The funny thing most fans don't realize is that there wasn't a "no romance mandate". Sonic specifically was not aloud to be interested in dating. If Ian wanted Knuckles and Relic to have tension he was allowed to. IDW is allowed to have love interests as long as it is specified when the character is created and not just out of nowhere. This is because Sega expects the characters to be usable for self contained stories.

I was never tainted with satAM Archie whatever growing up, I was on sonic advanced and sonic X (subbed) and I liked the ova, played the old games collection and for a laugh I tried reading Archie and after reading through the entire mainline run I'm genuinely shocked people defend it at all. The elemental aspect is what elevates each character into something abstract and conceptual, which is kind of integral to the franchise's very nature. Like, if you focus on Knuckles simply being strong but ignore the "mountain", you completely miss most of his character depth. Same with Tails being the sky. He wants to fly high so he can reach the highest of all the heavens. That's what he is, he's a young kid who wants to reach his full potential.
