I'm working on a game in Godot and I've been building the way the state machine interfaces with the actual game in a way that I think is retarded but I'm not sure what the proper way would be. Right now the structure is that there's a Main scene, and that sees the global StateMachine and then that StateMachine sees the different invidual states. The states don't see the Main scene, or any other actual scene in the game, so I've been reference the Nodes in game by putting them in a group and then doing something like var combat_ui = get_tree().get_first_node_in_group("combat_root") to reference the node in the game.

I feel like it's really retarded to make a group like this with the intent of only having one specific Node in that group, but I don't know how else to handle it. It works fine but I feel like it's going to cause problems for me later on. Are there any good tutorials on StateMachines anyone knows of or anything?

Anyway, Friday is the last day you can release a game on Steam, since they don't allow new releases on Weekends anymore. This in theory could lead to "more exposure" because people see your game Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the next batch, Monday.
I was curious if it has been debated here already, or if it's considered general knowledge that releasing your game Friday is the best move for an indie developer, or if all of AGDG's successful games being released that day was just coincidence and not a calculated move on the developers side.

spent some time tweaking my pixelation shader. i think it's starting to look better. 4x is probably the better looking but x3 gives some more detail. the dithering here in this example is probably a bit aggressive but it can toned down to dither edges in a smaller gradient that's less noisy everwhere.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think the problem is called by your `IEnumerator LandingRecoverry()`. You're doing a yield in there to wait some kind of time, but the game continues to process during this wait. You'd either need to do a secondary check to ensure the world state you expect is still valid before attempting the animation, or give yourself some way to put things into a coroutine that you can interrupt. Timing issue? Be VERY careful waiting on things or "sleeping". As they say, life moves on.

Gamers will play 2d games like Dwarf Fortress or Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead or Space Station 13 etc even though they have non-animated 2d avatars simply sliding around and combat based purely on numbers without any visible mechanics.

It looks cool, I think if you want to take it further (or more like just satisfy my curiosity), from what I gather Project Shadowglass saves a 360 degree snapshot/image of the environment around you so when you're stationary and rotating you're just looking at different parts of the image. This was motivated by finance shit (making a backtesting system), but I implemented my own expression trees or whatever for the first time in C#.

A Series is an object that holds a Node. Nodes can be anything like MathNode, ConstantNode, SMANode, etc. Each one has its own set of args, and an internal buffer. They have a hashcode that depends on the node type, the buffer reference, and the args used. So if I call SMA(20), it always hashes the same buffer and skips additional work.

Series also holds a wrapper around several math ops, so I can do like Series + Series, which generates a new graph and as soon as I try to assign a Series object onto a float[], it evaluates the graph. Very cool stuff.

In terms of VIDEOGAMES, I suppose I can use a very similar technique to work on scripts, or parsing user input. I'm thinking like the FF12 gambit system for AI (eg, nodes to compare hp, distance, etc)

If you have to ask to not waste bandwidth odds are that you probably can't run it. Keep in mind the smallest model can do some tasks well but it's not amazing for any long task needing coherence. Where is the origin of the spherecast? If you're starting it too low or too high it could be a problem. The small maxDistance could also making a problem with the sphere shape and the character's collider. If it never hits anything because the collider reaches further then that's obviously wrong.

When you're having problems with casting it helps to draw some debuglines/shapes for them so you can see what they are doing.

Yesterday I was waiting for something next to some guy who was having a "business" phone conversation. He was talking to some subordinate and telling them what they did wrong and what to do. He wasn't exactly unpleasant or rude (although I wouldn't talk like that even to guys I hired on Fiverr), but it made me remember what was it like to be working at a job and to have a boss. Partly thanks to gamedev I haven't had a boss for a long time and I'm dreading having to find a job again. Which I'll have to in 148 days because that's when my money runs out and when I'll have to let go of my game, either ship it or abandon it. Even if the very unlikely happens and my game "makes it", it won't be quickly enough to save me from having to get a job. It's like a dark cloud hanging over me.
Today I'll be doing performance optimization. The common wisdom is you shouldn't be doing premature optimization, but that just means don't waste time optimizing before you encounter performance issues, it doesn't mean wait until polish to fix performance issues.

Need feedback on a mechanic. After you die, for each boss slain you get a signature permanent boost from his exclusive pool. You can reroll them and get another from his pool, but you potentially get up to 10 boosts at once.

Do you find this mechanic interesting or confusing? I could have the player choose only one from this list, and make them 10x more powerful, but this will introduce an asymmetry: to get 10 boosts right now you need to reach wave 1000, but with this change a wave 100, while limiting your choice to the first boss pool, will grant you the same amount of boosts as a wave 1000 run, just from a smaller pool.
