It seemed like early on in the series, the writers were making an effort to build up Goh's backstory and flesh out his character, but stopped after Sobble evolved. Just a guess on my part, but the less-than-positive reaction to the focus Goh was getting in the anime probably had something to do with it. But once Journeys was ending, the writers felt they could work in at least some of the backstory that they had wanted to cover earlier on, because at that point, the ones that didn't like Goh wouldn't care as much since the series was ending anyway.Part of me believes had Ash been given his send-off at the end of Sun and Moon as the Alolan Champion, and Journeys been a Goh-centric show with other supporting characters (perhaps a mix of new and familiar), a lot more could've been done with Goh's character and backstory, and the fan reaction wouldn't been nearly as divided and vocal, since Ash wouldn't be the main character any longer.

>>56541464The episode Goh caught Flygon was pretty good, too. It did a great job showcasing how far Goh had come as a trainer, in part by watching and paying attention to how Ash battled. It was also a great instance of Goh being a good friend to Ash; helping to lift him out of his slump by reminding him of something Ash had taught him about how you gotta just keep trying and not give up. Honestly I think it's one of my favorite episodes as it combines the researching aspect of the series with some really solid character moments. Plus some humor and battles. I wish more of Journeys could've been this good.

>>56574515Crow is meant to be Sakuragi and it does say he lives with his grandma and his parents, just the latter two are often off to work. So he has a closer relationship with her. As for surpassing the professor, it makes sense that he might want to surpass him in the future. He is very much into Pokémon research after all.
