On the retro question, on top of release year and platform, I think the production budget is a factor as well. With the advance of technology, the production costs keep shooting upwards and gave rise to the AAA industry with studios of hundreds of specialists working on single games whereas in the 80s and 90s games tended to be made by smaller teams often with one person doing multiple roles overlapping between design, programming and art despite not being officially trained for some of the disciplines. It's easy to say vague negative things about these "Hollywoody" AAA games how they're cinematic, railroaded, dumbed down, appealing to lowest common denominator, cliche, unoriginal and safe, etcetera but it's harder to quantify what's wrong with them exactly and why the current gens and some gens teetering on the "retro" cutoff point are guilty of this and why the sentiment is so strong to dislike them.Modern indies are by no possible definition retro but their production has more in common with studios of the past whereas AAA studios have more in common with Hollywood production.Games that are outside the profit-driven safe investment AAA industry, these "small studio high quality passion project" games no matter the release year are an unclassified category of games that I feel like myself and many retro/indie/horror chuubas too seem to just chime with. Retro game studios can't be classified as indie (since they might've been contracted or in-house) and indies can't be classified as retro (due release year) despite the unnamed overlap.

There exist libraries upon libraries on how to do PSX style rendering out of the can and say what you will but I think it's a better stylistic choice than sharp blender crud that will look like gm_flatgrass.
