4chan's Bizarre MMOdventure is an ongoing project from a group of anons dedicated to playing through dead MMOs.
>How does it work?
Hold a tournament-style voting contest from a list of games
Play the game that wins the final round of votes for 2 weeks
After each game, we alternate lists of MMOs to vote on
A guild photoshoot will take place every Saturday, check thread for pic times
New adventure starts every other Saturday, after the week 2 guild pic

Feel free to recommend more games to be added to the lists and to encourage people to vote on a game you want to play.

DDO, which is STILL going as a thread. Seems like MMOdventure's biggest hit. Wakfu could join that though.
>>
>>2309508
It's been brought up more than a few times, but I'm not sure why it's not been added to the list. It's about as popular as CoH or Wakfu.
>>
>>2309600
nah
>>
>>2309600
Worth noting is that DDO week 3 was partially due to the end landing exactly on christmas. A lot of anons weren't going to be hopping onto a new MMO right away so the first few days would've been weak anyway.
Wakfu funnily enough is also lining up with Easter.

The list doesn't change after the +1 week, right?
>>
>>2313803
I've been asking for LoTRO since last year. I don't think anyone is interested.
And now isn't probably a good time. Their anniversary event is in a month and they'll probably do another free quest pack voucher. That'll be a good time to join.
I'm still only level 60 so I don't know the differences between the private server and the official server. Maybe less P2W stuff?
>>
>>2314218
We will play the game that came in second.
>>
Glad to see you guys got a little website up.
>>
>>2313803
>>2314292
I'll add it to the pending games list.
>>
>>2314292
I've only tried the game briefly years ago but it felt like pure questslop similar to wow or rift where you're encouraged to blitz through as many quests as possible. Compared to DDO where you're essentially doing one quest at a time with actual narrative exposition, which I prefer.

I hope I'm wrong because there's a lot about that game that I think is cool, and the community seems chill.
>>
>>2314292
Does LOTRO have the same FOMO "play with this code or never" shit that DDO did? yikes
>>
>>2314965
Shut up retard
>>
>>2315291
yes, and it's way more punishing for f2p players in general because you get virtually no inventory space. A private server would be great.
>>
>>2313877
You can't play on Echoes of Angmar unless you sign up for an account through discord.
>>
>>2315547
fucking gay
>>
>>2315547
Is that an issue? Unless discord is banned in some countries or something it's the same as signing up for any game account.
>>
>>2316028
I'm not doing discord and I think some other anons also refuse to engage with that platform.

That's only if you're a min-max retard. I go through each quest chain individually and read them thoroughly. If you love LoTR and want to immerse yourself in the world then LoTRO is the best game out there. If the goal is to reach end game in 1-2 weeks then the game isn't for you. Unfortunately that means the game is meant to be a long term play, not played in short bursts.

My problem with DDO is that the overall atmosphere of the game sucks ass. Except Ravenloft. I value immersiveness of the game a lot. If I can't get immersed then I can't really get into a game. Every dungeon basically plays out the same. Except with a twist depending on the expansion. Feywilds, same dungeons but with gnomes and fairies. Isle of dread, same dungeons but with dinosaurs. The only time the game has ever hooked me was when I did Mist of Ravenloft. The spooky atmosphere, and the spooky dungeons really sells that the expansion was spooky themed. Even some dungeon narrator uses those little girl voices that sounds scary. Playing the game makes me feel like I'm actually playing a scary game.

The live servers would be more fun and funnier because they're not well maintained anymore. Absolute jank kino

Lotro's atmosphere is amazing for sure. The best part of Lotro isn't the questing or combat its the farming, crafting, smoking, playing music.

Can you just play all the MMOs first and decide them for us?
>>
Is it really safe to join all these random pservers and install their shit? Anyone have like a best practices guide? Can you use a sandbox for these?
>>
>>2319905
It's not safe the first time but after you install the first round of malware and lose your bank account and all of your private data, you have nothing to worry about.
>>
>>2319905
It's probably not safe, but so far we haven't run into any trouble. Some private servers definitely look sketchy; we try to do some research and avoid those.
>>
>>2319905
Installing anything will always come with a risk, even if it's an official software or whatever. Best way to protect yourself is not be an idiot.
If you are really paranoid, get a new PC specifically for gaming. Do not use it for personal or work stuff. Bonus if you buy a second internet provider just for gaming, then use a reputable VPN.
If you don't want to do that then the best way to protect yourself when you only use on PC is to have a separate account with just the bare minimum permissions. Unfortunately people don't do this and just use their admin account for everything. The next step would be either using a virtual machine to play games (which is slower but more secure) or a sandbox (faster but has a risk of leaking data). It's up to you which one you go for.
After that it's basic opsec shit. Like not using the same username and password for multiple websites. Don't use your work/personal email when signing up for shit, just make a dedicated email for gaming/spam. I recommend using a password manager to keep track of all your logins and passwords and emails. Just don't be a fucktard and accidentally leak your master password or something. I personally use KeePassXC because more password managers require you to be online to access their servers to edit your passwords. If you can self host a password manager thingy then do it. Make sure your master password is NOT saved in your PC. Just write it down somewhere.
If you want to buy anything then use a prepaid credit card. Best is a gift card or something. This way no company has your credit card info. Some banks have their own prepaid CC, I wouldn't trust a third party offering a prepaid CC unless they're really reputable. Just make sure that the prepaid CC doesn't automatically withdraw from your own savings account because that defeats the whole purpose of getting one. It's just so when that card is stolen no one can use it if it has $0 in it.

>>
>>2320176
>>2319963
>>2319961
Ack. I'll have to think about it. I don't have enough of a life to have stuff to steal but there's always that risk some server badmin or something goes rogue I guess. It happens on a cycle in the pserver community. I use mail aliases and never make the same password but it's still a worry. Noscrubs looks okay for the next game, it doesn't even give a false positive like mapstosteal or something like usual.
>>
>>2320503
Recently there was a company that had their servers hacked. Perpetrator injected malware and made every update their games. It's not just private servers that has a risk of getting your shit stolen, it's also legit companies too.
>>
>>2320503
It is almost trivial to steal data right now. You can convince robots designed to be interesting to talk to to do it for you if you pretend they're your grandma.

The only real defense you have against a rogue server admin, private or public, is if your data was expendable in the first place. Even if you suck at having multiple passwords on recall, it's very easy to remember what your Blade And Soul Classic password is if it's "fuckbladeandsoulNigga123." If your heart bleeds enough to give a private host money for something, it's no skin off your bones if they try to overdraw a Visa gift card.

A rogue private server host would probably stop there if they're trying to keep that server running. They can only put in a keylogger once before people wise up, but they can skim the username/email/password combo you gave them with a lot more plausible deniability.

Obviously, though, change your realspace passwords often and try not to do your banking on every device you've ever owned.

More importantly, if this thread was trying to slowly lead people towards a trapped server, I think they'd have done it by now.

NTA, but worth mentioning Guilds in Iris can have their own teeny tiny icon associated with them, so we'd ideally want a name which could play into that.
https://noscrubs.net/discussions/guide-guild-mark
Also, we don't know how long/short Guild names can be, so try to keep it within ~12-16 characters for insurance.

May as well post what 'caps I've taken thus far...!
While it can be skipped, going through the opening Tutorial still offers its own unique mount to speed through the big top with, albeit one which vanishes upon entering the real world. Bit odd the game starts your off in some random circus, but we've certainly seen stranger opening acts in other titles.

Met-up with a local Hybrid who was just as green as me (seemingly the /only/ one of you bunch who'd arrived by that point), and we took to waltzing around town for a bit. The usual back-and-forth ferrying for starting quests, you know.
Love the tone this starting village sets all the same. These aurora-soaked purples and blues are precisely my kind of aesthetic.

Those opening quests aren't just for show either. Some of them offer additional Skill Points to add to your arsenal, always appreciated to come across.
That said, seeing as this server is currently running some pretty wild +EXP% bonuses due to its Easter event, don't be surprised if you outpace what quest are on-offer quite regularly when starting out.

The freebie mount you get at Level 5 is certainly, uh...
It's certainly something, alright.

One highly important thing to note: Your inventory is very, VERY small at the start (only 25 slots), but fortunately that's something which is shored-up as soon as you reach Level 10.
Speak with the Prince in town at that level for a short quest leading to a free 35-slot bag. Upon reaching Level 11, you also receive another 35-slot bag via your Gift Box.
It's rough-going at first inventory-wise, but things do become considerably more manageable before long.

With the server restart looming, both of us sprinted back to town for a quick photo by the fountain before it was lights-out.

Hopefully the downtime is quick (perhaps things are back up already). Feels like there's a game here to be had, albeit closer in spirit to something like Lucent Heart than anything.
In the brief time we had, we noticed that parties gain additional +EXP for slaying things together, so it'll behoove us to group-up when we can. Dungeon-running requires it later on regardless.
Making a Guild is also super cheap. Only requires the leader be Level 10 and have 10,000 Gold on them, which you'll be able to achieve in less than an hour. Should be able to spin one up soon, once things are live again.

The Hybrids encircle their tall-legged prey... Although I can't envision this being much of a feast; there's hardly any meat on these bones.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a 15-year-old server of an incredible obscure KMMO, one of the rare locals was quite excited about our sudden surge of greenhorns gathering in town, tossing some max-level buffs on all of us.
A gesture which would normally be appreciated by any other veteran of this title, but I'd advise right-clicking them off your status bar for now. Being superbuffed straight away before you've ever set foot out of town will give some pretty skewed perspectives on how combat in this title tends to be.
We'll be begging to be doted-on like this again in due time, surely, but perhaps not on our very first day here.

Now THIS is more of a proper steed! Far moreso than that wonky wooden horse, at least.
Leveling is super smooth throughout the early goings, in part due to convenient timing. Looks like there's a pretty sizable +EXP% bonus in effect for Easter Sunday, prime opportunity to make progress where we can.

>>2330243
Frustratingly, it appears Guilds under 100 Rating cannot be listed on the Guild Search.
How do you get Guild Rating? Having people click the "Attendance" button in their Guild panel. Despite having about ~11 of us present thus far, that'll obviously still take a while to qualify...
Failing that, toss anyone you see with the <Aerith> tag a line in-game. Everyone who's currently in the Guild has invite permissions, so you'll come across a way in eventually.

Making quick progress!
Some of us are already up to the Level 20 Dungeon. Will likely take a break once we've finished a pass of it (or at least I will anyway).

For those concerned about placing their Skill Points poorly, don't worry too much. You get a free skill reset with each Class Advancement (first one is at Level 30), and subsequent ones can be bought with Scrub's Tears in Terminus.
>What the fuck are Scrub's Tears?
Things you get from voting for the server when signed-in to the NoScrubs 'site:
https://noscrubs.net/iris/vote
(You won't be able to see this page unless you're logged in, obviously).

Mildly amusing fact about the voting pages: Iris is a 15-year-old game, and NoScrubs is 13-years old. There are no more servers left to choose from when it comes to Iris Online, and yet the backend requiring its players to upboat the server for Scrub's Tears still remains.
Very silly, but at least it offers a healthy amount of that currency for about ~3 minutes worth of effort.

First Dungeon down!
Made short work of the place, honestly, in large part due to the box of freebie Unique gear you get at Level 20. It's unsurprising for KMMOs of this vintage to hurry you through old content to get to the "good stuff", but it does take away from the thrill of dungeon-delving a bit early on.
Still, there's plenty more Dungeons left to tackle along the level climb; ones which will certainly pose more of a challenge than this romp through the circus.

Can you believe nobody wanted to roll on this thing? I think it looks cute, in its own sort of way.
Not especially speedy, granted, sporting only a +30% Movement Speed rate - quite lackluster for a mount. Still, it could make for a respectable fallback once my 7-day stallion runs its course.

It is that generic anime game but I feel like this is better than most of them. Early on it's a bit face-rollish and we totally outscaled the first dungeon with the level 20 box gear but assuming the difficulty curve catches up this could be decent bit of fun. There's a second dungeon at 25 so we'll see how that is.

I'm not sure anything is missing. Looking at the classes in guild right now there's only 2 rogues, 3 rangers and 3 mages. We've got plenty of fighters, warriors and shamans but unclear how many are going for tank or healer roles. Shamans and mages can both become healers or dps. Warriors and fighters can tank or go dps. Also unclear how necessary an actual tank is or if all warrior and fighter types can do the role decent enough.

Are there any MMOs around that have you actively hunt for diablo style equipment with random stats and everything?
I know ESO and PSO are like that.
I remember plenty of games that started out with loot like that but eventually gave up on the idea in favor of preset endgame items.
>>
>>2334862
I think more games fit that mode than don't, do you have any other criteria like age of the game? Of the games we've yet to play, PristonTale is the first that comes to mind.
>>
>>2334862
I've suggested it earlier, but Ultima Ruins&Riches or Memento fit that bill. There's a server here that's fallen behind on updates a bit, or I'd say the one for Memento being run by the fork's active dev is best.

Have you tried PSO2 or Tree of Savior? Those match your description and they're both reasonably populated compared to the stuff we play here.

If you're willing to consider private servers, phantasy star universe, anarchy online, and city of heroes are all fun and loot-focused, although they're best enjoyed with a group.

The gameplay is spamming the same couple puzzles over and over. There's no feel of progression and IIRC the monetization was awful so we probably wouldn't even be able to get a ship of our own in a reasonable time frame if it's even possible to do without paying.

>>2336780
Not that guy, but I've been playing for a while now. Been taking it super slow. I'm still level 38 Beorning, and a level 22 Captain. So far no class has really made me stick with it. Beorning is crazy strong and while Captains sounds fun for me, the rotation is so ass. I like spamming my skills and the Captain skills all have long cooldowns so the beginning levels you're kinda just auto attacking while using whatever skill is up. Beorning has a level 1 skill that is on a 0.3s cooldown which I like using whenever all my skills are on cooldown but staring at a bear kinda sucks. I'm not a fan of ranged classes either so I haven't tried them.

>>2336867
Grond is the EU server, right? I'm on Glamdring, and I kinda regret it. I would rather have went to Sting or Peregrin(RP).

Also there's a high chance they're not going to give away a free code this year. They'll most likely save it for next year's 20th Anniversary event rather than a weird year, like 19th Anniversary. They don't give away codes every year and do it randomly. They started giving them out on 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2025 only.
So yeah, it might suck for new players without the code but there's still a ton of content on a F2P account.

>Grond is the EU server, right?
Yeah. There's only 3 eu servers. One is RP, the other is so populated that it frequently has queues to get in and lag, so Grond seemed like a good pick.

I know almost nothing about this game but I always wanted to try it, no idea which class I'm going to go. If the other anon ever comes back I'll make a thread so we don't derail this one too much.

Do wonder if opinions of RF Online (and PvP-focused MMOs in general) would have been at least slightly better had we stayed where we first landed. Learned some highly valuable lessons about committing to decisions and general server selection very early on in the project, at least.

Might be a little off topic but i think its better to ask here than to make an entire thread over it since you guys played so many of these.

I tried all kinds of MMOs. From low effort SEA F2P grindfests to Vanilla WoW and yet, only a couple have managed to hook me (Tera and Toontown) but i want more.

These are my nitpicks:
>No needlessly complicated progression
>Side content that matters/contributes to progression
>Solo friendly
>Not a wiki game or at least have all the knowledgebase inside of the game itself
>No wipes if we're talking private server
>No P2W (duh)
>Either F2P or B2P. Sub is not out of the question but it has to be some amazing shit to keep paying
Thats my general needs but more will come to me as i discuss this but either way, im open to suggestions that fit these criteria.
>>
>>2338667
I wonder why Tera and Toontown because they seem two opposites. Tera requires quite a time investment while Toontown is very drop in/dropout.
>>
>>2338786
With Tera, i actually joined one of the best guilds around from /terag/ which i still interact with to this day. It was really fun playing with them when the game was alive and the time i started playing was right as a patch that really simplified gearing has hit the game so it all felt pretty nice to me. As for Toontown well, it checks most of my boxes, side content matters and its fun to do, you can kinda sorta solo things, progression is as straightforward as it gets with no bullshit that makes you run in circles. The nostalgia is just extra.

One MMO i considered picking up was Guild Wars 1 but it kind has me on the fence with how it seemingly leans more towards being a social SP game than an actual MMO and it doesnt seem to have anything going for it besides PVE challenge modes and PVP.

GW has three separate individual story campaigns with one expansion. If you complete the story content then you can do all of the missions on Hard Mode, in addition to "vanquishing" (killing all mobs in a zone) for your "PvE challenge modes". It's more a game about build variety because you can only have a max of 8 skills at any time, and even eventually putting together a party to conquer all the content. It's even getting official support again as of a few months ago.
>>
>>2338667
>Not a wiki game or at least have all the knowledgebase inside of the game itself
This rule out pretty much every mmorpg
>Side content that matters/contributes to progression
FFXI is one of the few games I know that isn't just a hallway to the endgame. Every few levels you unlock new things to do. The problem is that it's not a solo friendly game unless you play on retail, which is buy and pay to play. It's also a wiki heavy game.
There's also the good old RO, but there's not a single decent server left.
>>
>>2338826

I think Marvel Heroes has private servers if you're into capeshit
>>2338667
>>2338800
The first game that comes to mind is Guild Wars 2. It has a lot of horizontal progression and side content rabbit holes to go down, and the base game is f2p with no p2w shit in the cash shop.
Before I toss out more suggestions I have a few follow-up questions:
How much do you value the story/questing experience?
What kinds of side content do you enjoy?
Do you have any preferred settings or art styles? (high/low fantasy, sci-fi, anime, etc)
>>
>>2337107
In a lot of cases the server choice has played a part. Even with Iris the timing I think was pretty bad with the xp bonuses. It made the early game feel bad and spread out the levels of people who played early.

It works both ways. I feel insecure when i outlevel my guildmates. It feels bad to have a good rapport with someone and your level starts shooting past theirs.

You're describing the fundamental flaw with MMOs as a whole. It's impossible to socialize when your friends can play for 10 hours more than you and you never see them again. It's probably why most games have settled into the leveling->endgame model, because people will be stuck at endgame for weeks or months and that gives people with lives a chance to catch up and socialize with their friends. Of course, that model is also massively flawed because it removes all incentive to make a game that's actually fun while you're leveling - all the focus is on the endgame.

The only answer to this is an actually well designed sandbox where everyone can contribute meaningfully at all levels of experience. Or things like Toontown or MS2 having a large emphasis on minigames you can play with friends even if they've outleveled you.
>>
>>2340538
level sync is my favorite solution to this. keeps low level zones populated.
>>
>>2340538
Agree to only gain exp with each other, and the other person can either play an alt or craft in the downtime. I've been doing this for years. You can also agree on a level cap, which lets you group with other people but still stay at the same progression before moving on.

>The only answer to this is an actually well designed sandbox where everyone can contribute meaningfully at all levels of experience
the most mmolike game that i've played recently is foxhole and it's not even labeled as an mmo but it totally fits that description. i just miss mmo where i can do things meaningfully with other people where the people around me don't feel like npcs
>>
>>2340538
rift had the ability to boost your level to someone higher in the same party, or level yourself down to play with other low levels or do low level quests/content; and still most people dropped it early on.
>>
Uncharted Waters did it well because of its asymmetric gameplay. You could go out for an appropriate archeology/whatever mission that gives progress to everyone regardless of level and during trading runs, a higher level player can play the bodyguard while the lower levels transport the goods.

Sorry for the late reply.
>Guild Wars 2
I did sorta, kinda tried it myself ages ago but it felt so aimless and rough in terms of new player experience i was really put off by it.

>How much do you value the story/questing experience?
It depends. I mean its hard to invest into an MMO's story because you gonna have to keep moving forward to finally reach the most populated content around, and even if you take your sweet time you're stuck entirely solo most of the time which can be a bit of a pain. As for quests specifically well, anything that goes beyond "collect 50 bear asses" is good enough in my book.
>What kinds of side content do you enjoy?
I do like jobs, housing, pets that arent just a buff totem, vanity items/gear, side events in both PVE (like special dungeons/bosses, unique enemies to hunt down, betting on monster arenas or other things etc) and PVP (arena 1v1s, territory wars/castle sieges, minigames between players etc) The most common stuff like crafting and fishing are simply fine for me but i do wish for them to not fall into either completely useless or absolutely vital to progress.
>Do you have any preferred settings or art styles? (high/low fantasy, sci-fi, anime, etc)
Im easy going on that also. Most MMOs i got to play were hugely different from each other in that aspect so i guess anything (?) goes.

>>2346273
>AdventureQuest 3D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5L0YDXyGbw
Tab-target MMO based on the old flash game, using the same world, characters, etc. The class and progression systems are similar to other Artix games. Group size 5
>Defiance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3-0dUPkaIs
Sci-fi third-person shooter MMO that was recently brought back from the dead. The relaunch is using the 2013 version of the game instead of Defiance 2050, and the old DLCs were released as free updates. Group size 4, drop-in co-op in the open world areas
>Fallen Earth Classic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQG-UGuqVHo
Hybrid action MMO set in a post-apocalyptic Grand Canyon, often compared to Fallout or Stalker. The cash shop was entirely removed at some point.
>LaTale
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z42fFGasHw
2D side-scroller MMO like MapleStory. It's less role-oriented and has a lot of horizontal progression. The game has a guide to help figure out what you're meant to be doing. Group size 6
>Priston Tale
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la8aKoOk-7M
Anime sorta-isometric MMO with a medieval fantasy aesthetic. Grinding is the main method of progression, some private servers like PristonTaleEU have adopted the progression schemes of aRPGs like Diablo and PoE (seasons, item rarity, etc). Party size 6
>Puzzle Pirates
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M9etqVq-SE
Social MMO where minigames and puzzles are a core part of the gameplay loop. You can play solo or join a crew and fight npc/player ships.
>Riders of Icarus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BETEiQ5YgyY
Action/tab-target hybrid MMO that's often compared to Tera. Mount collecting and mounted combat are central features of the game. Group size 5/10(?)
>ROSE Online
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggaDPToaS-c
Anime tab-target MMO often compared to Flyff, has a bright and cutesy aesthetic. Group size 7

Inactive ballot means there are no choices left for that person's vote. For example, the inactive ballot on the poll is from one of the people who voted for Priston Tale did not vote for either Riders of Icarus or LaTale so their vote is inactive and doesn't count for anything when those are the only two options left.

I'm interested in seeing how much of a bootleg TERA knock-off it might (or might not) be, as someone who enjoys action MMOs.
We've seen this exact same sort of performative outrage over supposed poll rigging since this project began. [Game] wins, most are fine with it, but a small subsection of thread-goers kick and stomp their feet at their chosen game not being picked instead, and try to create more of a stir than is really warranted. Only real difference being it actually WAS possible to rig the polls for the first two months or so, due to us not finding a better polling alternative until after ECO.
Would have been cool for LaTale to finally get some screentime, and Priston Tale's seasonal model could have been well-timed for us, but they will both have their day further down the line.
>>
Is this really just a tera knockoff with no elins?
>>
>>2361375

Tbh I am not sure on Origins because they shuttered their Bless pservers and that made a ton of EXP and class adjustments so you could solo to endgame in a few days supposedly.
I'd go with the Russkies because at least it has a community and is closer to vanilla (i.e., a themepark of some quality)
>>
>>2361884
It's neither WoW nor Tera. It plays like a sideshow simulator. I don't know if it's just the lag or what but there's zero flow to the combat.

Checked Icarus Phoenix for about 40 minutes to make sure it worked, etc. A few additional thoughts:

- The launcher will start in Russian, but more importantly, you'll be asked to pick a server before signing in. One RU server, and two EU servers. It looks characters are shared between the two EU servers, so just pick whichever one has lower ping (Europe 2 in my case).

- ExitLag does not work, unfortunately. The game is listed in its database, but it must be pointing to another private server or something.

- Shortly after starting, go to the Game tab of your Settings menu, and under Control Mode, enable Action (Free Aim). Match the Scale slider to the same scale as your UI (do not use Auto UI Scale). This will make the game feel considerably better (albeit still slow initially).

- The character creator is one of those quintessential 2010s-era KMMO Create-A-Monster type deals with sliders galore, so you might want to spend a bit making sure you aren't a ghoul before going in. Or do make yourself a ghoul, I know that's part of the appeal for some.

- Names are NOT relinquished after deleting a character. Make sure you're 100% satisfied with your character's look before finalizing its name. If you decide you want to change your appearance and delete your character just a few minutes after making it, you will have to call yourself something else. Will be calling myself something else later this evening, rip.

It begins.
Will say, despite the very, very clear technical jank, the game does look decent during these setpiece moments.
Might be wise for us to just progress 'til the first town, and meet-up there. Seems like you're ferried along the starting quests fairly quickly.

Okay, the namesake gimmick of this title is actually pretty cool.
Anything and everything labeled as "Tamable" can be brought into your stable of Familiars, each one having their own stats and abilities. Familiars can either be mounted or turned into a Combat Pet by way of Pet Scrolls. Can even Tame rare/boss spawns, if you have enough Taming Points to spare for it (and succeed the capture)!
Pretty neat so far. There's some potential here for an interesting ride.

Appears there are solo instances to enter every so often throughout the main story. Comparisons to TERA and Blade&Soul continue to pile-up, honestly.
Combat is most certainly slower-paced compared to either of those notable examples of the Action-MMO, yet the potential for faster-paced attacks is certainly there, through this game's Skill Combo / Follow-Up system. Bit hard to tell when everything dies so easily in the first zone, however.
Surely we'll be begging for things to be nearly so approachable later on. Pretty sure dungeon-running is a common occurrence later (which would, again, further draw comparisons between the two aforementioned titles).

>>2365534
If you've got the coin, go right ahead.
Think "Stable's Closed" or "TouchScalyTail" were the two leaders. The latter one would work for the TFT nod, given just how desperately this game wants to be TERA 2.

Would double-take if someone who looked like this strolled up beside me as well, to be fair.
It is incredibly challenging to make a Fairy into something semi-presentable, so being a living Bratz doll will have to do. Not quite as unwieldy as trying to make most of the faces for TERA's Elin remotely functional in public, but still.
Ganbatte to anyone rolling a Trickster or Magician, you'll be fiddling with slider for quite some time.

Plenty of interesting things to be found in the capital city, including the ability to travel to the Bloom Dimension, apparently.
The Familiar Farm appears to be more of a midgame resource, allowing you to put your unused Familiars to work via long-haul gathering quests, the ability to level-up Familiars with Gold, a fishing hole (yet no one who sells bait for some reason?), and a crafting shed with nearly all types of tradeskills to pursue.
All mostly-nice things, somewhat dampened by the fact that the amount of bloom here is just ridiculous. Also the place is a bit of a dump, with piles of debris scattered throughout. Likely somewhere to visit later.

Break-time after about seven hours straight (close to 10 if counting matters in our previous title prior to coming here).

Definitely digging the Familiar system. The game really throws a TON of recruitable beasts your way, and it's real neat seeing how your shiny new Pets/Mounts compare to one another.
Only downside so far is the crippling lack of spare space for said Familiars, although I'm guessing that's incentive for people to pay-up and buy premium currency, or at least spend the scraps of it you gain from Achievements on unlocking more slots.
Combat's starting to become more involved as well, with various skills which inherently chain off one another. Apparently there's an entirely separate series of mounted-only skills as well, though I haven't had the chance to use any yet.

The game looks great for its age, using its ancient branch of the Cryengine well. Detailed shadows only render on close-up objects/characters, and pop-in can be pretty noticeable for background objects at times, but it's pretty nice.
Cutscenes are kind-of a joke however, and the voice acting in them is constantly cutting-out due to line timings not being properly matched for the EN dub. Amusingly, a lot of the same VA from TERA and Blade&Soul can be heard here, making me wonder if everyone major player in PC KMMOs throughout the early-to-mid 2010s was just drawing from the same talent agency.

All-in-all, not bad stuff so far. Does feel like it'll be a "soloing together" experience until later on, though, or at least whenever Dungeons start cropping-up. That can be a positive or a negative, depending on your propensity for worrying about needing to be in a party 24/7 to get anything done, which can be double-edged for these sorts of titles.

Got kicked from the game for some reason, so may as well take the opportunity to post a few photos prior to taking a little break.
The stature of the tall-legs is well known among the fae folk, often towering over even sizable fairies. Seems that isn't always the case, however, and occasionally you'll run across someone who looks like they were hit with a shrink ray with its dials set to [Max].
I love it when MMOs offer such (relatively) flexible character customization like this. Had to do a double-take in realizing it wasn't another Trickster or Magician standing next to me.

Can alter the graphics settings prior to starting the game via the splash launcher.
If that doesn't work, there should be a Borderless Windowed option available in-game, although it did take a few tries to get it to work. Quality Korean spaghetti code was rife during this very brief era of the Cryengine being used as a base for large-scale Asian MMOs.

Familiars scale to your character's size, and the smaller you've made yourself, the more pint-sized your once-burly beast will become upon being tamed by your hand.
Makes the already-small ones look absolutely comical when placed under the command of a Fairy or Fairy-like. Bit of a shame the full-sized things don't remain as they are - would've liked to have controlled a steed that was five times my size...!

Speaking of the Cryengine though...
There are several shortcomings in using such an engine for these large-scale multiplayer projects; a fact hammered home through the many launches and re-launches of another Cryengine-build KMMO - Archeage. But one thing is does well is rendering impressive scenery, and man does this game deliver on that front.
Really been dragging my feet through the early leveling climb, constantly wanting to stop and take photos of things along the way. It's nothing which puts modern vidya to shame, obviously, but there's a certain appeal in the "this will be graphics in 2016" look to the science-fantasy aesthetic.

A somber haze blankets this wayward farmland, overrun with wolves of both four-legged and two-legged varieties. Each being just as vicious, of course.
Annnd that's as far as I got before being D/C'd, just after thinning the endless pack. There's an Elite-grade wolf Familiar to be found in this place, although it requires a specific item to tame which I'm uncertain of how to acquire. Might just be a rare drop from monsters in the area, same deal as the spider back at the Ruins.
Certainly easy goings so far (especially with the freebie gear gained from your Level 10/20/[whatever] armor boxes), but that'll surely change in due time. The starting chapters of these post-2010 era KMMOs are always a total breeze, 'til suddenly you reach the midgame and are actually required to interface with the game's mechanics.

Isn't Eden Eternal just Aura Kingdom but with chibified characters? Recall reading something about X-Legend's games all being largely interchangeable copies of each other, just with different models.
This happened about a year and a half ago, but I vaguely recall Twin Saga winning the vote way back when, only for us to discover the sole private server available for it was virtually unusable, and we quickly scrambled for Aura Kingdom as a replacement because it was deemed to be nearly identical.

It's actually impressive how much worse Riders feels to play than Iris, despite supposedly being an action MMO. The gameplay is more sluggish, the leveling is less fun. The world is bigger but somehow less appealing than Iris's 10 copy-pasted maps. Mounts are massively fleshed out but feel worse than popping a Shushu did in Iris.

Iris's only real flaw was its awful leveling curve after 60, but if you made sure to do your dungeon runs with friends it was very manageable. Icarus feels like your average kmmo quest2cap slog. And as much as people rag on COLLECT 20 BEAR ASSES quests, it's really fun to stack 6 different quests that all want you to kill the same enemy and gain like two levels when you're done.
>>

Riders is a disaster already IMO it sucks.

I'm enjoying Icarus for what it is, as the closest thing this project will likely ever get to TERA or Blade&Soul.
The Familiar system is very unique, and it's cool to see the game commit to its central gimmick in such a major way. Having hundreds of tamable mounts and battle pets, all out in the overworld or found in dungeons for anyone to take (if they have the right items), isn't something I've ever seen in an MMO before.
Although I'll admit that Iris had a more enjoyable early-to-midgame leveling curve (probably because the server we played on had massively boosted EXP rates across the board, and was fairly generous with its semi-premium currency).

The thing stopping me from being as enthused about Icarus compared to Iris, despite clearly being a far more technically impressive title and having perfectly fine combat, is just how stingy Icarus Phoenix is as a server.

Won't deny, I've become spoiled by private servers generally being more lenient with what they offer the player compared to the official clients for these games, stripping away at least some layers of pay2win or poor progression which undermined the original. Yet with Icarus Phoenix, it really does feel like the only clear courtesies being given to the player are the Beginner's Package granted at the start (which /does/ have a nice flying mount to be fair), and the VERY small number of dailies which provide one (1) premium currency each; and the latter was apparently a feature already provided in the base game anyway.
Every spare Familiar slot, Talisman slot, Storage row, etc, is still out for your wallet by design - and that's not even getting into what lategame/endgame progression looks like.

Icarus is a pretty cool game at its core, and I'm interested in playing more during our stay. Yet part of me can't help but wonder whether Origins might have been the better server. Or perhaps it would've been even worse in its stinginess and we ended up with the lesser of two evils, who's to say.

It looked interesting with the flying and stuff but its just not good.

>>2379622
Wasnt that gonna win then Wakfu got rigged? Wakfu was good at least so rigging sometimes works. You just gotta rig good games.
>>
>>2379687
Oh is TERA/Blade and Soul not allowed or something?
>>
at least we have alle goonbaiting to make icarus bearable
would be really dire without that
>>
>>2379702
Too well known.
Then again, we've played through relatively well known MMOs before, so maybe someday.
>>
>>2379705
this. even if the game sucks, im glad we still our representative loli thot to see.

astroturfing yourself in a dead /vm/ thread like it's /vg/ is something else

I'm close to 24 hours in game and the thing that's kinda killing me is how much of a slog killing shit becomes after a while. After level 25 shit started getting way too much health, the amount of time I spend in an area increased a lot as well and generally, I don't care that much about a different recolor of a wolf or dragon.
I appreciate a lot the variety of mobs and visuals but holy shit these quests are fucking killing me...

i just like alle okay

this. i was instakilling stuff now it takes multiple whole seconds per mob. and that adds up.
>>
>>2379741
this is why I quit already. once I felt my character getting weaker the higher level I went the more it makes me not want to play the game. same reason I quit wow.

what punishment does alle deserve for rigging icarus?

Slight addendum to this post: There ARE a couple more niceties about Icarus Phoenix than previously listed, although they're each pretty minor and don't really move the needle on my overall opinion.

Voting on the server grants a spin of the Wheel of Fortune every ~24 hours, which drops a (likely weighted) random item to into your Account Storage. Said item can then be sent to any character on your account, and it'll land in its mailbox. These rewards range from high-tier Pet Scrolls, Seal Tokens, and Attack/EXP/Droprate/Etc Potions, to mostly-useless healing items (guess which is more common).
Additionally, unwanted items gained from the Wheel of Fortune can be converted into Energy, with which to spend on a server-exclusive shop. You only get 50 Energy per item converted, however, so even if you voted and spun the wheel every day, you still wouldn't get anything useful during our two-week stay.

It's not nothing, necessarily, but it's a far cry from the kinds of player considerations I've seen from places like TERA Starscape and Blade&Soul Shattered Empire - the two most obvious comparison titles/servers to Riders of Icarus/Icarus Phoenix. Each of which went to great lengths to strip-out many blatantly predatory designs of their respective titles, such as changing inventory/storage expansions to be purchased through small amounts of in-game Gold rather than NX, and completely removing item degradation/destruction when enhancing equipment.

Again, still keen on playing more of Icarus. But I'd be even more keen were its reins loosened just a bit.

Are we truly edgelords?

alle post more cute pics already

I can see that in this time of disunity, I am going to have to be a powerful and commanding voice to lead us.

I have chosen Saga of Ryzom. We will play that next. Cast your votes accordingly.

I think its shown that people right now want variety. I think thats why Toontown and Wakfu won too.
>>
>>2382554
Wakfu was a breath of fresh air, amazing what you can do with MMOs when you're not trying to make a wow clone.
>>
vote echo of soul
icarus into that would be the worst back to back selections in mmodventure history
>>
>>2383181
why would you want that anon?

if there's nothing interesting to choose i prefer the option that inflicts maximum pain on anons

don't dismiss Florensia Online into Continent of the Ninth Seal
>>
>>2374343
How do I vote?
>>
>>2379810
I don't think being a villain matters in DC Universe and in City of Heroes, the City of Villains xpac is merged, I think.
>>
>>2383591
Yeah back in the day you had to buy both seperately, then they merged it, then they added other alignments like vigilante and rogue and the ability to do alignment missions that slowly change your alignemnt. So you can go from full hero down the line to villain. If CoH wins I recommend we do that and we get to experience all alignment content.
>>
>>2383617
how open is city of heroes/villains compared to dcu? I tried dcu before and half the super powers on character creation were locked behind paywalls. was like a decade ago maybe

>>
>>2383638
Joined on Icarus, that means I will only be able to vote in the next game?
Also, how do you guys keep track of that? I need to have the same character name from the previous game?
>>
>>2383617
Das neat. I think a good approach would be to literally encourage rp, so our characters can have some sauce to go along with the raid.
Do villains kill on sight by heroes? Or is pvp disabled?
>>
>>2383658
once you get the ability to vote you can always vote.
>>
>>2383750
Yeah, but how would you guys know I played in the former gaemo..
>>
>>2383756
nobody keeps track, so its super easy to rig by just making a new char with a different name.
>>
>>2383756
You send your character screen to the listed email. When you get approved you'll be on the email list and get a link sent to your email everytime there's a vote. The link lets you vote. This means you must have played at least one game before voting but don't need to keep using the name going forward in othe games.

Yes, it is also very trivial to just swap to another name and get additional votes for rigging future games.
>>
>>2383762
Fair enough
>>2383829
I see, so I just need to sign in in the site and submit my Icarus screenshot there after we are done with the next game?
>>
>>2383862
Nah, the guy in charge of the poll will make a post with an email to send the pic too.
Read this, these instructions were from the last game.

MY boywife. Do not pursue.
>>
>>2383621
Well its a dead game it was shut down in 2012 and now it's kept up by private servers so all of CoH's p2w content is auto unlocked.
>>
>>2383688
Nah. Villains remain in the Rogue Isles, Heroes remain in Paragon City, Vigilantes and Rogues can hop between both. You can't select Vigilate and Rogue in character creation, you can only become one through alignment missions. Alignment goes Hero > Vigilante > Rogue > Villain or vice versa. So hero to villain and vice versa is four steps.

In terms of mixed content. There's an area called Rikti War Zone that allows Heroes and Villains to work together and team up, then there's also the Praetoria Zones which were the max level zones that came with the Going Rogue expansion. Praetoria is basically a multiverse Paragon City, if you know your superheroes its CoH's version of Injustice/Justice Lords. Again Heroes and Villains team up together there, and there's additional exclusive content depending on if you side with the loyalists or resistance. Then finally there's Pocket D which is a nightclub where you'll find the RPers.

In terms of PVP there are four PVP zones: Sirens Call, Bloody Bay, Warbug and Recluse's Victory. Basically if you enter the zone you're free to kill by the other side. In PVP zones Vigilantes count as hero side and Rogues count as villain side. Recluse's Victory has a bunch of objectives to take over too. The other form of PVP is arenas. PVP isn't huge in CoH desu and you'll rarely see PVP events but I did go to one once and got my ass whooped. The thing about CoH is that its purposefully unbalanced, some power sets are deliberately OP as fuck because that's the nature of superheroes, the guy with the bow and arrow isn't exactly gonna kick the Superman type's ass, making PVP not so fair. So it's not done often.

ONE DAY WE SHALL SAIL THE SEAS ONCE MORE
>>2383621
Lets just say there's a lot https://cityofheroes.fandom.com/wiki/Archetypes

this isn't even counting travel powers/epic powers/power pools. And not counting that the different private servers have added more powers.
