I had a weird dream about a new game that released. It was the big multiverse nostalgia game where a Sonic with amnesia had to travel to multiple universes to stop them from being destroyed by a mysterious powerful entity. The universes would’ve be a combination of original ones and based on EU stuff like the Archie/ IDW comics and the movies. It was supposed to be the big “reboot” game that fused everything into one singular universe. The game ended up being shit gameplay wise but had an amazing story.

If anything it's weird that it took almost twenty years for Sega to actually create a rule that Sonic's personality can't deviate much from the games. It seems to correlate with how important the project is to Sega. They allowed Archie to do whatever it wanted until there were consequences. They allowed Movie Sonic to have a whole new personality when the movie was a cashgrab, but now that it's the main funding of the franchise Shadow is forced to have almost the exact same personality he had from the games. When a purist angrily rejects all western Sonic versions as "Not Sonic" and makes vapid comparisons to DBE, they are being dicks but the similarity isn't hard to spot.

You know... I think the problem with Sonic games is that there are no slice of life stories. The games play out like movies. People get mad at IDW for breaking character but for the most part we only ever see Shadow and Silver when the apocalypse is happening. To a normal person it makes sense that their personalities change when the stakes are lower. But Shadow and Silver only appear in high stakes games. There is no Sonic game that has a postgame that shows you what these characters do when there are no adventures. The best we have to go off of is IDW and Sonic X and obviously those can't be used as examples. Dragon Ball doesn't have this problem. Filler is good.

His perspective seems to be that overall, Tails suffering from depression after failing to save Sonic from Infinite, latching onto Classic Sonic out of delusion, mentally recovering from realizing Sonic IS alive, and then becoming the one leading Classic Sonic who is HIS sidekick, to then acting like a big brother encouraging the Avatar in the end, is good character development for Tails. In theory, I can understand where he's coming from. I do acknowledge that shades of that are indeed visible in the game's narrative with how Tails is used overall. To a degree, at least. But, the main problem is ultimately stemming from the fact that Tails is rendered completely unplayable and never gets to do anything action-oriented onscreen. His introduction in the game is cowering against the low-tier badniks BEFORE Sonic was defeated by Infinite. Seeing Tails cower in fear to Chaos 0 only amplified the image of Tails that the Meta era cultivated in this sense. What makes Sonic Forces the absolute lowest for Tails is that the entire meta era prevented Tails from being who he was in the Classic to Adventure era, in favor of hyperfocusing on his intellect. Tails cowers against the badniks and NEVER steps in to help Sonic fight Infinite. He only scans him on his Miles Electric, and this is -presented- as helping, but this isn't how TAILS helps Sonic. Tails is Sonic's SIDEKICK, not his mission control. Chaos 0 only doubles down on this, that's why it has such a big reaction. In theory, this should feel like Gurren Lagann after Kamina's death and Simon was in his own depressive slump. But that doesn't hit, because Sonic Forces never presents Tails at his highest to contrast that. Tails with Classic Sonic -should- be like Tails is the one leading Sonic now, but we don't get to SEE this.

>>550436807Thank you for actually watching the video. I think it's a very good video that raises valid points, and I only have two issues with it. One is what you just said, he doesn't talk about the story as it is presented, but his idealized version where the execution is perfectly realized. I'm not 100% sure if that was the intention, but I think he made a convincing case, and it is believable. The other problem I have with it is that he tries to work it into the other English language versions of the meta era games, which I think is just nonsense. Forces wasn't actually written by Pontac and Graff, so I don't think this "arrogant" character development was planned at all. Regardless, I think the video is good overall. People always want to be negative and disregard the entire thing just because it doesn't match 1:1 with their expectations, and I think that's harmful overall. Since I've realized this and I played the game, I've accepted that there are some things I enjoy in this game and its story, even when it comes to Tails, but it's impossible to say that because you get accused of "ruining Tails" (or the series as a whole) if you have any sort of depth in how you look at the games.
Shant be watching videos made by someone who thinks that people should genuinely be dead for having different opinions/tastes, don't care what points he's trying to make
