Catching up. I'm surprised at how not funny the body-switching episode was. Very low on shenanigans, Liko and Dot were arbitrarily cucked from the mind swap machine, and Carmine was really underutilized. Isn't Roy supposed to be a rambunctious wild boy? I felt like we got almost nothing out of him and Croc swapping bodies.They could have made a whole crazy episode out of it. Friede swapping bodies with Hattena, Liko swapping with Dickbird, Dot swapping with Cap... why are they so afraid to just bring the laughs?

With BF being hyped up by other Ashnime fans as a major achievement, and all I've read about the in-game BF- I had a lot of expectations.What did I think of it?First some background. Battle Frontier is, as you know, the post-game challenge after you beat the League and E4. Based, on what I've read they do a lot of interesting stuff with these challenges to keep it fresh and apart from the gym to E4. Like for example, Noland and the Player Character uses Rental Pokemon. But none to most of it made it to the anime. Which is kind of disappointing, but understandable. I was wondering how they would translate some of them to the anime. However, the answer the staff went through is a traditional 2 v 2, 3 v 3, 4 v 4. To me, it felt more like a gym run rather than a unique post-game. In short, I don't think it was a great adaptation of Battle Frontier.Now as a potential sendoff point, as in a point where Ash really does become the "Best like no-one ever was" in an about way, I'd give it a middle of the park 6/10. I didn't watch everything (only the battles) but I saw enough from what I saw. This was the Arc where his Treecko reach it's final form. By the 6th-8th Frontier included a pre-match interview and pre-match highlights of all of Ash's major and past achievements- treating him with a reverence comparable to a rising NBA star. And he gets to cycle through his reserves giving Past Mons one more chance leading to an All Starter Final Battle. Bloody hell, Ash even goes to a mountain for training/bonding, like something out of a Betrayal Fic- though he did it in a more healthier. Though all this could have just been the KantOOooo, FireRed and Leafgreen had just came out at the time of airing.

But the M8, at least had the grandeur of a Championship Tournament with all the Champions available, as well as the seiyuu having been called back for one final time. I've heard people say the Frontier Brains are comparable to the E4 and yet, they don't really feel that way in the anime? Not when Ash is willing to take them on with a Groovyle.

If you go out and talk to a Zoomer, I bet they would be surprised to find that the Pokemon games once had a literal gambling outside of the gacha games.But at the end of the day, if this was where Ash was meant to leave, and Ishihara had his way and sent him off here- with Ash becoming a Frontier Brain, would it have been worth it? I'd have to answer in the no. For the reasons outline above, the anime BF lacks grandeur and felt underwhelming. Not to mention, with the benefit of hindsight, it'd be a weird way to send him off which wouldn't have had much relevancy or appeal to future kids. Imagine reading the hypothetical. A character based on Gen 1 Red retired to become a mini-boss in a post-game challenge found only in Gen 3-4.So perhaps then, Gen 4 Sinnoh with the Hardest E4 and the Hardest Champion really was the best place to send him off? Or is it? That is a question for another time and a future retrospective.
