My theory on why there's been such a huge disconnect recently is because Reb's major updates put more focus on presenting the story than Steve's did. Like think about it Second Dream, Sacrifice and War Within didn't have much in terms of cutscenes or set pieces for example so somebody rushing through the quests can easily miss themes or plot points especially if they aren't paying attention to the radio transmission which most of the story was being delivered through. So someone who isn't paying attention to the story but think they do from just surface level observations from the few cutscenes in this quest start to craft up false ideas of what the story is or was saying because they end up filling in a lot of the blanks themselves without much of a frame framework to base their headcanons off of which is why we see jarring statements like "I thought Umbra and Stalker were implied to be the same person". With Reb putting more of a focus on story presentation now we have a lot of people who didn't really pay attention and just absorbed lore or vibe from normal mission transmissions are realizing there's a lot that they got wrong or didn't properly understand
