i realized why i suck at making games. i always assumed i'm normal and think gamers want the same type of games as me. when in reality i'm a lone wolf sperg with weird taste.just browsing a bunch of tiktok my first assumption is that people like simple violence with good graphics. i grew tired of shooters, they didn't. especially young people who first get into gaming. same reason why simple music is still popular or why football is still so popular. people like simple things.just because i played hundreds of games doesn't mean they did.i guess that's the danger of solodev. you don't have that normie ceo or marketing guy that tells the programmers what normal people do.
is multiplayer solved and learnable or do companies like valve and riot games have secret sauce to sync game states?
>>566339445forgot to add that 4chan also isn't social media and it's the same. i think 4chan is normal. yet i'm here because i'm a sperg. normal people don't use 4chan. they don't even use reddit.
>>566339617Every major game engine has built-in high-level multiplayer synchronization.
>>566339445Normies aren't exactly playing indie games though they're playing cod, fortnite, csgo, and hero shooters

i wasn't aware how popular shooters still are. i thought that trends change over time, but it seems like life is just old wine in new bottles. i thought players want new experiences, but what they really want is just new appearances.

>>566348856independence is such a stupid concept, not a single thing in the universe is independent. the only thing that makes any sense is putting the word into context, which means that you have nobody telling you what game to make. if i make something and nobody tells me what to do, that is where the word makes any sense.you are indie when nobody is telling you what to make or how to make it.
>>566349218>OR* does 2d topdown lend itself better to complex systems games?
>>566349308in like 2012 i as a true legit solodev made a game that made $600,000 and didnt even advertise it. that's how powerful the golden age of indie games was. if you released literally anything you made a fuckton of money because like 50 games per year released on steam. of course now nothing i make would ever make money and my game was literal actual trash fucking garbage even back then.

>>566368418indie devs have this whole "issue" backwards. They're worried about scope, so they only focus on extremely tiny games. When they should be focusing on building up reusable projects, components and assets, so they can get more games of increasing scope out, faster.
>>566339445Like other anon said normies aren't exactly playing indie games. There's plenty of other spergs in the indie games sphere who buy and play games. Look at the games you like. There's probably some pretty highly reviewed games in there. Why couldn't you make a game that caters to that sperg audience? >>566339617Multiplayer is solved in the sense that you as a dev won't really have to worry if your UDP packages are getting to the players or how the players connect to a server. Most engines handle that stuff just fine. The stuff that is "solved" but not shared is all the gameplay feel and networked gameplay implementation side stuff. How does WoW feel so good to play despite being online? I don't fucking know and I don't know how I could find out. How does Overwatch make all that movement and special abilities work smoothly and look right in a networked environment? Idk. Maybe that stuff is out there somewhere but I haven't come across it. Maybe AI knows, I haven't tried making a multiplayer game in a while so I haven't consulted AI about it.
Is anyone familiar with a good inventory/item tutorial for an RPG? I have one that functions, but I always second guess my own designs for things seeing as I end up having to figure out a lot of it on my own, but I'm not operating from a position of much knowledge or authority. It would be nice to get a chance to see a more sophisticated system than the one I have before I expand mine into having equipment and stuff.

>>566365812of course they care about maintaining their thirdies. those guys do unpaid shilling and they stockpile the Bank of Steam like crazy, giving them a light at the end of the tunnel cashout option that allows Valve to triple dip profit (unlike their previous cashout methods like account selling that Valve couldn't profit on).

This is just one example, the same goes for every component of a game.

The donuts were 40% off so I'd be throwing money away by NOT buying some. The math made sense at the time. The next 7-10 days I'll be working on some updates to my existing games. I'm surprised at the trepidation I feel at having to work on them again. It's my games, my code, I should feel confident with it but I was feeling anxious for weeks at having to do this. Outdated dependencies, breaking changes, builds keep failing, not remembering how the code works and that's just to compile it so it runs. I'm adding to my schedule that I need to update each of my games at least once every 3 months if there's anything to update. I think this whole thing with a lot of the industry moving to Unreal will have some big consequences in the near future. It is a big mistake. We are already seeing all the poorly running Unreal slop with the traditional Unreal rendering artifacts that make the game look like ass. Maybe it made sense to some penny pinchers in the short term based on some profit calculations but I don't think it will play out to be true in the long run. Large studios are already experiencing mass scale brain drain and now they're forcing their remaining skilled devs to work in Unreal which would make anyone consider ending it. They're gonna be left with a bunch of AIslopgineer jeets who deliver slop which is gonna reduce game quality and performance even further.
>it works and plugged into all my other scripts like butter
>>566372440What about FromSoftware?
>>566373248It sounds like you're concerned about the industry-wide shift toward Unreal Engine and the potential long-term consequences. Your points about rendering artifacts, quality issues, and the impact on skilled developers are valid considerations. The move to Unreal might offer short-term financial benefits for some studios, but if it leads to a decline in game quality and a drain of experienced talent, it could have negative repercussions for the industry as a whole.Balancing technological adoption with maintaining high standards and supporting talented developers is crucial. If Unreal's limitations and the potential for lower-quality outputs become widespread, it could undermine the reputation of studios that rely heavily on it. On the other hand, the industry is always evolving, and challenges often lead to innovation and new solutions. What do you think would be the best way for studios to navigate this transition while safeguarding quality and retaining skilled talent?

>>566371427the gameplay, systems and even which camera I'm going to use isn't decided yet. I may want first person like Skyrim or Mass Effect camera or BG3 style. The important part is that I can make a story full of hard decisions that players will argue about endlessly with themselves and online. I may add companions or not. The goal of the game is to put a mirror in front of people and make them see how easily they are willing to compromise when they get a benefit out of it or someone cries convincingly enough. First person cam would increase immersion by a lot but it would make companion management worse or even infeasable. I'm not even sure what kind of artstyle I can manage that will look remotely decent because I'm not an artist. I'm even thinking of making it a roguelike like Blue Prince where you have to do repeated runs to try and get to the end with the moral choices changing some stuff about what kind of endings and characters you will get to see.

This approach does not work in my opinion.>Make some small vertical slice demo with a simple maze or a few roomsit's not a maze though, the current plan is that you are locked in a house and you have to survive waves of various events/visitors that come try to enter your house. The inspiration for this is the game "No, I'm not a Human" which I picked as the inspiration in hopes to vastly simplify and cut the scope.

>>566375005I really don't understand why that was a card game
>>566375595yes, I think I need a prototype that can hold all the things I want to accomplish with the game. My current thought is this: Isn't every good game almost like a card battler or like a board game with game pieces and a set amount of actions? I mean if you really boil an interactive 3d environment down to its possible choices at any given moment it should be like a board game. You can either do X, Y or Z. So I was thinking that the prototype that I should be building could be as simple as a series of multiple choice dialogues. The point is to prove that the mechanics can be married with the moral choices, that should be doable via text multiple choices too. Why build a 3d "game" at all until I actually now that my mechanics work together already.
>>566346316Someone posted a huge floppy white cock the other day and someone else said the hoodie looked like branno's. It was just a generic blue hoodie though

>>566349218Top down games offer a strategic view which makes it easier to parse large amounts of information. Going first person means putting more items on the mental stack as players now have to parse spatial information as well rather than have a perfect image at all times. So it depends what you want your game to be, SS13 has lots of complexity but it's also an early 2000s chatroom game so it depends which direction you want to lean in.

i've noticed that as a programmer i like specific games, games that let you build. yet that means i like making games. but this means my need to create affected my idea of a "dream game". e.g. i like complex systems. yet i can work on "complex systems" by just making a game. the game itself doesn't need to offer complex systems.it's like wanting to make a song about writing songs, or writing a book about writing books. there might be a market for it, but what it really means is the cat chasing its own tail.i think the real beauty is leaving the complexity in the code, while the product itself isn't complex for the player. i think all of this is a common theme in over-intellectualized abstract art and music. where the creator falsely assumes that the product needs to be complex, because they like complexity. when in reality they should find complexity in the process and make the actual product "seem" simple.

Internet is being worked on. Doing some performance testing.> max amount of vram used up at a time is 7.5 GBs. Performance doesn't take a hit unless the system is below 3 gbs of VRAM>sdd is hdd is much more important than I realized for performance bottlenecks>only uses 2 GB of system RAM at a time>CPU seems to only use 2 threads. This doesn't mean too much since its 1.1ms for rendering code and tasks in the background. Average of 0.5ms. Overall its 15ms for everything all at once where changes take 2-3ms. Most of this is due to character animation updatesNot too bad. I wish I could do more for lowering the engines VRAM requirements for the 3d models without making them look like shit.

Also for your grafitti paint, the mspaint spray tool used to put a kind of pixel splatter pattern, you should use that. We can tel tat you've scribbled with a fat brush which isn't really right unless you had the graffiti artists holding paint buckets and paint brushes in their hand. you can probably download the old versions of mspaint to use the spray tool anyway. also i think there should be some shadow between the snowed on car and the wall. and the ladder is too wide but you still probably want it to stand out to the player so maybe give it a shimmer or something (you can animate it frames?)

I want to push this idea a bit more before I try makign the art more solid.Adding classes/skill trees is one idea I had to increase the complexity.Another idea was a "city builder" system where you attach more islands to your combat platform. somehow the things you add would provide bonuses to the player.Perhaps the game could be two floating cities fighting one another for resources. Like they dock against one another send their best champions and they fight on their cities behalf. If you lose your people starve.Thematically sounds cool but im not sure what bonuses i could add via the city to make it interesting whilst keeping the classes unique.https://angular.itch.io/auto-battle-tactics

There's some handmade burgers from the local joints which can be good and then there's this fries & cut up sausage combo box with a bunch of toppings that's popular here which can on occasion be quite nice too. Finished a retopo, bake, and bone transfer this week.Looks alright, went from ~30k tris to ~2k. Material needs a little fine tuning.Don't usually like doing things this way, but Unreal free store shit just dropped it in my lap, so I figured why not.Additionally finished some other models and logic for visual mcguffins for player progression. Also did a pre-emptive performance check to see how the render pipeline is handling stuff and if I'm mostly hitting performance targets. Problem is I'm not skilled enough to know if the RHI stats in Unreal play-in-editor are lying to me, and if PIE is not performing optimizations that would normally run in a fully compiled game. More to dig in to and learn, I guess.

>>566450636>>566450760hmm. its from my experience been by posting on demoday (your own and on others) and then talking to people who like after that. but itch doesn't have DMs which sucks but usually people have their discord link in their itch page>>566450862i was just going to say, write a python script. but the language that you already know and have setup is best so i can def see opening a already configed project and just making a quick func being the way. its kinda like the way how all my projects are just subfolders in one mega repo now. git has file deduplication so you can just copy paste stuff and git wont store the shit more than once (in the history that is) because it is based on file hashes.
>>566449259>>566450636I can also confirm this >>566450183, but IMO it's not going to be better anywhere else. Game jams are very hit or miss (with misses more often than not), but at least you can still push through and ship games this way. It's a bit annoying to have to carry a team, but it is what it is. It's kind of like whenever you have to do a class project for school and one guy does 90% of the work. Realistically, that's how a collab is always going to have to be.
>>566451873WTF so is the only way to reliably find good collaborators to EMPLOY THEM?Is it that hard to find someone who wants to consistently collaboratively build a game just for the intrinsic fun of it?
>>566399165>>566394934>>566398806It went okay.Game was well loved by ages 5-10 whomst attended.
>>566452140Employing people isn't going to get you reliably good collaborators either. Projects need directors, and directors need to understand how everything works. You can't just pay someone to "do art" and have them magically know what's the right art to do. You need to have enough art skills to properly communicate to them what kind of art you need them to do.Plenty of people want to build games for fun. 99% of them are just going to be absolute shit at it, yourself included.

>>566453958Hopefully it just means the Age of the Ideaguy has finally come. You all said ideas are cheap but soon it will be the real currency that determines what games succeed or fail. That and sucking off "influences" unfortunately, that wont change I dont think

I'm still angry about that one guy in the last thread yesterday who said that he just aims to make 100$ with his game and asking what kind of game he should make. You have one job: To have a soul. You failed. Go work at McDonalds or for Goldman Sachs or any of the hundreds of thousands of other jobs you have available in this world. You don't have to pick an artform to shit up with your idealess, soulless "product" that you barely care more about than the shit you took this morning.
>>566469292maybe he's one of those people who's in love with the idea of being able to say "i released a game on STEAM" he doesn't care about the game he cares about the prestige of having a game on steam. if steam suddenly ceased to exist, then i would not be shocked if suddenly him and many others give up on gamedev despite itch.io, epic, and gog existing
>>566469563>being able to say "i released a game on STEAM"Reminds me of pic related where the main character works at a place that made money by "publishing" books but never sells any copies other than giving a bunch of copies to the author who was willing to pay a bunch of money to get a few physical copies of his book to give to people he knows and pretend to be a published author.

If you get hit, game over, start from the beginning. As each level progresses, your vehicle gets slower and slower, thus making it more challenging to get to the end, but the 1 time use abilities also become better and better.

I was thinking about how to integrate online and offline play. Without forcing always on like diablo 4.I'm thinking that online items can only be used when online.Local items are usable online or offline. They can be generated offline by the completion of time based crypto hashes (math problems hard to parallelise). The difficulty of the hash is determined by what the user is doing. Could an offline user generate items by building a generator? Sure, but the rate of verification of items will be far lower than playing normally online or macroing online. This way items can be added to the market from offline.
