Any schizos in the chat can help me decipher what the universe/God means by this?>Have no love life, basically be a bitter incel for most of my life due to shitty childhood that made me hate people and not trust anyone. Still not a complete sperg so I can hide my bitterness and not be a total reject socially and get some friends>Start at a new job>I suck at reading girls but this one girl is clearly interested in me and a few days ago she invited me to hang out just the two of us after work. First female attention in years>But this girl has the same name and the exact same fucking appearance as the girl from my childhood who cucked me with my best friend and then made every friend I knew at that time reject me.>That event basically started the whole downward spiral of my life during the following yearsIt's not the same girl because the one at work is a little older than me and the one from childhood was same age as me.I do like this girl, she's very sweet. But I'm worried the universe is trying to trick me and will repeat the exact same thing and make me lose my job or something. Am I just being retarded? If the exact same thing happens again I know I will actually go insane and either kill myself or try to kill as many people as I can Game development

Why nobody has made 3D rigs made of sprites, like 3D versions of spriter pro rigs, but where each sprite section changes based on camera angle, like doom enemies?
>>560481705Why?
>>560481843It would be faster than making an AAA 3D model.
I can't get into the zone

How many here have basically brute forced learning 3d modeling? I legit feel like I can't continue with my game because I'm not an artist at all. So instead of giving up its time for me to just slam my head at blender until I can make thicc goblin and dwarf bitches (male) for my multiplayer mining game that definitely wont have a controversial name.
>>560483751i can't fucking figure out blender. over-complicated shit. too many hotkeys
>>560483751I learned the basics 20 years ago. I'm a perpetual beginner in blender, I can't deal with all these secret hidden methods to do basic shit. if I was able to just model for a year I'm sure I'd get it down but I'm doing everything all at once.
>>560483751Why are you calling it miners sexo
>>560483751I am a pretty good 3d artist. Look man. Art is hard. I'm convinced people that are wired to be artists are paying some penitence for something in a past life. I suggest just paying or learning sculpture and be a real one
>>5604817053d will always be superior to 2d in this realm. To be clear, you have provided an image of an 8 directional sprite. If you want to change your character radically due to a new idea/art style change/any of the normal evolutions that happen to an idea over time, you are looking at:>Modify one model>Modify 8 sprites, at best 4 if you're mirroringOften cited in support of 2d is that it's easier to draw which simply isn't true, maybe in the 90s but technology now really favors 3d.If I wanted an 8 directional sprite, I'd prerender it from a model before I made 8 copies of a vtuber facing different directions.Try it and for a month of so you'll feel like you're really onto some esoteric wisdom, but after 2 months or so into your project you'll become increasingly frustrated as minor things become massive undertakings.
>>560483501A AAA character model takes way more than a week to make unless you count using assets or pre-made tools like metahuman, then it might be faster. It's probably at least a month to two months, maybe faster if you have a full team.
>>560485028Does it cost a lot to commission 3d models for games? I haven't looked into anything like that at all yet. I'm going low poly of course but I have a vision that definitely requires custom stuff vs using assets (at least where I can). Im familiar with how much live 2d models can go for, but I have no knowledge of the 3d game asset commission market.

Right now she's in a kind of power position, being the one who always invites you and talks to you. You should try things like "come see me after work" or "let's talk a bit" and so on. Really all I'm saying is be assertive and that's it. If her attitude changes after that, you could figure out if she's geniune or just the same girl trying to ruin you again. Or literally just ask her if she's that same girl. And yes, game development.
>>560485903AI generated models have horrendous topology making them a no go for simply modifying them. You can just retopologize them to give you usable geometry though and zbrush's zremesher works really well even for characters. Its not perfect but its like 95% of the way there.

This one has more replies so I'm assuming this is the thread. Submissioms are OPEN! There will be two rounds this time. As of now the submissions are open for regular trailers, but starting May 1st, devs can double dip (or anyone who wants to be a part of this) by submitting a gameplay clip for our rapid fire section! An example can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FnSXcSuFWqpPQpYgZng1Vi2fDSYarscZ/view?usp=sharing To sign up your game, use this form (which will be on our site at a later date) https://forms.gle/BrM7MR3a4hZn4VNYA until May 23rd. And read the requirements here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MT78rxUFBo99IHYw7pW84Rc7B9cZWMBlJUKikfWabOw/edit?usp=drivesdk So far we've had three games submitted and we already see some very interesting submissions this year! And don't forget we are attempting a Steam expo page so sign up sooner rather than later so we can get a list to send to Valve.
>>560522430Thank you zukjeet but as a "flopdev" you wouldn't want my game anyway so I won't submit it.
>>560522127Use your brain, if you aren't an LLM.

>>560522430i want to support your show but youre an annoying shitposter
>>560522430Is this a blackmail scheme?
>>560485370It can be expensive or it can be dirt cheap depending on who you are dealing with, how poor the artist is, and how complex your requirements are.Are you on the discord? I will make you low poly models (for money) provided you gather a few examples of what you want the assets to look like. With finite resources you would do well to find generic assets in your style that are cheap/free and then only commission items that you cannot cover otherwise.
How do you come up with an iconic looking character for your game. I want the main character to be a Wall-E style robot but how do I make it original.
>>560500203I should have worded it better. Yes I have a wife who is a popular artist. I know that commissions are expensive. I should have asked a direct price comparison vs just saying "is it expensive" so my bad. Like, do they range from 300-600 USD (cheaper end for what I know of 3d modeling) or is this something in the 5k-10k range?
>>560522837AI, I'm not going to do your thinking for you. But I can give you a hint. Also, I care about quality here, not the source.
>>560523068Well first off you're not supporting me You're supporting the devs that participate in the show. Take the namefag out of the show You still have the show and all the incredible people that work on it and the devs that participate. So think of me however you want but don't let that turn away from supporting your fellow anon.
>>560523248To answer this question accurately you would need to include some idea of what is being commissioned. A model could range from a janky segmented ps1 style with visible seams and a stretched PNG face, to a fully rigged face with visemes and corrective shape keys.
>>560523218If the game is iconic, the character will be iconic. The amogus is a great example of this. Very similar designs have been done a few times in the past. Off the top of my head, Shantae is like an example of an opposite though. The games are great but the character designs are definitely the selling point of that series since the beginning. For like, friend slop. I feel like anything works at this point. Start with an idea of how you want character creation to go. If you just want something simple like color changes and adding props, then very simple like amogus is the way to go. You could literally just start off with a base similar to EVE for a game and it would work very well. For anything story driven, big thing is give something a human element. If its not the design, its the personality, but give it the ability to showcase emotions somehow. Wall-E is iconic because of his eyes and his personality, not the rest of the frame (sadly). Come up with a lore reason as to why your robot has the particular frame they have, and then see where you can fit human like features. Shit even just a single eyebrow on an amogus would give them so much more personality.

why do devs never talk about just how bad it is to find games you like on steam? the discovery queue is absolute dogshit, arbitrarily limited to only 12 tags, shows only popular games instead of relevant games to your tastes, and it doesn't show games older than 4 months for some reason.there is also another way to browse the FULL steam catalogue, is by inputting an empty search query on the steam store, and then browsing games with as many tags filtered as you want but that still has the problem of forcing you to judge games based on tiny fucking capsules, and to see the screenshots you have to individually hover over each gamelike this is the big problem. i can't tell if the games i would like to play simply don't exist or they do and i just can't find them. you literally have to rely on external means of finding games. for a store that holds at least a 70% monopoly over digital distribution, it shouldn't be this fucking bad
>>560523248Pricing for 3D models can vary a lot depending on what you need. Could you share more details about the model? For example:• What kind of model is it (character, prop, environment, etc.)?• Style (realistic, stylized, low-poly, etc.)• Intended use (game, animation, 3D print, etc.)• Level of detail / polycount• Do you need texturing, rigging, or just the base model?Once I know the details I can give a more accurate price estimate.
>>560522837It's not the technical aspects of the art he's talking about anon, it's a common sense matter concerning what is pictured:The cyber punk man has a bespoke notch cut into his shirt to reveal a blue light. On the skin alone, this type of thing would still look cliche, but to put a shirt on over top of your cyber punk glow-spotted skin and cut around the lights so they still accent you as a cyber-guy stands out immediately as dumb to the viewer.

Has developed paused on the village defense simulator where two sisters use an onager to direct artillery fire against ladybugs that are attacking their garden, but the bugs are also rapists and everyone is wearing traditional South American garb? Also one sister is white and the other is brown. Really promising game but haven't heard from the dev since...

what if you don't try to find meaning in gamedev, but you do gamedev to create meaning? it sounds the same, but the intention is different. you don't try to find meaning in gamedev because "it is meaningful", but you do it to "create a meaning" out of nothing basically. to fill the void.so it becomes a vehicle to create meaning and not something you "consume for meaning".

my life is a constant cope about the fact that games are 95% art (animations, 2D ui art, 2D textures, 3D models, shaders, vfx etc.)although i constantly notice how many artists are releasing beautiful games with absolute shit gameplay and lack of cool mechanics cause they can't code anything beyond "if you click A, B happens".ideally we'd see more collaboration, but as we all know collaboration only really works with funding and paying everybody like employees.so without a wave of investors, there wont be collaboration. programmers will make ugly ass games with cool mechanics and artists will make beautiful games with boring ass gameplay. that's the future.

Basically everything gets some kind of wrap in the real world, nanotech filaments made into a form fitting thing (dedicated e girls and Indians just got them tattooed into their skin since they're always online anyway) so the object can be grey boxed into a game, then overlaid at runtime to change what it looks like in games, movies, etc. Entertainment became set up and tear down affairs, where indie teams became people playing with literal grey boxes and you could pause movies to yell at the ractors (reactive actors) if you didn't like the way your movie was going.

updating boss levels now to behave similar like the new bokube demo boss level; segments are added where boku has to damage the boss with a sword puzzle cube but it has different attacks than that bird boss. Updating their art on these boss levels too while im at it. There are 9 bosses in the game and only this 2nd boss out of 9 needs the most work as the rest are pretty good already I suspect after this forest frog boss the other 7 bosses to touch up will be fast and then I can get back to the very last lore and bug related tasks before having a 1.0 for Bokube. I paid my bills for the month and a winter storm hit us that made my boss want to take off for 2 weeks so I think im good to post everyday on agdg for the next 2 weeks/rest of this month constantly so we will see.

>>560597367just use a dictionary for the item data and serialize it to a json file or use the built in var_to_bytes for something slightly more compact. you create a dedicated autoload for the inventory manager that handles the dictionary during runtime and then use the fileaccess class to dump that data into a user folder path whenever you need to save. for loading you just check if the file exists with fileaccess and then parse the data back into your dictionary structure so your ui can rebuild the slots. don't overcomplicate it with custom resources unless you actually need the inspector integration because simple key value pairs for id and quantity are usually enough for most projects.

Why doesn't anyone talk about mobile games here?
>>560599656A lot of anons think they're above them or that the mobile game market is too hard to break into but its funny because there's increasingly little difference between PC gaming and mobile gaming.
>>560599656Mobile devs NEED to spend money on player acquisition. There's no way around it. Steam games can make it big with just organic social media marketing.
>>560599951You can use organic social media marketing for mobile games though? It might even work better than marketing PC games because the game most likely will be in a vertical format which is ideal for short form videos.
>>560598691Yeah there's basically no reason to own one if you have a gaming PC, but porting your game to consoles could potentially boost sales. I'd at least make sure your game is playable on Steamdeck since that's probably a really easy port
>>560600158It's really not the same. PC gamers are willing to pay for premium games, while mobile games have to be F2P w/ MTX. This allows PC devs to make very small and reasonably scoped self-contained experiences, which are good for content creators, who will organically spread a game's visibility. I've slowly shifted to just letting Claude write shit. I used write 100%, then ask for reviews, then one day it just spit out a replacement that was a straight upgrade over what I wrote, while maintaining the programming intent, then I used Claude Code in the ide for faster review, then writing alongside, and now it's like 90/10 Claude Code and me. I have to admit that it pretty much always does what I want, and that 10% where I write is just from reading the diff and making my own edits, then telling it what I'm changing. It feels like having a coworker who is just way better than me at the job. Shit just feels weird when it works, I still have the impression that it just shouldn't. Which leads me to ask: is there anyone who started out day 1 with AI code? Has anyone ever just gone full send, telling the AI "I need this code for this effect in the game," letting it run, and just testing what comes out? ... Does it work?
>>560631832i was using chatgpt to write pull requests like two years ago for a game server lel, obviously it failed like 9 out of 10 times and the scope was tiny, but it got the job done eventually
>>560611743I swear I've seen these characters, is this a character creator you can buy or are these all hand drawn?
>>560631832>is there anyone who started out day 1 with AI codeyeah, current project is AI from day 1. started a couple of weeks ago. architecture is great, making tools along the way. a lot of the time I will get claude to make an artifact of a proposed effect and I refine it with prompts from there and when happy tell it to splice it into the game
>>560631234the issue is the same, you'll get technical debt until your code is so much spagetti it simply can't be fixed.

>>560632197Yes but the problems you describe aren't unique at all? If the AI is anything, it's an engineer that lives in the IDE. It's an employee. Can you think of ANYTHING unique, any unique drawback, to AI specifically? Because if you hired 3 great coders, you'd get the same problem, unless you as the PM understand the project. Human coders aren't randomly immune to technical debt, and PM not understanding the code base is a day 0 problem, it's been a thing since the first ever lead engineer got a new job. There were literally ancient Egyptians who had to deal with this shit while building the pyramids, when some guy with all the tribal knowledge for a project just died and they had to find new lead guys.

>>560634043>claude make me some really clean code >writes something cleaner than cris's humanslop
>>560634202I went down this road too and now I accidentally have a bot that can play my entire game. Like, competently but not creatively. It's eerie. It can execute a full loop from base to overworld, dungeon, to overworld, and back to base, fully transparent (for debugging). Thousands of sims to test the friction while exploring the game (fights basically), then it can actually start at hub, prepare for expedition while reasoning about what to bring, explore overland for POIs, assess POIs for perceived danger, engage if acceptable, then complete a POI (multi floor procgen dungeons with enemies, loot, and locked doors/chests/traps), assessing main goal (explore and loot) and sub goals (unlock that chest for loot) alongside fights inside the dungeon, then backtrack through the dungeon, leave the poi, and report back to base with loot. The AI is insane to watch and now IDK wtf I'm even supposed to do with an AI like this because I intend for humans to play, but maybe it can become enemy AI. Shit would have taken me 6 months to make a private AI game tester in the past, now it legit just works after 2 weeks. What a time to be alive...
>>560634830Watching my bot play my game(and pushing the speed up and watching it clear the screen of enemies in seconds) makes me want to pivot into an incremental/idler thingy.

>>560635421is there a way to make AI play your game? how?
It's been known for half a century that the hardest part of programming isn't writing code but knowing what code to write. ML tooling has the inverse value proposition for programmers as it does for artists, it can automate the tedious parts of the job while leaving you the fun parts. You can focus on system design, architecture, and the larger creative objectives of the game while letting the bot be the code monkey that implements your plans.
>>560635421why not both?

>>560635806actually it does too for artists, you can draw a sketch or use a 3d model pose and go from therefor me the tedious parts of arts is having to redraw/do lineart after the sketch and anything that involves the lasso tool or bucket fill, i hate thaat shit
>>560636038do you use asset packs or are those generated? bexause thats a lot of mixels but looks cool otherwise

>>560636398who cares about fucking ecelebsthey should make an e-celeb containment board already, its a decade over due
>>560635759I guess it depends on the game but generally you just start at the beginning of any loop. If you want the AI to do the full game from start screen to end screen, then start at the start screen. How do you start the game? How do you orient? Your AI needs to know that. It also needs to know what the constants and variables are, and it needs to have a syntax for interacting with your game. So if you were making an AI to play Mario, it needs to know what jump is, what walk is, what run it, what goombas are, what holes in the level are, what obstacles are, etc. Once it knows the syntax of the world, the it needs GOAP, or goals, and these would be things like "explore the level," "avoid enemies," "look for pitfalls and jump over," "kill enemies if possible," etc. There's no real answer other than "teach code how to play your game."

It's such a weird hobby too, because it's supposed to be creative, but indie devs are constantly picking the corn out of other dev's shit, we call these games clones typically. No innovation, just consoom meta and shit out copy. This is why over 70% of indie games are financially insolvent, and of the 30% who make a profit, 50% merely break even. It's a consoomer hobby.
