Doom 2's maps are more consistent than Doom 1.
Doom 1's first episode is good but it drops the ball hard after that. Doom 2 is mostly consistently average to good maps wish some stinkers.

It's much worse, something paranormal was fucking the world so hard the only solution they found was to drop the population numbers to lessen it's effect. All the mutants and monsters you fight are not made out of nuclear fallout radiation, some of them were showing up back when world was normal.
Ashes comes with small manual that drops some more hints on that, it looks like something akin to The Mist or Half Life 1 Resonance Cascade happened

Reposting for extra relevancy. This here is "so you want to play some" album reupload by UK anon. Reason is that imgur is blocked across his country and he'd very much like it for the alternative to be present. Alas...
https://archive.org/details/001-hx-8-vp-w-6

We had OP revamp some few years ago, which was supposed to bring some brevity and lower the letter-count, yet since then a couple of new domains has appeared with a extra few links there and here... and it's up to the 2000 post limit once again. So there's no way except for deciding collectively: if a little something needs to be gutted, some improvisation is due, or whether it's actually worth all the hassle. Personally I'm against of supplanting the old imgur link, as UK anon has stated in solidarity:

>>12184610
>Non-UK posters can still access imgur so the original link should still be posted.

>>12190663

Yeup, I still stand by that.
Full disclosure, however...I'm not in the UK. I just saw how it was banned, how it looked on certain sites like picrel, and went "well that fucking sucks ass for them". So if anyone tries the infograph and is like "I can't see shit", we got you.

Demonfear was a huge inspiration towards Scythe. Early levels are a bit rough, but it gets better as it goes along. Requiem's m20, m25, and m26 were also originally designed for Demonfear before being donated over, so they're worth a look as well.

E3's problem is that it doesnt really do anything new or interesting besides the BFG.
E2 was still fresh and exciting because of its bigger monster roster, darker and more atmospheric levels compared to E1's more action packed levels, and mostly original ost with only one repeat.
Besides M6 for being sorta a precursor to D2's city level design and M9 doing a fake out with the M1 encore (and its not particularly well executed), E3 just feels more of the same in comparison.

>dont murder me if this isnt retro but is there a BLOOD remaster coming out on december 4th?
That's the plan. There's currently "Fresh Supply" which is serviceable enough but still has a few things that need patching that will likely remain forever unpatched, so it's best to wait for the new thing.
It also sets a strange precedent: Making a "remaster" of a game that they already "remastered" in 2019. I wonder if a Doom 3 makeover is now on the table.
>>
>>12191596
It's still Fresh supply, they're just selling a re-released version of it with a few edits and a new name.

>SUB MORTEM
A little while ago I was complaining about how the Gremlin enemies don't have a gib animation, so I made one. Sprites and dehacked/decohack are included in this wad. You should load it after every other pwad or it might not work right. If the SubMortem project lead want's to include this, he should feel free. This is a strictly visual modification, so demos ~should~ remain synced. Also, the layout of the decohack is kinda awkward in order to handle the cumulative behavior of loading multiple dehacked patches, the new animation is defined at the very end of the file.

>After singing my praises of this mod when I first discovered it, I found myself receiving responses that pointed towards supposed identity-politics elements within the mod and on its mod page. Sure enough, there they were, a line proudly proclaiming Kiwi’s pronouns and mocking anyone who has an issue with it. The line was hidden in a character profile on a separate web page, and the link to the aforementioned character profile was hidden by a spoiler tag. I don’t particularly care about the pronouns, but boasting on a hidden page is somewhat funny. On the other hand, I appreciate the restraint, in that even if cybermonday couldn’t help themselves but include a statement of identity somewhere, at least they had the restraint to not shove it in the audience’s face. Perhaps they knew it wouldn’t be received well outside of doomworld. Speaking of which, yes — Diamond Dragon was released through doomworld and only doomworld, to my knowledge at least. And well, doomworld is… (chuckle here) It’s doomworld. If you know, you know. My main gripe with TFE is that early on it has way too many "tricks and traps" in its level design. You don't get the large scale encounters until a bit later (even Dunes is pretty short despite being the first "big" fight in the game). Meanwhile TSE gets pretty large pretty quickly and doesn't putter around that much in the beginning.
They're still very fun in their own rights, and both games have their fair amount of bullshit traps consistently throughout their campaigns. TFE is just a little slower about ramping things up, which is why I'm a bit more fond of TSE.
Right now I'm trying a zero secrets serious run of TFE because I want to see just how hard the game is without the extra help from secret weapons. It's been going pretty well but I know I'll hit a wall at some point.

Nah the voice acting was actually human beings - if you watched the menu credits scroll it goes through listing actors - just the quality is iffy since it's all free and this is a first for Vostyok voice acting wise and you are gonna get suboptimal recordings/actors. Some have really good voice actors - others could use some work or a rerecording of their lines with a better mic/setup.

Obituary did a cooler flamethrower for Doom back in the 1990s. There were also some .wads which did mini Cybers too, and often this simply did not look very great because they'd use a half sized and crushed down sprite, but if we're gonna be fair, the green and dehorned Cybercuck in Legacy Of Rust looks unbelievably fucking ugly, and it's still the same size as a normal one anyway.

Is it the newest Copper? It took away the one thing I enjoyed (less crazy voreballs), and while I’m fairly tolerant towards its other changes I did not like the “always resurrecting” zombies.
Does the newest branch still make enemies as consistently “hitstunable” as they were in the previous version?

Not sure, haven't actually played something that uses Copper in a long time.
Actually, I haven't even experienced the nightmare changes that people were talking about a while back, but I'd probably make those optional and off by default.

Quake 2's kind of an odd man out. The gameplay isn't as cool or crunchy as Quake 1, and the multiplayer pales in comparison to 3.

I wonder if one of the devs used to come here years back, because I remember whenever I complained that the Nailguns were pointlessly nerfed and I disliked that, someone would always get really indignant and upset and tell me I was wrong. Also there couldn't possibly be more than one person thinking that, until they couldn't deny that, lol.

>>12193028
It tends to be pretty liked by some. I always liked it, and I always disagreed with some people who would aggressively insist that Q2 was nothing but a bad game. You don't actually tend to see as much of that posting anymore.
Allegedly, some of it was promoted by some sort of Q1 mapping cabal which resented Q2, but I don't know if that's really true. Maybe? There's lots of weird freaks loose on the web, but one of the guys repeatedly going on about that was pretty weird himself, and seemed to mirror some of the resentment onto Q1 instead, which isn't exactly better.

I think part of breaking some of that anti-Q2 attitude, is that the remaster of Q2 came out and it was largely well received. Not universally loved, but it reminded some of what they liked about Q2 regardless, and for some it made changes which they felt Q2 needed.
I haven't actually played the Q2 Remaster yet, but one of the things it tries doing is to improve on the enemy AI, as notoriously, Tim Willits insisted on having LOTS of enemy behavior removed and dummied out during the original game's development (there's all kinds of unused animations for most enemies in the original release).

I think Q2 is a fairly solid SP experience over all. Maybe in need of some improvements here and there, so I'm still interested in trying the revamped version.
Q2's MP has honestly been pretty forgotten and underappreciated in later years, in spite of being really solid, and for laying a LOT of the foundation of what would make Q3, a game everyone loved so much for its MP

Lunaran's website lists all the changes Copper does.
>To help distinguish the two nailguns from each other, so that the Perforator is less of a straight upgrade, the velocity of nails from the Nailgun has been doubled, while the Perforator has been given a little spread (comparable to the Shotgun). This makes the Nailgun better at long-range needling (to reduce the necessity of efficient-but-boring shotgun sniping), while the Perforator is just as good as always at close DPS but potentially wasteful at range. Their damage outputs are unchanged.
>The Perforator now fires two regular nails at once, rather than one nail that is "better", to better leverage the aforementioned shoot-through. When the player uses the Perforator with a Quad, the two spikes' damages are always combined against one target, to ensure there is no reduction in ludicrous gibs compared to vanilla Quake.
>>
>>12193123
Might as well have just copied the SMG/minigun dichotomy of Quake 2 of making the SNG have to spool up or down and have bad accuracy, but giving it a much higher firerate than the regular nailgun. The way he has it now seems like weird halfway point.
There's also just the obvious thing of rotary guns not firing from multiple barrels at once.

I ain't got no dog in this fight. I see a super nailgun in any Quake mod, I never use the regular nailgun again. Simple as.
>>
>>12193129
For the sake of argument, maybe the SNG would fire a duplex cartridge, then there could be two projectiles coming out the same barrel basically at the same time.
>>
>>12193123
That's what I remember about the mod: Regular nailgun projectile increase (buff), super nailgun accuracy decrease (nerf).
So, if whenever >>12193098 was complaining that both nailguns (plural) were both nerfed, and someone would tell him 'that's wrong'...I mean, sure: Only one was nerfed. Were you just complaining about the super nailgun nerf? Because I messed up earlier too >>12193120 and that's why I'm confused.
I can see the intent - and I usually save the super nailgun for "oh god" quick close quarters combat anyways - but I also think leaving the super nailgun as is and just buffing the regular would have been enough. Nails can be pretty precious, and even when I was going through AD/Alkaline recently I would occasionally use the regular nailgun over the super if the enemy wasn't staying still at a long distance.
>>12193129
Iirc, Tomb of Thunder is Copper derivative and does something like that for it's supernailgun replacement: It has a wind-down effect once you're done firing. However, it's also hitscan so it's a flatout HUGE upgrade and I never went back to using the regular nailgun.

That was it. Long time now desu. Anyway, improving the regular NG is like, fine, I guess, but I strongly disapprove of nerfing the most fun and satisfying weapon for no reason (to me, anyway).

>anti-Q2 attitude
The rhetoric/community memory seems to have shifted in the last couple years, but my experience aligns with the previous rhetoric that q1 was beloved and q2 was considered a neat but forgettable game quickly overshadowed by others. I disagree that there was widespread "anti-Q2" or disdain for it, just that it wasn't that great.
Just a few years later in the early 00's (02, 03...) multiplayer and mapping/modding was still all about qw/qwtf and q3a, q2 was dead IIRC.

I've been tinkering with Operation Deadbolt to make it compatible with WADs that have their own extensive Dehacked patches.

I take no credit for the latter, an acquaintance pitched the idea and adjusted everything in my code. I tested Eviternity 2, Ad Mortem and Monster Sounds EX' MBF21 version to be sure and yeah, it's all working perfectly. Nothing is overwriting anything.
This is kind of a breakthrough and I'm honestly kinda giddy about it.

Probably because Doomguy is barely a defined character at all (and on purpose), and also because this was an era where being an idpol obsessed socialist freak (or any other kind of politically obsessed freak, for that matter) didn't have much normalization in general society or entertainment, so people who operated that way either kept it on the down low, or they got pushed out onto the fringes because the only other people who could actually tolerate that at all are other such freaks (and even then, often they didn't anyway, even within what was ostensibly the same ranges of beliefs).

Even when the iD guys were making Wolfenstein 3D, any real politics to be gleaned from it are at best extremely surface level, and had primarily to do with them being fans of the original Castle Wolfenstein, which exists simply because Silas Warner thought a WW2 spy scenario would be a good setting for an adventure.
>>
>>12194578
yeah all the Wolfensteins prior to the Machine Games reboot were basically apolitical, even if you were a an actual neonazi the nazis in those games were so far removed and mythologized it would have been ridiculous to get offended

to some extent this can also apply to the first nu-wolf game
beyond that point, eugh
>>
>>12193479
Because it's a matter of SUDDENLY, HELL, therefore we literally have no time to spend on ANY sociopolitics because if we don't fight, there won't even be any peoples or societies left later to discuss hypothetical sociopolitics in.

This is one of the reasons Doomguy being mostly ambiguous and vaguely defined is good.
The other is that it's literally perfectly fine to not address society or politics at all in your entertainment works.

>>12193486
He's right in the pragmatic sense, because again, analyzing the premise of Doom establishes that humanity as a whole is in really deep shit, and that killing the demons and surviving and stopping the invasion takes precedence over literally any and all differences and questions in society before that.

Compare to a famine. Maybe you don't like basedbean flour, you think it's nasty as hell, but you also have barely gotten any calories and nutrients in 8 weeks, so that shit is just gonna have to do.
>>
>>12194578
WW2 being a setting and theme for the character motivations was the political ceiling for all WW2 media back then; no one really thought about about how they could make this politically relevant, neither the developers nor the players that discussed it. It was something normal, red-blooded men liked for the action and gritty tales of survival, and it was something old people could get into since it was a real, non-fictional scenario at its core. In the same way boomers gravitated toward flying simulators and racing games because they were based on tangible, real-world skills, war games followed the same beats. Specific to Wolf 3D, it was also something gamers in general appreciated due to the technology and how fast the game was, as well as the modding legacy it brought over from Castle Wolfenstein in the 80s.

WW2 media was as apolitical as anything else, which I imagine a lot of newgen can't believe to be the case. It wasn't even a thought in people's mind during discussions.
>>
>>12194586
The Nazis in older Wolfenstein games can at best be described as being hyperfocused on all kinds of absurd mumbojumbo which Heinrich Himmler thought could help Germany's war efforts. Himmler was an extremely ridiculous person and had strong hopes in really fringe science and occultism, which is the kind of spaced out stuff that many years after the fact makes for fun and imaginative pulp adventures, like Indiana Jones or Wolfenstein.
>>
>>12194615
Can just be boiled down to easy, free binary morality setting that you didn't have to write or put effort into for people to understand (even if it usually was America saves the world from the goodness of it's heart, lol).

Probably the first BD derivative that feels completely different from BD in terms of gamefeel. Also the first that can reach speeds more cracked out than Diamond Dragon. I can't really properly convey it through an image or even video. Also great new weapon sounds.

Some alt huds use it for weapon display, also handy for if you're using stuff like the Gearbox mod so it doesn't default to the first viewsprite for some weapons.
>>
>>12195150
>What's the trick to that?
They can't attack and move at the same time. Close in, punch them while baiting their bite, then move away. Do this as far forward as you can, bait as many pinkies as possible before moving away so they spend time biting the air instead of moving and pushing you back. It's all about managing the space you have, multiple pinkies will push you back but you're gonna be thinning their numbers as they do and hopefully kill them all before you run out of space or at least kill enough so you can move to the other side of the horde and start again.
The hard part with this map is the pain elementals, not the pinkies. Once you past the meatballs you're golden. Pain assholes can't vomit lost shits if you hug them and the beserk punch deals more damage than the shotgun, use that to your advantage to save ammo.

>>
>>12195232

>Wang
He has the smoke bomb that increases punch damage for some reason (maybe he can be more accurate with his punches when the enemy can't see him?), but it isn't the same as steroids from space. Also you can't use smoke bombs during a arm wrestling match.
>Duke
His steroids quadruple his damage (and make him faster). Berserk pack increases damage tenfold.
Maybe he can beat Wang with them, but space steroids is still superior.
>Caleb
Best he's got is the boots and they don't increase damage. Unlike the top three, he's one of the protags that has an actual melee weapon. Duke, Wang and Doomguy all can fight with their fists (or legs).
>Ranger
He has the Quad damage, which is still only 4 times the damage. It also affects all weapons so it must be some magic voodoo or something, not a physical performance boost. Possibly not effective on an arm wrestling match. He's also can't punch demons to death.
>Sam
I don't think he has anything like that. Plus way too many games and it's all a mess.
>Freeman
He's a scientist.
He works out at the library, not at the gym.

Doomguy and Wang are strong because of actual hard work and training. This is also why I put Wang above them both at base, he spends his all his free time training and flirting with anime girls (which will make you stronger) even if he's less buff than either of them.

Reminder that this is the same reason 94 Protons is being delayed. Chopblock is still supposed to be working on the guns.

The development of SubMortem should not be beholden to a separate project that hasn't seen progress in years. I don't care about Ghoul shotgunners if it takes this long to release. Remember that the first phase of AM began August 2021? In general, projects should have the assets done BEFORE mapping begins.

Let's not blame every single fuckup on Chopblock ffs, the assets for the true bfg replacement are all there in the decorate weapon pack - it's just that nobody ported them to mbf21/dsdhacked, how the fuck is that his fault?
>projects should have the assets done BEFORE mapping begins
Most of them were, the first asset pack was mostly done with a ready pallete swap, textures, ps1doom sounds with regular doom weapon sprites and all the enemies(except gremlins of course but that was phase 2 which was not intended in the first place). It was other anons that wanted to expand it with more stuff

All Ad Mortem weapons were done a long ago, including melee sword and bfg staff. Dehacked conversion should've been approved by Vaeros, but for some reason it never happened.

everything after Junction gets messy.
>Outskirts
okay map, weird spooky section in sewer that doesn't work. Felt like someone out of the team really liked spooky sections in Afterglow but couldn't capture what made them great. Wendigos suck and just a recolour of basic cannibal with more HP, same with empties from school map but those can crawl and have radioactive version. After spooky section you just fight mutants in silence, also the music track was reused and it's a very short one.
>Cordon
I like it but it's flawed. The boss is terrible, soldiers are dumb, try triggering the shootout and they won't react to half of the enemy squad.
>Subway map
Starts off great, turns to shit once you reach the final station. Shitty FNAF reference, Gladiators are another cannibal recolour. Arena was lacking and section of the city leading up to the mall looks weird as fuck if you run around looking at it more.
>Mall
Is great but worm reveal was underwhelming. It's another cannibal reskin! They should've possessed corpses of other enemies
>City
not as memorable as one from 2063 or as bit and atmospheric as The Gap in Afterglow. Felt like dev ran out of city ideas.
>Hard Reset
I fuckin hate this map, I was waiting for something cool for years when this was in the works and we got fuckin nothing. The boss fight is great though.

There's much more issues going on around this expansion. It was rushed and released raw. I was disappointed when it came out

It was a cool expansion with cool ideas but they had no idea how to end it. Why bother with the black water? It did fuck all to help in the end, I really hope this isn't a sign for how part three will end up because so far Ashes has been superior to most modern releases outside of that final map.
>>
>>12196054
Hard Reset has the ingredients for something amazing and thats why I'm so disappointed. It's narrative prequel but it does nothing with it. It has brand new arsenal I like a lot but there's nothing interesting in the enemy roster to counter it. So much stuff it brings up is either underwhelming wet fart or just forgotten. The Walker, his wife, Black Water and the gang related to it, that witch girl with big boobs, the army and the spire. Wtf was the problem of mutant boss?
The maps are similar thing, the places you explore are interesting but level design didn't impress me like other games in series did.
It could've been my favourite but It's unfinished mess

I made a post a thread or so ago about how I can't figure out why the most recent verison of DS errors out for me with almost any one of the DS addons. I'm using DoomRunner 1.9.1 with GZDoom 4.14.2, I have Deathstrider (11/19/2025) itself loaded first, then the addons for DS after and nothing else, loaded with Doom 2. The pic is what it spits out. I know other anons haven't been having issues so it must be something I'm doing, but what? Is UZDoom 4.15 mandatory for it now? Or maybe a setting in GZDoom itself I accidentally ticked? Sorry if it's something obvious and I'm dumb. I still only get the Kodiak, Spike Driver, weapon-select, and wraithhands to work with it. I also seperately tried it with non-DS addons like flashlight++, liveReverb, project_malice, and just Deathstrider which it still works fine with. Just won't accept most of the DS addons for me.
