You can run llms off of ram purely using the cpu its just really slow. If you need like an 'oracle' machine with an extremely dense model that you only use every once in a while the cheapest way to do it is to build a server with a ton of ram.
Still though vram and ram are made using a similar process and what open AI did was book the fabs for the next few years to make HBM so they aren't producing as much ram or vram.

Being an investor or on the board of directors does not guarantee you have good business sense and there are multiple reasons why they sometimes choose to seek short term profit and run a company to the ground. It is also true that once a tech company manages to secure more revenue streams they will hire more and more finance/marketing people to optimize them and develop new ones, any department will continue to justify its own existence and be oblivious to their own bloat.

It is also easier to say that the people bringing in the dragon hoard from selling overpriced junk to businesses and governments are more important than your development teams because optimization and functioning software cannot easily be quantified into profits on a spreadsheet. Regardless it is often in the 'unseen variable' where the real value of the company lies, quiet quitting among customers is also common where you previously had brand loyalty you now have people waiting for a better alternative to come along. You can track signs of this, but it is an inconvenient truth to the CFOs out there so it usually gets translated into more and more aggressive upselling, you can usually tell how grim the situation by how aggressive their monetization strategy is towards their already existing customers.

The vector graphics idea is kind of stupid. It doesn't look good. No shading and no obstruction = impossible to communicate depth. A real daggerfall-like will always find an audience, but it's also 100x+ bigger than what you have so far, so expect to take 100 months or 8 years of constant and consistent work to get there, which is humanly impossible (you will burn out and waste years). If you really want to get into gamedev long term, go play some smaller successful indie games like incrementals and roguelikes. Find some open space in a more reasonably scoped genre, and just use a real engine.

look, you are my strongest critic and i don't know if i should hold your opinion on my game over mine but maybe i could compromise on our ideas and make a 3d roguelike in the same style as my current game. i wish i had more feedback on the style of my game than just your opinion. i personally don't find it difficult to gauge depth in my game.

i just don't think following the crowd and giving up the single unique aspect of my game would be good. i would just end up making a generic roguelike or incremental of which there are many to choose. i guess when my game bombs someday because of it's art style you can find me and say "i told you so".

The art style isn't going to kill the game, but it's also not a plus in any way. You can make a daggerfall-like in the style of old ASCII Dwarf Fortress, but people would still want to play it because it has hundreds of hours of content (and they'll even mod it for you for free to fix your shit graphics), but getting to that hundreds of hours of content takes an ungodly amount of work.

Unique doesn't mean good. Players don't want unique. They want more of what they already know they'll enjoy. Personally, I'd say the art style is too abstract. It's too hard for potential players to understand at a glance what they're looking at, and so they'll be too quick to dismiss it. If you already have tens of thousands of players playing the game, more players would be convinced to look past the abstract art style and try the game, but getting that first ten thousand is going to be nigh impossible.

I made this in Godot. It's a single room "spaceship" because I don't know what I want it to look like.But you can move around and also fly the ship. The "viewscreen" is from a camera on the ship's exterior, so I can have different cameras etc.
At the moment, I just have a sun, stars, a planet, and a ball wiggling around for testing purposes.

Can anyone suggest something to do with this? Originally I was setting out to do a single player space trading game, but there's tonnes of those and it feels boring.

I'm currently finishing the demo for an RPGMaker h-game I'm making atm. Figured I'd shill it to some of you guys here for critique once the demo drops sometime this week (I'll be posting a link to a MEGA). Demo will be free, full game I think 5$ but I'll post links here (and on F95) for free anyways cause lmao who buys RPGMaker games.
The basic overview is that it'll be a "4 niggas in a row" RPG where you can romance the 3 other party members. Decently linear story with some side content and hidden easter eggs you can find, basically a small scope, easy project for a first timer.

I don't have any vids to show, mostly cause the demo will be released very soon anyways (a few days).
It's an RPGMaker game, so naturally it's a turn based combat game. I tried my best to make the combat a bit interesting by making skills "combo based" where you usually need to prebuff with certain skills, and those states gained will unlock further effects for more powerful skills. There's an ebb and flow to the combat where the basic loop is "buff > attack > buff > attack" and if a curveball from the enemy interrupts this loop the player would have to find methods to get back into it without taking too much damage/debuffs.
This causes combat to last a while, so I decided to remove random encounters and make every combat encounter a scripted and finite one. The overall "feeling" of this makes it feel more like a TTRPG where a GM sets up specific encounters and lets you deal with them as you see fit, or even avoid them if you can. There's not EXP to grind, but enemies will drop items and usually act as path blockers, so there's still a reason to fight. However it's a good idea to explore around first before committing to an encounter.
As for story and dialogue, there's not a huge amount of different paths and things to explore, but there are some hidden things and different dialogue choices you can make to slightly alter how scenarios/acts play out. Plus, since it's an H-game focused on romance the side content with your chosen romantic interest would have influence on some of the main story beats. Like learning extra things about the quest you're currently on, or gaining a unique buff for the final fight in the game.

Don't count your chickens until they're hatched anon. I've been ghosted by 4channers I teamed up 6 months into development just fine. Making a game is a huge commitment and most people don't realize that until a couple of months. It's effectively 1-2 hours of work a day without getting paid and most don't have the grit for that long term.
Probably not a big issue if you can actually finish the game in 6 months though.

Still doing incremental prototypes to transfer my RTS fully onto Compute Shader. This is prototype #2.
Added friction so objects would actually fucking stop.
Biggest objective (99% done) was having proper rendering capabilities, with each object being able to have different mesh/material or even to have more than one visual object per entity - previous prototype had everyone use the same thing so any position automatically meant the same sprite, which simplified things tremendously. Now this part finally work, and I even added a bootleg LOD fade system that my non-compute shader game didn't have (will probably need to swap to dithered alphaclip transparency for it tho, not practical long term to have every object be technically transparent).
Collisions are still pure boid under the hood so they work but are weird, that's next on the todo list.

SDL is a multimedia library.

It can handle window creation, 2D textures blitting to the screen, multiplayer, sound, TTF fonts.

You can even combined it with OpenGL to let OpenGL handle the 3D rendering while SDL takes care of the input and window management.

But honestly, SDL is a bit old and legacy by now.

My advice is that you should use raylib now.

Use Nim with raylib if you want a similar low level experience to make a game but feels actually like using a game engine in terms of how easy is nim with raylib.

If you want to make games in C++ you essentially want one of these, SDL, SFML, Allegro, or similar. You use it to set up a window and render to it, and handle input. You really don't want to skip out on this part.

Then to render graphics you can either go with the frameworks own primitive graphics pipeline, or set up your own opengl workflow with glew. The former is very easy to get going, the latter has a longer learning curve.

Not him but I know that some of the modules are handled better with other frameworks. For example there is the SDL sound library, it is very primitive. If you need positional sound you're better off using OpenAL soft. IIRC they also have a network library, and you're better off using something else like RakNet or steamworks network sdk. These are just extra frameworks that you don't need to include, personally I use SDL2 still, for window and input handling and there are no issues whatsoever.

ask AI if you need more details about something in particular, but the TL;DR of it all is that it lets you have access to input and output of your hardware, which is what you need to make a game. But you'll need to know opengl or vulcan if you want to make your own rendering engine.
Basically it has most of the hardware access you need but it lacks everything else like the primary engines for a game like a physics engine, rendering engine, UI, input handler, ect.
I'd recommend raylib actually, it's a bit more accessible.

There's nothing wrong with using SDL for 3D, it's just a lot more work to write your game on top of your own graphics and game engine. It's a very good learning experience if you're down for it, but it's a long journey for sure.
Baldur's Gate 3 uses SDL for example, but they have of course an entire studio behind their engine.

I have an autistic system where any data that has some conditional associated with it can be assigned in the editor via drag & drop rather than hardcoding. This same systems is shared between conditions for skill activations, conditions for certain characters to show certain dialogue, whatever.
If I wanted to check compare two into I would use an intCompareCondition that compares two intProviders. So if I wanted some ability that does extra damage if you attack something that has a lower speed stat than yourself I could just assign two int Providers in the editor to that ability and set it to check that one is greater than the other.
But if I wanted a character who does extra damage to enemies of the same sex, or even if I just wanted a character who has different dialogue if they're talking to a man vs a woman, I use the exact same concept except instead of an int provider I use a sex provider that provides the sex of a given character for comparison in some conditional.

Honestly, pretty easy. There's this concept of a 'production platform' in biotech, and since in this case the output is the product of a pathway, and not a part of the pathway itself, it becomes a lot easier to purify and concentrate.

Step 0. Get DNA, there are lots of methods, for a set sequence I recommend PCR in water baths, single tube reaction, primers may be harder to get than other parts of the process. For one reaction this is theoretically quite cheap, but they mostly sell TAQ polymerase in batches of like 500 reactions because it fits in 1ml.

Step 1. Set up a helium tank and some silicone tubing like a blow gun.

Step 2. Precipitate tungsten 1 micron dust into smaller gauge silicone tubing with ethanol

Step 3. Precipitate the DNA on to the tungsten in the tube, low flow rate here is important or the tungsten gets flushed through

Step 4. Cut and load the small gauge into the larger gauge silicone tubing, about 2cm/shot, place a strong parafilm wrapping around this and cut a hole for just the output.

Step 5. Use one hand to position the output over target cells (egg cell, plant stem cell thallus, bacterial colony, tissue culture)

Step 6. Puff the helium tank to output, and close it, thus blasting the DNA-coated tungsten into the nuclei of the cells

Step 7. selective screen for transformants, agar plates, kanamycin, or a reporter gene (GFP family, or other pigments work well)

You could honestly do it easily, I recommend reading some biotech handbooks.

You can change cameras to look at all the tectonics and gemeralds, your ship occasionally gets invaded by Morlochs and mole people, you have a timer to drop off the nuke before the core destabilizes, and the plot can be the Morlochs and mole people were destroying their environment which caused the destabilization. They of course are a metaphor for how the real environmental problem is India and China, and only superior white technology can save the planet.

From what you have right now, this is a viable, one man project you could finish and release without major gameplay overhauls.

I want to try my hand it an LOD system that automatically uses POM. So instead of what I'm doing here, which is defining the trees through a shader that reads from a texture, I'll want to actually place high fidelity meshes, and have the system automatically bake a very high definition height and color map. It would then be loaded per-tile depending on how many pixels each tile is taking up on the screen (SVT).

I will want, however, to make a game out of it. I already have a texture defining the trees. So I'll either add other things that will then move perhaps through a compute shader, or I'll move the trees themselves and make them the enemy in a surrealist "can't trust nature" game.

nice, good luck. the thing I hated most about doing environment art in UE4 was the LOD system for foliage, you either generate a bajillion textures to use for billboards or use Y meshes that have shit lighting. maybe this can be solved once and for all
