In other MMO games or even looter shooters guns are usually just stats with maybe a single effect. Borderlands for instance has levelled items so you will eventually drop what you are using for a higher level item but you can regrind the same items at a higher level if you want. Though one thing Borderlands and something like Division have in common is that gear only has 1 perk or effect while the rest are just stats which is easier to let go of compared to Destiny with all these perk rolls on guns and how hard it is to get a perfect roll. Then with sunsetting in Destiny you'd ultimately just be refarming a different gun with the same perks. I honestly think with Witch Queen they should've used the crafting system and then the enhancement system to shift Destiny from a straight looter shooter to more like Call of Duty with weapon unlocks for using all the different guns, as that would give incentive to use different stuff without forcing you to use it or force you to give up your current stuff due to sunsetting.

Division 2 isn't much better than Destiny all it has is just various little activities and control points across the open world as its main content besides missions. Making patrol spaces glorified entrances to Raids or Strikes would be pointless if you could still access them from the menu. Halo infinite's open world is even shittier than any patrol space in Destiny, even its "hubs" are used to iirc just call down vehicles or weapons and thats it. Escalation protocol on Mar is pretty cool. But the rest of public events in other patrol zones are pretty shit.
I think what I like about patrols in destiny is what made them feel important (when it comes to the story). Those parts where you arrive in a area not normally occupied with guardian activity and you were assigned to put down a beacon gave you the illusion that your characters actions had the significance of being the guardian who originally established initial navigation for guardians to take advantage of the patrol space. I also liked the way quests connected to certain patrols. The sword quest was fun where you had to go and fight the one guy from the oryx cutscene and kill him in order to forge a sword. Atleast in D1 there were a handful of reasons to do patrol. Sleeper simulant made use of the warsat public events, public events in general started dropping way better rewards after rise of iron, you were able to explore some areas outside of a mission and it was nice to take in that exclusive environment without being shot or nagged at. While exploring bungie did offer collectibles throughout the world like ghost shells and in ROI and TTK we got siva fragments and grimorie cards which we could go read for some lore if you liked that kinds thing. Although strikes and raids are objectively better if we didnt have patrol content I feel like destiny would be alot more emptier than what it already is.

It always makes me a little mad that they were so close to making a system that could keep old destinations relevant with minimal cost and they decided to still be retarded faggots about it. Even though people didn't like Worthy the Bunkers were kind of a neat idea. If they combined the Worthy bunkers with the obelisks from dawn you would have a pretty good system that could be updated seasonally for minimal cost. Players grind activities on the destination for rep and materials to upgrade their bunker for the season and that in turn unlocks bonuses to loot drops and such. Could've also had weapon bounties like the obelisks that they add 1 of to each destination a season with an updated old gun. But Bungie hates putting depth into Destiny and even something as insignificant as fishing gets removed even though it gave some miniscule reason to actually go to certain destinations.
