I've been mapping as a hobby for years and I'm still not totally confident lol. there are some that I'm really proud of, but then have imposter syndrome and get nervous about showing them off cause other people won't see what I see.
my process is to start with some kind of core concept or centrepiece to build around. like a river, lake, hill, or a building. or maybe a gimmick like a maze, or HM puzzle, or playing with elevation. figure out where you want to place that, and then build a rough outline of the geography around it. think about where you want trainers and items as you go along, and use that to inform you. like you might want to make a chokepoint to force a fight, or add an alternate path where you can cut through grass to avoid a trainer. and also stuff like little hidden areas to stick items. better to think about that stuff as you go to build the map around it, instead of trying to force it in later. also, try to keep in mind what the player perspective will be. if you're in porymap you can have a square that shows the player view, it really helps with spacing. always try to have a landmark or guiding path in view so the player doesn't get confused.
and then just go through and fill in details. and do multiple drafts. when I get "writer's block" I step away and work on another map, then come back in a few days and go over it again. it helps you see it with a new perspective. study official maps too, a lot of fan maps I think try hard to make their maps aesthetic and forget that it's supposed to be played too, and that a lot of the choices in official maps make more sense from the gameplay perspective.

as for making maps "meaningful", idk, I don't think every single route needs a reason to come back. for some you can place buildings with important npcs, or you could put hidden areas gated with HMs like surf. but it's not.a big deal if some routes are just for transit imo

Play through the shareware episode of Doom a couple times, even if it's just on easy. You won't get so much from enemy placements, but you'll get an idea of how to direct players around a space that is roughly comparable to something overhead.
Keep in mind landmarks for player orientation, entice players with a reward they can see but not necessarily get right away, and most importantly just test your stuff and make tweaks until it's fun to navigate.

At least in my opinion, the best gym puzzles are just iterations on the traversal challenges you find in the area rather than based on a theme or gimmick. Stuff like the ice floor in Mahogany and the strength puzzle in Blackthorn being similar to the ones you find in the Ice Path for example.
Assuming you are not coding an entire one use minigame or just making a winding linear path with some trainers, the Gym should work like any other cave or route.

personally I would break up the pathway into smaller segments to look a little more natural. and the diagonal pathway on the left could be awkward to navigate, diagonals don't work great because it's a lot of pressing up-left-up-left-up-left..maybe try to straighten it a little, or push the trees back on either side and expand the grass there?

I like the river and bridge. it's a good focal point and the basic layout is solid, just needs some work on the details.

I've also heard this but I've never had any issues stitching everything together. There was a project I was working on a while back that tried to have an old-school final fantasy feel with an "overworld" and towns you could enter by walking on top of the single town tile and all that. Some tips:
1) know where the player is going. If you know where you want the player to go you can plan what kind of routes to include. Ideally, having a minimal number of routes let you see what you can add or take away.
2) make routes organic. What I mean by this is don’t always have straight hallways or lanes cause that would be boring. Real terrain has growth or paths that suggest history or detail.
3) give an easy way to loop back. Reward the player for traversing your route by giving them a shortcut.

Kanto route 1 is great simple example of this. In fact, I would look at other Kanto routes and see how interact with each to get an idea for map design; the way routes loop in on themselves makes traversing the region interesting (diglett cave, the saffron intersection, the underground).

I thought that was supposed to be a yard, not a farm. If the player is supposed to plant berries there, it feels kinda claustrophobic. It would probably be a bit cumbersome to navigate. Look at the berry farms in other games, they usually take a fair bit of space.
In that case, you could probably make the farm bigger and squish the other houses closer together. That way there would always be a place of interest somewhere in the screen.

After finishing the game, im thinking of doing the 2nd run of Elite 4+Champion of Clover. So help me decide on a team for the challenge.
This is the box with my most leveled pokemon at the moment (+80 to 100). I can use Grindhaus to level any other mon, or at least just the +60 but under 80 I have sure; But to make thing easier I show this anyways.
If legendaries, either or both Clovenix & Heliofug if possible.
Only shiny I have are Fireshitre and Gampster if you ask, and could be valid options.

I think it depends, they put in 3 difficulty types and 3 level cap types that you can toggle. Just threw a collage together for you since the game explains them pretty well.

The game also has a Debug patch that you can use. I like using it to start with whatever I want and control shininess.

There is no real reason to whine about Roxanne when you have Treecko/Mudkip/Lotad/Seedot/Wingull on top of whatever he felt like adding in the hack as options for hitting rock types super effectively.
Looking at that movepools, Roxanne is just weaker overall since two of her pokemon lost STAB Rock Tomb and on Nosepass, the AI is likely to click that over Headbutt since its stronger by 5 BP after boost.

1st gyms being complete pushovers is honestly less common than them being capable of putting up of a fight if you aren't careful at this point in the series.

Funny you've mentioned it, because for helping and just posting an image from the doc, I got banned from their discord, got called a -phobe and -ist (which is funny because I don't care at all, all i care about is playing romhack with magical animals) and appearently others were gaslit about it.

It doesn't help that the core Pokemon overworld mechanics are stuck in the 8-bit era.
For example, field moves don't have to just be Game Freak's HMs. GF rehashed the same basic shit because they're lazy fucks. Someone could try something like:

>Each has its own qualitative effect
>The effect may dynamically scale based on a second factor, like BP or manually committed PP
I know stuff like this takes extra effort, but I think it's the next frontier for fan-projects. People are getting tired of QoL, story, and difficulty hacks.

>Field PCs
>Expanding reserve party to e.g. 8, where you can keep 2 extra Pokemon in your bag or with a traveling companion
>Having certain/all field moves be optional to progress
>Assigning compulsory field moves to common combat moves
>Assigning compulsory field moves to Pokemon attributes like height and weight instead of moves
You can keep going. It really is just a failure of imagination at this point.

Having some difficulty coming up with a town following this route. Previous routes and town were in a marsh, with the idea of the marsh subsiding into a meadow (pic). I've already done a forest-heavy series of routes and towns, so what would ideally be next? Savannah? Plains? This would be the late 20s of the level progression curve.

Not sure. I was considering a somewhat moderately healthy mix of basic types in the beginning before broadly spreading into the more diverse types, but I'm still on the fence about Pokemon distribution at the moment since I'd like to first finish the routes and then allocate accordingly.

I do plan on slipping in some hidden grottos that would have rare encounters not typical of the area to alleviate some type hyperfocusing, though.

what helped with mapping my region, was first I made a mock up map of the whole landmass in Inkarnate (you could just draw or use paint too if you don't wanna learn new software). a lot of stuff changed as I went along but it really helped me visualize what all the routes & towns would look like and keep the biomes consistent and realistic. but I'm also just a geography/cartography nerd so I enjoy doing stuff like that, I understand if you'd rather make it up as you go.

but that aside, plains/savanna sounds good. then maybe build up elevation into a mountainous area. but I would also think about, what kind of Pokemon are gonna appear at this stage of the game, what type the local gym leader is, how this area fits into the region as a whole, and also just want kind of map you want to make. the best maps start with a clear vision of what you want to make, not just trying to fit in a biome to knock it off a checklist.

People are going to care more about game feel and mon availability than whether the tectonics and weather systems of your map correlate correctly to that of Earth's.

A good point. So far, I started off deep in the forest region before transitioning into a rocky mountainside, that ends up being a rabbit hole into a totally new location that winds up in a marsh. So I was thinking something that would naturally progress from a meadow near a marsh, as mountains would be a bit of a ways away from that point on. Maybe a savanna would be best since I can shift that into a desert or beach? What do you think? I'll try to map it out beforehand once this particular nab in my head's dealt with.

yeah that sounds good to me. only other thing I can think of would be like a river or lake system. but if you want to make a savanna, I say go for it.

true but I do think it's worth putting *some* thought into the geography. it doesn't need to be perfectly realistic, but I think consistent biomes makes a region more immersive. sometimes when GF shoves a desert or snowy area into a map only to have a place for ice types, it doesn't feel great. but I think as long as you don't do anything too outrageous like that you're good.
like I said though I probably put more thought into this than most cause geography is my special autistic interest lol

I made a few changes to my map here. I'm working on a Harvest Moon-inspired game (Called Story of Seasons now, I believe) which means that this is going to be pretty much the only overworld map that the player will walk around in. Therefore, I probably do have to get it right. Tell me how and why this sucks, and how I can fix it.

it's kind of just empty. too much green space. normally I would say you should compress it, bring everything closer together so there aren't these big empty gaps. although if it's the only big map in the game, maybe you don't wanna make it too small. but you definitely need to fill in some of that space, maybe with more buildings or at least just decoration. try to make it less square too. like, give the beach front some shaping to it so it's not just a straight line.

Thing is, realism doesn't make a map more immersive since most people have no idea what the world looks like. Earth is full of outrageous landscapes people would consider unrealistic. Vibes are far more important for immersion and in a game, as long as the player is having fun they are going to be immersed no matter what.
People are not going to care about an out of place dessert or snowy area as long as they have cool pokemon to catch and cool trainers to fight. Likewise, people are not going to care about how thoughtful your region's map design is if the game is not fun.

idk if I entirely agree with you. I see people criticize the haphazard "theme park" nature of modern GF maps all the time and praise regions like Hoenn for having more realistic biomes. I agree that gameplay is MORE important, but I don't agree that realism is entirely unimportant. I think there's a middle ground you should try to achieve. like, in Hoenn as the example, the desert is a little out of place, but not so much that it takes you out of it. but if there was a snowy area there, it probably would.

fair. but I stand by it. the way I see it is, unrealistic biomes aren't necessarily going to turn anybody off your game if they're having fun. but, putting some thought into it can make a good game even better. I'm not saying you need to go as far as to sit down and map out tectonic plates and wind currents and shit, unless you enjoy that. and you should never let realism get in the way of making the maps you want to make. but if I notice somebody has put even a little thought, that's the kind of thing that takes your region to the next level. just my opinion tho
