a good idea.

The stock market simulation is cool. That makes selling gameplay much more engaging then everything having a fixed price. Good work there!

It depends a lot on what you're using.
For uniquely textured models like props/characters, you usually export your UVs to photoshop and paint directly on them (old way) or use substance painter/mari/whatever to paint directly on the model (modern way).

For environments you create tiling textures and trimsheets and you basically apply them to your polygroups and fuck around with the UVs until they look good. Often you'll blend multiple textures together (in your game engine) using a mask texture or vertex colors. Environments are usually too large to have unique textures dedicated to every square meter. (though you might be able to get away with it if your environments are tiny)

What's the point of doing it for nothing? This is way too high effort to just do for free. Game dev is more fun than other ways I would spend my free time (jerking off, playing 20 year old multiplayer games, drooling on myself while watching youtube slop) so I do it. Those pay nothing and probably actively harm me, while gamedev may potentially pay something and certainly is more personally beneficial than the other uses of time available to me. Even if I end up with a 100% flop, I still am spending my time better.
