For those wondering why I couldn't trade between DSs yesterday, I managed to do it.
You don't need any wifi. You need wireless communication set to on in the device settings. The problem was that the game was asking me if I wanted to turn it on and I said yes but the game still did nothing. I didn't think it would let me access the trade room without turning it on but I was wrong.
Long story short turn on wireless communication in the device settings and don't rely on the game asking you if you want to turn it on.

Now I'll try and see if I can get the mystery gifts via the DNS... hopefully my phone can work as a hotspot.

Now, I have another question regarding the events/mystery gifts.
I know that in Diamond/Pearl and Platinum to activate events you must go to Jubilife city and tell the guy at the tv station "everyone happy" and "wifi connection" but are there any similar requirements for HG/SS?

Not necessarily, but if it's something desirable or rare, you bet you're going to get hacked trash more often than not. You can never know for sure. I once got traded a raidon who appeared legit, except for the ID 123456.
The only way you can be sure something on GTS is legit is if it has the pokemon go icon as the last game visited (the pokeball icon with a blue background, NOT the icon of the game of origin, the "G" mark).
