Sonic "not having a backstory or substance" is only a problem because his REAL backstory is constantly overlooked and forgotten. If the pilot lore was fully retained and maintained as the origin of his character, then the very foundation of the franchise would be a lot more solid. But without it, "Sonic the Hedgehog" as a character has absolutely no real foundation. What I mean is, Sonic 1 is not a foundation. But Sonic doesn't have that. What he had originally was largely forgotten or kept under wraps so tightly that the vast majority doesn't even know it, and it was never replaced with anything substantial either. The real reason many people could be attached to SatAM or Archie or Underground or even the 1992 Shogakukan manga is because they're the closest things any of us have to "Sonic's origin". At the end of the day, we NEED Sonic's origin. At least the idea of it, properly conveyed on screen for us to actually see and resonate with. The actual root of Sonic's own existence needs to be properly established to the audience in-game. If he's meant to be mysterious and enigmatic, then actually convey that!
