Is it still worth it if I have no friends? There's the implication Knight is going to hit things a lot better, and I'm concerned that the support kit would largely go wasted since I have nobody to play with

If you're in in purely for efficiency and not class fantasy, Crusader still does a better job because of easy access to holy element and self heals where as knight you are either spamming bowling bash or autoattacking and alt tabbing

Crusader is pretty strong by itself, it hits as hard if not harder than knight honestly, mostly because most of the game is weak to Holy element, which crusader has access for free.
The support side of the build can still help you, having access to Heal and Defender Aura is already a big plus, since you can use those for yourself.
