The thing I hated the most about the Ash seasons is that as the games became more narrative heavy characters like May were latched onto him, which always ruined their game versions for me. I would have hated to see character like Nemona or Arven become Ash's companion because those are MY friends, not his.

And other than characters, there's also the fact that after Gen 1 you couldn't argue Ash was supposed to represent the games' protagonists, but as the games got more and more involved narratives you ended up with Ash just replacing everything the player did. Everything you as the player did wasn't treated as "real" because in the show it all went down differently with the REAL protagonist. Both anime have their problems but the old one was increasingly at odds with what the series became and it probably should have ended far earlier than it did.
