Maya game's over.
For some reason when I reformed into feudalism I lost literally 90% of my levies and I don't have enough money or manpower for a full standing army yet.

Would have been fine if I wasn't jumped with court and country and 90% of my provinces flipping to the nobles despite them being crippled as an estate
Fuck you, paradox.

The game is a startlingly good base. The only things I think are pretty bad right now are the proximity calculations, which directly play into control. No AI nation will basically ever form a large nation because right now it is effectively literally impossible, proximity can't be re-transmitted over coastal tiles and proximity is pretty drastically bad at game start.

If Paradox makes it so proximity can be sent over sea tiles properly and not just a gradual tick-up then I think it will solve a huge amount of the problems. But right now the game is basically vassal simulator.

The basics of trade are very easy to do actually. You should leave it automated so the AI can fill the gaps, but all you need to know for the basics is flip through the tabs and decide whether you want max profit or import shit your people need. Click on a trade you want to do and it appears at the top in current trades. Make sure they’re locked with the left button on the trade. Let it go and come back later. If it ends, AI will fill it with something so you don’t miss out on using your trade capacity. If it becomes an unprofitable trade, end it and pick a different one.

I just hope that Paradox addresses this by adding a proper balance of power mechanic so that France's neighbors align together, rather than just artificially nerfing France (which is what they did in EU4), as that would also translate into a nice challenge for players once you consolidate and start outscaling the AI. Antagonism is a poor check on expansion and easy to game, especially since countries no longer have that absurd base 10k manpower floor which made fighting a coalition of HRE minors a death sentence.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I understand it, the estates get an uneven slice of all the money for selling the things they've produced to the market, then get taxed, THEN have to buy all this shit back for their pop needs. At this point I have no idea how they would ever end up in the green.

In my experience, those gold trades end up being very unstable and never actually go through. Not 100% sure how it works but I think it's just local countries in those markets with much higher trade advantage who want the gold for minting. Probably the UI should be updated to account for this, as it happens with other resources too (but not as often).

They were enemies with virtually every other European power and still managed to consolidate French land (contested by England and the Hapsburgs), build a pretty sizable colonial empire, and on occasion project a good amount of power into Italy and Germany. I do agree that the lack of centralization should be a problem relative to other powers at game start (which it actually is, as France actually has some fairly significant debuffs relating to noble power etc.), but the number one priority of every Western European state from 1453-1814 was to contain France—and France still managed to expand.

Some things are necessary to automate or you’re just doing it wrong and being inefficient. Like your taxes on estates. Click the automate next to the sliders and it will always taxes the most it can without upsetting them. Otherwise you are being inefficient. Just go unautomate a slider when a special need arises to tax more or less. Trade should also be automated so that if a trade ends and you’re not paying attention to that screen, the AI will replace it with something so you’re not wasting your trade capacity.

hope would say that it doesn't matter, and that i will inherit the union either way, yet prior conditioning with ""paradox develop ment studio"" tells me i should be concerned

look at what resources you have
see their prices in the market
low supply high demand? good money
high supply low demand? bad money
upgrade the RGO on the resources that gives good money
build markets to improve market capacity and
sell that shit to market

alternatively

check other market
wool in england is a good example
its abundant and thus super cheap
but mainland europe buy that wool at premium
max produce wool as england and sell to mainland europe for big money
use cheap wool in your own country to pump out textiles, paper and other resources that can then be used yourself to over abundance and then sold on market for big moneys

but i just automate because im probably wrong and a retard

Yes, I do think the requirements to form the Netherlands are way too low, though I did form it while still having Gelre under my direct control.

And, through vassalage and fiefdom, I control Friesland, Neder- and Oversticht, and Gelre. Then there are the lands I directly occupy, which 'de facto' consist of Zeeland, Brabant, Loon, Limburg, and opper Gelre, but de jure also include the titles of Holland and Hainaut

But I do think they should restrict the formable to controlling at least half or even 2/3rds of the region. 48 and 62 locations respectively, instead of the current 28. Even if you take Netherlands to be 'formed' with the Plakaat of Verlatinghe (it wasn't), the signees included, among a couple others, Brabant, Flanders, Holland, Utrecht, Gelre, and Friesland. In EU5 terms that would be, in total, 63 locations.

There is no way Lambert isn't just ragebaiting. Each post is written in such a satirical way with pure ignorance on display.
Capitalizing SS in Russia. The idea that putting 'the' in front of a country name is fascist. Pretending that we've always called Kiev, 'Kyiv'.

antagonism seems A LOT less difficult to manage than aggressive expansion from EU4. as florence I've taken luca, pisa, siena, urbino, and I'm about to dec war and take genoa yet it's only 1379 and I've had zero coalitions form. since burghers and clergy are so influential I choose one's law and push the agenda from the other and I sit at like 90% support making it trivial to get the free parliament CB and pass one more agenda to pass the law as well.

Yeah it’s a lot more difficult if you are talking about late eu4 Austria. Basically Austria in eu5 is like equivalent to brandenburg. Starts pretty weak and your bordered by the monster Bohemia, but you can within a century, become the HRE emperor and an economic powerhouse, but you have to work towards it and you get no free PU’s.

Maybe brandenburh is considered easy but I literally lost a brandenburg campaign like 59 years into it a week ago, so I’d put eu5 Austria on that level.

My tip would be to get TIROL asap for the mines, and improve with all electors to become HRE then focus on economy 80% of the time and expand 20% of the time and make everything you conquer not near your capital a vassal.

I do want to stress again how cool it is that the game forces you to play tall yet you become crazy more powerful as years go on even without expanding. eu4 100 years in id own half of germany to be at this level, but im just chilling at near 1444 austria borders and becoming a world power through the economy. my fear is that BlobCucks will cry on the forums and this will be reversed.... i love that i actually care about my country by only being able to manage the capital and palces nearby rather then the eu4 boardgame mindset of CONQUER AND CORE EVERYYYYYYYYYYYYYTHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING. its just so cool becoming strong af through economic means without le mana dev game bullshit

>>
>>2216646
In some ways there was historically a period of time where the leader of Japan floated the idea of invading the Spanish Philippines. I'm not sure it would be completely impossible if the Japanese really tried. But also, it makes absolutely no sense when it happens if you let AI outside Europe colonize. When the entire country is fragmented and in disorder, it makes no sense for Ashikaga to focus resources on taking over the Philippines. There should also be more that happens when you try to colonize a place that has a really established people. Both pops in the locations and nearby Filipino nations should be hostile to the Japanese encroachment and launch invasions of the colonies (or have Japanese pops die and migrate away in noncolonized locations).

Yeah, it's better than No-CB even if you let the issue expire and take a 7 stab hit. Released that as a vassal immediately, and somehow that seemed to end the situation and reward me with 25 stab and a whole bunch of other stuff. Glad to be off Mr. Hus' wild ride, but I might be on another wild ride in 100 years when the reformation comes and I flip protestant to join the league wars and reclaim my position as Emperor (which I lost because my heir was female).

In reality, republics were probably more common, some other Aztec/Nahua towns and cities like Yautepec and Cuexcomate show access to nominally elite goods by commoners, though Tlaxcala also has an unusually egalitarian layout

Monte Alban also went through some egalitarian phases in it's history (though I don't think researchers think that means it was ruled via a republic/senate then), and some researchers think Teotihuacan was a democracy

Anyways, other then the character model, the flags, the religion logo, and the throne room graphics, are there any other mesoamerican/region specific art assets? No, theres different union types and you need a specific one to actually annex. If you ever played stellaris, its kinda of like a federation where you pass laws and you need to pass a bunch to actually get the ability to annex so worst case is you just vote against the reforms so they never get to the vote on allowing annexations.

5 years after inviting King Karoly III of Hungary to take the throne of Naples the King has moved his court to Napule and Naples is officially the Senior Partner of the Personal Union.
Feels good to be the King.
I think I'll try building some Regular soldiers next and prepare to annex parts of Sicily (which is rightful Neapolitan clay)

Cortes getting allies against the Mexica has little to do with the Mexica being especially disliked, and is more just how the opportunistic nature of Mesoamerican politics worked, if anything the Mexica were MORE hands off then other big Mesoamerican political powers and that further enabled opportunistic side switching as a method of political advancement

Plus, not "basically all of their neighbors" sided with Cortes, the Aztec Empire had ~500 subject and vassal states, with there being another few hundred in the region not in the empire at all. Only like a half to a few dozen states allied with Cortes

Standing armies are expensive. You are basically paying several thousand able-bodied men to do no productive work whatsoever, and unlike levies you have to pay for their equipment and transportation and housing as well.

>>2217041
Yeah, they would be under the direct authority of the crown and probably used to guard crown property when there's no war to fight. Levies, by comparison, would be loyal to the lord or city that raised them before the crown.
Standing armies also don't have to work the fields during peace time, which means they can spend their time drilling. On top of that they're getting their equipment provided by the crown, so they're probably better equipped than levies who in many cases would be using hastily-converted farm equipment. And to top it all off, as professional soldiers, they've signed up to fight. Levies just want to go home. This is one of several reasons that modern countries are transitioning away from conscription; morale is higher when everyone on the front line chose to be there.
>>
So levies are a must until like mid game? I removed a noble levy privilege and my levies halved for little benefit and I can only recruit 600 troops before army prof and I doubt army prof is going to help much
>>
Why is building a city so fucking expensive
I should have started as Mogadishu
>>
>>2217065
Just until you embrace the "Professional Armies" institution and the research to build a building that spits out manpower. There's an early-game equivalent building you can only build on the capital, but its manpower replenishment rate is a measly +5.

How would you feel about a few nations being given extra smart AI capable of planning and such? It would be like lucky nations being given to some important tags. As for why it'd only be a select few, it is so it isn't massively bogging down performance. Maybe there could even be a dynamic system where a country that manages to get strong enough will gain the improved intelligence too.

Back to the game, Regulars are expensive because Levies have -10% discipline and Regulars have normal frontage/width. Regulars mop up Levies in every conceivable way. You pay a premium to have them but they are so strong it doesnt matter. Regulars absolutely crush in early game, given you use them in any war, at all.

I don't think they're too strong.

I've built up a lot of Marketplaces, they're definitely a strong building. If you have a lot of land then you don't need Trade Offices other than in markets where you want more control or you want to do business there, in which case they're critical. My economy is mostly internal, though, I've extensively built up my industry. RGOs tend to be the best bang for the buck but filling satisfaction does a lot of great things and you need buildings to convert the materials you're not trading into better trade goods. Other than getting self-sufficiency with what trade goods you can, just slamming buildings into your capital and population centers is the way to go.

I've just never really got the snowball going. Think I over invested in roads when I should have been developing the capital and the area immediately surrounding it.

Roads are great but it's easy to get caught up in spamming them. They have to be roads to and from population centers to other ones, places where you already have a good amount of control and productive provinces. They make a big difference there. Building them to the farther stuff on the other hand is really expensive and has weak gains until you have infrastructure in the entire area. In all things, it's balance. It sounds like you're making too much of one particular thing without waiting a bit to see how the market reacts to the increased supply. Overcorrecting on a demand will ultimately make you less money, unless the demand is something important for more than just cash like food. You'll get a better feel for how to modify to the demand as you play more, it's a lot of interlinking systems.

So you have a deficit of say 10 fine cloth and are producing/importing (doesn't matter) 5 a month. Do buildings get that 5 first? or do the estates?

An order of priority beyond trade advantage for who gets goods in a deficit really needs to be explicitly stated.

What happens if I annex a vassal with vassals, do those vassals become my vassals?
>>
>>2217290
Not really, rural settlements grow faster in population and also let you do twice as many RGO levels. 5% control is not as good as 2x as much RGO, especially if it's a really valuable RGO like Silver. Urbanization starts becoming more attractive once you can make use of those +25 building slots with a high development because that can make up for halved RGO or you're nearing the population capacity which takes a very long time.

If you read the books about the early portuguese explorations you will see that it happened more or less that way. They would take a ship, go several hundred miles south, see a challenging cape to sail across and say "fuck that" and tail back to Lisbon. Then they would come back with a strategy to cross it, estabilish factories and keep going.
They crossed the Bojador (a very dangerous cape) in 1438, reached Arguim in 1443, Sierra Leone in 1460, Nigeria in 1472, the Kongo in 1482 and finally the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. It was smooth sailing to India after they managed to get past the Cape, though.

they can do this if they are the "cultural hegemon" and "naval hegemon" respectively. hegemon system is currently highly broken and unbalanced, not the last of which reason being that it only counts great powers, so if you have a bigger navy or economy than a great power, they still get to be the hegemon and get huge benefits because they crossed some arbitrary power threshhold

>Bernard Lewis stated that while most Islamic theologians in the classical period (750–1258 CE) understood jihad to be a military endeavor,[49]:72 after Islamic conquest stagnated and the caliphate divided into smaller stated, "irresistible and permanent jihad came to an end". As jihad became unfeasible it was "postponed from historic to messianic time."[106] Even when the Ottoman Empire carried on a new holy war of expansion in the seventeenth century, "the war was not universally pursued". They made no attempt to recover Spain or Sicily.[107]

Basically Muslim conquests more or less stopped being a thing in the late medieval era until the Ottomans and even then they didn't really justify their expansion religiously, they claimed to be the successor to Rome instead. The Ottomans never proclaimed a jihad until WW1 in an attempt to stop the Arabs from revolting.

Anyone have any tips for how to break into GP status? Pic is my current status. I'm a little slow on conquering Italy but I'm bogged down in coalitions. It's 1527 and I'm current on tech/institutions. Pisa is my vassal, and so are a few smaller states in Greece.

In my Maya game the British colony in East America started as "Pamlico" and eventually turned into America. Perhaps for flags and proper names the colonies need to grow into a specific size and then form one of the pre-existing colony tags?

nta but it only became the United Kingdom by uniting with Ireland.
It was the Kingdom of Great Britain. Then in 1800 it became 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland'. So Ireland is kinda needed for that.

>right now i'm just playing it safe with 2 loans but it's really bothering me that i'm losing out on opportunity cost because i'm not borrowing as much as i could be
Also worth noting that:
1. Your credit limit is dynamic, and will continue to grow even while you're in debt. You don't ever have to repay your loans as long as your estates are rich enough
2. You lose crown power based on the number of active loans you have. IMO it's worth generally staying at or close to 0 loans unless you're making an extremely profitable investment - particularly at the start of the game where the number of estate privilages makes getting over 25% crown power difficult
>>
>>2218098
>>2218099

For me, it's having dozens and dozens of my dynasty characters coming to age and marrying into literally every monarchy. At this point I think it's only a handful where I don't have someone ready to be brought to the throne in a generation or two. Bohemia with PUs with all European majors before 1400 is getting ridiculous lel

Also the culture assimilation council order is hilariously broken. I think the more different cultures in an area, the more it works, so if there's 4+ different cultures in an area that are outside the one you have (me being Czech for example, target area has 5 non-czech) then you get an easy 2% a month at least of culture conversion, which increases your cultural strength, which just makes the whole process easier down the line. If you have a shit ton of tiny minority pops in your capital it just converts basically all of them in less than a year. Prague is the capitol of earth

It's not actually that bad because Russia is covered in rivers which are better than roads, though they only work downstream and most of the developed areas at the start are upstream of Moscow so it might be better to move your capital to somewhere like Tver.

Help me understand because maybe I'm retarded. Why is there 3 sources for jewelry but then it shows 2? And there's 5 demand but there's only 2 with a green tick there too.
Am I misunderstanding or is there no real good way to see how much of a good you are getting in your economy total vs how much you are losing (from use in buildings, exports etc.) just a raw number of total goods.

And I was somehow lacking 20 wool a few months ago so I expanded an RGO and started importing 1 trade capacity of wool and somehow that fulfilled the lack of wool? There's no way that added up to 20 extra wool a month

>>
>>2218267
I'm not saying that Europe wasn't more advanced, but the reality is that early modern armies up until the invention of the machine gun were not actually that much more effective than medieval armies. Not to say they weren't better (obviously) but it wasn't usually enough to make up for the disadvantages of waging war halfway across the world. Plus a lot of African (and Asian) states had plenty of access to guns anyways and in many cases had modern military tactics too. What they didn't have was galleons and frigates, Europeans for the most part won the early colonial wars by barraging coastal cities into submission, not by fighting actual battles.

Again, I'm not saying that early modern armies weren't better than medieval armies, obviously. But it wasn't as massive of a gap as people think, not enough to compensate for the difficulties of intercontinental war. Having warships was the difference maker.

If Ashanti had been teleported into Germany, would they have been conquered by Europeans? Almost certainly. But their army was still more than capable of holding their own against small expeditionary forces. The idea of a few European regiments beating out entire armies 10x their size was not reality until the very end of the EU timeframe. Only in America and Southern Africa (i.e. the actual stone-age armies) was that true.

>the end of the EU time frame
The 18th and 19th century where they did exactly that, and so should be represented in game
Even more so when as a player you can have potentially massive armies, like those that were in Europe rampaging around the rest of the world, where they should be entirely indisputable
And the gap was huge anon, not just because of equipment but because of logistics and institutions allowing for the massing of much larger populations of men in good order about the place. It wasn't just machine guns or breech loaders or hell even the enemies limited access to firearms, it was the invitational knowledge to raise, drill and use those innovations with the men they had, something nobody has ever caught up to the west with besides a couple individual nations for flash in the pan moments (after putting their whole focus into westernising their nations). I do agree that naval supremacy was also massive but that's a different kettle of fish (even if it draws its water from the same well)
Regardless of all this, even in that original post anon shouldn't be scraping a win with a 2:1 manpower advantage in the 15th century, he should have absolutely rolled that battle

I made the same mistake. You are probably accidentally converting them TO christianity.

When you do the cabinet action, you pick the religion you want to convert to, not the one your converting.

if you want to larp as a hick you have do downgrade all cities in your country back to villages at the start
but you wont, because you are a hypocrite
>>
>>2218503
I've turned debug on to investigate

They have:
>18.5k levies raised (their max)
>2.3k regulars
>1.2k merc
Plus 17k manpower

So it seems levies are counted twice if they are raised.
>>
>>2218532
I always educate them and it definitely makes a difference, but I wish you could just set a default setting since I always do the same thing. Heir or prodigy = expensive, everyone else = based on personality.
I'd rather it just be a law you set that adds modifiers automatically, I have an xbox hueg dynasty so I have to click the alert really often.
>>
>>2218533
I don't need to LARP in game because I already don't live in a city irl ;) nice try though
>>
>>2218468
you can see the institution spawn conditions, there's a historical province which always get a chance but then other factors like making certain amounts of goods with certain society levels etc gets you a chance too. i got it in my game in amsterdam because i had a shitload of paper and book manufacturing
>>
>>2218621
Printing Press spawned in Syria in my game and fucked over Europe for a while, it was annoying because Mamluks was a total shithole with no control over the region it appeared in
The worst part is you need the Printing Press to build PAVED ROADS

My burghers all the way in norf fc are like
>fookin luv me roads made 'a sand
for 100 years before someone prints the first issue of The Daily Mail featuring an article about "walkin on rocks innit"
>>
>>2218779
Do you know what the spawn conditions for it are? I might try to meme it in my persia run
>>
>>2218869
Apparently it's this
>University
>Produces at least 5 Paper
>Over 1000 Burghers population
>Country's societal values are at least 20 towards Innovative
>Renaissance institution present
which is pretty easy to get as any country with a city, just need to grab Renaissance and research universities. The hard part will be the RNG that might spawn it somewhere else.
>>
>>2218886
Yeah that's 100% worth going for, cool

>Even more so when as a player you can have potentially massive armies, like those that were in Europe rampaging around the rest of the world, where they should be entirely indisputable
This is true but I think this is kind of like saying as the player I can be making half a million ducats monthly so I should be able to buy out entire countries. In reality this would've been impossible so it doesn't make sense to depict in game even if making an absurd amount of money is something you can do. Similarly shipping tens of thousands of soldiers around the world also would've been impossible so I think it makes sense for the game to portray it as an unviable strategy even if you can actually pull it off in game.
>Regardless of all this, even in that original post anon shouldn't be scraping a win with a 2:1 manpower advantage in the 15th century, he should have absolutely rolled that battle
lol, west african militaries were hardly even behind europe in the 15th century
>>
>>2218779
>>2218779
It's a game rule. You can make institutions spawn in their historical locations or anywhere that meets the requirements.
>>
>>2219587
>lol, west african militaries were hardly even behind europe in the 15th century
NTA and I agree but, in game, what makes west africans different than any other people that *should* be behind Europe? AFAIK they all have access to the same techs, barring a handful of cultural and regional advances.
>>
>>2219608
The fact that they don't get institutions until much later than Europe and all tech progress is locked behind having institutions. But that isn't a very relevant factor in the first hundred years or so.
>>
What's the benefit of infantry from later periods beyond unit size?

Men at arms and halberd guys seem to have pretty similiar stats?

(or my brain is too smooth to understanding anything other than Strength).

If that with thing meant that more men in a unit is the best, does that mean that 1000 man peasant levy bands are king?
>>
>>2218426

>>
>>2220735
professional armies shred levies so there's definitely something going on besides the stats
