Using Claude has been a great and eye-opening experience for me as a gamedev. It feels like sitting next to someone who knows the job and watching them work through actual game code. I’m getting familiar with the concepts game programmers deal with all the time: gameplay systems, state machines, animation logic, input handling, save data, UI flow, performance, and the patterns that make a game hold together.

It’s easier to remember the articles, devlogs, and GDC talks I read or watch now, because I can immediately work with Claude to implement those ideas, test them in a prototype, and see how they behave in a real game instead of only understanding them abstractly.

Claude has been like a tireless senior programming partner: patient, always available, and great for keeping momentum. It helps me explore ideas quickly, compare approaches, understand patterns, and turn vague concepts into something playable. The more I use it, the more I learn how to guide the process, think clearly about features, and make better decisions about how the pieces of a project fit together.

I have a strong suspicion that getting good at making games with AI means learning how to collaborate with it better and better. At first it helps explain concepts, generate examples, and move faster. Over time, you develop the judgment to steer it more precisely, make better calls, and use it as a real creative and technical multiplier. The ideal is combining your own taste, design sense, and project knowledge with Claude’s speed, breadth, and ability to help you iterate.

Overall, I honestly don’t think I’d be as far along without this. My generation mostly didn’t get hired to work alongside industry vets as interns or junior gameplay programmers, so this is what I have instead of just watching GDC talks, reading engine blogs, scrolling /agdg/, and letting the info go in one ear and out the other. With Claude, I can turn that information into working prototypes and better habits.

Yea, I think so. I was stumped for awhile but I broke out of it by making throwaway sketches of what I expect to find screen-by-screen. One pitfall that I used to have a lot was making the level too long, when in fact, shorter levels tend to be more fun for the player and the dev.

Photon Blade. This game has good art, and the music in particular is really good. Did you make the music yourself, if so, mind if I ask how?

The tutorial is still a bit rough. I really think you should have the tutorial floor spare your health, it can be really frustrating to die over and over just to get the hang of the controls. What's more, the tutorial text is too vague. Why didn't you just tell me that you just had to crouch and jump to jump higher? Or that rotating the joystick and pressing I brought up the gun? I could see people getting really frustrated with this right away. I basically just kept spamming the dash, the high jump and the jabs and that's how I got through. I think it wasn't too bad after I understood these three moves, maybe the point is to slowly get ahold of the strange controls like in Mooncat?

I think you should reconsider the controls one last time. If you could strip down the controls to the arrow keys and 3 or 4 action buttons, I think this game could be a lot of fun.

I've made all the music with FL Studio and mostly stock plugins. It's the thing I'm best at so I don't even have to spend a lot of time making new tracks. I plan to have a unique song for every level.

I know the tutorial is complete ass right now. I re-built it yesterday. The game is much more playable if I'm coaching. The control scheme will stay largely unchanged, but I just need to teach it properly and add a dedicated easy difficulty.

The game isn't optimized at all and it runs at 240hz so I can see it slowing down on older CPUs. There's a setting in the menu to reduce the tick rate to 60hz, which should give you some headroom, but it's less tested so I didn't put it as the default.

synthy's polygon Particle FX Pack is pretty good, you prob just need to render your screen at a lower resolution to pixelate it a bit. https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/vfx/particles/polygon-particle-fx-pack-art-by-synty-168372 I had some issues converting a few effects to URP since it's using built-in, also it has retarded smoke effect where it uses 3d mesh for smoke particle instead of just billboards, but those issues are easy to correct.

I paused the interior I was modeling to make a copy of the first NG2 encounter, to learn engine systems. It took a while, but some of the basics work now.
This is a test with a sample combo, with an animation asset I got from fab.
I am using UE5 GAS to link things together, and bind the input to abilities such as jumping. The combo system required more work because of how the GAS abilities and animation montages work. So I separated it into 2 abilities: ComboInput and ComboExecution. The execution one manages the animations, which contain notifies that I use to do combos. The input ability deals with the player input. There is a separate combo component as well managing the combo state.

I added some visual debugging as well.
White cube = nothing happening.
Yellow = input buffer window open. You can press a button here to try and buffer for the next combo
Green = Attack window. If you have a valid buffered input, it triggers the next attack here. If you don't, you have the entire window to trigger the attack with a valid input.
Red = No open windows. Serves as both a "spam zone" and as a "cooldown" window. No juice or anything yet, but I like the progress so far.

A similar zoom in the ARMA games works great though it is a smaller amount than that. If you want accessibility options then you could add one that makes the zoom snap if the scaling is the nauseating part for some. Gambleslop (and sometimes horrorslop) is more effective than sexslop, because sexslop has to overcome being banned from everywhere and ashamed gamers not wanting it on their credit card history.
