>>11383927>just realized we got at least eight years of archived news
>>11383927>Classic Unreal games went freeware>we are allowed to host this installer, which will download the original disc image for Unreal Gold from archive.org, extract the disc contents into a folder of your choiceIf someone will ever ask me to describe "wow it's fucking nothing" meme, I will show him this.
>>11384005Believe the site got permission from Epic to do that specifically, rather than hosting it themselves. A bit queer, but surprising they let anything of the sort happen considering Tencent Timmy wants to bury Unreal.
What are the best Heretic or Helen mods I should look into?
>>11383928> Why map for Quake when you could map for Q2, or HL, or Unreal?Because Quake has unique gothic aesthetic with nice gritty pixel textures? Q2, HL1 and Unreal didn't age as good as Quake, because their graphics is more bound to their era, while Quake graphics is more like legitimate stylistic choice that someone could invent even today, just because it looks good. Basically the same as Doom (unless you turn on texture filtering which immediately makes it outdated garbage).> Making a shitty Quake map is harder than making a shitty Doom map. Making a fancy Quake map is much easier than a fancy Doom mapInteresting take.>>11383931> Being fully 3D + having baked lightmaps adds a layer of potential tedium that can induce frustration and procrastination. Oh yes, I see.> It also doesn't help that actual map creation isn't 'normal' 3D, being that you're working with convex brush objects that have depth you have to account for rather than flat planes. Can't you just map in Blender though and export later, bake lightmaps and put some triggers and it's done?
If you had to recommend a single wad/megawad to a newcomer, what would it be? An easy one? One with a lot of unique content? Troll them with Italo Doom?
>>11384019D2TWID I think is a very good one.You should probably clarify though whether or not the newcomer was filtered by Plutonia or not.
>>11384012>mapping in blenderthat's a special kind of torure
>>11384012>Can't you just map in Blender though and export laterNot really, because you have to export to the .map format the map compiler expects and that uses brushes. Everything you model then has to either be a convex shape, be split into multiple convex shapes, or exported as a bunch of unworkable cones for every face. That last one might be fine for scenery objects like a statue, but forget about it for a whole map.Using Quake's textures in Blender is also pain due to having to export everything from WADs while also keeping WADs for the compiler. You also have to UV unwrap EVERYTHING (at this point you might as well go map for Halo) and keeping consistent pixel density is much harder than a real map editor.Basically, there would need to be entirely new tools made to enable painless plane-based editing for Quake and similar games. Something akin to Source 2 Hammer I suppose.
>>11384019>what would it beDOOM.WAD, then DOOM2.WAD, then TNT.WAD, then PLUTONIA.WADBefore that there's no point in playing custom content. Then, depending on their opinion and what they liked the most, I would give them either Eternal or AV or Scythe.
>>11384019Machete.You WILL get used to berserk punching. You WILL respect the blursphere. You WILL learn target prioritization. You WILL deal with evil marines and afrits. You WILL engage with slaughtermaps (eventually). It's got a really good difficulty curve, is what I mean. Some of the maps are also gorgeous and they flow beautifully. If the newcomer got filtered by Plutonia they can just play on HMP instead.TL;DR: Machete is Scythe 3 in my opinion.
>>11384027>>11384031I see. I've been mapping for my (potential) game in Blender, and even though working with geometry feels kinda productive, everything regarding UVs, texturing, texel density is so time consuming it's unreal.> plane-based editingWhat does this mean btw?
>>11384019master levels of course
>>11384059
>>11384058you are better use blender for complex prefabs that you plan to use several times, like statues, ornate colums and bridges or elements of there of, since they can be exported to Trenchboom and copypasted all over.Tears of the False God uses this techniqe extensively
>>11384080Makes sense. I'm starting to wonder if there's anything in this mapping tech I could repurpose for my own game. If mapping texel-consistent layout is fast in Trenchbroom I could possibly use that, export to Blender, do some unique geometry/detail there, and from there export to Godot or whatever.
>>11384087You can use Qodot to convert Quake map geometry to Godot's format. I.e., you can essentially export Trenchbroom maps to Godot's format. Although, Qodot is still in beta for Godot 4.https://qodotplugin.github.io/
>>11384101Amazing, thank you!It seems there were some changes and there is alternative project that is more active:https://github.com/QodotPlugin/Qodot/releaseshttps://github.com/func-godot
>>11384090Me in the middle
>>11384012>Q2, HL1 and Unreal didn't age as good as QuakeThis still looks great.
>>11384123> Some of Qodot Community members may have some questions about FuncGodot: Why a whole new plugin? Why the rebranding? Why not just update Qodot? What does the future of Qodot look like with the release of FuncGodot?> There was a strong desire to rewrite Qodot from the ground up, due to some longstanding internal issues with the build process and its maintainability. There were also some questionably designed implementations that relied on either misunderstood knowledge or assumptions in the Quake map format and how TrenchBroom works with it. We knew the rewrite would end up completely breaking people's projects, something we had managed to avoid with every Qodot update published. We were hitting a wall with Qodot's tech debt, but we didn't want to break people's projects. It's difficult to change gears when you're far along enough in a production.> Another problem we were having is the question of transferable administrative access to both the Qodot Discord Server and Qodot GitHub Organization. While we are all maintainers on the Qodot 4 Repository, we are limited in how we can serve and maintain the Qodot Community without this access and as such cannot make any guarantees on the persistence or maintenance of the Qodot social and code channels.> So the answer to us seemed to be to branch off. Out of respect for Qodot, to avoid confusion between the two surface-level-similar plugins and to embrace the pillar of map editor agnosticism, we decided to rebrand the extremely heavily modified fork of Qodot to FuncGodot.> So what does the future of Qodot look like? Well, the Qodot Team will be winding down on active maintenance. Don't expect new features unless they can be guaranteed non-breaking and within Qodot's scope. Bug fixes are welcome, but we will no longer be actively working on it. Qodot 4 2024.1 is likely to be the last AssetLib and Release version of Qodot, adding needed support for Version 8 of the TrenchBroom GameConfig.
>>11384130It's a nice vibe, but implementation ruins it for me: texture smoothing looks bad and geometry is extremely flat compared to Quake.
>>11384146Textures without the smoothing here clash pretty bad with the "detail" textures. The woodgrain in particular looks real nice with the "smoothin' on".I can't comment on the flatness, they both seemed pretty even on that front though Unreal probably has higher poly enemies?
>>11384171I think that's just smoothing masking texture problems. The texture itself looks a bit stretched imo? I'm not sure what makes it look messed up. But that's why it's worse without hiding it. Generate proper textures procedurally and you won't have to fix them.> I can't comment on the flatness, they both seemed pretty even on that front though Unreal probably has higher poly enemies?Enemies maybe. Geometry immediately looks way more flat on every screenshot. There is way more volume in every room in Quake. Hell, there is way more volyme in every room in modern Doom 2 maps. In Unreal, just like Half Life, it's all flat boxes, rarely you see 3d supports and all those kinds of wall/floor/ceiling 3d detail. Now the screenshot I attach is ofc unfair example because it's not from original maps, but this mindset with ornamental twisted surreal 3d shapes was present in original as well.
Playing through TNT after beating Doom 2 and so far as of map 8 I'm mostly confused. Some of the architecture is neat to look at but the traps are so far kind of lackluster, a few chaingunners or imps are not very terrifying, not to forget the arch-viles with no monsters to res.I knew going in that TNT was the shittier of the two megawads but this is impressively meh so far. At least the wad has a useful waterfall texture I used once. Also what the hell is up with this 10+ minute post timer? Who is spamming on /vr/ of all boards?
>>11384214It's a wad from 1996. Plutonia is the only exception in whole 90s, that uses monsters as chess pieces.
>>11384214TNT has a lot of ups and downs, MAP08 I think is one of the worst levels it has, while MAP09 is one of the best. The post timer was initially tried on like, /biz/, because they had a GARGANTUAN problem with pajeet bitcoin scammers spamming the board (to the point that everyone on the board wanted to rangeban India), then mods started doing it on a few more boards, and now all of them, because it works well apparently. 10 years ago I would have hated it, but it's honestly just not the same internet we're on anymore. The timer has done a lot to curtail senseless ragebait spam, because hopping IPs, instead of taking taking 10 seconds, now takes 15 minutes, so ban evading shitters can't work even close to as fast.
>>11384236>wanted to rangeban Indiashould have done that too
>>11384005The permission to keep it up extends to the discs on archive.orgOldUnreal announced that fact before they made their own installers, although yeah it's odd that Epic didn't give them permission to host those discs on their own site as well. Would just be a stab in the dark guessing why, although the easiest answer is that, given why the games were taken down in the first place, Epic is just that lazy at setting things up while simultaneously not wanting to give full keys to the community, so they wanna do the least possible to release the games while wanting the original version to technically be untouched where it's primarily hosted.
>>11384019I'd recommend Base Ganymede. Solid Doom action, not to hard on a beginner.
>>11384236It's funny in a sad way how certain boards seemingly have a spam problem from a specific region.I'll stick to TNT, not like I was going to drop it or anything but I'll keep going to see the good bits.I'll do plutonia again after but I do wonder if I might skip the master levels. For some reason every time I've tried them I never feel compelled to do them all.Maybe it's them not being a true megawad? Idk. I should probably do the Dr Sleep maps though.
>>11384280There's good stuff throughout TNT, but there's also mediocre and bad stuff too, so don't feel like you need to force yourself. For the Master Levels, they are mostly mediocre IMO, but Dr. Sleep and Kvernmo's maps are worth checking out (except Mephisto's Maosoleum, that map can go fuck itself).
>>11384190>I think that's just smoothing masking texture problems. The texture itself looks a bit stretched imo? I'm not sure what makes it look messed up.It might look more consistent if I could also "unfilter" the detailed textures, but at that point it becomes personal preference to me with "filtered vs. unfiltered". I think games look better with it on the closer they get to 2000.>Now the screenshot I attach is ofc unfair example because it's not from original mapsThat and comparing Unreal to custom Doom maps is a bit weird, not gonna lie, but it did inspire me to at least boot up some original Quake real quick and it's kind of been confirming how I've felt.
>find this the other dayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLxuku32ZDM>looks fun let's see what's up>GZDOOM has some problems to start up>weird but whatever>first thing that i see it's a high res PNG god damn it
>>11384326Boy, you've missed a lot of really funny shit.
>>11384328oh yeah, thanks to work i been out of loop
>>11384302I agree on this particular example. Still have a feeling Quake use 3d supports, columns and stuff like that way more, but really I have to replay Unreal and do a more thorough compare.
I've found a video that showcases what hell you need to go through if you want to map for Quake in Blender:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymaQ6u2R8dQ
BYOC could use less self insert avatars
>>11384462BYOC could use less of a lot, feels like most classes would be better off as standalone mods
>>11384012>Q2, HL1 and Unreal didn't age as good as Quake,You're thinking from a modern perspective, I was thinking from a period one. In 2998, why choose Q1 over Goldsource, Unreal, etc?. Textures can be easily stolen and reimplemented in another engine.A mapping community needs people to develop momentum to keep gaining new people, and Quake spent a long time having its community stolen by fancier engines.
>>11384512>In 29981998, even.
>>11384512> Textures can be easily stolen and reimplemented in another engine.Culture and conventions imposed by engines are different and lean to different styles of mapping and texturing. Some of those styles of very old games are received better than others even in 2024, and that says something. But I don't know or remember much about Goldsource and Unreal. For me Unreal is a game with fun ambient jungle music and epic system of upgrades to the base weapon, and I don't remember much more about it because I last played it as a kid somewhere in 2000-2002. Original Unreal Tournament though I played even recently and I consider it aged quite well, but for me it's all about nice futuristic layouts and capture the flag mode working really nice. In terms of texturing though I'm not sure about its style being anything special and it seems currently people mostly play with some kind of remastered textures and so on, something that can't be said about Doom or Quake where people deliberately choose to play with original textures and filtering off just because they enjoy it exactly that way.
>>11384341Here's some funny stuff>mod doesn't have difficulty levels but instead ups the monster health on higher difficulty which requires you to melee multiple monsters without berserk or chainsaw>mod seemingly has multiple playable characters, but the only difference between them is the different max hp>one of the characters is "sissy guy" which the author included as probably some of sort fetish>mod also has a sprite of nude, tortured John Romero in it's files (head is from Romero while the naked body is taken from gay porn)
What are we working on today, /DOOM/? gimme gimme
>>11384618I don't even play Doom, I just post here once a year.
>>11384624Momentous day! I have caught you, now make a WAD
>>11384360>Still have a feeling Quake use 3d supports, columns and stuff like that way more, but really I have to replay Unreal and do a more thorough compare. So far seems like something that will be down to the wire. I'm not really into splitting hairs that thin so I'm just happy with how they both hold up.If and when I'm feeling real thorough, I'd also go through Quake 2 and see how it compares between the two.
>>11384582yeah, i will delete that now
>>11384582>one of the characters is "sissy guy"that character also had the max hp of all selectable characters, so one could infer that the intention behind it was telling the player he's a sissy for picking up the easiest option, but I suppose the author refused to explain that part on the forum. or if he did explain, it was deleted?also to me it's still funny that the mod was incredibly bloated with 4k texture files and flac music, which was completely unnecessary
>>11384692He has not explained anything. His interactions with the community are like he's larping some official company henchman. Which is funny because he is just a creator of a shitty mod which has ai generated content and his fetishes included in it.
>>113846924k ai generated textures and flacs of royalty free muzak, which makes it even funnier. This should win a mockaward.
>>11384658Yeah, you can see this even on this screen, if Unreal was Quake, that church would have so many supports on it and it has zero. I mean, maybe they wouldn't be rusty metal, but something else, but I feel like being high on Doom & Quake immediately makes me want to extrude a shit ton geometry on the right.
>>11384658> I'd also go through Quake 2 and see how it compares between the two. This one is a bit more difficult to compare because Quake is 100% dark fantasy, Unreal is scifi + some fantasy, and Quake 2 is zero fantasy and all HR Gigerish scifi horror. The only thing in common is some rusty metal. Could as well compare with Half Life, which I already said I also consider quite too flat in terms of geometry. Half Life is also different story because I consider Half Life 2 and especially Black Mesa to perfectly capture all good there was in HL1 just do it way better. I enjoy most of HL2/Black Mesa/Alyx content and never look back to HL1. And it's completely different story with Doom series and Quake series. I consider Doom 3. Doom 2016/Eternal completely different games that do not capture old Doom games vibe at all, I also consider all Quakes to be completely different games with totally different vibe.
>>11384779>HR Gigerish scifi horror>Quake 2I wish. Then it wouldn't suck balls so much compared to the original. It's like 2% horror, 10% body horror, and like 1% Gigerish at best.
>>11384789I enjoy Quake 2's weapons more than Quake 1's.
>>11384789nta but it was what they were aiming for, they even have a level where you can see humans being processed and all that, it just kind of fall short of that due to aesthetic and lack of level details and what not
>>11384803I enjoy how they look, easily one of my most favorite weapon designs ever. But gameplay-wise they're mostly not very exciting to use.
>>11384582>nude John RomeroThis is news to me, Jesus fucking Christ.
>>11384767>Yeah, you can see this even on this screen, if Unreal was Quake, that church would have so many supports on it and it has zero.It would also probably be a more "abstract evil keep/castle". That "something else" are the other details that helped you identify it correctly as a church.>>11384779>This one is a bit more difficult to compare because Quake is 100% dark fantasy, Unreal is scifi + some fantasy, and Quake 2 is zero fantasy and all HR Gigerish scifi horror.I'd personally want to compare the more objective details, what was possible graphically between '96 and '98.
>>11384831> objective detailsI feel like on objective level Unreal went for more flat detailing because it had different mapping paradigm, more oriented towards bigger open-air environments with particular rendering concerns.IIRC Quake uses some kind of tricky super-optimized subtractive geometry paradigm which allowed it to have a lot of detail at the price of sticking to small closed environments, sacrificing open-air and huge areas.
>>11384831> That "something else" are the other details that helped you identify it correctly as a church. It didn't have to be so flat to be identifiable as church. Here's how church "supports" could look like.
>>11383927>[11-2] Pina Colada 2 releasedThat links to the first Pina Colada. Here's the link to PC2.https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/149139
>>11384843It's felt the flattest when they're showing off a huge valley, but also hasn't felt lacking when the level is scaled back or showing off or inside.>>11384867I'm fine with the supports in the above pic, probably the "least flat" thing about that church entrance.

>>11384823Not just nude, but beaten, tortured, beheaded and anally impaled with a wooden stick. I can imagine the author yelling "WHO'S THE BITCH NOW, JOHN!" while making the sprite. Filtered by Sigil 2 probably.

>>11384981Shan't use indie griftware marketing termsand it also fucks with the archive changing it
>>11384985Wise.>>11384886That Quake glass texture vs Unreal glass texture is how everything Quake vs Unreal looks to me.
>>11384981Anyone who unironically uses "Boomer Shooter" to describe the actual classic era shooters is a tourist. That term didn't exist until the boom of Indie FPSs that took direct inspiration from the classics, so I'd prefer to keep that term within the realm of indies, thank you.
Thought of making a map based on the demo ST-NICCC because why not. Thoughts on how things should be done?>the starfield flythrough - keep it noninteractive or make it a fight in 3D skybox F_SKY world?>any ideas how to more or less faithfully recreate the 3D geometry from the main part of the demo?

>>11385094>>11385096Actually it runs on GZDoom. The demo's joke is "This is not a Falcon demo", as it runs on an Atari ST (an older 16-bit machine compared to Falcon, a 32-bit computer). Since I'm running this on basically the most advanced and feature-packed source port possible, I'm saying the joke doesn't work here.I should rephrase it I guess. I didn't mean to make people think I'm not using ZScript for this. Though this should be totally be possible to do in just ACS.

>>11385017They only took crude surface level inspiration from classic shooters, virtually all of them are bland and dull, and don't actually know why the old games are good.

>>11385713>came out WAY before Boomer Shooter was a termWell that's the thing: SW'13 is the progenitor. It predates the term, but it's THE game that galvanized the trend that directly spawned the term. It was THE one that everyone pointed when talking about how "90s FPS design is officially BACK" and how "we totally need more of this," even though yeah games like Hard Reset and Rise of the Triad 2013 predate it. Like if people wanna say that the "boomer shooter" term/genre is cancer, one should also look at its family history and see the tumor ridden pancreas at the start of the lineage. SW'13 is the big daddy.

>>11389058How up-to-date is OP? The video one was uploaded over half a decade ago so I suspected a lot of them to be outdated.
>>11389050The first game. For a sourceport, Nugget is a good one.Nugget adds some extra features, but mainly cosmetic ones (blood colors, fake brightmaps, etc). For difficulty, it depends, but if you have experience with first person shooters you could outright start with Ultra-Violence, because for the most part Doom and Doom 2 themselves aren't that hard, BUT... when you look at custom map packs, most of the high profile ones tend to be a lot harder, so never assume that any custom levels will be as easy on that setting. You could also save Doom's fourth episode for after you've beat Doom 2, just because that episode was added as a bonus for its retail release, and is in part much tougher than base Doom and Doom 2.For playing, mouse and keyboard is the go-to, but modern sourceports like Nugget and GzDoom have good gamepad support so you can play well with one there. There's no up and down looking/aiming, you'd use the mouse for turning only, and a built-in aim assist directs your shots upwards or downwards as necessary to compensate for that (with a really subtle horizontal assist), which is comparatively weird to all other shooters, but it's easy to get used to and it works pretty reliably.

So, I beat Quake 1 yesterday. Episode 4 is a disaster. E4M1 is peak fun - it has loads of quad damage upgrades, there's more than 4 enemies on the screen at once, you can actually move around and shoot without feeling like it would have been better if you had played through the level 7 more times beforehand and anticipating every enemy placement. Then came the Spawns and holy shit are they awful. Shub was also a major letdown, I don't know how they managed to make a boss more underwhelming than the Spider Mastermind but okay. Started playing Scourge of Armagon and Episode 1 so far was a blast. The inclusion of the Laser Gun was a genius move - it's strong, you get a lot of ammo for it and it's fun. I see now that Episode 2 switches back to the 'eldritch' dimension - I really hope that Cell ammo doesn't wound up being super scarce and that the number of enemies doesn't dwindle significantly. This expansion's first episode was the most fun I've had with the game so far and is legitimately super fun - I'll probably replay it. What are the other expansions like? Militaristic, medieval? Do they also have these new weapons from Armagon or are they different beasts altogether?
>>11389076of course it's child porn. what did you expect? Do not click this or any links in the OP, they are all honeypots and viruses. You can play doom legally through steam, just do that.

>>11389059> supposedly eastern european countryInteresting, thinking about it more, HL2 setting could actually be foreshadiwing of current russian expansion into europe. Like, streets are really more european, but it also features a lot of post-soviet appartment-complex style shit, and there are too much russian texts and streetsigns everywhere. So it could be like Poland post-russian occupation or something like that.
>>11389059> She's really bland and if hl2 had come out today she'd be a good example of a toned down sbi character that onions boy developers made bland to not ''oversexualize'' her.I personally don't like her, but I at least can see she's not deliberately ugly like for example Concord characters. I'd personally prefer oversexualized characters any day but I also prefer when those not oversexualized are simply non-sexy good characters instead of deliberately bad characters made deliberately bad so that they are not sexy just because they're that bad.
>>11389086>Do they also have these new weapons from Armagon or are they different beasts altogether? The expansions share nothing that isn't in vanilla Quake. DoE has alternate ammo types instead of new weapons.
>>11389086Arcane Dimensions? It has new enemies and new weapons. Maps are by different authors and made in quite different styles. I enjoyed all of them so far, but I'm rather omnivorous. Some of the maps feature very smooth custom scripting.

Iirc some advertisement / placard on a street view in a screenshot preview of the old hl2 concept even had a finnish word in it so I would personally think it's very baltic.>>11389120Yea fair. That said I never play hl2 without using that Alyx mod that keeps her art style but gives her large bust and shows cleavage.
>>11389140IIRC the textures for the gasoline pumps were sourced from some old Swedish or Norwegian ones or something. City 17 and the areas around have a strong vibe of just old Europe in general, primarily eastern, and I think Baltic is just about the most likely.
>>11389145> a strong vibe of just old Europe in general, primarily easternRussian signs suggest post-soviet. >>11388504IMO, Xaser's maps were mostly fine. The problem with LoR is more just that there wasn't really enough synergy between mappers, so it kinda felt like a collection of random maps with a story slapped on, rather than a set that was entirely built from scratch to have a consistent story. Episode 2 especially suffers, considering a few maps in that were clearly donated from other unreleased projects repurposed for LoR.
Perfect Dark is great and all but the level design is pretty shit. Levels are way too small and not enough enemies. Any idea why the texture became slightly misaligned at 1m3s? I thought the whole point of unlocked texture mode (and actually one of the big points of using Trenchbroom over Blender for example) was that everything gets auto-UVd and snapped to the global grid. So why in this particular case it shifted slightly? Author later uses some keybind to autofix it like in Doom, but I still want to understand why it became broken in the first place and is there a way to prevent it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTwe2lEu95s&t=63s
>>11391264Oh hmm, maybe it's alright there and it's actually broken on the brush above, and that one was placed outside of video. So maybe he just intentionally broke it in locked mode to show how to fix texture alignment in video.

>>11391191It's really not that hard to switch. I didn't map a lot for Doom, have only like 5 maps in total, I started with Slade too, and when switching to UDB I was uncomfortable for few hours I think. The most uncomfortable things were the basics, those that are used the most. Like, how placing linedefs works for example. Anyway, I liked UDB more in the end.
I never actually played quake until recently and I'll be honest I didn't LOVE itThe shooting felt bad to me and the spongy enemies are kind of obnoxious. And while I agree the game is very atmospheric and spooky I'm not a huge fan of the enemy selection too, you only fight guys with guns and dogs in one level and then it's just knights, these floating monsters and the ogre guys that throw grenades along with these tanky monsters that keep leaping at you. And I'm genuinely not a huge fan of traps or shit like how the game wanted me to go over a pit with only a narrow, curving little path to go on (and if you fell of you just get shot to shreds by a trap) and then spawned these ogres in my face when I actually got across. Then I got a key in the same level and the game just spawned one of these jumping monsters to ambush me and when I died I was just like "oh yeah? fuck you too". Meanwhile I played Quake 2 and it was a lot more enjoyable simply because the guns felt a lot better to use
>>11391539I'm not shitting on quake by the way, I still think it's pretty good but I don't think it's my FAVOURITE retro shooter
>>11391539Yeah, I think guns are the weakest point of Quake. I consider what Wrath (a Quake engine game) did is how weapons should have been in Quake. Sadly, I'm not even aware of any mods that bring weapons of same quality to actual Quake. But at least I know it's possible in the engine itself. As for combat, it's much better in Arcane Dimensions for example. It's far from flexibility and mathiness of combat of Doom. Basically Quake only can handle incidental combat, but in case of AD at least, it's better at that than Doom imo. It's just kinda faster and more deadly incidental combat than Doom and it has more depth. But there is nothing like slaughtermap crowd control or combat puzzles of Doom.
>>11391539>>11391561Gitgud at the movement and come back to it. A lot of the fun comes in dancing around enemies very fluidly and avoiding their attacks while constantly applying damage. Also you're supposed to use rockets a lot more than you might expect coming from Doom, so don't be stingy with them.
>>11390431I only stream when drunk (and if I feel like it) but only in finnish
>>11391576Yeah, I do wanna come back to it, maybe the shotgun in doom being this amazing and reliable weapon of destruction spoiled me a little and I expected the same thing here

Found this cool archive of Wolf 3D packs for ECWolf (and Wolf4SDL too). It's all set up in a way that if you have the base game, you can just extract a folder anywhere and drag the pk3 onto the ECWolf exe. Don't have to worry about having the wrong version for the mod since each folder has the right one baked in.https://dhw.wolfenstein3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=8418
>>11391796Zdoom was the thing that kept Doom alive during the 00s. Even if you don't use it, you should be thankful that it existed.
>>11391539The focus on tougher enemies for Quake's campaign feels "hardware considerate". I imagine Doom 2 would've felt similar if it was as "considerate" with its enemies, having a beefy dude or two replacing the imps and zombie clumps.

>>11385917>>11390502I don't know if I can agree with SW 2013 being the one who started the retro fps revival. I always saw Rise of the Triad 2013 being overhyped much more before that, Dusk blowing up and becoming even more well known later, and I didn't like SW 2013 as much as either of those, or even nu-Doom, so I'd still consider them better candidates. On the opposite side of the spectrum we have Wrack (which was in early access for a good while before the "full release") trying and failing to get any attention, but it could be considered another candidate by a different metric (being around much earlier).>>11390995SW2 has the best first person melee combat I've seen, but yeah, the gems thing gets too old after a while, and I think it's better to ignore it once you get something "good enough". >>11393475That sounds good on paper, but sucks in practice when you actually want precise movement and need to change directions quickly. I'd rather use a d-pad than a stick for movement.
