So the flip is a flop then?
>>
>>11507843
It might end up slightly better than the 35XXSP
>>
>>11507845
What about the screen though? Also russ said the thumbsticks are like vita thumbsticks which to me are too tiny to be used for pretty much anything.

It's a PS1 and under handheld.
The sticks are good enough.

>>11507843

The sticks are trash and the screen gets a halo effect twenty-fold worse than the RG28XX due to pressure against the back of the screen that can't fix remedied by loosening the screws.

>>11507849
It runs dreamcast so no, they're not good enough.

Okay, so here's my dilema.
I'm playing SNES games at 960 x 720 which is a 240p integer, but my scanline shaders get fucked up like they're not aligning with the pixels.
>>
Brickbros, is the dpad fatiguing or have you had no issues?
>>
>>11507851
Is it all the screens or typical chink lottery?
>>
>>11507919
Assuming it’s the same dpad from the shartpro, that dpad’s good for most platformers but shit for fighting games and spelunky.
>>
I'm just going to wait for the Legion Go 2 to come out. It will be able to emulate everything up to and including PS3 (not retro at the moment but whatever) and that OLED screen will be amazing.

It's the tendie console of chinkhelds in that it's functional but every redditor into chinkhelds is only into this or the Analogue Pocket, while there are several chinkhelds out there that are the same thing but better or are just better. MM+ isn't bad, it just isn't the best and isn't really worth the praise.

Nietzsche said the strong man is made sick in a society that values conformity, mediocrity, and slave morality over rugged individualism. This is but another example of a sick man seeking an outlet for his natural creative, individualistic drive. Yet, without a sense of purpose, he is trapped in a kind of purgatory that exists within the chaos of the eternal struggle between Apollonian and Dionysian forces. His natural instincts to analyze, rationalize and understand are instead directed towards satisfying his most primal desires. He is captured by the coom-creativity cycle.
>>
>>11508207
this pretty much put me off of MinUI since I have full romsets for all cartridge based tendie/sega systems and it's a hassle trying to navigate to find one game I know I wanna play. you can actually just make a Favorites folder in each of your rom folders and have it that way but I don't think MinUI has a file manager so you'd have to do this on a computer every time you wanna favorite a game.

Alright, I've gone about as far as I think I can go fiddling with this thing here, I can call this shader project a wrap for now. For the anon who asked last thread >>11501401 and for anyone else who might be interested, here you go:

https://files.catbox.moe/7z51n2.zip

This was thrown together in Knulli, so these glslp files will be ready to go for anyone using that OS. They may work as-is on any fork of Batocera as well, if the file structure is the same). I'll have instructions on putting this together yourself in Retroarch in a follow-up post.

What this isn't meant to be: the world's greatest, most accurate CRT shader for high-end PCs using 4K displays
What this IS meant to be: A passable non-integer CRT shader stack with curvature, bloom, and scanlines, comprised of common existing shaders that can be found on every Retroarch installation under the sun, and that causes as close to no performance impact as possible, all meant for budget PS1-and-below retro handhelds, especially with 480p screens. There are two versions; the composite version adds convergence for pixel blending and is the one in these screengrabs, the sharp version substitutes this with an interpolation filter for those who like CRT shaders but would rather they weren't so damn blurry. It has its weaknesses, but overall I like it, and I hope others will too.
>>
Can you even auto-update minui or do you have to reflash the card every single time?
>>
File: Fullscreen.png (49 KB, 948x447)
49 KB
49 KB PNG
>>11508574
The stack goes as follows, start from the top and then append in order:

Blurs > kawase_glow
Misc > image-adjustment
Misc > convergence (for pixel blending) OR interpolation > sharp-bilinear simple (for sharper image)
Scanlines > ossc
CRT > zfast_crt_geo_svideo

Go down to the shaders and make sure that the shader filter for convergence or sharp bilinear, whichever you choose, is set to Linear rather than Nearest. Then set the following parameters:
Target Gamma 2.30
Monitor Gamma 2.10
Saturation 1.10
Contrast 1.15
Luminance 0.70
Black Level 0.05
Brightness Boost 0.15
Scanline Amount 12.00
Mask Effect Amount 0.15

And if you're using the convergence shader, set these as well:
Convergence Overall Strength 0.50
Convergence Red Horiz 1.00
Convergence Red Vert 0.00
Convergence Green Horiz 1.00
Convergence Green Vert 0.00
Convergence Blue Horiz 1.00
Convergence Blue Vert 0.00

And lastly, hopefully, have fun!
>>
>>11508587
Oops, forgot the context for the image. The ossc scanline shader likes to set the image to integer scaling. To force it to non-integer fullscreen, save the shader file and then insert the following text right before the ossc shader.

Okay so we all know specs are constantly improving and that even powerful hardware might have issues with ps2, gamecube, saturn... So if you consider all that can run ps1, n64 and nintendo ds quite well (instead of focusing solely on the powerhouses that can imperfectly run the more demanding systems), which devices would you say are the closest to perfection in terms of form, durability, size, quality of the buttons, (lack of) heat generation, etc?

People talk about CRT "accuracy", I'm not interested in accuracy, I had a looot of really shitty CRTs over the year, my pops was an amateur electronics guy and would take peoples' broken ones and fix them so all my childhood TVs were someone else's busted up handmedown crap. And those gleaming blurry phosphers gleaming like jewels in a treasure box are closer to the feel that I remember and love spiritually than some autist with a ruler and a magnifying glass going over each pixel with a fine-tooth comb lisping UH AKSHUALLY THIS APERTURE GRILLE IS NOTHING LIKE THE SONY TRINITRON V4371ASSFUCK FROM 1998 RELEASED ONLY IN MALAYSIA. UPDATE: The reason I provided a Knulli version, but only instructions for everyone not using Knulli, is because that's where I made this preset, and one of Knulli's quirks is that it REALLY doesn't like you messing with its internal folders. So if I tried saving this preset in the regular RA shaders folder, it would get deleted upon exiting my game. I had to navigate over to my SD card and save these presets there, meaning that the preset itself then has to refer to the internal storage and navigate to the shaders folder to use them. That's why those glsp files would only work with Knulli/Batocera. However, using the enormous power of my brain, I have determined that I can simply create these presets on literally any other device running Retroarch that DOESN'T automatically delete your files if you save them wrong, so now I have versions that should work on most any other Retroarch device, assuming your root shader folder has two subfolder that split GLSL and Slang shaders, and now no one has to spend the time piecing this thing together.

So, if your handheld has Knulli installed, use these
https://files.catbox.moe/7z51n2.zip

If you're running Retroarch on anything else, use these
https://files.catbox.moe/nkmf4q.zip

>>11509014
I actually did have simple presets enabled on all of these, that's how they came out anyway.

>>11509105
Agreed. Nothing wrong with preferring it the other way, but I'll keep my slightly smudgy bloom shader, thank you very much

>>11509127
I hope you like it, anon.
>>
>>11509191
I noticed that the shader locations all start with "../../usr", I'm pretty sure those double periods are telling it to go up two folders, where it then redirects to the internal storage. Try making a shaders folder on the root of your SD card and putting them there, that should do the trick. Or edit it in a text editor and remove one set of the periods on each shader layer, so they all start with just "../usr".

>>11509161
You have to load it from your SD card. Make a shaders folder on the root of your card, then when you go to load your shader preset, you have to go up several directories from the RA shader folder all the way to the base directory which is just "/". Then go into the userdata folder, that's your SD card, then you can go into the shaders folder and load the preset from there. It's annoying, but if you like the shader and want to keep it, you can just set it as a core/content directory preset and it'll load itself just fine, so you won't have to keep navigating over every single time.

If you had just looked at the thread you'd find >>11507851. If you looked at the last thread you'd see >>11497176. It has quality control issues, the thumbsticks are obviously not the best, and the only thing it really offers over the 35XX-SP is better performance on N64 and DC and I guess better PS1 controls if you want hand cramps for $20 more. You also don't have something like Knulli to use in terms of CFW. There's also no telling on the hinges on either of these things.

It's not like the SP is without flaws either because even the revision uses really cheap fish paper to solve the heating issue, some people have poor seating on the screen forcing them push on the screen, and the start and select buttons are still very loud compared to them dampening the others.

SF2000 has native composite out. Almost everything else is HDMI. The wireless controllers are great near-perfect SNES clones (SF900, not the weird ones with handles). It boots fast, has a great romset out of the box, doesn’t require tons if menus thay are impossible to read on a CRT, etc etc. It’s the only one out there like this other than it’s more or less brother/sister handhelds like the GB300. I have a Retroid 5 too, but getting that or a PC to output to a CRT at the right aspect ratio with synced controllers is so much more work and hassle.

I think it’s just not out yet. I panic bought an extra SF2000 bc lots of Ali sellers seemed sold out and I thought it was going out of production, but instead it seems they were just between runs and the new firmware is coming out. I hope I can upgrade to the new firmware without losing saves, etc.
>>
So I know this is a handheld focused general but i'm wanting to pick up an emulation console for my father, he's interested in emulation PSP & Dreamcast backwards but mainly just want to hook it up to his tv and play it through there rather than a handheld experience. I know some of the various handhelds are able to hooked up to a tv but i'd imagine he'd prefer something more console-like so I just thought I'd come here and ask for some suggestions for that, cheaper the better but my max is probably around £100.

I was thinking about getting the retroid pocket mini. Do anons have any experience with these? How well do they work for psp or vita games if it can handle them? Would look at the online reviews, but it always seems every handheld device is better than sliced bread.
>>
>>11509960
>>11509812
The bezel isn't botched. The screen is much larger on a body which is the same size, and the bezel is much thinner. The screen literally extends beyond the original bezel so there was no way to to put the original bezel on it.

Just get a used Dell USFF computer from eBay. PSP and Dreamcast should run just fine on an 8th gen or newer i5 with integrated graphics. PPSSPP and Redream. Then just get a wireless controller of your choice.
>>
>>11509840
Is this really that powerful? What is the “common name” for this HDMI stick?
>>
>>11509852
Depends on how you define “feel”. Feels similar to an original SNES controller quality and tactility wise. Very solid chassis, actually. People gripe about the low power chipset, but being low power means if you upgrade the 18650 battery (vape cell) you can get like 10 hours on a charge.
>>
>>11509864
Samsung phone+clip on controller would be closest to that.

But yes, the implied copyright infringement is a turn off to Japan and 1st world Korea.
>>
>>11509913
Nope. This is newer than 1.71. Now will have native Atari 2600+7800, Game Gear, Master System (officially), NGP, TG16, and a couple others. Most interested about “smoother SFC”, if all non super fx run at full speed with no frameskip it will be just about perfect.
>>
>>11509918
Amen. Raw power is the only SF2000 drawback. Even the screen is underrated being that it’s true 240p instead of scaler slop.
>>
>>11509961

Crazy how you can make a random claim with no evidence, and people will not only believe it, but ruin the thread perpetuating said baseless lie. Calling someone a chink shill over minor spelling mistakes is nothing new, but I’ve even seen a poster get called a chink because he called a Happy Meal toy a Happy Meal “Prize” instead, and apparently only chinks do that, even though they’re basically the same goddamn word. Zero proof for that claim btw, and why the fuck would chinks use an English word instead of a Chinese one?

It's the best up-to-PS1 handheld on the market. It does everything right: horizontal form factor, 4:3 ratio, d-pad placement, buttons all feel good, big screen, flared triggers, dual sticks, flat and pocketable, comfy ergonomics, good selection of aftermarket OS options, full shader support. Only weakness is the cardinal snapping on the analog sticks, but MuOS and Knulli have already solved that.
>>

everything that other guy said, plus i own one and from a more abstract non-technical perspective it just feels absolutely great to play on and muOS in particular has a ton of themes that really help beautify it and if you don't like muOS then there are even more options. it really can't be beaten as far as upper-tier Linux handhelds go. anything better is gonna be in the shitdroid category in which case you'd be better off saving more for an AMDheld. but for 60 bucks you cant beat it.

I'm new to the space (don't own any handhelds not made by Nintendo) and the Retroid Pocket 5 seemed like a perfect fit until I saw that the ergos were shit and the stick placement was not how I wanted it to be. >>
>>11510710
It's at least less pointless than the XX-SP, which has the same limitations except that it's modeled after a version of the GBA that was universally acknowledged to have inferior ergonomics but was widely loved because of the lit screen and rechargeable battery... which literally every handheld has now, which means it has no advantages left. Anbernic and Miyoo should have known how dumb of an idea this was just by looking back at the pre-retro-handheld age, where the big thing everyone was doing was the AGB-101 mod, because we all wanted that backlit screen without having to put up with playing on an SP.

It's a shame they couldn't get a N64 emulator to tap into the MIPS instruction set used for running PSP games while in Vita mode.
The N64 emulator for PSP running in adrenaline runs better than the retroarch core on the Vita.
If they could figure out how to use the psp instruction set while also having access to the vitas main processor, I bet someone could get N64 running well on the vita

I also wonder why no one figured out a twilight menu style system to boot psp and ps1 games from the Vita menu so you didn't have to boot into adrenaline to play them.
Those changes would make the Vita a very good emulation device for 5th gen and back
>>
>>11512021
daedalus64 has been out since 2020, and while it's still kinda bad, it's better than the psp version.
>>
>>11512021
also you can use the adrenaline bubble manager to make native vita bubbles for psp/ps1 games, although that isn't as nice as just having a launcher.

Oh I guess I wad the dumbass. To my defense windows "fixing" partitions is a common thing too. That said I wouldn't really trust these sd cards to really be of any decent quality either.

Why isn't it better tho? The PSP MIPS stuff should be able to handle the graphics while the newer Vita chip can handle audio and other stuff like that

I got the odin 2 on sale for $270 with free case and screen protector, at that price it's a good deal. The screen is 1080p (steamdeck is 1280 x 800)
The cheapest steamdeck is $400

I also wanted a lighter handheld, the odin 2 is 420g vs the steam decks 669g

I have a 4090 desktop, plus a 3060 server I leave on 24/7. I'd rather have Android standby and efficiency with Moonlight for streaming anything x86 or heavyweight.

Also, the Deck and most other handhelds are massive, hot, and have worse battery life. I used to buy GPD since the original pocket and Win 2, but moved to Android after I started streaming.

Don't just close the lid when playing in Gameyob. If you must, make a save state and turn off the device before closing it. As for GBA Runner, it's admittedly far from perfect. Most games are fine, but quite a few have audio and/or graphics glitches.

>>
>>11512569
So, the d-pad sucks even for a My Arcade device.
None of the 11 games, including Tetris itself, fit the screen and have missing lines to scrunch everything to fit.
To make it worse, it's a version of Tetris where the blocks INSTANTLY lock into place upon touching anything, you can't rotate or move to wedge them into place like in proper Tetris games at all.
The screen not matching the resolution does make the Tetris blocks have a funky, neat unintended wobbly effect as they fall tho.

odin 2 or RP5. anything less than a snapdragon 865 will only partially support 6th gen consoles and with the larger form factor of those devices there's practically zero advantage to owning one over a higher end android or a cheapo Linuxheld. so go with one of those two or go bigger with a rog ally or a deck or some other non-ARM device.

Blog post time:

Currently own: Odin 2 and Retroid Pocket 2S

Odin 2 has a touchscreen issue where it goes nuts randomly. Paid AYN 75 bucks to send me another panel, which should get here in a million years, so I'm gonna swap it out and see what happens.

Touch screen issue isn't a problem when emulating, but it's annoying for a multi-hundred dollar device.

Considering getting a Steam Deck OLED to replace the Odin 2, and then a Retroid Pocket Mini to replace the 2S. Would sell the Odin 2 and give the RP2S to a friend. Seems like a decent upgrade all around.

Love the RP2S, but I really want that "Pocket Gamecube/PS2" and the RPMini seems to fit the bill. Though I've seen people complain about the button noise and screen size. Though the RP2S's 3.5" is honestly fine for me as a pocketable device.

Also not a huge fan of the Odin 2 ergonomics. It's not BAD but it's not as good as holding an actual controller, so I think if I'm gonna be playing a ton of longer games then the Steam Deck might be more ergonomic. Also really want to play Caves of Qud while traveling.

I loved my 2S. I was very happy to have chosen it for my first handheld. I just got my RP5 and have had it for about three days.
The mini doesn't look worth it. The 2S's screen was totally fine, but I would not want to play sixth gen on it. You also have the power to play some stuff that's not retro, but you really can't because of that aspect ratio.
Those buttons look very uncomfortable. The RP5 has a plastic pad around the buttons like the Vita did, and I feel like it wouldn't be pleasant to feel glass under my fingers instead of that. Plus, it's going to smudge even more without it. The start, select, home, and function buttons are raised on the RP5. That doesn't seem to be the case with the Mini, and those buttons were the one thing I just did not like about the 2S where they were the same.

Get the black RP5 and the aspect ratio, the only real arguable plus for the Mini besides size, won't even matter. The unused screen space really does just disappear unless you're playing in direct sunlight. It's pretty cool.

Unless Mini is substantially more powerful, I'd sooner recommend RP4P for GC and PS2. Black bars on either side are easy to get used to and you have the option to use widescreen patches, plus some Wii and Switch games work on it too. It's the size of your cell phone so it's plenty pocketable with the shoulder buttons pointed behind you. That said, Mini is probably better if you really just want that 4:3 screen and not a wide screen.

If you're interested in DC, GC, PS2, PSP, or more then look somewhere else. Saturn and the more intensive N64 games are too much for it and whatever emulator it's using for NDS is annoying to work with but the games do work as far as I've seen, which is very anecdotal. It peaks at about PS1 and some N64 for the most part, even if it can play some DC or whatever you're looking at about 5 to 10 minutes before it starts heating up and you have to let it sit for a while or just not play those. Dicking around with the SP right now: GoldenEye has audio stutters, Banjo seems to work fine (not touching 2), Kirby has mild stutters but is playable, Mario Tennis won't start, Ocarina seems to work fine.

On modern Android (11+) with a wired controller, and with runahead enabled, it's expected to not have any latency. Without runahead, there is some latency, but you have to be really autistic to be able to notice it. (I can, but only if I concentrate very hard on this one thing, not really during normal gameplay.)
>>11513958
No that's me
>>
>>11514000
I notice it but mostly only in 2D games, a lot of 3D games have enough slower animations that it isn't as noticeable.
>>
>>11514002
I'm sure there are some innate differences here. I don't notice PWM on OLED screens even at their lowest brightness, but a lot of people complain about it.

I just make lists of games I want to play for each system and download the ROMs one by one, this way I save space and only have games that I enjoy on my chinkheld. That said, i fucked up my RG406V's order and they threw in a 128GB card with a crapton of games on it, the card quality is probably terrible, some dumps are weird (Contra III being way more generous with high score lives, Contra NES starting you with the M or S when you die). However it made me discover or rediscover a ton of cool shmups (Armed Police Batrider, Battle Bakraid, Battle Garegga, Soukyugurentai, Dimahoo, the Raiden Series, Dodonpachi, Dangun Feveron/Fever SOS, Metal Black, Ikaruga, etc.)

Everything except the Game Boy Light. I kind of want one, but they are cost prohibitive for what would just be a shelf warming handheld. BTW: GBC with OLED screen mod > Chromatic > Analogue Pocket, in my opinion. The Chromatic has a screen that is more authentic to the original, but the motion clarity of the OLED screen mod is like night and day. The Analogue Pocket is the worst of the three, having worse motion clarity than the OLED or Chromatic, while not offering the more authentic screen of the Chromatic. Though the Pocket does have other advantages in versatility and functionality.

>My problem with all those IPS or OLED screen mods is that GBC and GBA games have completely wrong colours on them. At least emulator offer a colour correction option.
I think that's a fool's errand. To begin with, the original GBC screen was reflective, so colors are going to look differently in different lighting conditions. Second to that, there are numerous official ways to play GBC and GBA games. The GBA isn't going to look the same as the GBC, and it's not going to look the same as the SP AGS-001, which won't look the same as the AGS-101, which won't look the same as the Micro.

He actually debloated it hard and put a lot of work into making it completely operable with buttons, but even with a high quality card it'll drag like a cheap Android TV stick on 1GB would. When he puts all this into work into real Android chinkhelds, however, it'll be a game changer.

As a GBA giga autist, this thing is incredible, plain and simple. It passed all of my autistic scrutinization tests very easilly. Low input lag, great screen, looks and feels like the real deal which means original GBA ergonomics, while having a rechargeable battery, and much louder speakers and bigger screen. People have been talking shit about the D-pad, but it's about as "bad" as the original, which means great for GBA games. This is the real deal.

It sucks for anything else, but I mostly play GBA and GB/C so this is fucking perfection for me.
>>
>>11515323
Except they aren't? The only problem I ever had was the sound didn't work and all I had to do to fix that was turn the tv and controller off then on again. It's also more honest than transhelds because we all know you only play them in the living room or man cave at home so why not just have it on the telly?

Pokémon Breeder Mini. It's basically a virtual pet sim where you raise one of the three Hoenn starters. You should find it if you google the english translation.
Then you just need a Pokémon Mini emulator on your device of choice

That's because it's a 10x perfect integer upscale which is different from blowing it up to a screen 10x its size, not that you're smart enough to understand that since you'd rather sit there on your high horse and make disingenuous arguments about shit you know nothing about.

How should this file be named? The game's title is "Star Ocean: First Departure" When I first downloaded it, it was full of underscores and I wanted to clean it up but now the game isn't recognized as being "Star Ocean: First Departure" How do you handle rom names that have unique characters like a colon?
>>
>>11515537
Bro it don't fucking matter both the mini and GBA are 3:2 aspect ratio
>>
>>11515552
Isn't recognized by what? If you mean preview images then either skip it or name the image manually and make it the same as the game file.
>>
>>11515508
Refresh your Gamelist and it will have automatically associated the images to it. There's no manual tinkering required from your end unless you want to put in your own images or manually edit titles/descriptions.

>>11515582
If you changed the name after the fact then go into Images/Video and change the name of the file, then go into gameslist.xml and Ctrl+F the original file name to swap the file name. Otherwise just scrape it again. The thing doesn't magically know you changed a filename on it, it's still pointing the original filename images to the original rom.

MY FUCKING FLIP 5 Z EFFECTIVELY DIED TODAY
I don't know what fucking happened. IT WAS FINE. Then this afternoon I opened it to check Pokemon Go and there was a MASSIVE fucking black bleeding pixels smear right through the middle with the bottom half of the screen flickering yellow, touch controls unresponsive. I hard reset the device to see if I could at least get the touch screen to work and the pixels bled fucking throughout the top and bottom half. I'm losing my fucking shit because it's a $2400 phone with a two year plan at $120 a month and a $400 downpayment, and it lasted sixteen fucking months before instantly turning to shit.

It's past the one year warranty, costs $800 after taxes to replace the screen locally and due to the nature of the screen would likely need a need screen annually at that $800 cost not including prices going up as screens become harder to keep in stock.

tl;dr despite the novelty, NEVER FUCKING BUY A FUCKING FOLD SCREEN DEVICE
