Clair Obscur doesn't exist without the many seminal 90s-2000s JRPGs and all the many other media influences it wears on its shoulder. You could easily throw FFIX in as well, or even Tactics if that's your thing. I'd personally put XIII in a similar ranking as COE33, because much of what E33 was going for (IMO) calls back to what FFXIII did. They simply expanded on the cinematic JRPG concept with even more JRPG genre staples and modern mechanical sensibility. A traditional JRPG overworld, turn based combat with fun elemental combos and QTEs, but there's dodge and parry spam, over the top Korean animations, a yellow bar Stagger/Break system, misery porn storyline that makes you cry, etc.There's a tremendous amount of things to like in that game, but there are also some rough edges and cracks that hold it back. It was punching above its weight majorly, a AA game made by rookie devs dialing in on what it wanted to do to reproduce the classic JRPG FF experience, and they simply did it. It's cinematic and grand, but it's also a bit silly and gamey, very satisfying to play and incredibly adaptable to individual player strategy. It captures the feeling of playing a classic JRPG but in the mold of a "modern" cinematic movie game, something that FF has continuously intended to do but haven't quite nailed in awhile. The phenomenal success of going back to basics and doing something authentic proves what we all know is true, the formula of traditional world structure and command/turn-based combat (with real time elements!) can still be one of the best types of game ever. It just has to adapt the formula in the right way while telling a dramatic story with memorable characters
