But is it hadoukenable and shoryukenable?
>>
>>11476297
That depends on how you see it. If the metal is getting hot then it is cooling the CPU more effectively than the plastic would have.

The arc is almost BEASTly, but you can tell jewtube fighterbros shilling don't play it long as longer as thier other stuff because they're scared of the pad sliding off. Anbernic’s just bigger. Miyoo was never too big of a company in the first place. Max never released a clamshell before, but he worked with a company on one. It doesn’t help miyoo didn’t use rockchip for the longest time after they messed up with the 2020

>>
>>11476968
yucky, your pixels are all out of wack from the nearest neighbor scaling. turn off the default gridline shader and get an interpolation shader like sharp-shimmerless-shader and then use the perfect_gba overlay for the bezel and gridlines, or just the stock overlay if you want the bezel without a grid.
i love minish cap, just replayed it a few months back. one of my favorite 2d zelda titles actually.
is that a 28xx? i love those, i have a 40xx h and it's really nice but sometimes i just wanna play on something smaller. i'm playing Monster Hunter Freedom 1 on it right now. my only gripe keeping me from wasting money on the 28 is that theres no solid black model and all the alternatives are frankly fuck ugly, they really shit the bed with the shell and button colors.

What shaders do you use on your handheld for CRT?
>>
>>11477041
performance-wise it'll be about the same but the Flip is inherently better because it has analogs, which makes Dreamcast N64 and PSP games actually playable. i got a 35SP back in March and realized to my horror that it was fucking useless for 3D consoles because all it has for movement and such is a dpad, which i either forgot or just failed to realize. i treated it like a paperweight while playing games on my Powkiddy V90 instead, until i bought an RG40XX H which has the same chipset as the SP but it actually has, you know, analog sticks. so if you're deadset on a clamshell, get the Flip when it releases literally an hour from now. i still can't believe they dropped the ball with the SP having no sticks. people said "well maybe it lacks the space for sticks" yet the miyoo flip is quite a bit smaller and has two. every reviewer treated the 35SP like it was the second coming of Christ. i think it's a useless piece of crap, personally.

>Playing DS games on a flip vertislop

>>
>>11477041
3566, so psp, dc and portmaster will work better. Same with shader/filters whatever the fuck their called. You'd have to wait, since miyoo's doing that thing other chink companies do and spike the price above what the chip is worth. So 90 for a chip better than the shartpro, but not worth that price.
>>11477076
The h700 is closer to a 3326, which at best is good for ape excape. Sticks are useless on 3566's but somewhat more understandable. Powkiddy or gamemt will save linux chinkhelds
>>
>>11477064
zfast-crt-geo-svideo. then i add another shader underneath by going to prepend preset > blur/kawase-glow which adds a really nice glow effect for whites and bright colors which happens underneath the crt shader. very soulful look

I play all 3 consoles just fine on H700, I'm playing MonHun1 for PSP at 2x upscaling with no frame drops right this second. some games will require 1x and some games will require frameskip set to 1, but otherwise its fine. Sonic Adventure 2 runs great on it. I was pretty certain the rk3566 was comparable in performance but maybe not.
>>
>>11477092
yeah but i don't remember what they are and it just becomes a matter of personal taste at that point, like maybe you don't like the spherical screen warping effect of the crt shader so you just change that to taste, etc. its not too important and i don't veer too far off from the defaults

>>
>>11477101
yeah i mean that's for shit like God of War, pretty much anything else I've tried to run for PSP doesn't have that problem, and again DC and N64 are fine so even if you have to sacrifice PSP you're still getting 2 3D systems that benefit from analog sticks.

You missed the news, 3588 became war drone fodder, that door shut.

>Rockchip does not consider RK3588 to be an “open-source” SoC anymore
>This section is not coming from Collabora, it’s just some information I got from a few trustee third parties and some speculation. It should be taken with a grain of salt, and I’ll update it if I get feedback from Rockchip or companies using RK3588. I was told Rockchip no longer considers RK3588 to be an “open source” chip. In practice, that means Rockchip no longer contributes RK3588 code to open-source projects (not sure when the TF-A code mentioned above was released) and they also decided not to sell RK3588 directly to SBC vendors. The latter is not a big issue, since they may be able to source chips from resellers, but it may increase prices.

Shader parameters. CRT shaders are inherently like this though, you're not getting what you want.
>>
>>11477151
if you're lucky, you can go to shader parameters in the menu and there's usually a parameter for brightening the scanlines, which is ultimately what is making the whole image appear dark. if there's no parameter then you're screwed and you'll have to try a different shader.

I'm the powkiddy insider. They already prebought 3588 in a lot, but can't acquire any more. They're considering the amlogic a311d2 which is a tad weaker, but I think it also has problem with heat generation. Powkiddy's kinda stuck atm.
Doesn't help the retroid's have linux. Another reason why the max 4 was halted was price. Retroid prices with their reputation and linux would be suicide
>>11477170
They would rather make a successor with better specs while still sell the x28 for cheaper. Problem is, they want to make an x18s successor first but still havent chooseed a chip. There's a ton of cheap options already like the snapdragon 750g which they're considering, but they could also get a deal from mediatek with chips better than the t820 if they wait. Thry could also just use the t820. Engineers are in pickle on top of thrm acutally trying to improve their android software

Oh come now, it's not that bad. Look, you can almost see the 'TM' on the Sega logo!

>nice looking shader, what is it?
It's 4 lightweight shaders stapled together, with the aim of being able to run on RGXX-tier devices while incurring a minimal performance hit in 240p games, but still look decent. Kawase glow, pixel aa fast, ossc scanlines, and zfast crt geo svideo, in that order. It's the Kawase that's the source of the crazy glow. Would be nice to find an alternative for it, but at the moment it's all I've got.

It can't handle SNES and PS1 without resorting to shitty stripped down emulators with tons of bugs, sound issues, and inaccuracy. Most games have stutter and run poorly.
If there's not enough headroom to run at least at x2 res at x2 speed, it underpowered for the system it's trying to emulate.
>>
>>11478257
>It can't handle SNES
the only issue i ever run into is with super mario world and that's just because of that stupid built in input delay that run ahead fixes just fine.
>and PS1
i have never had an issue with any ps1 game i've ever tried. i even try to run notoriously harder to run games like um jammer lammy and i still don't have any issues. in the case of lammy, the only issue you run into is a sound one that can be fixed very quickly by toggling a single reverb option in the core menu.
>Most games have stutter and run poorly.

Donkey Kong Country 2, Kirby Super Star, Mario RPG.
Games I played as a kid and I have specific muscle memory for, all of them run poorly, either from slowdown, hitching, or other frame issues. Other devices don't give me this issue.
Both SNES and PS1 have sucked up sound too. I guess that shitty emulators are running the most basic audio decoders to help performance, but everything sounds like shit on it.
It's the worst handheld I own, easily.

interesting. i am gonna take a look at these myself and see if i agree or not. but while i'm at it also curious: what version of the mini do you have? i have the latest version of the mini and i just got the latest revision of the plus myself. So far i have seen differences in performance between the two, mainly gba needing gpsp on the plus to avoid stutters and i think i feel better snes performance on the v4 over the plus as well. both are running the latest onion os so i wonder if your experience is dated or if it's still like this. i'll report back.

so i've tested on both the mini plus and v4 so far:

dkc2 - both handhelds play them at full speed with no hitches or stuttering from what i can tell. both running supafaust as default. played the first 3 levels of each, no issues from what i can tell. sound is usually the big tell with snes and they both felt and sounded fine.
kirby super star - now THIS you could immediately tell. the mini plus could not run it without sound stretching and you could immediately tell it was slowing down. switching to snes9x2005 plus core seemed to fix it completely. but thing that was interesting to me was that my v4 played it flawlessly. spring breeze up to the end of stage 3, no issues, supafaust core.
smrpg - same deal. swapping the core to snes9x on the plus fixed issues present immediately in the first castle, but the v4 ran it fine with no issues.

i dunno if it's a firmware thing or what, maybe they oc'd it just a little bit to get it working but my SMALLER unit runs all 3 of those games flawlessly.

i'm gonna test them all on the r36s too real fast and report back. but so far i don't think you're crazy, but my experience is showing that those 3 games play just fine on v4.

Got a question about shipping times, I'm trying to decide between a Retroid Pocket 5 and some Ambernic device and I guess time is the biggest deciding factor. Am I better off just buying a Steam Deck and getting it in a few days?
>>
>>11478457
>Is your r36s running actual arkos or are you using the stock card?
it's running a fresh aeolusux install. i had to do that because the particular r36s i have has a newer 75hz screen that if not flashed with the proper firmware, makes all games run like hot garbage because the screen doesn't run at 60fps natively.

not sure what's up with it. i even have all the roms on a second sd card. might have to migrate the actual OS to a new sd card completely. i got a couple, might fuck with that later.

I know nothing about ark, but can you switch cores? A handheld that runs port master would not have a problem with any snes game
>>
>>11478525
yeah it totally can. I am thinking it is actually an sd card issue. when I first got this thing I had to reinstall the os like 8 times to get it to work normaly, so I'm willing to bet something fucky is going on on the other side of it. i just can't be assed right now
>>
>>11478385
UPDATE on this btw:
i looked into overclocking the mini and mini plus, just to see if that took care of the issue, and it does. it's as simple as going into the retroarch folder on the sd card and creating a text file titled "cpuclock.txt" and typing a 4 digit number in there to represent the clock speed. on my plus i typed in 1800 as is the recommended stable OC speed with least amount of issue, and sure enough smrpg and kirby superstar plays fullspeed no hitches on the default supafaust core. can't say for sure how that'll effect the battery life but hey at least it works perfect now.

i appreciate you for even bringing the issue up at all since i really like this device a lot and i want it to perform as perfectly as it can.

>>
>>11478667
nvm fixed it, didn't realize the cores only change from "auto" when you specify which emulator first. that was a stupid oversight on my part. it works fine now. doesn't fast forward for shit, but there's no stutter so that's nice.

>I'd kinda like a 1:1 handheld but currently only one of the ones out there would actually be an upgrade in terms of power and all of them look like cheap plastic so why bother?
Well, it's nothing spectacular but the CubeXX's probably the sturdier build of all the cheapo anbernic stuff. No creaking, no rattle, just solid construction if the plastic feels a little on the thin side, yet miles above the RGB30's wet chalk and not crack on first drop thin (screen's probably biting it first anyway). Cube's looks more premium, but there's the screen lottery and control layout that ruined the entire thing.
>>
>>11478829
They do suck, but sticks recessed to the point where range is limited are even worse (Trimui shart) Powkiddy and gpd got it right and those were clamshells. Powkiddy’s even click
>>
>>11478920
Why don't they have circular cuts around the inside of the stick wells so that the cap of the stick has more travel?

Then don't buy a $200 system, buy a $60 system. Or if you're stressing that much, if you can't even figure out your own use case, then just install retroarch on your phone and use touchscreen controls and realize you don't need to drop a dime on retro gaming if you're not invested enough in it to know what form factor you want.

Should I get a switch 2 when it will be released or just get a handheld like the steam deck? I'm not a fan of chink handhelds, i could use my old android phone for that.

the question that actually matters, are the buttons less cheap and clicky than the anbernic flip? and is the battery heat sync grenade for the cpu?

Are you planning on playing old games only or new games? Imo a rough guideline would be:

>Emulation up to ps2/gc
Get a chinkheld depending on what systems you want.

>retro PC games up to 2021~
>indie games
Steam deck.

>pc games up to 2024
Rog Ally X.

Keep in mind switch 2 will most likely not be emulatable for at least a year or two, so you will still need to buy it if you want to play stuff day 1. Also we're nearing the end of the current generation and new UE5 games will probably cause even the Rog Ally to shit the bed in a year or two. My advice if you want to stay current is just build a gayman PC. If you must have a handheld then so be it

Fuck these things and fuck people who say that H700 can run Dreamcast in any capacity. It technically runs SoulCalibur at 50-60 FPS but the input delay is so high that 1cc'ing Arcade Mode on Ultra Hard becomes almost impossible. I tried several times, no dice. Booted up the game on my real Dreamcast, I get it first try while barely putting in any effort. Fuck this, I'm selling this piece of shit.

We've said like a million times RP2S is the lowest you want to go for DC. There will still be noticeable additional input lag compared to PC, but at least the framerate will be good at 1x. That said, I've sadly relegated most of my DC to my 'eck at this point because most 3D games look kinda fucked in Flycast without the Per-Pixel setting on, and even my RP5 unfortunately runs like ass with that setting. Maybe things fair better with Redream, but FUCK paying for the ability to upscale, which I absolutely want if I'm not playing on a 480p screen. Also VMU being stuck in center of the screen if you want to display it + not being able to hide those menu dots is fucking gay
>>
>>11479876
That works for every other Android emu, but Redream on Android (PC version is easy to pirate) uses some shitty jewgle services code verification that no one has been able to get around afaik.

I'm still having tons of fun with the telescopic controller my fiancee got me for Christmas, it's growing on me to the point where the D-Pad, which I didn't love from the get go, is not an issue, I got used to the feeling of it in my hand, beat Terminator 2 on Master System, and I've replayed Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six for NES since it's a quick and fun 15 minute run. It's so nice to play on a handheld, even if a big and heavy one, in bed while using CRT shaders, it's the best. I hope you all had a great Christmas and that 2025 is stellar for all of us! Cheers.

i don't recommend any of the mid-tier android devices that range between $120-200. they can't run entire libraries of 6th gen consoles like GCN/PS2 and it seems like the games that do run well have occasional framedrops and stuff, its not quite the ideal experience. if you don't care about 6th gen and up, then you're better off with one of the higher tier Linux handhelds, anything from the Anbernic XX series will set you straight and you'll only be using half your budget plus you get enough performance for nice shaders and overlays even if you don't care about them. if you do want 6th generation and up you'll want to wait and save up a bit more for a higher tier android device with at least an Adreno 650 which is gonna be Snapdragon 865 and better. Or you could wait longer and go all the way for an x86 handheld. I really can't recommend the Tiger SoC android devices at all, they're paperweights in my mind.

I'm just going to say something that's been on my mind awhile regarded crt filters.
While I like the filters for nostalgia, I remember being younger and having the thought that I'd rather see the image without the blur a CRT screen causes. My family got a lcd screen pretty early in my life, so I used both a lot(on the same day) in my formative years. Going directly from playing on the CRT TV in my room, to emulating on the family computer with a LCD screen, I definitely remember thinking: "I love how clear the pixels are" while emulating.

Just wanted to say this because I'm not so sure CRTs actually looked all that much better in terms of a "natural filter" type effect. I think people may be taking for granted how nice it is to see a clear digital image

I'm playing on a Vita games which I'm hacking on my PSP, so I'm switching between the two all the time. (This nigger >>11476360 has never ever held any of them in his subhuman life by the way.)
The only real problem is that the designers sacrificed the usability in favor of the looks, making the buttons and D-pad too small to use in an effort to make the screen look bigger. Legit Vita is full of Sony's anti-consumer bullshit, but hacking it improves the experience many times over. Unfortunately, the buttons can't be fixed and they will make themselves known to your thumbs even in a turn-based JRPG rather sooner than later.
Still, I'm buying Sony's next handheld the moment it's hacked to the point of running modded PSP games with cheats.

Functionally speaking RP4P gives you the full library already. Odin 2 is if you want to dabble in Switch, which is admittedly a good want. I hope someone restarts Android switch emu someday because there's still some games I want to play on my Odin 2 that can't run properly.
>>

See, for me I don't like the razor sharp raw pixels BECAUSE they look emulated. I know it's all ones and zeroes and dots and that I AM emulating them and that it ISN'T a CRT no matter what shader I use, but there's just something about raw pixels that just crosses whatever imaginary line my caveman brain has drawn. For me, an S-Video look is the sweet spot, where it's sharper and cleaner, but still looks like proper nostalgia-fueled retro CRT imagery. It's what my brain imagines my games could have looked like back in the day with better cables on a premium television set. 90's gaming for the rich.

n64 and dreamcast absolutely need at least one analog you swine. and psp looks great on my 4 inch 4:3 screen, cope harder. if you're gonna spend 70 bucks on a handheld that can only play 2d consoles you may as well get a 30 dollar linux handheld and be done with it

>>
>>11485023
I always disliked this argument (and that specific comparison image) because CRTs didn't even have a consistent look. Some had a heavy color bleed, some were sharp enough to clearly define individual pixels, some had different mask patterns to others, and that's not even taking into account the fact that the stock cables that came with most retro systems were composite which would never give such clean colors in the first place.

Modern CRT fetishists collectively gaslit the retro gaming world into thinking that retro graphics were these extremely fine-tuned designs that required a perfectly calibrated setup to truly appreciate when the reality is they were made to look good on whatever shit display you had available on you.
>>
>>11485626
>not 2S it's not available
Both powkiddy and anbernic have many handhelds but the ones that run saturn are a bit more expensive than the 2S.
ANBERNIC RG505 (Horizontal, $118.49 USD)
ANBERNIC RG405V (Vertical, $120.05 USD)
ANBERNIC RG405M (Horizontal, $138.83 USD)
POWKIDDY X28 (Horizontal, $129.99 USD)
Powkiddy RGB10MAX3 (Horizontal, $114.99 USD)
I thought they'd be cheaper at this point. Try on aliexpress, you may find the 2S. Also I wouldn't get the powkiddies due to cardinal snapping bug.

If you can't afford that then if you want RTS for cheap you go for the EZ-Flash Jr.
If you don't care about RTS then pick between the official Everdrive X5 or the knockoffs on AliExpress (Literally anything that's not the EZFJ), the downside of the latter, outside of the ethical stuff, is that you can't update it. Otherwise it's an X5 knockoff.

Before someone comes at me, my memory was faulty, you can't turn off "battle animations" but you can put text speed to instant and put other animations to "Skip Some", so pressing B does skip them. I just turned on the game and went through the tutorial as well, and even fucking up in the Drowzee step, it still timed well below 5 minutes between the start of the duel and picking a starter deck.

Retro games were different from modern instant gratification bullshit. If you come into /vr/ you should at least appreciate their jank a bit, not just use emulation speed up to get through it.

i think a few people will buy it, it'll get hacked to run a firmware that can play more than just atari shit, and then it'll get a bit more popular. not on the level of a chinkheld, but perhaps enough for it to be worth their investment

i dated a girl about 10 years ago who had a wii which i softmodded and put all the gen1/2/3 pokemon games on. she blew through them all and her finger was glued to the fast forward button the entire time, a crowbar couldn't have pried them apart. i couldn't understand it, she just completely skipped the whole experience. it was a bizarre peek into a level of autism which i've never previously witnessed. i can't imagine playing a game that way.
