I'm still HAVIN A BLAST because the core gameplay loop is exactly the same at low and high gear. Marathon's gameplay loop and design MEANS that it'll die a fast and painful death.

A combat focused game with incredibly build aligned design, means that pros with the skill and resources to get builds, meta progression being very powerful also means that the strong gets stronger and the weak get weaker.

Now usually, these extraction shooters have multiple approaches, you can be a hunter and make PVP your focus, or you can be a rat and loot peacefully while avoiding combat, Marathon doesn't have this, its core design is combat, loot is non-existent except in key points of the map, and these points all require either extensive combat with AI or long multi-step processes to unlock the loot, which means if you want to advance your meta-progression, you are funneled to conflict zones.
Another thing is that Marathon also doesn't really have "good loot" in a sense, it has combat stuff, and that's kind of it, there's no Dopamine release from hitting a golden, non-combat related item, the looting part of the Extraction genre in Marathon's implementation merely seems like an excuse to make players shoot it out.

This isn't a dig on Marathon's choice to focus on combat, it's just a simple fact that Marathon doesn't give an out to "casual players" or "players of lesser skill".

In short, low loot, focused and funneled map design, resource heavy build centric combat design, meta progression, all of these combined means that Marathon will die the same death as Mordhau and Chivalry, and all similar fighting games.
It's going to be a bunch of "pros" going "just get gud" and then the game dies.

Ugh, I had to put my two cents in. As someone who's been playing Destiny since alpha, it just hurts to see.

The worst part is when you care, but you can't do anything. It's really painful to see where D2 is at right now. If someone had told me years ago that D2 would struggle to hit 10k players on Steam, I wouldn't have been able to believe it, but hey, that's the reality now.

I'm still curious when we'll hear more about the infamous roadmap (if we ever will). I really want to keep hoping that Bungie is cooking something great, but man, it's really tough to run on hope all these years. One step forward, five steps back, and repeat. I know they can deliver, but it really might be too late this time.

On a good note - Marathon. Amazing game, turned out to be better than I could have thought. The hate around it, is kinda forced, honestly.

another huge pinwheel solo heist! finally got a marathon key!!!!!!

funny enough i actually was 1 keycard short for getting the giga room unlocked by i found it on the ground with 3 minutes to spare!

It feels like none of the build crafting really matters due to everything killing you so quick.

I want to make a judgment call on implants, cores and mods, but again it hangs on Cryo Lab to see if it all comes together.

As it is though, any sort of build thing feels redundant because the main playstyle of the game is to play it like a SWAT team, watching corners, keeping high ground, moving together. I don’t see any of that retaining to any sort of “build” the game can get out of itself, aside from really well crafted PvE segments in Cryo where you need signal jamming or specific shields, etc.

everyone is ignoring the main, most dangerous problem I posted about last thread which is the already shrinking playerbase causing increasing numbers of people to get shoved into games with the top 1%, which increases the skill ceiling, which causes players to quite, which doom spirals until you end up with things like Destiny 2 PVP.

I have 30 hours in the game and got to level 30, and the matchmaking is exclusively starting to put me into contact with these types. It's not very fun, and it's only going to get worse unless Bungie implements some form of matchmaking other than their insane level based scheme.

Maybe I got some false positives but I do believe what you load in is also a factor only if the game has flagged you in the sort of “outlier protection” that Destiny had . Marathon peaked under 90k on Steam while Arc Raiders hit 465k, and the game is already taking heat over microtransactions and thin endgame.

I’m hearing from a source on the GDC expo floor that Bungie is scrambling right now to get things resolved, and the consensus around Marathon on the floor isn’t great.

Standing on stage to give that talk this week probably would have gone very badly.

It’s unfinished too. They told Reviewers to hold their judgement till another map is released. They didn’t even complete a whole 4 maps. 3rd Map Outpost had an exploit they didn’t know and they had to shut a portion of the map down.

It’s not unfinished. It’s a live service game. People need to stop thinking that live service games get the same review guidelines as a single player campaign game. Bungie creates evolving worlds. It’s just like it wouldn’t be fair to judge a D2 expansion without the raid being out. There’s a whole ass ARG going on to unlock the endgame map.
