there's no real lock on, it's semi lock on. It'll come on when your weapon is in range. Try centering your camera.

some weapon are a lot worse at locking on too. shots are very generous and bazookas have a big AoE, but with handguns you have to be pretty close to target with the direction you're facing.

In the customize menu, click on a slot to view the skill/item menu. Then while hovering over a skill or item, press a number to bind it to the hotbar. If you press Ctrl before opening the skill/item menu, you can assign things to your second hotbar, accessible by holding Ctrl/R2

Sadly all the stuff you need is in ultimate so hunting it yourself is tough. Heavenly/Battle ups your attack speed 40% and sells for 1 PD, get that quick. 0 Hit Frozen Shooters and Heaven strikers go for 1-3 PDs each, their specials are very good. You need 200 ATA for Heaven Striker though. Ranger Wall shield is 2PD and gives you 20 ATA. Will last you till Red Ring at 180. A 50Hit Hell/Demon Gun with V501(Upgrade to V502 later) will let you actually kill something. 50Hit Charge(Meseta) or Bersek(Hit Points) Vulcans(single target)/Arms(multitarget) are good damage for 1PD each.

The caveat though is you need high ATP to actually hit hard. Get or Raise a POW Mag, use some Power Materials and just plain level up. The struggle is actually real.

The 'meta' is TTF which can be accessed by going VR>Towards The Future. It's basically a boss rush of all the zones in Episode 1. If you just do that for levelling it'll get boring pretty quick tho IMO, but it exists as an option.

Well, for starters you picked a Ranger. They have a lot more going on than Hunter and Force. Hunter is beginner friendly, I suggest HUcast.

RA is the best and easiest class in early, mid, late and end game.
HUs need units (the things you put in your armor slots) to compete with RA. Smartlink, V101, Heaven/Arms (or Adept) v502
RA gets access to near end game gear extremely early and it's much easier shooting stuff than learning to work against the targeting system (opening quick menu to move around enemies)

RA is great if you already know how to play, but for a beginner it's much easier to focus on walking up to something, hitting two buttons and calling it a day. RA requires knowledge of spawn positioning (something which they already complained about), when to switch weapons, which weapon is appropriate for the situation and how to use traps both alone and in a party. You should also consider how long they will be playing this, as most of that gear will not see the light of day within two weeks.
