We discuss about our silly portable electric devices that are intended to play (retro)video games

>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/retroid store

>Before you buy
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering. You better have bare basic desktop knowledge on how to unzip files and put them in folders. We are not here to teach you how.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Gonna keep it real with you, the gyro on this thing isn't great, probably made worse by this being a handheld and not just a controller, so I didn't do gyro tests. For that same reason, tested the PS2 port of Shattered Memories instead. Also didn't have the chance to get to Revelations 2 cause Switch games are a hassle to download these days.

It is a bit early for such a slow board, but honestly as long as we've hit bump limit I don't really care personally.

Any reviewers try xbox on the r5 yet? Joey's switch and wii u videos are s little disappointing. I am going to tr h cemu tonight on my r4p, but some redditor claims he got hyrule warriors working on it while Joey couldn't get it running on the 5.
>>
>>11368939
Not the RP5, but someone did a bunch of tests on the Mini. It's basically identical specs minus 2gb of ram so it'll give a general idea what to expect:

What do dumb youtube reviewers have against the RG35XX+?
>>
did anbernic ever do the dual screen handheld or is it just chink vaporware?
>>
>>11369001
You sure it's original? Sandisk cards are the most pirated ones.
>>
>>11369494
shit dpad, or was that fixed in the + ?
>>
>>11369535
Yeah, the Plus has a nice d-pad.
>>
>>11369494
Doesn't really stand out which is bad for reviewers. It just exists and does its job.
Also people get filtered by vertikino.
>>
>>11369540
The thing is that they recommend the MM+ over it, even though the RG35XX+ is basically an improved version of it. I have both, so I can say.
>>
>>11369541
Is it? What makes the Anbernic better?
>>
>>11369546
>Better screen
>Better audio
>Slight bigger, so better to hold, but just as portable
>d-pad is further away from the face buttons
For me this was a big problem on the MM+, because I press buttons with the middle of my thumbs, and because the d-pad and face buttons were so close together I would keep bumping my thumbs, and sometimes scratching one another with my nails. This doesn't happen to me on the RG35XX+, since the d-pad and face buttons are more separated.
>Better shoulder buttons
Crash Team Racing is a game that makes high use of shoulder buttons, and the MM+ ones were awful, I had to hold them really hard, or they would keep "unpressing" and fucking everything up. And that's without mentioning how uncomfortable it was to press these buttons constantly on a device I could barely hold. I can play this game just fine on the RG35XX+.
>more horsepower
With this I can apply shaders, input lag reduction, run a few more systems, Portmaster, etc.
>Real time clock, and Bluetooth support
>"b-but Onion OS!"
muOS is getting very close of being as good
Now something I prefer on the MM+ is the battery lid, the one on the 35XX+ (at least on mine) has a slightly uneven bottom part, and doesn't fit perfectly, it keeps sticking out a little. Also, after a while I could hear and feel the battery moving inside when I shaked the device, I fixed this by putting a little piece of paper to fill the space.

NTA but how is a longstanding, reputable brand a meme? I've been exclusively using Sandisk for all SD cards since the early 2000s and they've never failed on me or caused any problems. In the early days they were so synonymous with SD cards that I actually thought "SD card" meant "Sandisk card."

The flop is not releasing. To be more precise, what you'd think of the "flop" as something worth considering purchasing in the year 24 + 2000 is never going to see the light of day. You see, Miyoo is more or less finished. However, they have a cult of plebbitors that are trickier to cash out on than raw assets.
So they're delaying the flop to build expectation, while at the same time tanking their stock. One good day, a massive amount of miyoo stock will be bought moments before miyoo flops start showing up on Ali unannounced. By the time cringetubers get their hands on what appear to be reshelled v90s with the worst firmware known to man, miyoo HQ will long have ceased to exist.
I know a pump and dump when I see one.

M22p by sjgam. Hard to tell if an acutal clone on the software side or another rk3566, but there appears to be a power switch like the other sjgam handhelds so porbably that again with 2gb of ram instead of 1.
>>11370158
Sjgam's history is pretty interesting. They started with an ultra cheap rockchip that didn't cost anything for a handheld that isnt too bad before receiving 3566's for ultra cheap in handhelds with inconsistent designs and psp screens. Compared to other companies, they shot up pretty fast.

Throw that shit out, it's going to corrupt on you in a few months.

To answer your quest: Google it. You can get full BIOS packs just by Googling something like "Emulator bios download" and finding links. There's a few open source ones made specifically for Retroarch otherwise just find a pack of all the BIOS files in general.

There's generally no 'need' to mod 101s as people tend to mod the SP to add a backlit screen and 101s are far more expensive on the second hand market.

Most people don't mod 101's due to the cost and there's no real need. We have aftermarket IPS screens now that are better than the 101 so people typically use the one they grew up with and reshell it with said screen or take a dead one and do the same. You can't really get OEM shells anymore and if yours has enough damage you may as well reshell it while swapping the screen out.

The equivalent best handheld for ~$20 from Ali. So probably the SF2000.

Amazon has to honor warranty policies to operate in the EU and there's no way they can meaningfully implement it for shithelds, let alone within the timeframe standard they've set themselves
so basically the "warranty" you get from them is paying for two chinkhelds, the expectation being that 90% of the time you won't need it to use it. And for the other 10%, when you send it in for "repairs", they just send you the second one.

I don't really like any of these kinds of channels.
It's a flooded market, none of them do a proper in-depth look at chinkhelds and so many of them oversell performance. I enjoy his stuff. While he has the same positive shilling of everyone else it at least feels like he's making actual content around it, with at least minimal effort put in. Also more/better videos about broader topics instead of JUST reviewing the latest handheld again and again. And while he doesn't criticize shit, I feel he does a good job at of explaining why he likes what he likes for roundups or post-release-window discussions of devices.

Just seems like he cares unlike every other one of these fucking channels.

You don't need anything more than a RG35XX Plus or TrimUI Smart Pro desu.
Any Emulators past PS1 suck balls and require more power, which then you are getting into Steam Deck territory.
>>
>>11372267
How does this invalidate the ~$200 bracket, which have the power for those tougher emulators but are still less than half the price and size of a steam deck? Hell less than a third the price for one with a decent screen assuming the pocket 5 isn't garbage.
>>
>>11372178

Honestly the 3ds analog slider would work so much better on these smaller handhelds. Playing 3d platformers with em unironically felt good. "real" sticks on hh that size never feel comfortable, even back when some would use the vita sticks.

I hate this so much, especially with Russ.
"yeah you're gunna be able to run any n64 on this thing"
>struggles running anything other than the same 5 n64 games everyone tests
Reminds me of how etaprime would review $200 celeron notebooks with 4gb ram and a mechanical hdd from Walmart and be like "yeah you should buy this it has no problem running pcsx2 at 4x res"
>>
>>11372291
My favorite is
>bro it runs well if you turn on high frameskip
>>
>>11372286
Yeah but people are retarded and hate it for no reason. Also there aren't a millions of them lying around shenzen waiting to be slapped on every retro handheld.
Also I maintain that the circlepad was better once it broke, and you just had a little nub you slid around. There's a lot of development you can do with the concept.
>>
>>11372295
I die inside everytime he whips out SA2 with that line. Only normies would be OK with frameskip, and they wouldn't be messing with chinkhelds to begin with.
>>
>>11372298
So like the C stick nub on the n3ds then? I wouldn't mind those on small form factor HH either

>>11372305
Nah, I mean the circlepad but rather than a flat rubber disc you have to push down on to get friction to push it sideways, you have a rough plastic nub that kind of sinks into your thumb so it's easy to move around.
The original 3DS circlepad would often snap off like this, and it actively made the console better except for the dust ingress problem.
>>
>>11372276
You can get a Steam Deck off eBay for like $300 these days.
Theres no reason for the $200 android phone bracket.

Rocknix for linux (Portmaster, faster boot, less input delay) or gamma for android.(Native ports, Easy multiplayer and achievement setup)
>>
Is there any firmware besides Lakka that just boots straight into retroarch?
I hate the other frontends
>>
Reminder if you're a dpad on top chad to get the RP5 because the 6 will have it on the bottom since people won't shut up about it and there isn't much else left to change in the next iteration to make it feel new.
>>
>>11372790
Rocknix would probably fit that bill best. I prefer Retro Arena for the saturation and hue controls, smaller volume steps, and generally less buttoned-down nature, but Rocknix is more visually polished and perhaps more user friendly. Retro Arena is basically ArkOS while Rocknix is basically JELOS, both still EmulationStation and thus ultimately very similar. Just be aware Rocknix apparently causes issues with the Android side on the D if you care about that at all. GammaOS is Android and thus doesn't have PortMaster, just listed it because it's a CFW that does exist.

Link for Retro Arena because for some reason it's not available on his site. The other two can ofc just be found on their git by using a search engine.

No, you may just have more important things to do. That's why I usually only game at night time. When I'm tired it's easier for my mind to get captivated by videogames, though I tend to fall asleep sometimes after like 30 min, depends on the day. Other days you find a few hours to grind in an RPG or play a few rounds of soul Calibur 2 or something. Its all progress. I was recently injured and I still have 5 days til I go back to work... And i still can't play videogames in the day time. Im Doing laundry, gotta clean my car, call my doctor/physical therapist, chop kindling, get groceries, etc... it never ends bro. probably on the stupid side of handhelds, but are there any Ryzen 6 (or more) core handhelds that are cheap and remotely decent?

>but are there any Ryzen 6 (or more) core handhelds that are cheap and remotely decent?
the issue there is 'cheap'.
Your options for windows handhelds are steam decks, overpriced trash, or underpowered trash, all with terrible battery life.
>cheap but still powerful
Retroid Pocket 2S if you don't care about ps2/GC being good and higher being nothing, Retroid Pocket 4 Pro if you do, Retroid Pocket 5 if you want a glass front.

I use my 'eck and Switch a lot. While I generally prefer to play on PC I like to relax on the couch, put something good on TV and play on a handheld. Switch is used for modern Nintendo games, 'eck is for retro, multiplats that run like ass or are not on Switch and PC games.

I think it helps not buying a shit ton of these handhelds and just settling on something you know you're actually going to use. Feels insane to me that some people have 5-10+ of these chinkhelds that all fit niche little purposes but play the exact same library of games.

It can do God of War II at 3x, it can run like 90% of the PS2 library with that power. Do people really care that much if it can't run a couple of specific games? Were you even going to play them?

>>11376492
>>11376503
he also complained about shitch emulation not being as good. obviously there's some meme games like dirge of cerberus that everyone knew would still be an issue on this SoC, but his PS2 complaint wasn't really about that. more so he can't run everything at 2.5x res, as most PS2 games have a vertical res of 448i, so 2.5x brings it to just over the 1080p vertical res of the screen. also that RP4P ran some of the games better like ratchet & clank 1.

The worst part is that he isn't the only person that says this, there's other reviewers that evidently feel the same way. Why can't we just have more handhelds with the Dualshock layout, because for the most part these devices are just used for retro games and nothing but. One of the main appeals of something like retroid devices is emulating 3d games, many of which are from consoles that use analog sticks. So I think it makes sense for the layout to favor them. With something like the trimui smart pro I find it more understandable for the sticks to be at the bottom because few games it will run need them

It's pretty good for pocketing. I'm not a huge fan of its more clicky dpad for platformers etc. but it does feel nice and is great for RPGs.
>PS1 and below
The chips is probably more than you need for that If you want to save some money you could get one of the ~$50 tier devices like an anbernic or whatever. They'll definitely feel cheaper and probably look worse, though.

It is comfortably pocketable but it's like, take-up-your-whole-pocket kind of pocktable. Not really an EDC kind of device.

Stick up top makes sense for when you are playing higher ended games like PS2, GC, WiiU etc.
D-Pad up top makes sense for retro handhelds like the RG35XX etc that can only really do up to PS1.

Vertical is nice if what you're playing doesn't use shoulder buttons (see: the games the DMG/GBC were designed to play)

Crossmix is pretty great. Yeah it doesn't look super slick because it's based off of the stock OS, but functionally it's pretty nice. It's got built in support for moonlight, portmaster (although many games don't work yet, library fuckery), a scraper, a bunch of network features like sftp and smb file sharing, a screen recorder, etc. And you have a couple of themes to choose from, I agree the default branding they use looks like shit. People are wondering why Russ is holding the RP5 to higher standards than usual, but considering its a $230 price tag (240 for the inevitable grip) that's pushing into "why not just get an Odin 2" territory. It's supposed to be a premium device with OLED, but if it can't do shtich then you're basically paying a $50 markup just for the OLED.
>>
>>11378173
You can get it for $209 right now and a $90 difference is not small. Also why would you need a grip for the RP5 when they're already built in? People wanted a PS2/Gamecube machine at around the $200 price range and this is it but now everyone bitches that it can't do Shitch. Everyone just wants more more more. Just get an Odin 2 and shut the fuck up. I don't need Shitch on my chinkheld.

only ports I care about are SM64, the zelda decomps and AM2R?

Zelda can have some nasty drops on RK3566, I assume it's the same there. SM64 runs okay without the opt-in render96 pack, but Mario and Bowser get new models for some reason.

He means more price to performance ratio and I kinda see where he's coming from. No matter the build quality, a t610 for 100 is retarded.

it utterly destroys h700 and rk3566 slop in that regard tho??
>>
meh gonna nab a chuddy v10 and rgb10x, they seem to be the only deals to be had in this "sale"
>>
>>11378137
I really wonder if that device will be using new sticks like the ones used the 406V, or if they'll still be using the shitty ones on the Cube.

>>11378165
Valve technically can subsidize production on the Steam Decks, but there's no way in hell that the Win600 should even cost that much when its specs were rough even at the time. The cheapest Ayaneo Air Plus blows it out of the water in terms of specs and build quality, and even though Tectoy's "lite" version of the AYN Loki uses the same chipset, it still surpasses it in terms of build quality and likely battery life too.

>>
>>11378509
Why wouldn't you play games just in original resolution?
Higher resolution is barely visible on a tiny screen.
>>
>>11378521
because the original resolution is 480i
next brainlet question (pls i hope it's n64 related)
>>
>>11378529
And what's wrong with that?
Looks great on a tiny screen.
>>
>>11378521
I'm pretty fucking blind and old, but 5.5" (4.5" for 4:3) is a pretty good. Nowhere close to tiny.
>>
>>11378536
rendering the missing 240 lines looks even greater
>>
>>11378541
That's not how interlacing works.
>>
>>11378551
explain to me how many lines is rendered in 480i at a time then
>>
>>11378554
On an LCD? All 480 lines.
Since LCD can't do real interlacing, only CRTs can.
>>
>>11378561
and for the final question, why is there combing (or blur) artifacts on the alternating lines?
>>
>>11378576
Because LCDs can't do real interlacing.
Now answer me a question:
What does all that sperging about interlacing has to do with increasing the internal resolution of an emulator from 480p to 1200p?

>>
>>11378636
I feel like the only reason people are giving it points for a "premium" feel is because it makes the device heavier and heavy=good. That was a thing with tv remotes, companies found ways of mixing and molding plastic that allowed them to make very light weight and very durable tv remotes, and they shipped those with premium tvs. And then they got a bunch of complaints that the remotes feel cheap so they still made them the same way but put weights in them.
>>
>>11378741
The RP5 is surprisingly light though. It's nearly 50g lighter than the Odin 2 Mini despite both being the same size, having the same battery, and having cooling fans inside.
>>
>>11378741
On the black one the glass kinda makes the old screen blend into it so it doesn't look like you have black bars when playing non 16:9 stuff
>>
>>11378741
On a device like this it's more about weight distribution than total weight.
Also glass front is a solid trick for "premium" feel. As is OLED, but that one isn't a trick. I feel a lot of the comparison's it's getting are just ignoring OLED but it's a big deal.
>>

Found my GBM charger while I was sorting out a drawer and booted it up. Forgot how 'nifty' it is.
Flash cart's seemingly not holding saves for Gameboy content and if I were to use it again I'd probably want to get one of those smaller ones as this one juts out a lot on an already-small console but it's a cute little device. I like that the GBC emu on the flashcart grabs the SGB borders.

Screen's a tad washed out and mine has a dead pixel, makes me wish someone made high quality after market screens for these things.

I want a non-jank Genesis experience. Should I buy the RG Arc now on sale? Or wait for the ArcXX so it can have muOS?
>>
>>11379169
muOS is pretty jank, don't let the shilling get to you, they only just figured not having to flash fresh on every update and storing user files on SD2. ArcXX is not happening also.
>>
>>11378451

I was thinking of getting it but with shipping and taxes it's about as much as a RG406V, which I would prefer cause it has a slightly larger screen.

Though I'm wondering whether the lack of analog triggers will bother me.
>>
I was waiting to see how the RP5 held up for newer emulation, but initial word is that it struggles with select PS2. Honestly I just want something for primarily PS2 play that is pretty turnkey and won't break the bank. Should I just look at Anbernig?
>>
>>11379259
it struggled with certain PS2 games because russ plays them at 2.5x resolution. Just turn down the resolution.
>>
>>11379259
>believing Russ, who admits he doesn't like to tinker, which is why he's such an Odin 2 fanboy

>>
>>11379259
Retroid's stuff is stronger and better priced than Anbernig. You could just wait a year or two more, or simply check which PS2 games the RP5 struggles with to see if you actually care for any of them. I imagine it should be able to run most worthwhile games well at native resolution.
>>
>>11379273

How would it compare to a 406V? It's nearly twice the price where I'm at.
>>
>>11379280
RG406V should still be a little below the Odin Lite in terms of power, while RP5 a bit better.
