They never invented writing.Chinese immigrants brought Hanzi over and the Japanese called it Kanji because their languages don't use the same sounds.But the Japanese quickly (?) released it was bullshit so 1400 years ago they threw away most of the Kanji to they just had enough to write phonetics.The reduced character set (Manyogana) was still a pain in the ass to use so there were multiple attempts to simplify the characters so they'd be faster to write. Two of these survive today (Hiragana and Katakana).Japan never totally got away from Kanji though they use it to delimit words. They don't uses spaces when writing so you tell where one word ends and another begins because words start with Kanji.Very tangential side note: the mythologized unification of Japan when it became a proper country was 450 years ago. They don't have good historical records before then.
