Is OLED really that important on a handheld?

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using it with a taskbar or internet browser but for playing a variety of games its perfectly fine.
is it possible to save shader and scaling configs in retroarch? Wanted to save format for NGPC and WS games so I don't have to keep on setting them up but can't find how to do it. My rg28xx arrived, I bought the orange colour and installed MuOS on it.>the prosThe color and texture of the thing is very very nice. The shape is nice for its size.It fucking TINY. Not very noticeable and it does away, but it’s retarded a quality issue like this passed control (lol chinks having QC).It fucking RATTLES. Oh god, it rattles so much, much more than every device I’ve owned, and I’ve had chinkhelds since the original Dingoo A320. What OS do you guys use on your RG35XX Plus?Hearing MuOS is the one to use?
Why does the xu mini m tempt me so?Don't have a retro handheld.Thinking if I did, up to/including 64 or dreamcast seems nice (I know xu mini m can't really do 64 and barely dreamcast), but probably only realy play snk arcade some mame and ps1, and 8/16 but games.May never actually really play a retro handheld if I got it, probably pick it up, look at a game, say "that's neat" and put it down. The $55 (before tax) for it make it seem a good price for a guy like me. Other "cheap" options never seem this low a price for me.$75 (before tax) for RG35XX H seems just to be too much for something I might not use. But the extra power might make it something I do use (considering hdmi out). But then, I have a pc...
>>11339215H700 isn’t actually that much better than rk3326. But the r35xxh shouldn’t be as high as 70. That’s pretty much the same price as anbernic’s 3356 chinkhelds. It’s also possible they just ran out of rk stock

>>11338614something that people don't realize is that the black bars from 4:3 content on 16:9 DOES eventually materialize as burn-in for oleds. Its why I think the retroid mini is kind of neat but wider oled screens for /vr/ is a mistake.
>>11339586Dumbfuck.
>>11339297>my eyesight is trashUse a cheap used tablet and a cheap telescopic controller, you'll have a big screen and it'll be cheaper than a big handheld probably.
>>11339603you can't prove me wrong
>>11339617Explain how oleds display black content.
>>11339623There was this burn-in test from RTINGs https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/permanent-image-retention-burn-in-lcd-oled>Black letterbox bars were displayed for almost 5,000 hours (equivalent to 208 days of continuous letterboxing). Some letterboxing is starting to become noticeable on full-screen slides, but not in normal content. As a result, we don't expect letterbox bars to cause any issues for people. It's due to the uneven aging of the screen. The black portions of the screen haven't aged as much as the rest, so those dark areas appear brighter in regular content. So whether you notice it is one thing, but uneven aging of the screen is literally what burn-in is.
>>11339623OLED burn-in happens with uneven wear of the LEDs.Since in the black bars the LEDs are completely off but the rest aren't, they will wear much less than the non-black sections causing uneven wear aka OLED "burn-in".
>>11339632>uneven aging of the screen is literally what burn-in is.When people say burn in they don't mean aging of the screen. They mean the much more specific problem of certain elements leaving a lingering image.
>>11339653its one in the same. When a modern TV runs a 'pixel refresher', what its doing is literally damaging the entire screen slightly so that your screen is uniformly fucked up and consistent rather than splotchy from the HUD elements and CNN logos.
>>11339586Thanks I find that oh so reassuring considering pretty much EVERYTHING I'd play would be in 4:3
>>11339656You are arguing semantics. But I am not sure if pixel refreshers bother with parts of the screen that aren't in use like the black bars from 4:3 content. At any rate Chinkhelds are ewaste and the other parts will die much faster than the screen.
recently got a Pocket 2S and I'm satisfied...for now. I like the smaller form factor, the 4:3 screen, and the android OS. Is there a step-up system from here that would maintain similar size but have better playback of gamecube and/or ps2 games? I've seen the retroid mini (I think it was called), that seems like a good bet, but curious if any others would stand out. Really want to avoid 16:9 if I can. 1:1 systems seem cool though. Only other plus would be if the screen wasn't a vertical screen turned sideways since retroarch is annoying to configure on such devices.

Odin Portal preorders are live, and once again they are eating Ayaneo's lunch. The only way that the Pocket Evo can come back from this is if there's a greater performance gap from the G3X Gen 2, or if AYN fucks up and the buttons scrape the casing like with the RP Mini. That or AYN actually ships some units with the planned 6600 mAh battery.
>>11339752alas, not a fan of the vertical.

>>11339845I'm actually not sure, because I couldn't find many comparisons online. I know the Pocket S was said to have the G3X Gen 2, but because of its design and how it suffered from thermal throttling the performance was said to be neutered.

>>11339893If you've already got a device that can play the games you wanna play in a form factor you like, you'd be wasting $309. I've got a RP4P, and even though I like the look of the Portal, all it would get me is better switch emulation, which I don't need and wouldn't use.

In terms of ease of use and compatibility with emulators and games, what are the best options for handheld PCs?
>>11339893If you can afford it without dipping into saving or credit, and you want it, then you're fine. >>11339997SD OLED. The only superior options are more than 2x the price, and the improvements are marginal.
>>11338614Oled burn in is way wqay less of an issue for a decade at this point. You need hundreds of hours for a constant image element to start to have retention issues with a constantly turned on display
>>11339980Can it do PS2 and GC?
>>11340076yes with the usual cavaets every handheld has with ps2 (you still cant play darksiders, nascar05,cmr05 and such which are unplayable on every handheld atm regardless of performance)
>>11340076I’ve tested GC thoroughly, and it works incredibly well. The only issues I’ve gotten seem rom-specific. For example, Simpson hit n run had pretty bad audio tearing. >>11340520The value proposition on the Deck is just too good. About the only reason I can think of to spend the extra few hundred bucks on a Rog Ally X is I could play my "totally legitimate" pinball game collection on it. If you set the LEDs to match CPU frequency, you'll notice they constantly stay red (max freq) while playing pretty much anything, regardless of whether it's a demanding platform/game or not. Worse, Trimui have overclocked the A133P to 2 GHz, which is out of spec (standard max freq 1.8 GHz), even though the A133P itself is an overclocked A133 (1.6 GHz).You need to deactivate performance mode and manually edit a bunch of files to set lower frequencies. Also, you have to do it separately for every emulated platform, since there's no one size fits all (some platforms can run well on 1.2 GHz max freq, but others need 1.8).

And can any of these handhelds keep the clock running in animal crossing when in sleep mode? my guess is no because the game was never made for that, but I'll hold out hope. >>11342302I'm digging into it but what it seems like initially is that there are disconnects between RA, shaders, and different cores. They have their own ways of expressing what to do and when, and in the case of ambernic using sideways mounted screens, what you'd need is an ability to rotate the coordinate space of the shader, so that it runs with 0,0 being mapped to 0,H (where H is the "vertical" resolution, aka the width of the screen) and then the shader runs as if it's a horz screen.

>>11344234If you are on a budget and only want to emulate old games and don't care about accuracy then an Android based handheld for you. If you want that and to play games in your Steam, Gog or Epic library then you'll want to get a deck and a high capacity SD card
After a few days with the 'eck. I'm liking it.LCD model because I thought the screen was going to be too big on OLED.Screen's a little too big for GBA and wonderswan, it's alright for SNES & PSX etc though, matched up to my AOV estimates and min/max/ideal sizes. If I had the OLED I think I'd probably use the trimui smart pro for GBA/WS.6th gen stuff I played seems fine 7th gen and some PC from that era depends on the game, had a modern game that has tiny text/iconsErgonomics, the big thing that put me off along with the projected fan noise and battery life. They're alright, I'm no symmetrical fan and thought the dpad would be too close to the edge but nah, it's actually alright, L4 & R4 could be farther up though imo and would prefer the steam & options button to be smaller next to the back/start buttons. Rear vent could do with being a little farther over starting on the 2nd slot but it's alright.USB port's in an okay position but it would be nice to have two, I don't have a dock yet so.Software. I'm no linux wizard and my journey back to linux has been ok. Flatpak sucks, that's for sure. I lost 20~ GB on my first run with emudeck and lutris.Lutris/Wine, alright when it works. I've had mixed results, have an older game which uses the registry to store settings, launch etc and it just doesn't wanna work. The hardware keyboard/setup is jank, if I only played games on the steam store or setup a bunch of emulators & roms in one go I could do without a dock but after setting up SSH so I could avoid typing on it at all costs while setting up older games, yeah definitely need one.Otherwise all good. Coulda gotten one earlier but it's filling that 6th gen niche at the right size that I was wanting. If there'd been a 6" 4:3 android device, I'd have caved for that way sooner than I waited for this.
>>11342086Hello friend. There is a god. He loves you, you only need love him back.
>>11339063The more I look at this the more I want it, SEGA CD and 32X are my favorite systems, it will be perfect for Turbo CD and (maybe) 3DO as well. Just needs a plain black version like the Arc D had
>>11344393Budget is no real concern, the idea is upgrading my Odin Lite to something stronger and can handle more games. The only real caveat is occasionally I do want to hook it up to a bigger TV and play with bluetooth controllers.
>>11344234I see no point in spending $300 on ARM. Doesn't enable any emulation $200 doesn't cover, the x86 compatibility layers are massively overrated and still need years of work, the only use case here is legitimately fucking gacha.>>11344409I regret not getting one of those for my 3DS sooner. Might have even stuck with the OG over the XL. >>11344424Not even 3356 does 3DO. I also think it's an objective downgrade in ergonomics, Saturnesque just feels better than MD boomerang.
>>11344443I wouldn't even say gacha as its always online and that defeats the whole fucking purpose of getting a handheld.
>>11344443>I regret not getting one of those for my 3DS soonerI got one off of ali for my OG 3DS XL at the start of this year, pretty good.I've only found custom grips for the "old" DSi XL, the mass produced ones like this I haven't had much luck finding when I've looked.DS & 3DS form factor definitely benefits from it, but I always found the DSi XL more comfortable to hold than the 3DS XL so i've never gotten one 3d printed.Worth getting one for a vita too if you've got one of them, massive improvement.
>>11344432Odin lite is like a retroid 4, no? So you basically have most gc and ps2 already. Portal will add some switch and bettet ps2. You might as well get a deck.
>>11344432Odin 2 Pro gives you more Switch and all PS2. No need for a deck unless you want better Switch or Xbox/PS3/360 emu as well, but beware they are nowhere near perfect.
>>11344452>I wouldn't even say gacha as its always online and that defeats the whole fucking purpose of getting a handheld.I can see the benefits of using a handheld for gacha depending on the game.I played nier reincarnation before it EOSed this year on the TSP through remoteplay and a steaminput control layer and it was very comf. Although it looked better on a 10" ipad in lovely 4:3. I'd love a nice offline version of that.I think people just want devices with nice screens and controls whether their games are old or new. I know amazon tablet man got pooped on for his shilling but 9-10" 4:3 is very nice at arm's length for 6th gen RPGs and maybe even action games if the controller was gud enuff. Also I'm sure you could use your phone as a mobile hotspot for online games right? I think most modern smartphones do that now. Maybe you could set that up and play FF XI or Everquest on the go without going for offline server installs.

>>11344537>>11343818>>11344539>3.7" 4:3.1Fun fact, It's within a balls hair of a modern 6" widescreen meme phone like the iphone 6 or an asus gayman phone when played in a 4:3 aspect ratio.>6.1" 19.5:9 is a 4.26" 4:3>6.78" 20:9 is 4.64" 4:3Admittedly the 2nd tier of hueg phones is a little bigger but a 6 incher in a sane size is cucked by the tall screens for 4:3 content. bought a gba sp from marketplace, the person had it listed as a 3ds, told me it was from her daughter and it had lost the charger years ago, but for 15 i thought it was worth the gamble, was shipped in an envelope with no protection, had to do the plug-&-unplug trick for the battery to take charge but in the end it worked fine, all the buttons work (up on the d-pad needs a little cleaning), the screen works though the right side light is not very bright, but again, $15 for a fully working gba sp, i can't really complain
>>11344573Ignoring the fact playing on a phone is a horrific meme, that difference is massive wtf are you talking about. Even just the difference between the 3.7" Mini screen and anbernig's 4" screen is shockingly big. I’ve been playing through a n64 rom set and I swear to god this has to be the shittiest console of all time. Even all the classics are clunky and unplayable. For reference ps1 has >100 games that I like and Saturn has maybe 20-30. I refuse to believe anyone can enjoy these games in 2024, even with the nostalgia factor. >>11345262Yeah, buyers on ebay are nuts. I've sold 3 handhelds there for more than I bought them, but I've stopped allowing auctions and just do a reasonable "buy it now" price w/ offers because it made me feel kind of shitty.

I'm too afraid to put stuff with nubs/sticks in my pocket.
>>11347178Get a TSP. The nubs are so recessed that they'll never get stuck on any pocket.
>>11347178Get a handhelds without analogs.
>>11347185>>11347178This. Ignore TSPshills like >>11347183. Sticks on these are horrible.
>>11347183This. Ignore this retarded faggot >>11347191
>>11347191So what if the sticks are kinda bad? At worst, that makes it the same as a held with no sticks. At best, you at least have the option available to use for games that need it.
>>11347195Then get something without sticks. You shills are so obvious.
>>11347197I like the smart pro, but I'd never shill it to someone that plans on playing stick games. These somehow feel worse than fucking sliders and have even less range. I get it was to make it more pocketable, but there had to have been another way.
>>11347197The problem is the pocketable non-stick options are all shit in terms of ergonomics, screen, controls, etc. You can cry and bitch about muh shills all your want, the TSP still mogs the ever loving fuck out of your nig sp, vertislop, and 28xx. Dumbass crybaby faggot.
>>11347204The 28xx is just a modern rgplus in terms of design. The smart pro isn't anymore, but also not any less comfortable than that.
>>11347057What is the smallest handheld that isn't a tamagotchi and what sort of power does it have.
>>11347271How small do you want it?
>>11347280Small enough so it's comfy in my pocket at all times, but still very ergonomic to play with in my hands. >t. 6ft chad
>>11347280No no this isn't to buy, this is just out of curiousty. Out of all the handhelds that are out there that can play games what is the smallest and what could it play other then tamagotchi type games
>>11347284Probably something like the RG35XX Plus/H. Smaller than that is usually pretty cramped.
>>11347286GKD PixelRG-NANOFunKey SGame Gear Micro
What triggers the changes in color of the analogs of the tsp? Why do they change?
Don't find the TSP sticks so bad. I use them even on platformers, and the only issue is that sometimes they get stuck on one direction and you have to let it go to reset
>>11347372For every emulator there is a config file with some color set.
Does the TSP run majora's mask alright?
>>11347374They're basically like the Vita sticks, not ideal but they get the job done. I don't hate using them. I honestly hate the feel of the Switch style sticks chinks have been using for years more, something about them feels terrible.
When will we see chink home console knockoffs or PCs? Handhelds are a meme because everyone just plays them indoors at home anyways.
Saw RP5 will have support for Linux, does that mean it'll be able to run shit like Majora recompiled and the Linux ports for Ship of Harkinian and Mario 64?
>>11347648>or PCsDo you now know any grownups? Most have a PC somewhere.
>>11347720I think Portmaster is already working on Rocknix for the RPMini so yes, it should run Ship and the Mario 64 decomp. Both Rocknix and Batocera are still in their early phases on it though, a lot of shit doesn't work yet.
>>11347648"Knockoff PCs" aren't really something we need considering you can just buy a cheap PC just about anywhere. Handhelds make sense because it's a niche piece of hardware that fulfils needs that can't be satisfied by other, similar devices, but a PCs just a PC.
>>11347648They already have them. But what's the point when you have other options?
>install muos on my RG35XX+ a few days ago>everything is fine>today play it for 2 hours, and turn it off>grab it after a few hours>it's hot>won't turn on>after a few tries it finally turns on>battery power is lower than when I last turned it offWhat a shitty OS, that has never happened on the stock os.
>Moving hundreds of gigs worth of rom files at a time to thumb drive so I can then move them to the deck>Having to do it four times
>>11347889what are you moving, your entire switch/ps3 library?
>>11347891Entire romset for SMS, Genesis, 32x, GG, Nes, Snes, N64, Gb, gbc, gba15 gb of Sega Cd200 Gb of Playstation games200 Gb of Gamecube and Wii games600 Gb of Playstation 2Breath of the Wild and Tears of the KingdomIt's taking an eternity
>>11347895There's no way you're playing all of that.It would take you hours to even boot up that many ps2 games.
>>11347895I've got Dreamcast and Saturn games too but I want to see how much room I got left on my 1.5tb card first
>>11345145f-zero x is the one game on the n64 that has aged well. mario kart 64 is ok too.
>>11347902MK64 was shit even back on release. X is pretty dull now honestly, GX is just a trillion times better.
>>11347897Fuck! I just realized I got my PSP collection too which is over 100 gb. I'm definately going to have to trim the fat
>>11347910Seriously bro, you've got what, 250ish ps1 games, 55ish psp games, 120ish ps2 games, 50-150 gc/wii, and literally tens of thousands of pre cd game roms. You genuinely can't play all of that.
>>11347918I don't intend to. I Just want all the options.
>>11347057ALL WOULD BE POCKETABLE IN CLAMCELL FORMAT, DAMMIT FUCKING UNCLE FUCK.
>>11348042SP is too fat to fit in your pocket. Clamshit is a meme.
>>11348052Never had a problem with it in my life pleb.
what's better for comfy couch multiplayer gaming with my pals (4 Bluetooth controllers) on the TV, Linux or Android? does android even allows 4 Bluetooth controllers at once?
>>11348056You will when the stupid thing burns down the shack you live in.
>>11348061I'm talking about the original, not the shitty wannabe hand grenade. The OG still rocks to this day.
>>11346801https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpcsSSs272Uhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NADjIc9uNkIf it (D900/SD845) can do Skyrim it can do Fallout 3.The sdG720/g780 (Samsung A52) is a comparable chip so it's likely something you could've optimized to work better.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq4YDXwrxjg
>>11348052I don't touch non horizontal clamcells, They are not considered. THEY AREN'T PERFECT CLAMCELLS.
>>11347918I'm the same as that guy, have to put my entire rom collection on a device. It's really stupid because as you said, you couldn't play all of it, even in your entire lifetime. But I feel like I'm missing out on cool english patches for Japan only releases, hidden gems etc
Fuck this winlator business, I'm getting a steamdeck.
