Here's how i did it on legendary with no one escaping

The first part is a little cheesy but it helps

Saw this on the AOE2 discussion

It would be exciting to see a sequel to the Alexander the Great campaign, following a “what if” alternate history approach similar to the Aztec campaign. In this version, Alexander would not stop at India. Instead, the campaign would explore a fictional scenario where he continues his conquests across much of the known world.

Each scenario would increase in difficulty as Alexander advances: from deeper into India, through China, Korea, and Japan, across the steppe, into Eastern Europe, then Western and Northern Europe, and finally Africa.

By the time the player reaches the African campaign, the difficulty could be tuned for elite players. This final chapter would present an intense challenge, meant to push even top-tier players like TheViper to their limits on Legendary difficulty.

This campaign structure could also serve as a way to introduce new Chronicle civilizations. Each regional DLC could focus on the cultures and factions Alexander encounters in that area, allowing new civs to be added organically. For example, East Asian civilizations could be introduced in the China and Korea arc, steppe and Slavic civs in the Eastern European phase, and powerful African empires in the final chapter.

To tie everything together, the campaign could be structured as a multi-part progression system. At the end of each DLC, players would save their progress and carry it into the next expansion, creating a sense of long-term conquest. This would allow for a continuous campaign experience across multiple DLCs.

Each chapter would also offer different outcomes depending on the player’s success. If a player is defeated in a given region, that DLC would conclude with a “bad” ending, such as Alexander’s death in battle, rebellion among his troops, or collapse of the empire. On the other hand, victory would unlock the next stage of conquest, with Alexander living longer and pushing deeper into the world.

I beat the scenario in my own way, a little different from yours
>Send whole army to capture one base, be as efficient as possible, try to not lose many units, phalanguites focusing down elephants and infantry, companions actively meatshielding phalanguites, archers focusing down the Puru UU archer

They cannot escape, they are stuck, and they actually barely attack the fort, instead opting to uselessly trying to path tru the forest while getting pelted by arrows.
Simply focus fire the carts, get the free res and attend somewhere else while the fort finished the caravan 1 by 1

I ended liking this mission a little, there's a lot of strategizing, tho there's also a certain APM-check too, otherwise I would have spammed pauses as much as I did

Even in RM it would depend what you're up against, and it seems like it'd be a pretty decent transition in the mid-late game if your opponent was going unique units. Not as expensive to tech into as cavalier+paladin, don't need to build stables if you already have a castle or two for their own purpose, more pierce armor, slightly faster. Macedonians having shared armor techs would help that too. Probably wouldn't be amazing in multiplayer but it could be workable, and chronicles civs have a lower power level than regular ones in general imo.

Yeah it's basically testing the waters (no pun intended) for naval balance adjustments since it's never been a popular part of the game. It's really just massing Galleys or Fire Ships depending on how far into the game you're in and then some, and T90 has been complaining about the dock being an unintuitive mess sometime ago as well. Chronicles in itself has sort of been an experimental test bed for trying out ideas in that area, and if anything's coming out of it to the base game - it seems to just be melee ships and gold/wood trade.

In any case, hopefully it doesn't fuck over civs without Bracer as much.

Athenians when they had that +7% Economic Policy were insane, but even now they'd probably still be quite competent with fast Hoplites. Achaemenids are sluggish initially, but War Chariots are competent units while Reed Arrows is a pretty disgusting tech overall. Spartans would have a pretty mean MMA Flush and then probably fall off like a rock in Imperial. Thracians will come off as being a bit weak, but Puru I haven't really tried enough.

You learn hotkeys by using them. Don't listen to pros who've been playing for decades telling you to set up some complex bullshit, use the grid layout the game defaults to. Make a point of not clicking to build units/buildings, instead just look and press the appropriate button. Play a few singleplayer games (even campaigns) until you get this down. Non building/production hotkeys can come later; introduce them as you feel the need to that thing faster.
Fast micro just comes with playing more. There's some tricks, but by and large it's not complicated. Micro is just telling your units to do things. The more you play, the faster you get at telling your units to do things. It's really that simple outside of split micro / quick walling / TC garrison tricks. Those are more advanced though, even if a lot of the playerbase uses them nowadays; they aren't needed at first.

Both the things you're talking about aren't even AoE skills though, they're fundamental RTS skills. Learning a genre of game takes time, but managing your economy properly in a match is what's really hard to learn and apply in AoE.

The art of war campaign is explicitly that. If you can do okay at those, you can probably play ranked. There's some real retards out there to play with, even if you suck ass. Just don't let your ego get bruised in the initial Elo drop, same as any other Elo system.

Have you done the art of war tutorials? They are essentially a tutorial to prep you for multiplayer. The early economy scenario is the most important. You should be able to comfortably get a gold medal from it.

Start small and work up from there. The ones you absolutely need to know are:

>select next idle villager
The default hotkeys for selected units/buildings map the grid at the bottom left side of the screen to the keyboard. Press Q and it performs the action in the top left corner, A performs the action under that and so forth. With a villager selected, QQ builds a house and QA builds a farm. Experiment with this and you'll get familiar with it pretty quick.

The appropriate button based on the grid, I meant. You can pretty quickly use the grid mapping to your keyboard to guide you to learn hotkeys. Even if you don't memorize the specific hotkeys, you'll still be faster.

I should have added that your "go to town centrer" and "select idle villager" hotkeys are not optional, but I map those to mouse 4/5 and don't even think of them as hotkeys anymore.

That's a very bold statement when DE's Extreme AI is probably the most honest RTS AI I've dealt with from a non-modded standpoint (even if this release had the better of 20+ years game experience to go off of), while still having some measure of competence and punishing people who sit on their ass. Without having done any deep digging into it personally, I think maybe the closest thing to cheating it does is figuring out where you might be in something like a Nomad game, which even then isn't completely ridiculous for a very attentive player to do and it still does some scouting - whether to appear as being believable is one thing. There's no weird tech advantages with training units they shouldn't have, resource cheating, complete map visibility, or deliberately team on the player and ignoring each other in a fucking FFA. Things that plenty of RTS games may do.

Given the game's complexity I think it manages a lot of things well or at least tries to. Fucking hell, it even offer a myriad of orders if you are on the same team and does things like reporting locations of enemies to you. Not many RTS even offer that. It begins trade in team games maybe a bit prematurely but also appropriately in the Imperial Age, mass-killing villagers it doesn't need to make space for trade carts. Sometimes its scout will cheekily try to kill a vulnerable villager and you can't cheese it as easily with tower rushes anymore. It can't emulate a pro player or play migration maps well (especially on Regicide) but the devs have covered most cases fine.

It's not without caveat, what with throwing units into castles and it can be picked clean right from the Feudal Age. Sometimes the unit composition it picks for their chosen civ is generally and consistently shitty, even if they do try to counter your units. If you are letting them get free reign over training Post-Imp deathballs, then you are probably biting off more than you can chew insofar.

In Dark Age take boars especially early because you want to get Double Bit Axe as soon as possible. And then Horse Collar after you've clicked up if you're gonna make farms. You usually go up a vil or two later compared to typical civs, but have much better eco.

In a Fast Castle boom build you do like 27-28 vils in Dark Age. Get Double Bit again as fast as possible, Horse Collar and first gold mining tech on the way up, then Bow Saw and Heavy plow after you've clicked up to Castle. You can arrive in Castle, plop down two TCs, and have basically full Castle Age eco upgrades already done. Insane boom from there on out.

If you're doing knights in Castle Age, Cavalier is the absolute number one priority upgrade since it's both your Bloodlines equivalent and gives +2 attack (and costs as much as Bloodlines basically). Once you get to Imp, click Paladin before anything else because it takes a million years to research.

In Feudal you can play basically anything. Flemish Militia is a pretty sick basically better Man at Arms so that's a fun option. Lategame gunpowder is godly. Coustilliers don't hold up against equivalent knight line units head to head, but you have FU halbs you can mix in too, and they absolutely delete archers and can even reasonably take fights against spears since they nuke half of them at the start of the battle and clean up the rest reasonably well.

Anyways, won this mission, the final push was scary at first but I won relatively comfortably
Mostly due all green units technically having feudal units and feudal upgrades

In the end, it is an amazing campaign, amazing voice acting, amazing map design, decent cinematic artstyle, I rate 10/10

Legendary is actually very hard and you have to get your strategy down to actually win those. Worst part is just your ai allies are sometimes useless retards (mostly just Parmenion). Other times your allies will actually make like easier, but it's a mixed bag between missions. As a general rule of thumb if your ally is Perccidas you got an ally that can actually help you and if it's Parmenion you have one that can kill 50% of the raids.

And if you have a decent bonus for them like Burgs or Hindus they're a beastly general-purpose ranged damage unit too. Ornlu's playthrough of the Alexander campaign is just awful and people who comment on his videos are retarded because they all jumped blind on Legendary.
I feel like this DLC is gonna end up getting mixed reviews because people just want to boom and steamroll the AI and so far this campaign did nothing but prevent players from doing that since mission 1.
I almost had a stroke when I saw the Thracian mission and the reactions to it.

Sure, but you can't complain that Legendary doesn't allow you to get away with booming with a minimal investment in defense.
It's quite clear that most missions are more similar to puzzle missions with a gimmick or two, so when you start playing the mission like a MP match and get pressured hard then complain that it doesn't feel like AoE 2 while also complaining that regular build & destroy is boring AI steamroll I seriously have to question wtf you want from a campaign.
I still expect Ornlu to give it a high ranking after replaying it on hard or whatever instead of pushing through 4 missions in one sitting on legendary like a retard, but lower than BfG because he doesn't understand how to play Macedonians or Thracians.

I had castles on every cave entrance, 2 or 3 castles with around 20 companions camping the cave and a few outposts.
They all got destroyed by the doomstack of rams and trebs. I spammed companions from 15 castles and phalanguites from 20 barracks. In the end I ran out of resources but still had a huge army.

they dont cheat in the same way most RTS game did(i.e artificially buff the unit stats/resource gather rate), you can beat them if you trained consistently enough. The closest thing that come to a "cheat" these AI use is the fact that they can constantly micro their eco and army simultaneously much better than most player could do. But then again they can only see what they see, and they cant split their armies to attack in multiple places, say they got an entire army in your base, and you managed to slip yours into their base to raid, they will stop razing your base and pull back all of their unit to defend rather than keeping up with the tempo to raze your base to nothing(which what most pro players would do in this case).

and the AI military unit got close to zero sense of preservation, you can plop three castles side by side(even as Persians which got medieval CWIS turrets) and they will still send their entire army at it, Extreme noticeably got some reservations, but then again most of the time they still fall into the same trap as the lower difficulty AIs do. Whereas players will actively avoid fighting underneath a castle, especially early on

Melee is direct damage onto target. Projectiles are entities but they generally can't be blocked, only dodged. There's some exceptions, mostly treb/cannon rounds in weird conditions. Also scorpion bolts damaging everything they pass through.

Am I missing something? Alexander giving them an attack speed buff and the endless amount of unique units you go up against (hoplites and it seems most non-buildable campaign units) really seems to make up the difference in stats.
The charge tech also feels like it's doing a decent amount, which is strange because it's the same as the Samurai's useless charge from what I can tell. Maybe it's the speed bonus helping your cav surround enemies and get early kills at the start of the fight to snowball, in a way that doesn't really occur with infantry.
Do you just stop running into unique units later in the campaign or something?

I legit had no issue with most scenarios on hard (Tyre was a pain but I suck on water maps anyway) because I kept building forts in chokepoints or walls to funnel through AI troops, never bothered with more than 2 TCs, kept sending cav on raids to take out weak military production buildings while massing up phalangites and siege then pushed.

It was more like he was getting himself into situations he could have never possibly won, and also abandoning them as soon as it starts to go bad. Both the Romans and Carthaginians were superpowers at the time with greater power than any of the Hellenistic kingdoms. He traded blows more or less with Rome, which was unsustainable because the Roman Republic in land alone was like 4x larger than Epirus and they had far higher rates of mobilisation, the same with Carthage. His most realistic goals were for Macedon and Greece.

I'd be highly surprised if the AI wasn't cheating with scouting, but that is a literal necessity. Any AI does terribly with hidden information in a strategy game. This is not really a fixable issue on a technological level for any complex strategy game.
When people say it doesn't cheat, they're talking about resources and production, which is the primary annoying way that AI cheats in most games.

Hoplite and Phalangite. I would prefer to have access to both from the barracks.

Hoplite being heavier pole infantry but shorter reach 0.5 and expensive, Phalangite being lighter infantry with long reach 2 but minimum range requirement and cheaper.

Then you could use your Champions, and Pikemen and Eagles.

the towers are an excellent building, significantly boost your military capabilities especially with the healing aura
you can get hoplites if you don't kill them at Granicus
you can get slingers when you get to Tyre
you already have access to archers, skirmishers and cavalry archers plus you can potentially acquire peltasts, mounted skirmishers, cretan archers and pattiyodha longbowmen

Your enemy can't spam docks has to make tactical choices to make shipyard or port.
